For The Last 365 Days

Kole Calhoun, RF4/16/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles right fielder Kole Calhoun has been diagnosed with a severe ankle sprain. He'll miss 4-to-6 weeks. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register
Insight: It's awful timing as Calhoun was just starting to find his groove offensively (seven for his last 15). Former Tiger Brennan Boesch will take Calhoun's place on the active roster.
Howie Kendrick, 2B4/16/2014 11:12:00 AM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick has gone 9-for-20 (.450) with two homers and seven RBI against Oakland's Tommy Milone.
Insight: Kendrick is hitting . 241 with zero home runs and 12 Ks in 58 at-bats this season but he may be able to get his bat going Wednesday against Milone.
Albert Pujols, 1B 4/16/2014 11:01:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is 7-for-14 with six doubles against Oakland's Tommy Milone.
Insight: Don't be fooled by Pujols' .237 average. The 34-year-old has hit four home runs in his last seven games and flew out to the deepest part of Angels Ballpark in dead center Tuesday night. He also has struck out just four times and physically looks much better than he did last year.
Mike Trout, CFHot4/16/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout has hit three home runs in the last five games.
Insight: Trout went 3-for-6 with a homer, three RBI, two runs and his first steal of the season Tuesday against Oakland. He's hitting .317 with five round-trippers, 10 RBI and 11 runs in 60 at-bats.
Raul Ibanez, DHCold4/16/2014 9:56:00 AM
Description: Angels DH Raul Ibanez went 0-for-6 Tuesday against Oakland.
Insight: He has three homers and 12 RBI this season but his average is down to .163 and he has struck out 17 times in 49 at-bats.
Kole Calhoun, RF4/16/2014 9:10:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun badly rolled his ankle during Tuesday's game and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, according to Alden Gonzalez of mlb.com.
Insight: Calhoun is hitting .250 with three homers, two steals and 12 runs in 14 games this season. Collin Cowgill is expected to fill in.
Albert Pujols, 1BHot4/13/2014 9:34:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols homered for the third time in his last five games Sunday against the Mets.
Insight: Pujols is hitting just .240 so far, but he extended his hitting streak to nine games Sunday and hasn't struck out in his last seven. Overall he looks much better and healthier than he did in 2013.
Mike Trout, CFHot4/13/2014 9:30:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday against the Mets.
Insight: Trout homered in two of the three games and went 7-for-15 in Los Angeles' series against New York to raise his average from .257 to .320. He still hasn't attempted a steal but has four homers and nine runs.
Josh Hamilton, LF4/9/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles left fielder Josh Hamilton will miss 6-8 weeks because of a complete UCL tear in his left thumb, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Hamilton will undergo surgery for the injury, which he suffered while sliding head-first into first base Tuesday night. The 32-year-old was off to a great start, batting .444 with two doubles, two homers and six RBI in 27 at-bats, after a down year in 2013.
Josh Hamilton, LF4/9/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles left fielder Josh Hamilton suffered a thumb injury late in Tuesday night's loss to Seattle and will now need an MRI. SOURCE: MLBlogs
Insight: His X-rays came back negative so there is reason to be cautiously optimistic. Either way, Hamilton (.444, 2 HR, 6 RBI) probably isn't going to play Wednesday in the series finale.
Albert Pujols, 1B4/9/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols drove in two runs Tuesday against the Mariners, giving him 1,501 RBI for his career.
Insight: Only 52 players in MLB history have reached that milestone. Among active players, he's second behind New York's Alex Rodriguez. Pujols (.219, 1 HR, 3 RBI) could realistically move into the top-40 before the end of this season.
C.J. Wilson, SP4/7/2014 10:08:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles left-hander C.J. Wilson dominated Houston Monday for his first win of the season.
Insight: Wilson (1-1, 4.61 ERA) got rocked in his first outing (8 H, 6 ER in 5 2/3 IP against the Mariners) but was much better this time around. In eight innings, he only allowed four hits and one run. The seven strikeouts Wilson recorded were his most since September 22nd.
David Freese, 3B4/7/2014 12:10:00 PM
Description: Angels third baseman David Freese is not in Monday's starting lineup against Houston.
Insight: Freese is off to an ugly start (.162, zero homers, two RBI) and will sit while Ian Stewart gets the start. Stewart has just one at-bat this season. A solid power guy in Colorado, he's yet to prove he can hit elsewhere.
Erick Aybar, SS4/6/2014 9:53:00 AM
Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar has batted .476 in his career against Houston starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: Aybar is 10-for-21 with two doubles and two triples off Feldman. He's hitting .222 in 2014.
Howie Kendrick, 2B4/6/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick started off 0-for-10 but has gone 4-for-10 with two doubles and two RBI the last two games. He also has a terrific matchup Sunday.
Insight: Kendrick has gone 8-for-18 (.444) against Astros starter Scott Feldman.
Tyler Skaggs, SP4/5/2014 10:43:00 PM
Description: Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs tossed eight innings and allowed four hits and one run (unearned) Saturday at Houston. He struck out five and walked one.
Insight: Skaggs, who was considered a top-10 overall prospect by mlb.com in 2012 when he was with the Diamondbacks, worked on his mechanics after posting a 5.43 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and an 89.4 mph four-seamer the last two years. He was clocked at 93-95 mph Saturday. Granted, it was against the Astros, but it was still an encouraging performance.
Josh Hamilton, OFHot4/5/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton hit his second homer of the season Saturday at Houston.
Insight: The 32-year-old put on 20+ pounds of muscle this offseason in response to a loss of power last season and he looks good so far. He's hitting .500 after going 3-for-5.
Kole Calhoun, RF4/5/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun is not in Saturday's starting lineup against the Astros, according to Alden Gonzalez of mlb.com. He's getting the day off.
Insight: The Angels leadoff hitter has started off 3-for-18 with one homer and three runs. He batted .282 with eight home runs in 58 games last season. Colin Cowgill is starting in his place.
Chris Iannetta, C4/1/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: Angels catcher Chris Iannetta is getting the night off Tuesday, according to Alden Gonzalez of mlb.com. Hank Conger will start behind the dish.
Insight: Ianetta had a career year in 2008 for the Rockies but has hit .227 with an average of 12 homers, 40 RBI, 36 runs and a .756 OPS over the last five seasons. This is his third year with the Angels.
Josh Hamilton, OF3/31/2014 2:49:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton could be in for a tough evening Monday against Felix Hernandez.
Insight: He's hitting .164 against the right-hander in 61 trips to the plate. The .250 clip Hamilton hit for in 2013 was the lowest of his seven-year career.
Albert Pujols, 1B3/31/2014 2:38:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols hasn't had much luck against M's ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: He's hitting only .192 in 26 at bats against the former Cy Young winner. Pujols (.258, 17 HR, 64 RBI in 2013) set career-lows in almost every statistic last season. Of course, much of that had to do with the torn plantar fascia he played through most of the year. We'll see if Pujols can stay healthy in 2014.
Raul Ibanez, DH3/31/2014 2:35:00 PM
Description: Angels DH Raul Ibanez could be in for a rude awakening Monday against his former team.
Insight: He's going up against Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez, who has limited Ibanez to two hits in 11 previous encounters. Ibanez's next home run will be the 301st of his major league career.
Mike Trout, CF3/28/2014 10:47:00 PM
Description: The Angels and Mike Trout have agreed to a six-year contract extension that will pay him $144.5 million and keep him with the club until 2020. SOURCE: Alden Gonzalez, mlb.com
Insight: The contract will kick in after 2014 and cover his three arbitration years and first three years of free agency. Trout will hit the market again at age 29. For a player who put up 10 WAR in two straight seasons, an average annual value of $24.1M is a bargain for the Angels.
Joe Blanton, SP3/26/2014 12:44:00 PM
Description: The Angels have released Joe Blanton, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Blanton went 2-14 with a 6.04 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP last year and had a 7.08 ERA this spring.
David Freese, 3B3/25/2014 7:55:00 PM
Description: Angels third baseman David Freese is expected to return to the lineup Thursday after sitting out Tuesday with tightness in his quad, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Freese batted just .262 with nine home runs, 60 RBI and a 721 OPS last year with the Cardinals, down from .293 with 20 homers, 79 RBI and an .839 OPS the year before. He's 11-for-44 (.250) with 11 singles this spring.
Josh Hamilton, RF3/16/2014 3:44:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles right fielder Josh Hamilton will indeed make his Cactus League debut Monday against the Giants. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: Hamilton (.250, 21 HR, 79 RBI last season) strained his calf about three weeks ago. Assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks, Hamilton should be a go for Opening Day against Seattle on March 31st.
Tyler Skaggs, SP3/14/2014 6:37:00 PM
Description: Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs was clocked at 92-94 mph Friday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Skaggs was considered a top-10 overall prospect by mlb.com in 2012 when he was with the Diamondbacks, but he has recorded a 5.43 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP over 68 innings in the majors while averaging 89.4 mph with his fastball. Los Angeles acquired him along with Hector Santiago for Mark Trumbo this winter.
Josh Hamilton, RF3/14/2014 5:50:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton (calf) felt good taking live BP Thursday and could make his Cactus League debut Monday, according to Alden Gonzalez of mlb.com.
Insight: Hamilton suffered a calf strain late February and the Angels have been bringing him along slowly. The 32-year-old put on 20+ pounds of muscle this offseason in an attempt to regain power after hitting just 21 homers in 151 games last season. He should be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback.
Josh Hamilton, RF3/13/2014 5:12:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton (calf) is scheduled to take live batting practice Thursday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Hamilton suffered a calf strain late February and is targeting early next week for his Cactus League debut. The 32-year-old put on 20+ pounds of muscle this offseason in an attempt to regain power after hitting just 21 homers in 151 games last season. He should be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback.
Mark Mulder, SP3/11/2014 9:00:00 PM
Description: The Angels parted ways with lefthander Mark Mulder on Tuesday.
Insight: Mulder (103-60, 4.18 ERA in nine seasons) was likely to miss the whole season anyway after rupturing his Achilles in spring training. The 36-year-old will have to put his comeback on hold for now.
Josh Hamilton, RF3/11/2014 7:43:00 PM
Description: The earliest Los Angeles right fielder Josh Hamilton (calf) will make his Cactus League debut is Sunday, according to the Orange County Register.
Insight: Hamilton has been running and hitting on the field after strain his calf in late February. The 32-year-old put on 20+ pounds of muscle this offseason in an attempt to regain power after hitting just 21 homers in 151 games last season. He should be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback of course.
Ernesto Frieri, RP3/11/2014 3:47:00 PM
Description: Angels manager Mike Scioscia doesn't want to use his closer, Ernesto Frieri, in four-out (or more) saves this season after he led the league with seven last summer. SOURCE: Orange County Register.
Insight: Frieri posted 37 saves with a 3.80 ERA, 1.238 WHIP and 98 Ks in 68 2/3 IP. However, if Scoiscia keeps to this limiter it might cost him a couple of save in 2014.
Kole Calhoun, RF3/11/2014 2:11:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun is not in Tuesday's lineup due to a sore hip.
Insight: The 26-year-old shouldn't be out long, its sore, not a serious injury. He hit .282 with eight homers, 32 RBI and an .809 OPS in 58 games last season after putting up a .354 average, 12 homers and a 1.047 OPS in 59 games at Triple-A. He's expected to start in left field for the Angels and could leadoff which would be a great spot for fantasy owners.
Josh Hamilton, RF3/8/2014 1:25:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles right fielder Josh Hamilton will make his Cactus League debut in about a week, according to manager Mike Scioscia. in his recovery from a strained calf.
Insight: Hamilton suffered a strained calf. He'll be fine for Opening Day, though expectations are unclear after a lackluster .250 batting average in 2013.
