Gallardo's value soaring
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - On Wednesday, Yovani Gallardo of Milwaukee, lowered his ERA to 2.86 and his WHIP to a microscopic 0.87 as he handcuffed the Pittsburgh Pirates yielding just two hits over eight shutout innings.

The righthander upped his won/loss total to 3-1 and with 34 strikeouts in 34.2 innings is fast becoming a fantasy star. We won't even talk about the fact that he won Wednesday's game with a home run, his second of the season, for the only run of the game.

Gallardo was a solid 9-5 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP in 2007, but missed most of 2008 with a torn ACL after a freak collision with Reed Johnson at first base on May 1st. He didn't return until September 24th, but the team had enough confidence in him that he started the first game of the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The scouting report on Gallardo shows a fastball in the mid-90s, a hard slider, a mid-70s curveball and a changeup. He has a "very live arm and the ball explodes out of his hand."

Gallardo was not a high selection on Draft Day, rather his Average Draft Position was 110 and he wasn't likely one of the top-20 starting pitchers picked. But he's second in WHIP behind only Dan Haren and eighth in strikeouts and he is pitching like a top starter now.

Although he is not likely available for pickup, he might still be obtained in a trade, particularly if his owner has not been paying attention to his last few starts.
