Johnson wins 2009 NFL Fantasy Player of the Year

Chris Johnson put up one of the best fantasy seasons of all-time.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Tennessee running back Chris Johnson earned the 2009 TSN NFL Fantasy Player of the Year award, edging out Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers for the title.

Over the past few weeks we determined our fantasy Players of the Year at each position. Today's award went to the best of the best, as Johnson beat out Rodgers, the top quarterback, Andre Johnson, the top receiver and Vernon Davis the league's top tight end.

Johnson put up one of the best fantasy seasons of all-time. He rushed for 2,006 yards from scrimmage, added 503 yards receiving and scored 16 touchdowns to total an amazing 429 fantasy points. That was 117 more than the runner up Maurice Jones-Drew, 103 more than the leading quarterback Aaron Rodgers and 94 than last year's leading scorer Drew Brees. He posted 11 consecutive 100+ rushing yard days including every week in the fantasy playoffs.

Since his ADP (Average Draft Position) was 10.7, more than likely nine or 10 fantasy owners in your league passed at selecting him on Draft Day and nearly every one of them should now questioning their talent evaluation skills. They won't make that mistake next year, he'll likely be either first or second player off the board in 2010.

Rodgers was usually the fifth quarterback off the board (ADP 52.1), but out- performed all of those picked in front of him. The Green Bay quarterback matched the "big guys" pass-for-pass and then won the points title by rushing for 316 yards and a league-leading five scores. He finished the season with 4,434 yards, 30 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions. His 326 points led second-place Peyton Manning by 20 points, although it should be noted that Manning didn't play much in the final two contests after clinching a bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

You paid a pretty steep price for Andre Johnson (ADP 15.4), but he was worth every penny leading all receivers with 275 fantasy points. After a couple of injury-prone years, Johnson has gone back-to-back seasons without missing a game and should no longer be considered an "injury-risk." With quarterback Matt Schaub coming into his own, Johnson should continue to be a top-five receiver for the next few seasons.

San Francisco 49ers' tight end Vernon Davis was the 20th tight end off the board (ADP 196.8), but finally lived up to his talent level with 13 touchdown receptions and a league-leading 212 fantasy points. It helped that he got some better quarterback play than in past seasons and a settling of that position will help keep him as a top-five performer next year.