Josh Hamilton, RF3/2/2014 2:26:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles right fielder Josh Hamilton is reportedly making great progress in his recovery from a strained calf. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register
Insight: Hamilton suffered the injury on Tuesday. He'll be fine for Opening Day, though fantasy owners might have a hard time trusting him after slumping to a lackluster .250 batting average in 2013.
Josh Hamilton, RF2/26/2014 4:31:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton (strained calf) will miss at least two weeks, manager Mike Scioscia said. SOURCE: Alden Gonzalez, mlb.com.
Insight: The team is optimistic he'll still be ready for Opening Day, but we would have liked to see him get a full slate of spring training at-bats after his disappointing 2013 season. The outfielder came to camp having gained 20-25 pounds of muscle to try to regain his power.
C.J. Wilson, SP2/25/2014 5:26:00 PM
Description: Angels starter C.J. Wilson tweeted out a lighthearted message to say he's fine after taking a comebacker off the left side of his head during live batting practice on Tuesday. SOURCE: mlb.com
Insight: "He was very cognizant; he was aware of what was going on, what was happening, and never lost consciousness," Angels GM Jerry Dipoto said. "The initial read is that neurologically he is fine." Wilson went 17-7 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP last season even though the Angels only won 78 games and has averaged 15 wins per season with a 3.37 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in four years since becoming a full-time starter.
Josh Hamilton, RF2/25/2014 4:28:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton will be shut down for a few days due to a strained left calf, according to Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Hamilton was seen leaving the clubhouse on crutches. Coming off a disappointing season in 2013 (.250, 21 HR, 79 RBI, this is the last thing that Hamilton needed. For now, consider him day-to-day.
C.J. Wilson, SP2/25/2014 3:53:00 PM
Description: Angels starter C.J. Wilson was hit in the head while throwing batting practice, according to the Los Angeles Angels.
Insight: Wilson walked off under his own power, but we'll know more after he goes through all the tests. He was 17-7 with a 3.39 ERA and 1.342 WHIP last season.
Mike Trout, CF2/23/2014 3:23:00 PM
Description: The Angels and Mike Trout are working on a six-year contract extension that could pay him close to $150 million. SOURCE: Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports
Insight: Trout's current salary pays him just over $500,000 a year so this would represent a hefty raise. After finishing second in AL MVP voting two years in a row, the move seems like a wise investment. Trout recently said that he would like to steal more bases this season. That's obviously good news for his fantasy owners.
Mark Mulder, SP2/16/2014 4:06:00 PM
Description: Angels lefty Mark Mulder's comeback appears to be over before it began. He suffered a ruptured left Achilles during agility drills, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Mulder's surgery has a 5-8 month recovery time. The left-hander was attempting to pitch in the big leagues for the first time since 2008. He initially retired due to mechanical issues related to multiple shoulder injuries but made a major adjustment to his motion during the winter and was expected to compete for a rotation spot with the Angels.
Mark Mulder, SP2/15/2014 2:03:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Mark Mulder hurt his ankle in warmups on Saturday. SOURCE: Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com
Insight: He was scheduled to pitch a bullpen session but now that's probably not going to happen. Consider the lefthander day-to-day.
Kole Calhoun, RF2/14/2014 8:56:00 AM
Description: According to mlb.com, Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun looks like the leading candidate to lead off for the Angels this season.
Insight: The 26-year-old hit .282 with eight homers, 32 RBI and an .809 OPS in 58 games last season after putting up a .354 average, 12 homers and a 1.047 OPS in 59 games at Triple-A. He's expected to start in left field for Los Angeles and would be in a great spot for fantasy production if he leads off in front of the Angels' probable 2-3-4 hitters Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton.
Albert Pujols, 1B2/13/2014 4:00:00 PM
Description: According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is down seven pounds and says both his knee and foot are 100 percent.
Insight: Pujols had knee surgery before last season and then played through a torn plantar fascia in his foot. In 99 games, he hit a career-low .258 with 17 home runs and a .767 OPS, but he should bounce back at least to his 2012 numbers this season now that he's healthy.
Albert Pujols, 1B2/6/2014 12:20:00 PM
Description: In the no news is good news category, Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols is having a "normal" offseason, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Insight: Pujols didn't play after late July and produced a career-low 17 HR and 64 RBI. He might end up being a fantasy bargain if fantasy owners think at 34-years-old he might not return to his regular production level.
Jerome Williams, SP2/3/2014 2:56:00 PM
Description: Pitcher Jerome Williams has reportedly reached an agreement with the Houston Astros for 2014.
Insight: Williams wasn't going to be a starter in Anaheim, but could be in Houston. He was 9-10 with a 4.57 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 25 starts last season. In eight seasons he's yet to prove he's a fantasy-worthy pitcher.
Carlos Pena, 1B1/28/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, the Angels have signed 35-year-old first baseman Carlos Pena to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Insight: Pena has hit just .211 with a .767 OPS over the last five seasons. He hit .207 with eight homers in 89 games with Houston and Kansas City last year and will try to earn a bench role with the Angels in spring training. The Angels also signed former Tigers and Yankees outfielder Brennan Boesch to a minor league deal Tuesday.
Mark Mulder, SP1/1/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: According to Jerry Crasnick of espn.com, the Angels have signed Mark Mulder to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 36-year-old retired in 2009 due to mechanical issues caused by two shoulder surgeries, but he decided to make a comeback after tweaking his delivery to emulate Dodgers reliever Paco Rodriguez.
Insight: Mulder's fastball was clocked at 89-90 mph during a mound session for three teams last month, and the Angels were considered the frontrunner to sign him. It's unclear if Mulder will attempt to come back as a starter or reliever. The lefty is 103-60 with a 4.18 ERA in his career, but he was 97-50 with a 3.87 ERA in his first six seasons and finished second in AL Cy Young voting in 2001.
Raul Ibanez, LF12/18/2013 4:23:00 PM
Description: Raul Ibanez's new one-year deal with Anaheim will be worth $2.75 million according to Sports Illustrated.
Insight: That's exactly how much he made last season with Seattle. It's amazing how productive Ibanez continues to be in his early 40s but fantasy owners have to know the end is coming sooner or later. We wouldn't take him until later in the draft.
David Freese, 3B11/22/2013 5:31:00 PM
Description: The Angels have acquired third baseman David Freese and reliever Fernando Salas from the Cardinals for Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk.
Insight: Freese, the 2011 ALCS and World Series MVP and a 2012 NL All-Star, hit just .262 with nine homers, 60 RBI and a .721 OPS in 138 games this past season before hitting under .200 in all three postseason series.
Mark Trumbo, DH11/10/2013 3:20:00 PM
Description: If the Red Sox are unable to re-sign Mike Napoli, they'll look to acquire Angels DH/1B Mark Trumbo. SOURCE: Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Insight: Trumbo seems likely to be dealt this offseason. The Marlins and Padres have also expressed interest in the power-hitting first baseman.
Mark Trumbo, DH10/30/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles DH/1B Mark Trumbo could be available in a trade this offseason. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: The Padres are one team that could be interested in acquiring him. The Angels are dangling Trumbo and outfielder Peter Bourjos in an effort to improve their starting rotation. Trumbo smacked 34 HR last season but he hurt his fantasy value by hitting just .234 in 620 at bats.
Mark Trumbo, DHCold9/29/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo is six for his last 48 (.125) with 16 strikeouts and doesn't have a favorable matchup Sunday.
Insight: Trumbo will face Yu Darvish in the season finale. He has gone 4-for-23 (.174) with eight strikeouts against the Texas right-hander.
Josh Hamilton, RF9/28/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton is getting a day off Saturday against the Rangers.
Insight: Hamilton has hit .327 with five homers, 27 RBI and a .906 OPS over his last 43 games to bring his average up to .249 and his OPS to .737. He has hit just 21 homers with 78 RBI this year; fortunately, there will only be one game left in his miserable season after Saturday.
Howie Kendrick, 2B9/28/2013 11:05:00 AM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick owns Texas starter Derek Holland. He has hit .378 with seven doubles, two homers, 12 RBI and a 1.083 OPS against the left-hander.
Insight: Kendrick has an extensive history against Holland, getting in 45 at-bats against him. The second baseman has hit safely in 11 of his 12 games since returning from the disabled list and is hitting .301 with 13 homers, 53 RBI and a .783 OPS in 469 at-bats this season.
J.B. Shuck, CF9/27/2013 9:29:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder J.B. Shuck left Thursday's game with a sprained right ankle, but given that the Angels are playing out the string, he's likely done for the final series.
Insight: Shuck batted .292 with 2 HR, 39 RBI and 60 runs in 431 at-bats.
Mark Trumbo, DHCold9/26/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo is batting seventh Thursday.
Insight: Trumbo's average dropped to .233 after he went 0-for-24 over his last seven games.
Josh Hamilton, RF9/26/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: In 24 at-bats against Texas' Matt Garza, Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton has collected five hits while striking out six times.
Insight: Hamilton has hit .329 with a .914 OPS over his last 41 games to raise his average from .217 to .248, but he slugged just five home runs in that span and has 21 on the year. He shouldn't be started Thursday against Garza.
Mike Trout, CF9/25/2013 6:09:00 PM
Description: According to his agent, the Angels haven't approached Mike Trout yet about signing a long-term contract. SOURCE: Los Angeles Times
Insight: Despite being an MVP candidate for the second straight season, Trout (.324, 26 HR, 92 RBI, 33 SB) will only earn $510,000 in salary in 2013 (plus whatever he makes for doing all those Subway commercials). The earliest he could become a free agent is 2017. On a side note, Trout didn't play Wednesday against Oakland. It was a routine off day and he should be back in there Thursday against Texas.
Mark Trumbo, DH9/25/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo is 5-for-11 (.455) with a home run and five RBI versus Oakland starter Dan Straily.
Insight: Trumbo is posting solid power numbers (34 HR, 66 extra base hits, but fantasy owners would like to see a batting average above its current .235 level and a lower strikeout total (174 in 154 games). This is a favorable matchup and Trumbo should be in all lineups.
Jered Weaver, SP9/22/2013 2:16:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jered Weaver (forearm) should be able to start Wednesday against the Athletics after throwing a successful bullpen session Sunday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Weaver is dealing with some forearm tightness and missed his last start. The right-hander is 10-8 with a 3.36 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 147 1/3 innings this season.
Josh Hamilton, RF9/22/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton is hitting .333 with two homers and 10 RBI over his last 10 games, but he has been horrible against Seattle's Felix Hernandez
Insight: Hamilton is just 10-for-59 (.169) with one homer and 18 strikeouts against Hernandez. That's enough of a sample size to make Hamilton a must-sit Sunday.
Mike Trout, CFHot9/22/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout is one of the rare hitters who excels against Seattle starter Felix Hernandez, who will start Sunday for the first time since Sept. 2.
Insight: Trout has lived up to expectations, which was tough to do because expectations were massive coming into the season. He has hit .327 with a .434 on-base percentage, .565 slugging percentage, 26 homers, 92 RBI, 108 runs, 102 walks and 33 steals.
Jered Weaver, SP9/19/2013 2:37:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jered Weaver (forearm) has been scratched from his start Friday, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Weaver is dealing with some forearm tightness. The right-hander is 10-8 with a 3.36 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 147 1/3 innings this season.
Tommy Hanson, SP9/16/2013 7:24:00 PM
Description: The Angels recalled righthander Tommy Hanson from Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.
Insight: Hanson was demoted a little over a month ago. In 13 major league starts this season, he carries a 5.59 ERA. The Angels are planning to use him in long relief down the stretch.

