Tavares done for season with a knee injury

Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Islanders center John Tavares will miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury.

The Islanders said Thursday the Canadian Olympian was diagnosed with a torn medial collateral ligament and a meniscus tear.

Tavares was hurt during the quarterfinals of the Sochi Olympics when he took a hard hit from Latvian defenseman Arturs Kulda in the second period of Canada's 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

After Canadian head coach Mike Babcock said Wednesday that Tavares would be sidelined the remainder of the tournament, the Islanders confirmed the severity of the injury on Thursday.

The team did not provide further details, but Newsday reported earlier Thursday that Tavares may need surgery to repair the knee. The team, the paper said, expects the captain to be ready for training camp in September.

Tavares is third in the NHL in scoring with 66 points in 59 games. He had not scored in four games for Team Canada.
