MLB Game Summary - Seattle at Miami
(Sunday, April 20th)
Final Score: Miami 3, Seattle 2
Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and sweep the Seattle Mariners with a 3-2 win on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series.
Garrett Jones, Adeiny Hechavarria and Donovan Solano picked up an RBI apiece for the Marlins, who have won four of five.
Marlins starter Kevin Slowey gave up two runs on three hits through five innings of work, picking up three strikeouts. Mike Dunn (1-2) earned the win setting down the three batters he faced in the eighth.
Despite allowing a leadoff double and a walk, Steve Cishek worked out of a one-out jam with runners on the corners to pick up his third save of the season and 32nd consecutive save dating back to last season.
Corey Hart hit two doubles and Dustin Ackley and Justin Smoak each drove in a run for Seattle, which has dropped six straight and eight of nine.
"The only way we're going to come out of this, is our guys have to step up and perform a little better. It was a great game but we had opportunities to get some things done and we didn't do it," said Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon.
Seattle starter Brandon Maurer hurled four hitless innings before surrendering a run on two hits in the fifth. Maurer fanned four, while walking two through 4 1/3 frames.
Tom Wilhelmsen (0-1) pitched one inning and allowed one run, while walking two and picking up his second blown save.
Miami trailed, 2-1, heading into the eighth. Christian Yelich doubled to left to lead off the inning before Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked, then Casey McGehee walked to load the bases.
Jones then grounded to first and Smoak threw home to force out Yelich, however, after a challenge on the play he was ruled safe. Hechavarria then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Stanton for the game-deciding run.
"I felt that I beat it from the get go and I saw him call me out. I started yelling at him a little bit, telling him that I was safe. If we didn't have replay right there then it's a 2-1 game and we have two outs right there," said Yelich.
Earlier, Hart doubled to left center to lead off the second before moving to third on an Ackley groundout. Smoak followed up with a sacrifice fly that plated Hart and gave Seattle a 1-0 lead.
The Mariners struck again in the fourth when Ackley picked up an RBI. Robinson Cano hit a leadoff double to left field and advanced to third on a Hart flyout to right. Cano then scored on Ackley's sacrifice fly.
Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, the Marlins broke through for a run. Jones hit a one-out single, which Hechavarria followed with a walk before Solano singled in Jones.
Yelich extended his career-high hitting streak to 14 games ... The Mariners host the Houston Astros on Monday to open a three-games series ...