Luis Jimenez, 3B9/13/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: Angels third baseman Luis Jimenez left Saturday's game with a right thumb contusion and hasn't played since then.
Insight: Jimenez has little to no fantasy value with a .260 batting average, no power (zero homers, .608 OPS) and no speed (zero steals) to speak of, therefor this injury shouldn't effect any fantasy lineups.
Josh Hamilton, RFHot9/11/2013 10:08:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton went 3-for-3 Wednesday to raise his average to .247. He's eight for his last 12.

Insight: Hamilton came in hitting .302 in his past 63 at-bats but with zero home runs in that span. Tuesday's blast was his 20th of the year in 515 at-bats, down from 43 in 562 at-bats last season.
Mark Trumbo, DHHot9/10/2013 10:19:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo jumped all over the Blue Jays for five hits, including three doubles and a homer, two RBI and five runs Tuesday night.

Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick (sprained left knee) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list for Tuesday's game against Toronto.
Insight: Kendrick hasn't played since Aug. 5. He's had a nice offensive season, batting .301 with 11 HR, 47 RBI and 48 runs in 108 games. If he returns today, he'll have a nice matchup as he's a career .350 hitter against Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle with a home run and a 1.109 OPS.

Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (wrist) will not hit the rest of the season, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

Mike Trout, CFHot9/7/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles outfielder Mike Trout is a career .409 hitter (9-for-22) against Texas starter Derek Holland.
Insight: He's taken Holland deep twice for a 1.291 OPS. After a slow April, Trout has once again become a fantasy stud. The Angels outfielder has batted at least .327 in each of the last four months and is hitting .550 in six September games.
Peter Bourjos, CF9/4/2013 9:49:00 PM

Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton is not in the lineup Sunday at Milwaukee.

Jason Vargas, SP8/29/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jason Vargas fired seven shutout frames Thursday in a victory over the Rays.
Insight: It was one of Vargas' better outings of the season. Usually when you think of the Angels rotation, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson are the first names that come to mind. That's probably still true but Vargas is slowing creeping into the conversation. His 3.54 ERA in 18 starts is a career-best.
Jered Weaver, SP8/25/2013 8:10:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jered Weaver fired eight innings of three-hit ball Sunday in a win against the Mariners.
Insight: The only run he allowed came on a solo homer by Dustin Ackley in the third inning. The victory Sunday snaps a two-game losing streak for Weaver. The eight strikeouts he recorded were his most since July 24th against Minnesota.

Description: Angels starter Jason Vargas has allowed 152 batters to reach base in 107 1/3 innings this season (1.42 WHIP), but his ERA is 3.77.
Insight: Vargas has stranded 79.3 percent of baserunners, a mark that would rank 13th in baseball if he had enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. The left-hander isn't a dominant pitcher like most of the players on top of the LOB% leaderboard, so he'll remain a risky play going forward.
Mike Trout, CF8/25/2013 10:47:00 AM
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout went 1-for-5 with a homer and two RBI Saturday against Seattle.
Insight: Trout is 1-for-9 with four K in two games after missing three straight with a tight hamstring. As long as he's healthy, his bat should come around quickly.

Description: Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols will not return this season. He's been out since late July with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot. SOURCE: Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com
Insight: In 99 games, he produced a career-low 17 HR and 64 RBI. Pujols will turn 34 in January. At this stage of his career, he no longer warrants a first round fantasy selection.

Josh Hamilton, RF8/18/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton blasted a walkoff homer in Saturday's 10-inning win over Houston.
Insight: It hasn't been a great season for Hamilton (.227, 18 HR, 59 RBI) but he can still be clutch when he wants to be. Saturday's home run was his second walkoff of the season and the fifth of his career. Five of his 18 homers this season have come against the Astros.

Insight: Scioscia admitted that Frieri's confidence "might be a little nicked right now" and said that he'll try to use matchups more in the ninth going forward. "Whatever decision they make, I have to accept that," Frieri said. "We need to win. We can't be losing games late. Hopefully I get through this and they give me their confidence again." There's no obvious option for saves behind Frieri in the Angels bullpen.

