The other San Diego Gonzalez

Edgar Gonzalez has flown under the radar.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The normally short-handed second base position has come up big in 2008 with Chase Utley, Dan Uggla, Ian Kinsler, Brian Roberts, Brandon Phillips and Dustin Pedroia leading the way, but if you don't have one of these half-dozen stars there is a solution out there.

His name is Edgar Gonzalez and he plays second base in San Diego.

Gonzalez didn't make his first appearance in a Padre uniform until May 12th, but the older brother of San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez has performed well in "hitter-unfriendly" Petco Park.

In just 184 at-bats, Gonzalez is hitting .321 with 23 runs scored, five homers and 21 RBI. Over the last seven days he has been even more impressive batting .500 (11-22) with eight runs scored and two home runs.

If he had as many at bats as Pedroia, the American League All-Star second baseman, his numbers would extrapolate to nearly identical totals. And Gonzalez doesn't get to play half his games in Fenway.

Gonzalez has shown more power on the road (or is he hitting them the same distance and his hitter-unfriendly home park is taking effect), but he still has a batting average of .322 at Petco Park. He has been consistent all season hitting .304 in May, .330 in June and .311 in July.

If you are struggling at second base, or need a middle infielder, Gonzalez could be your answer.
