Aramis Ramirez has been hammering the ball over the past seven games.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
While searching for players who are in the midst of a hot streak and worthy of your second-half attention, I found that the same last name kept coming up - Ramirez.
Aramis Ramirez had been one of the most disappointing hitters in the first half and was still batting as low as .178 on July 5th. But the Chicago Cubs third baseman has been hammering the ball over the past seven games and has raised his average to .211. That's a 33-point rise in one week!
Ramirez went 13-for-29 with three homers and 13 RBIs. If you assume that he'll get to his career batting average of .282 by the time he has around 500 at- bats, he'll have to hit .348 the rest of the way. He is available in one out of every four leagues and should be picked up if he is available in your league.
The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Manny Ramirez, and he played left field Thursday night. The 10 games before his injury, Manny had batted .469 with an OPS of 1.189. Therefore, despite going 0-for-4 last night against a tough righthander in Chris Carpenter, I'd expect the Dodgers' cleanup hitter to quickly get back into the groove. Manny might be available in a trade for less than you think given his weak 2009 and injuries in 2010.
Alexei Ramirez, the Chicago White Sox shortstop, batted just .221 in April. He improved to .283 in May and .281 in June. But none of those months compare to what he did just before the All-Star break. He's batting .342 for the month of July, which is traditionally his best month. He has a career batting average of .324 in July and a career OPS of .839. He's only owned in about 65% of all leagues, so if you are searching for a replacement while Mets shortstop Jose Reyes struggles with his injury or until Troy Tulowitzki returns, Alexei Ramirez is your guy.
Hanley Ramirez has to make any list of star players with this surname. Even as good as Hanley has been so far, he's likely to be better in the second half as his career statistics show he his OPS rises 40 points after the break. You probably won't be able to trade for the No.2 overall choice, but if he's already on your team you should simply enjoy the ride.