Insight: Although he's had a tough second half (.200 in 40 at-bats), he's still batting .298 this season with 11 HR and 43 RBI.
Mike Trout, CFHot7/29/2013 10:37:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout reached base in all four plate appearances Monday at Texas, going 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run.
Insight: Is Trout a robot sent to Earth to produce the same season every year? It seems that way. He basically has produced a carbon copy of 2012, hitting .324 with a .404 OBP and a .561 slugging percentage this year. He hit .326 with a .399 OBP and a .564 slugging percentage as a rookie.
Ernesto Frieri, RP7/29/2013 10:23:00 PM
Description: Angels closer Ernesto Frieri blew his third save of the season Monday at Texas.
Insight: Frieri (4.06 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) gave up three hits, including two homers, to blow a 3-2 lead and spoil Jered Weaver's strong start. This comes after he gave up five runs in a loss on July 23. Frieri has 25 saves but has regressed from last season.
Jered Weaver, SPHot7/29/2013 10:13:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jered Weaver was in line for his third straight win Monday at Texas, but Ernesto Frieri served up a game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Insight: Weaver fired seven innings of one-run ball and has a 2.84 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in 14 starts. However, he's just 5-5 even after winning four of his last six outings.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/28/2013 5:17:00 PM
Description: According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that Albert Pujols (foot) will be out "a significant amount of time" and possibly the rest of the season.
Insight: He's dealing with a partial tear of the left plantar fascia. Pujols has been playing through plantar fasciitis for the entire season and it is most likely the reason why he is hitting just .258 with 17 home runs and a .767 OPS this year. The soreness in his plant foot has sapped Pujols' power -- he's hitting just .190 on flyballs and has a career-low 11.1 percent HR/FB.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/28/2013 1:10:00 PM
Description: Josh Hamilton is not your man Sunday against Oakland. He's carries a pathetic .083 lifetime average versus A's righthander Jarrod Parker.
Insight: Hamilton blasted his 15th homer yesterday but he's still hitting only .223 for the season. Sunday's not going to be the day he turns things around.
Mark Trumbo, DH7/28/2013 1:08:00 PM
Description: Mark Trumbo whiffed three times on Saturday and it's probably not going to get a whole lot better on Sunday. The Angels designated hitter is just 1-for-12 against Oakland starter Jarrod Parker.
Insight: Trumbo is having a pretty typical season with decent power numbers (22 jacks, 60 RBI) and a low batting average (.250). Expect Trumbo to add to his team-high strikeout total (106 K's) Sunday versus Parker (6-6, 3.79 ERA).
Howie Kendrick, 2BCold7/28/2013 1:04:00 PM
Description: Stay far, far away from Howie Kendrick on Sunday. The Los Angeles second baseman has been brutal against A's righty Jarrod Parker (.125 AVG in 16 at bats).
Insight: The second half has been Struggle City for Kendrick (.194 AVG in 31 at bats). Don't expect things to get any better on Sunday.
Erick Aybar, SS7/28/2013 1:00:00 PM
Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar isn't known for his hitting (.385 career slugging percentage) but he swings the bat very well versus A's starter Jarrod Parker.
Insight: Aybar is hitting a mindboggling .615 in 13 trips to the plate against the Oakland righthander. Ignore the fact that he's hitless in his last two games and slot him into your lineup.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/28/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols has been placed on the disabled list.
Insight: He's dealing with a partial tear of the left plantar fascia. From the looks of it, Pujols could be out for a long time. The injury's been bothering him since spring training so give Pujols credit for hanging in there as long as he did.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/27/2013 3:37:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols (foot) is undergoing an MRI on his left foot to determine if he has a torn tendon, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. He's likely to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Pujols has dealt with plantar fasciitis all season but had played 99 of Los Angeles' 101 games prior to sitting out Saturday. The condition didn't improve during the All-Star break. He'll receive a cortisone shot if he doesn't have a tear.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/27/2013 12:53:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is getting Saturday's game off.
Insight: Despite dealing with plantar fasciitis all season, a condition that didn't improve over the All-Star break according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com, Pujols has played 99 of Los Angeles' 101 games (albeit just 34 at first base).
Howie Kendrick, 2BCold7/27/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: A matchup with Tommy Milone of Oakland might be able to shake Howie Kendrick out of his recent slump. The Angels second baseman is hitting .190 with 13 K over his last 16 games.
Insight: Kendrick had Friday off to rest, and he'll return to face Milone Saturday. e has gone 6-for-14 (.429) with one homer against the left-hander.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/27/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton is hitting .158 with a .411 OPS in 101 at-bats against lefties this year, but he has good numbers against Athletics southpaw Tommy Milone.
Insight: Hamilton is a .429 hitter (6-for-14) with one homer against Milone. With August approaching, Hamilton is only batting .222 with 14 home runs and a .683 OPS.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/27/2013 9:26:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols has doubled six times off Athletics starter Tommy Milone in 14 career at-bats.
Insight: Pujols is 7-for-14 (.500) against Milone and is hitting .444 with a 1.085 OPS over his last four games.
Howie Kendrick, 2B7/26/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick is only hitting .190 (12-for-63) with 13 K over his last 16 games, and he's just 1-for-19 (.053) in his career against Oakland starter Bartolo Colon.
Insight: Kendrick is having a strong season -- even with the slump, he's hitting .301 with 11 home runs and 41 RBI -- but he's struggling lately and has been held in check by Colon. Keep him on the bench Friday.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/26/2013 9:35:00 AM
Description: After going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI Thursday against Oakland, Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is hitting .259 with 62 RBI.
Insight: Pujols' batting average and OPS are down, but he's still on pace for 29 homers and 103 RBI per 162 games. He has gone 7-for-13 (.538) with one homer and four RBI over his last three contests.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/25/2013 5:48:00 PM
Description: The Angels will have Josh Hamilton (ankle) back in the lineup Thursday.
Insight: He's missed the last three games with inflammation in his right ankle. The former MVP has been abysmal at the plate all season, hitting no higher than .237 and no more than six home runs in any month this season.
Jered Weaver, SPHot7/24/2013 9:30:00 PM
Description: Jered Weaver was unbelievable Wednesday in a win over the Twins.
Insight: The Angels ace limited Minnesota to just two hits over eight shutout frames. He walked one and struck out nine. Wednesday was Weaver's fourth win in his last five starts (1.32 ERA during that stretch).
Joe Blanton, SPCold7/24/2013 9:13:00 PM
Description: Joe Blanton has lost his place in the Angels' starting rotation. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: This was bound to happen sooner or later. Blanton has been arguably the worst pitcher in the major leagues this season, compiling a brutal 2-13 record in 20 appearances. Garrett Richards will move into the rotation.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/24/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: The Angels expect Josh Hamilton to return on Thursday. SOURCE: William Boor, MLB.com
Insight: He's missed the last three games with inflammation in his right ankle. It's good to see Hamilton healthy again but remember, this isn't the Hamilton we've seen in years past. He's only hitting .223 with 14 HR in 350 at bats.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/24/2013 9:41:00 AM
Description: While Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton's MRI revealed inflammation in his right ankle and nothing broken, he will miss Wednesday's game after being given a cortisone shot, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Hamilton has been disappointing this season, batting .223 with 14 HR and 48 RBI.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/23/2013 9:11:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton's X-rays came back negative and an MRI revealed inflammation in his right ankle, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

Josh Hamilton, RF7/23/2013 6:34:00 PM

Insight: This is his second straight absence since feeling discomfort in his ankle Sunday.
Tommy Hanson, SP7/23/2013 10:28:00 AM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (forearm) has been activated from the DL to start Tuesday against the Twins.
Insight: Hanson threw just 59 pitches in his rehab start Thursday, so he likely won't go more than a few innings Tuesday. He has fallen off the fantasy radar over the past two seasons and has an ugly 5.10 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP this year. His 2009 rookie season was his best when he went 11-4 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.183 WHIP.
Josh Hamilton, RF7/22/2013 7:48:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton has been scratched from Monday night's starting lineup. SOURCE: Pedro Moura, Orange County Register

Tommy Hanson, SP7/21/2013 4:58:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (forearm) will return from the DL to start Tuesday against the Twins, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Hanson threw just 59 pitches in his rehab start Thursday, so he likely won't go more than a few innings Tuesday. He has fallen off the fantasy radar over the past two seasons and has an ugly 5.10 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP this year.
Howie Kendrick, 2B7/21/2013 12:43:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles second baseman Howie Kendrick hasn't had a lot of success against A's righthander Bartolo Colon.
Insight: He's just 1-for-16 against Colon in his career. It's a challenging matchup and one that fantasy owners would be better off avoiding.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/21/2013 12:36:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols has an excellent track record against Oakland starter Bartolo Colon.
Insight: The three-time MVP holds a .417 career average versus Colon. Pujols is hitting .292 in July, his highest average for any month this season.
C.J. Wilson, SPHot7/21/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Angels lefthander C.J. Wilson was lights out Saturday against Oakland.
Insight: Wilson only surrendered three hits in his 8 1/3 innings of work Saturday in Anaheim. Since giving up five runs in an outing against Detroit at the end of last month, the two-time All-Star is 3-1 with a 0.62 ERA.
Peter Bourjos, CF7/18/2013 3:25:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos' fractured right wrist has not completely healed, according to Angels beat writer Mike DiGiovanna.
Insight: Bourjos has no current timetable for returning to the field. He had already missed about six weeks this season due to a hamstring injury. When on the field, he batted .333 with an .849 OPS.
Tommy Hanson, SP7/14/2013 3:24:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (forearm) will start a rehab assignment Thursday, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Hanson will throw 60 pitches during his first rehab start, so he's likely going to need another one to get his pitch count closer to 100.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/14/2013 12:00:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols has gone just 2-for-16 with five strikeouts against Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: Iwakuma has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last five starts, but he still has a 2.97 ERA and has been able to keep Pujols in check.
Mike Trout, CFHot7/14/2013 10:21:00 AM
Description: Angels superstar Mike Trout has collected just two hits in 15 career at-bats against Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: However, he's hitting .407 with a 1.231 OPS in his last 15 games. There's no way you can sit him, even against Iwakuma.
Tommy Hanson, SP7/13/2013 6:06:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (forearm) will throw a simulated game Saturday, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Hanson threw a bullpen session Wednesday, his first since suffering a strained forearm in late June. The right-hander could be back in Los Angeles' rotation right after the All-Star break.
Mike Trout, CFHot7/13/2013 10:21:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles center fielder Mike Trout is a career .467 hitter with a 1.155 OPS versus Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Trout (.323, 15 HR, 59 RBI, 21 SB) is back to being the guy who dominated at the plate last season. He's batting .406 over the past nine games. He's a must start, even against one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/12/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is hitless in eight at-bats versus Seattle left-hander Joe Saunders.

C.J. Wilson, SP7/11/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson finished the first half with a strong outing against Chicago.
Insight: He only allowed one run on four hits in seven innings of work. The lefthander is 5-3 with a 2.60 ERA since June 1st.
Mike Trout, CFHot7/11/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles center fielder Mike Trout had another monster game Wednesday versus the Cubs.
Insight: Trout (.320, 15 HR, 58 RBI, 21 SB) smacked three hits and reached base four out of five times as the Angels won for the third time in their last four games. The 21-year-old New Jersey native is one of four players in MLB with at least ten homers and 20 stolen bases. Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jason Kipnis are the others.
Josh Hamilton, RFHot7/11/2013 9:29:00 AM
Description: Josh Hamilton is finally beginning to show signs of life. The Angels right fielder cranked two homers Wednesday night in a 13-2 win over the Cubs.

Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

Josh Hamilton, RF7/7/2013 9:20:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles right fielder Josh Hamilton smacked a walk-off home run in extra innings Saturday against Boston.
Insight: Hamilton also contributed an RBI single as part of a four-run comeback in the ninth inning. Saturday was a rare departure from what has pretty much been a disaster of a season for Hamilton (.229, 12 HR, 34 RBI). Right now the five-time All-Star is hitting 67 points below his career average.
Albert Pujols, 1B7/6/2013 10:48:00 AM

Insight: Pujols went 0-for-4 Wednesday against his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals, and is 4-for-41 (.098) with eight K over his last 10 games.
Mike Trout, CFHot7/2/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout was held out of the lineup Sunday for the first time this season due to a minor hamstring issue, but is expected to be back out on the field after a nice two-day break.
Insight: Trout finished June on fire with a .358 average, 11 doubles, three homers, 15 RBI, eight steals and a 14/15 K/BB in 26 games. He should be re-installed in all lineups.
C.J. Wilson, SP6/30/2013 5:40:00 PM
Description: Put another one in the W column for C.J. Wilson. The Angels lefthander won for the fourth time in a row Sunday versus Houston.
Insight: In seven innings, Wilson (8-5, 3.63 ERA) allowed one unearned run and just three hits. Wilson walked three and struck out ten. He'll finish the month with a 4-2 record (3.05 ERA in 38 1/3 innings).

Joe Blanton, SP6/29/2013 9:55:00 PM
Description: Blanton was 1-10 with a 5.87 ERA after his start on June 9, but he has thrown three straight quality starts and won his first game since May 23 Saturday.
Insight: Blanton (2-10, 5.07 ERA) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six over seven innings Saturday against Houston. The right-hander had a .370 BABIP over his first 13 starts this season and allowed 111 hits in 76 2/3 innings during that span, but he has allowed just 15 hits while posting a BABIP below .250. A little luck can go a long way.

Insight: Kendrick's strikeout rate is down from 19.4 percent to 17.1 percent since last season and he is hitting line drives at the highest rate in the majors. That's a recipe for a .300 batting average.
Erick Aybar, SSHot6/29/2013 9:46:00 PM
Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar picked up a pair of singles and two RBI Saturday at Houston.
Insight: It was Aybar's fifth multi-hit effort and fourth two-RBI game in his last six games. He has raised his average from .270 to .285 in that timeframe.

Jered Weaver, SP6/27/2013 10:39:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles starter Jered Weaver was brilliant Thursday against the Tigers.

Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos' thumb injury will keep him out of the lineup again Thursday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Bourjos jammed his left thumb while trying to break up a double play Sunday, and while X-rays came back negative he hasn't been able to return to the lineup yet. J.B. Shuck, who is 9-for-16 over his last four games, will draw another start.

Description: Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo is getting a day off Thursday.
Insight: Trumbo is only hitting .130 with 12 strikeouts and a .461 OPS over his last 11 games, so he could use the rest.
Mike Trout, CF6/27/2013 10:52:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout hit his 13th homer of the season Wednesday against Detroit.
Insight: It's hard to deny Trout has lived up to the massive preseason expectations. He's hitting .308 with 13 homers, 51 RBI, 56 runs, 19 steals and a .924 OPS, making him a legitimate six-category dominator.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/27/2013 10:03:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is just 2-for-16 (.125) with two RBI and four strikeouts against Tigers starter Doug Fister.

Jason Vargas, SP6/26/2013 7:35:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas had surgery to remove a blood clot from his left arm pit on Wednesday.

Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Tigers, according to Eric Kay.

Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/25/2013 11:16:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton went 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored Tuesday against the Tigers. Of course, he also struck out in his other two at-bats.

C.J. Wilson, SP6/25/2013 11:13:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings Tuesday at Detroit, but he picked up his seventh win anyway.
Insight: The Angels scored 14 runs in support. However, this start further affirms why fantasy owners do not want to start Wilson away from Angel Stadium -- he's 3-3 with a 5.36 ERA on the road and 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA at home.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/25/2013 6:02:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (thumb) is hoping to return to action Wednesday, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times.
Insight: Bourjos jammed his left thumb while trying to break up a double play Sunday, but X-rays came back negative. He missed all of May with a hamstring injury, but is not expected to go back on the DL.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/25/2013 5:06:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (thumb) will miss Tuesday's game but is not expected to be placed on the disabled list, according to the LA Times.
Insight: Bourjos jammed his left thumb while trying to break up a double play Sunday, but X-rays came back negative. He missed all of May with a hamstring injury, so another DL stint would likely cause fantasy owners to drop him en masse even though he is hitting .331 with three homers, 20 runs and four steals in 35 games.
Jason Vargas, SP6/25/2013 4:46:00 PM
Description: Angels lefty Jason Vargas will undergo surgery this week to remove a blood clot from his left armpit, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times.
Insight: Vargas expects to resume throwing in about two weeks, so it looks like he could be back in mid-July. Dillon Gee had surgery for a blood clot in his shoulder last July and ended up missing the rest of the season, but it doesn't look like Vargas' situation is that severe.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/25/2013 4:23:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton has a sore right wrist but is in Tuesday's lineup against Detroit.
Insight: Luckily he didn't need a trip to the disabled list. It didn't look like Hamilton could sink any lower after April and May, but the former MVP is hitting .171 with a .543 OPS in June, so start him at your own risk.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/25/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton has a sore right wrist and is questionable for Tuesday's game against Detroit.
Insight: We will see if he needs a trip to the disabled list, but time off can't hurt the way he's swinging the bat. It didn't look like Hamilton could sink any lower after April and May, but the former MVP is hitting .171 with a .543 OPS in June.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/25/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos suffered a left thumb injury while sliding into second base Sunday and is expected to miss Tuesday's game against Detroit.
Insight: Bourjos seemed to jam his thumb while trying to break up a double play. X-rays came back negative. He missed all of May with an injury and now this. He's not reliable enough, or productive enough, to be an everyday starter in your fantasy lineup.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/23/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos suffered a left thumb injury while sliding into second base Sunday and is day-to-day.
Insight: Bourjos seemed to jam his thumb while trying to break up a double play. X-rays came back negative.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/22/2013 2:08:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton, who was not in the starting lineup Friday against the Pirates will not start on Saturday either. He has a sore right wrist.
Insight: We will see if he needs a trip to the disabled list, but time off can't hurt the way he's swinging the bat. It didn't look like Hamilton could sink any lower after April and May, but the former MVP is hitting .171 with a .543 OPS in June.
Albert Pujols, 1B6/22/2013 12:26:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is just 1-for-13 against Pirated lefty Francisco Liriano.
Insight: Pujols is starting to heat up, batting .380 over the past two weeks, including four long balls. Still, he's way off fantasy expectations and this unfavorable matchup isn't likely to help.
Howie Kendrick, 2B6/22/2013 12:24:00 PM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick is 7-for-14 with three extra base hits and a 1.462 OPS versus Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Insight: Kendrick was hitless on Friday, but is still batting .325 with eight homers, 36 RBI and an .834 OPS. He's been batting fifth in the lineup lately which should yield plenty of RBI opportunities.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/22/2013 9:33:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton was not in the starting lineup Friday against the Pirates and the team is blaming it on a sore right wrist.
Insight: We will see if he needs a trip to the disabled list, but time off can't hurt the way he's swinging the bat. It didn't look like Hamilton could sink any lower after April and May, but the former MVP is hitting .171 with a .543 OPS in June.
Jerome Williams, SP6/21/2013 8:10:00 PM
Description: Angels pitcher Jerome Williams will rejoin the rotation Saturday with Jason Vargas (blood clot) on the DL.
Insight: Williams has made seven starts and 18 appearances overall this season. He's 4-2 with a 3.48 ERA as a starter, but he's unlikely to maintain that success.
Jason Vargas, SP6/21/2013 6:58:00 PM
Description: The Angels have placed lefty Jason Vargas on the DL with a blood clot near his left armpit. He'll seek a second opinion before opting for surgery, the team said. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, LA Times.
Insight: Mets starter Dillon Gee had a blood clot in his shoulder last July and missed the rest of the season. Vargas, who has gone 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP this year, could be headed for the same fate if he has to undergo surgery.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/21/2013 6:53:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Pirates, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: It didn't look like Hamilton could sink any lower after April and May, but the former MVP is hitting .171 with a .543 OPS in June.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/20/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos has never had much success against Seattle starter Felix Hernandez, going 3-for-18 (.167) in their matchups.
Insight: Bourjos could be dropped in the order or get a day of rest due to the bad matchup, but in either case fantasy owners should have him on their bench.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/20/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is a career .157 hitter in 51 at-bats against Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez with almost 1/3 of the at-bats ending in a strikeout (16).
Insight: Hamilton has been unable to sustain any sort of success this season due to his strikeouts and this matchup won't help. He was dropped down to seventh in the order on Wednesday .
Mike Trout, CFHot6/20/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout is a career .407 hitter (11-for-27) with four extra base hits and nine RBI againstSeattle ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: After a slow start, Trout is back to being a dynamic force. He's batting .320 over the past month (25 games) with a .402 OBP and an .892 OPS.
Joe Blanton, SP6/19/2013 9:34:00 AM
Description: Angels right-hander Joe Blanton struck out 11 batters and allowed six hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday against Seattle.
Insight: Blanton is 1-10 with a 5.62 ERA and has no fantasy value right now, but that could change if he starts to have better luck. He has a .366 BABIP even though his line-drive rate is only slightly below average.
Erick Aybar, SS6/18/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar has struggled against Mariners starter Jeremy Bonderman.
Insight: Aybar is 3-for-14 with seven strikeouts against the right-hander, who has returned to the majors this season for the first time since 2010 and gone 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over 18 2/3 innings.
Josh Hamilton, RF6/18/2013 9:55:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI Monday against Seattle.
Insight: Hamilton has been unable to sustain any sort of success this season due to his strikeouts. Even Monday he struck out twice, giving him 71 on the year.
Albert Pujols, 1BHot6/18/2013 9:50:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols had four hits in five at-bats Monday night.
Insight: Pujols is starting to heat up. He's hitting .522 (12-for-23) with three doubles, one homer, five RBI and a 2/2 K/BB over his last five games. Pujols' power decline -- he has a 42.9 percent flyball rate and a career-low 10.8 percent HR/FB -- is a concern, but his batting average should continue to rise once he starts having better luck on groundballs. He's hitting just .172 on grounders this season and has a .264 BABIP.
Howie Kendrick, 2BHot6/16/2013 10:57:00 AM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick went 3-for-3 with one RBI and a walk Saturday against the Yankees, and he'll face CC Sabathia Sunday. He's 9-for-19 (.474) against the Yankees left-hander.
Insight: Kendrick is batting .336 with a career-high 29.6 percent line-drive rate and a career-best 17.4 percent HR/FB this season. He's hitting .500 (24-for-48) in June and should be active in all lineups.
Josh Hamilton, RF6/16/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton has just two hits in 17 at-bats against Yankees starter CC Sabathia.
Insight: The free-swinging Hamilton has been an absolute disaster at the plate this season, batting .213 with 22 RBI and 69 strikeouts in 258 at-bats. To put that into context, in 2012 Hamilton had 41 RBI and 23 strikeouts in 95 at-bats from April 14 to May 13.
Tommy Hanson, SP6/16/2013 9:09:00 AM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson struck out eight and allowed two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings in a win over the Yankees Saturday.
Insight: Hanson has a career-low 6.11 K/9 and has allowed eight homers in 45 2/3 innings. His ERA is 3.94, but he has a 1.45 WHIP and a 5.03 FIP.
Howie Kendrick, 2B6/14/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles second baseman Howie Kendrick has had his problems with Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte, going just 4-for-24 (.167) over his career.
Insight: Kendrick has been on a hot streak batting .452 over the past two weeks to raise his average to .324. This matchup, however, is unfavorable.
Albert Pujols, 1B6/12/2013 6:40:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI Wednesday afternoon against the Orioles.
Insight: Pujols started out 0-for-2 but had a single, a double and a home run in his final three at-bats. Pujols has gutted through 64 games this season despite dealing with knee and foot injuries. He's batting .249 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI.
Mark Trumbo, DH6/12/2013 11:57:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles Angels DH Mark Trumbo is not in Wednesday afternoon's lineup, according to Orioles beat writer Roch Kubatko.
Insight: Trumbo is batting .264 with 15 HR and 44 RBI this season, but has stumbled over the past week and could probably use the time off.
Howie Kendrick, 2BHot6/12/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles second baseman Howie Kendrick is a career .600 hitter versus Baltimore starter Jason Hammel.
Insight: He's 14-for-27 (.518) over his last six games. Kendrick's hot streak has helped push his batting average to .321 with eight homers and 32 RBI.
Mike Trout, CF6/11/2013 9:51:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout has homered in two straight games.
Insight: Trout will stay in the leadoff spot despite Peter Bourjos' activation from the DL. Trout batted leadoff for all 639 of his plate appearances last season. He's hitting .303 with 12 home runs, 42 RBI, 47 runs and 14 steals.
Ryan Madson, RP6/11/2013 2:05:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) is still throwing off the flat ground, not the mound as he tries to recover from his last setback after Tommy John surgery.
Insight: At this point there is no guarantee that Madson will return in 2013 and should not be taking up space on any rosters. Ernesto Frieri the man to have in the Angels' bullpen.
Mike Trout, CF6/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout will continue to bat leadoff despite the activation of Peter Bourjos from the disabled list.
Insight: Trout has batted in the No. 2 hole for most of the season, but in his breakout 2012 campaign he batted leadoff for all 639 plate appearances. Bourjos will bat ninth.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/10/2013 3:45:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (hamstring) has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: He was batting .313 with 12 runs scored, two homers, eight RBI and an .827 OPS before the late-April injury. Of significance is whether the team will put Bourjos back in the leadoff spot, or leave just-moved Mike Trout at the top of the order. Bourjos loses a lot of value if he's down in the order.
Albert Pujols, 1B6/10/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is hitless in eight at-bats versus Baltimore veteran Freddy Garcia.
Insight: Pujols is hitting .241 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI this season which actually puts him slightly behind where he was last year at this time. We know his foot is bothering him and at some point he'll likely need to rest it.
Josh Hamilton, RF6/10/2013 10:44:00 AM
Description: Josh Hamilton is a career .333 hitter (4-for-12) against Freddy Garcia with three homer runs and a 1.468 OPS.
Insight: His .212 batting average through 62 games has fantasy owners growing impatient. The team has started him in the No. 2 hole of late in hopes that with Trout on base and Pujols for protection he'll see more hittable fastballs.
Joe Blanton, SP6/9/2013 6:40:00 PM
Description: Angels right-hander Joe Blanton allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in five innings Sunday against Boston. He served up three homers.
Insight: Blanton has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball this season and is now 1-10 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. It's astounding the Angels have allowed him to throw 76 2/3 innings.
Albert Pujols, 1B6/9/2013 6:17:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols blasted a solo homer Sunday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Pujols is hitting .241 with 10 home runs this season in 272 plate appearances. He'll need some better results on balls in play (.234) to raise his batting average. That will be tough if he doesn't improve his career-low 11.2 percent HR/FB.
Mike Trout, CF6/8/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout will return to the top of the lineup for Saturday's game.
Insight: Trout has batted in the No. 2 hole for most of the season, but in his breakout 2012 campaign he batted leadoff for all 639 plate appearances.
Josh Hamilton, RF6/8/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Josh Hamilton is a career .067 hitter (1-for-15) against Boston starter Clay Buchholz.
Insight: His .216 batting average through 59 games is easily the lowest of his career and fantasy owners are growing impatient. Hamilton shouldn't be having this much trouble as he didn't switch leagues like Albert Pujols did when he struggled early last season. Sit him against Buchholz.
Howie Kendrick, 2BHot6/6/2013 9:31:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles second baseman Howie Kendrick delivered four hits Wednesday in a loss to the Cubs.
Insight: He's 10-for-16 (.625) over his last four games. Kendrick (.317, 8 HR) is fourth among major league second baseman in RBI (32) and sixth in OPS (.828).
Peter Bourjos, CF6/5/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (hamstring) is targeting Monday for a return to action, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Bourjos has been sidelined since late April with a strained left hamstring. He was batting .313 with 12 runs scored, two homers, eight RBI and an .827 OPS before the injury.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold6/5/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Josh Hamilton is a career .133 hitter (2-for-15) against Cubs starter Matt Garza with no extra base hits and six strikeouts.
Insight: His .217 batting average through 58 games is easily the lowest of his career and fantasy owners are growing impatient. Hamilton shouldn't be having this much trouble as he didn't switch leagues like Albert Pujols did when he struggled early last season.
Peter Bourjos, CF6/4/2013 2:00:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (hamstring) played in his first rehab game without incident and barring a setback should return for the weekend series.
Insight: Bourjos has been sidelined since late April with a strained left hamstring. He was batting .313 with 12 runs scored, 2 HR, 8 RBI and an .827 OPS.
Erick Aybar, SSHot6/4/2013 9:56:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles Angels shortstop Erick Aybar is 9-for-18 (.500) with a 1.304 OPS versus Cubs starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: Aybar has produced three two-hit games in his last four contests to raise his average to .268. Add in a favorable matchup and he's a viable fantasy option for Tuesday.
Garrett Richards, RP6/2/2013 9:02:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Garrett Richards sprained his ankle Sunday against Houston. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: Richards didn't seem too worried about the injury after the game. The Angels might keep him out as a precaution but we wouldn't expect Richards to miss more than a couple games. Now that Richards (2-3, 5.15 ERA) isn't a starter his fantasy value is pretty limited.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/31/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: Josh Hamilton will DH Friday against Houston.
Insight: Hamilton missed two games earlier in the week because of back spasms. His .219 batting average through 53 games is easily the lowest of his career.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/31/2013 2:20:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton didn't play Thursday and is doubtful for Friday's game against Houston. He's dealing with back spasms.
Insight: He missed Tuesday's game with the same injury. Hamilton was starting to find his swing, but the injury has dealt him a setback. He batted just .188 this week.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/30/2013 9:46:00 PM
Description: Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton won't play Thursday against the Dodgers. He's out with back spasms.
Insight: He missed Tuesday's game with the same injury. Mark Trumbo is starting in right in place of Hamilton.
Jered Weaver, SP5/30/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: Angels right-hander Jered Weaver allowed five hits and one run and struck out seven over six innings Wednesday against the Dodgers in his first start back from the DL.
Insight: Weaver missed almost two months with a fractured non-throwing elbow. He dealt with diminished fastball velocity before his injury and didn't throw much harder last night. That could be an issue this season.
Peter Bourjos, CF5/29/2013 8:24:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (hamstring) is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Bourjos has been sidelined since late April with a strained left hamstring. He intensified his running drills Monday and got through them with no problem, so he should be able to return in 10-14 days.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/29/2013 5:59:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is back in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Hamilton was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to back spasms. Luckily, he missed Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu's two-hit shutout.
Ryan Madson, RP5/29/2013 2:50:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) had another setback in his return from Tommy John surgery and has been shut down indefinitely.
Insight: At this point there is no guarantee that Madson will return in 2013. Ernesto Frieri the man to have in the Angels' bullpen.
Jered Weaver, SP5/29/2013 2:48:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jered Weaver has passed all the hurdles, has been activated and is expected to start on Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Weaver has been out almost two months with a broken elbow, but did throw 5 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball in an extended spring training game last week. Joe Blanton (1-7, 6.19 ERA) will probably move to the bullpen when Weaver returns. Make sure he's in your starting lineup for Wednesday.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/29/2013 2:46:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton was scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup due to back spasms and is questionable for Wednesday's game against the LA Dodgers.
Insight: Hamilton has hit .244 in May which unfortunately is still a 40 point improvement over April. He's hit six homers and has a respectable .842 OPS over his last 25 games. He's slowly returning to form.
Albert Pujols, 1B5/29/2013 11:10:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols "owns" Dodgers pitcher Chris Capuano to the tune of a .553 batting average (21-for-38) with five home runs, 12 RBI and a 1.675 OPS.
Insight: Hopefully, this favorable matchup will get Pujols' production headed in an upward direction as he's batting just .255 with a below .800 OPS over the past month.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/28/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton was scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup due to back spasms but he might be available to pinch-hit, according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.
Insight: Hamilton has hit .261 with six homers over his last 19 games, which is an improvement on his .202 average over his first 32 but still well below expectations. The outfielder has struck out in 25.6 percent of his plate appearances, same as last year, but walked in 6.8 percent, down from 9.4 percent in 2012.
Tommy Hanson, SP5/28/2013 7:29:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (personal) has been activated from the restricted list and is expected to rejoin the rotation Friday against Houston.
Insight: Hanson hasn't started since May 4 due to the death of his step-brother. He has been building up his stamina and threw 75 pitches in an extended spring training game over the weekend.
Jarrett Grube, SP5/28/2013 12:03:00 PM
Description: The best pitching prospect this season in Anaheim's minor league system appears to be right-hander Jarret Grube, who is pitching wti the Double-A Arkansas Travelers.
Insight: The 31-year-old is 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and a 49/10 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Given that the Angels are giving up 4.78 runs per game (even after an eight-game winning streak), Grube might be able to help.
Jered Weaver, SP5/28/2013 11:01:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jered Weaver has passed all the hurdles and is expected to start on Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/27/2013 10:23:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is an ugly 1-for-19 (.053) in his matchups with Dodgers starter Zack Greinke.
Insight: Hamilton has batted .262 over the past two weeks with four home runs, certainly an improvement on his season average of .223, but this mathcup should be avoided.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/26/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton slammed a home run in the seventh inning on Sunday, his third long ball in his last six games.
Insight: It's probably not a coincidence that the Angels' winning streak is happening at the same time as Hamilton's hitting has improved. Heading into Sunday's game he was batting .278 with a 1.131 OPS over the past week.
Billy Buckner, SP5/25/2013 7:52:00 PM
Description: Billy Buckner threw five scoreless innings Saturday in his Angels debut.
Insight: He exited after 74 pitches. Buckner could be headed back to the minors, especially with Jered Weaver set to come off the disabled list sometime in the next week.
Jered Weaver, SP5/25/2013 3:25:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles righthander Jered Weaver is on track to start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Insight: Weaver has been out almost two months with a broken elbow. Joe Blanton (1-7, 6.19 ERA) will probably move to the bullpen when Weaver returns.
Mark Trumbo, DH5/25/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles Angels DH Mark Trumbo will be tested by Jeremy Guthrie as he's hitless in six at-bats versus the Royals starter.
Insight: Trumbo is batting .381 over his past five games and has 11 home runs this season to put him among the league leaders. This matchup, however, is not favorable.
Tommy Hanson, SP5/24/2013 7:56:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson (personal) is scheduled to throw 75 pitches Saturday in an extended spring training game, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Hanson hasn't started since May 4 due to the death of his step-brother. He has been building up his stamina in extended spring training and likely will need one more start after Saturday.
Peter Bourjos, CF5/24/2013 7:52:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos (hamstring) has started light jogging and taking batting practice this week, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Bourjos has been sidelined since late April with a strained left hamstring. Since his game is based heavily on speed, he should make sure he is 100 percent healthy before returning.
Tommy Hanson, SP5/23/2013 8:26:00 PM
Description: Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register says that it "could be weeks" before Tommy Hanson rejoins the Angels rotation.
Insight: Hanson hasn't started since May 4 due to the death of his step-brother. He has been building up his stamina in extended spring training.
Jered Weaver, SP5/23/2013 6:49:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jered Weaver (left elbow) will rejoin the rotation next week if his bullpen session this weekend goes well, manager Mike Scioscia said. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register.
Insight: Weaver suffered a fractured non-throwing elbow on April 7, but that is healed and the right-hander has been building up his arm for a comeback. He won't need a minor league rehab start.

Description: Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson snapped a three-game skid by notching his fourth win of the year Wednesday against the Mariners.

Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson is working out in extended spring training and is unlikely to start Saturday, according to Bill Shaikin of the LA Times.
Insight: Hanson hasn't started since May 4 due to a death in his family. The right-hander should be able to return next week.
Jered Weaver, SP5/21/2013 8:51:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jered Weaver (left elbow) could be activated after his extended spring training appearance Wednesday, manager Mike Scioscia said. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: Weaver suffered a fractured non-throwing elbow on April 7, but that is healed and Weaver has been building up his arm for a comeback.
Albert Pujols, 1B5/21/2013 10:12:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is a career .311 hitter with five home runs in 74 at-bats versus Seattle right-hander Aaron Harang.
Insight: Pujols and Harang faced each other a lot when they both played in the NL Central division. Hopefully, the favorable matchup will get Pujols' production headed in an upward direction.
Jason Vargas, SPHot5/19/2013 8:49:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles lefthander Jason Vargas fired seven shutout frames Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Vargas got off to a rocky start this season (0-3, 4.85 ERA in his first five starts) but he's really turned things around in his last four outings. Over that span, he's gone 3-0 with 23 strikeouts and a 2.74 ERA.
Albert Pujols, 1B5/19/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols has good numbers in his career against White Sox starter Jake Peavy, who will face the Angels Sunday.
Insight: Pujols has gone 8-for-23 (.348) with two homers and eight RBI against Peavy. Plagued by knee and foot injuries, Pujols is batting just .247 with seven homers, 25 RBI and a 24/19 K/BB this season. However, at this same point last year (190 plate appearances), he was hitting .213 with four home runs and a 23/11 K/BB.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/19/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton has been dealing with an undisclosed illness for the last few weeks and missed Saturday's game, but he has a solid matchup Sunday if he can get in the lineup.
Insight: Hamilton entered the game in right field in the seventh inning Saturday and ended up going 1-for-1 with a walk in his two plate appearances. The free-swinger is batting just .214 with five homers and 48 strikeouts in 168 at-bats, but he'll get White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy Sunday. Hamilton is 7-for-15 (.467) with two homers against Peavy.
Alberto Callaspo, 3B5/18/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Angels third baseman Alberto Callaspo went 2-for-3 with a homer and five RBI Saturday in a high-scoring game against the White Sox.
Insight: The teams scored a combined 21 runs and had 29 hits. With little power, little speed and a mediocre batting average, Callaspo once again has been a bad fantasy option, even for AL-only owners.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/18/2013 3:22:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is not in Saturday's starting lineup. No word on any new injury, but he has been dealing with illness for a while.
Insight: Hamilton (.210, 5 HR, 12 RBI) went 0-for-4 on Friday night, ending a modest four-game hitting streak. mark trumbo will get the start in right field.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/17/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is a career 1-for-8 against White Sox left-hander Chris Sale with a pair of strikeouts and a .325 OPS.
Insight: Hamilton (.215, 5 HR, 12 RBI) has a modest four-game hitting streak, but in last week's series against Chicago he went 1-for-12 so the White Sox know how to pitch him. Avoid this matchup.
Mike Trout, CFHot5/16/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout has homered in two straight games and three of his last five.
Insight: Trout has turned it on over his last 15 games, batting .368 with six homers, 17 RBI, three steals, 13 runs and an 8/7 K/BB. His overall numbers are still a bit disappointing, but the buy-low window is closing quickly.
Ryan Madson, RP5/15/2013 9:01:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) will report to his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake Thursday. He said it will last "several weeks," according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Madson is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and has had several minor setbacks since spring training. Ernesto Frieri will likely hold onto the closer role even after Madson returns, but the right-hander eventually could return to the ninth inning.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/15/2013 1:17:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is a career 4-for-4 against Royals right-hander Wade Davis with three extra base hits and a 3.050 OPS.
Insight: Hamilton homered on Tuesday night, but has struggled for most of the season. He's been a little better of late, hitting .273 with a pair of homers over the past seven days, but fantasy owners and Angels fans are still waiting for the hitting star from Texas to arrive in Anaheim.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/14/2013 2:25:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton left Monday night's 11-4 loss to Kansas City in the sixth inning not because of the blowout, but because he was sick and has been for the past 10 days to two weeks, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
Insight: Unfortunately it doesn't explain his hitting this season as he's actually hit for a higher average (.233) and OPS (.748) over the time he was sick than before the illness. The Angels' offense desperately needs Hamilton and Albert Pujols to produce if they want to get back into the pennant race.
Ryan Madson, RP5/14/2013 12:17:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) pitched a spotless ninth innings at High-A Inland Empire and could be with the Angels by the end of the week.
Insight: Ernesto Frieri is likely to hold onto the closer role, at least initially, but if Madson pitches as we know he can, he'll likely take over the back end at some point this season.
Erick Aybar, SS5/14/2013 11:31:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said shortstop Erick Aybar would be back Tuesday, but fantasy owners should hold off installing him back in lineups one more day.
Insight: Aybar is 2-for-21 (.095) against Tuesday's starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Erick Aybar, SS5/13/2013 7:41:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar won't be on the field Monday against Kansas City.
Insight: He's battling a sore hamstring. Brendan Harris (.260, 3 HR, 6 RBI) will get the start in his place.
Peter Bourjos, CF5/13/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos' latest timetable for return from his hamstring injury is the end of May or beginning of June.
Insight: When to return is always a tough question for a speed guy like Bourjos because it's very easy to re-injury himself. Unfortunately, the struggling Angels need him in the lineup. He was batting .313 with six extra base hits and an .827 OPS over his first 22 games.
Erick Aybar, SS5/13/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar (hamstring) is questionable for Monday's game against Kansas City.
Insight: Aybar (.273, 0 HR, 2 RBI) left last Thursday's game with a right hamstring injury. The team will test the hamstring in the pre-game warmup before making a final determination.
Erick Aybar, SS5/10/2013 7:42:00 PM
Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar (hamstring) isn't expected to go on the DL, according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.
Insight: Aybar left Thursday's game with a right hamstring injury. He's day-to-day and is likely to sit out a few games.
Tommy Hanson, SP5/10/2013 5:42:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Tommy Hanson has been placed on the restricted list after a death in his family.
Insight: Hanson will miss Friday's start against the White Sox. Barry Enright will take the ball instead.
Josh Hamilton, RF5/10/2013 9:44:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton homered for the second consecutive day, to bring his season total to a still disappointing four.
Insight: Unfortunately for the five-time All-Star, the Angels have completed their series with the hapless Houston Astros pitching staff. We will watch intently to see if he can carry this streak through the series with the Chicago White Sox, a team he has always hit well (.lifetime .346 hitter with a 1.012 OPS).
Scott Downs, RP5/10/2013 9:36:00 AM
Description: Angels reliever Scott Downs injured his right foot in Thursday's game and is not expected to be available for Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Downs isn't much of a fantasy value unless holds are a category. He's 0-2 with a 2.92 ERA and 1.54 WHIP.
Erick Aybar, SS5/10/2013 9:29:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar, who left Thursday's game with tightness in his right hamstring, is doubtful for Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Aybar was playing in his ninth game since returning from a heel injury. It appears the injury won't force him on the disabled list, but could cost him a couple of days. Brendan Harris should handle shortstop duties and he went 2-for-3 with a home run on Thursday night.
Erick Aybar, SS5/9/2013 9:59:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar left Thursday's game with tightness in his right hamstring, according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.

Jered Weaver, SP5/9/2013 7:21:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jered Weaver (left elbow) threw his first bullpen session Thursday since suffering a fractured left elbow and said it went well, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Weaver suffered the injury on April 7. He'll need 4-5 bullpen sessions before he can start a minor league rehab assignment.
Ryan Madson, RP5/8/2013 6:31:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) could be activated from the DL by next week, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Madson will face hitters in extended spring training games on Thursday and Saturday and in minor league games next Monday and Wednesday. Ernesto Frieri is likely to hold onto the closer role at least initially.
Albert Pujols, 1BCold5/8/2013 11:02:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols has rarely been successful against Houston right-hander Bud Norris, going 5-for-27 (.185) without a home run over his career.
Insight: Not many pitchers hold that kind of advantage on this future Hall of Fame first baseman. Add in that Pujols is struggling (.231 with a .714 OPS) and you have a candidate for the night off.
Jered Weaver, SP5/7/2013 7:40:00 PM
Description: Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Jered Weaver (left elbow) is more than two weeks away from rejoining the rotation, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Weaver suffered a left (non-throwing) elbow fracture on April 7 and is expected to throw his first bullpen session since the injury on Thursday. He'll need to ramp up his innings in extended spring training before he can start a minor league rehab assignment.
Ryan Madson, RP5/7/2013 7:38:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) will face live hitters Thursday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Madson's bullpen Tuesday went well and he could be activated about a week from Thursday. He's unlikely to regain the closer job in his first few appearances.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold5/7/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Angels struggling outfielder Josh Hamilton gets a good matchup on Tuesday. He's 4-for-7 with a home run and a 1.556 OPS against Houston starter Jordan Lyles.
Insight: The five-time All-Star batting just .208 with two homers, nine RBI and an ugly .551 OPS. Other than this favorable matchup, the only good news for Hamilton owners is that April is historically his worst month at the plate with career lows in batting average (.289) and OPS (.861).
Ryan Madson, RP5/5/2013 4:46:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) could begin a rehab assignment this week, according to Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times.
Insight: Madson threw his first bullpen session Saturday since having a minor procedure to remove scar tissue last week. The Angels were waiting to see how he would respond from the session, and it looks like he didn't have any issues. Madson could take the closer role from Ernesto Frieri soon after returning. Frieri has a 2.03 ERA, but he has walked 11 batters in 13 1/3 innings.
Albert Pujols, 1BCold5/5/2013 12:38:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is not in Sunday's lineup.
Insight: Pujols has two two-homer games, but has been held homerless in his other 28 games. He's hitting .237 overall and is 9-for-59 (.153) with 12 strikeouts over his last 14 games.
Ryan Madson, RP5/5/2013 11:57:00 AM

Insight: Madson had to have a minor procedure to remove scar tissue from his right elbow last week after feeling pain following his last bullpen session. The important thing for the Angels will be seeing how he responds Sunday.
Mark Trumbo, DHHot5/4/2013 8:54:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles DH Mark Trumbo has homered in five of the last six games.
Insight: Trumbo ripped 21 homers in a span of 46 games from May 27 to July 20 last year, so we know what he can do when he's hot. However, fantasy owners shouldn't be fooled by his .295 average when he has 33 strikeouts. He hit .306 with 65 strikeouts in 288 at-bats in the first half last season, but finished the season with a .268 average.
Jered Weaver, SP5/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Description: Angels ace Jered Weaver (left elbow) is expected to throw off a mound for the first time next week, according to Angels beat writer Alden Gonzalez.
Insight: Weaver suffered a left (non-throwing) elbow fracture on April 7 and was expected to be out until at least mid-May. The Angels' pitching staff is off to a horrible start yielding 5.10 rpg over the first 29 games. Only Houston (5.73) and Toronto (5.13) are giving up more runs per game.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold5/4/2013 1:42:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is not in Saturday's starting lineup. Mark Trumbo will start in right field.
Insight: No injury that we know of. Like Albert Pujols last season, Hamilton is struggling in his first season wearing an Angels uniform. He's batting just .216 with two homers, nine RBI and an ugly .562 OPS.
Alberto Callaspo, 3B5/3/2013 7:48:00 PM
Description: Alberto Callaspo has recovered from his calf injury and will start at third base Friday against the Orioles.
Insight: He'll hit seventh for the struggling Angels. Callaspo has never gotten a hit against Baltimore righthander Miguel Gonzalez (0-for-3).
Ryan Madson, RP5/3/2013 10:52:00 AM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) had surgery to remove scar tissue from his elbow this week, according to Angels.mlb.com.
Insight: Scar tissue usually tears off while a pitcher is throwing and rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but that didn't happen for Madson and the tissue had to be manually removed. He has had several setbacks in his recovery, including feeling tightness after a simulated game two weeks ago. We'd be surprised if he returns before May ends.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold5/1/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is 5-for-11 versus Oakland starter Tommy Milone with a homer and a 1.235 OPS.
Insight: Like Albert Pujols last season, Hamilton is struggling in his first season wearing an Angels uniform. He's batting just .204 with two homers, nine RBI and an ugly .548 OPS. This has been a favorable matchup for Hamilton and might help get him started in the right direction.
Albert Pujols, 1B5/1/2013 9:51:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is a career .636 hitter (7-for-11) with six doubles and a 1.818 OPS against Oakland left-hander Tommy Milone.
Insight: He's off to another slow start this season, thought better than 2012 when he hit just .217 with no home runs in the month of April. this time he's batting .252 with four homers and 17 RBI. Perhaps this matchup will get things going.
Erick Aybar, SS4/30/2013 5:00:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar (heel) has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: Aybar hasn't played since April 9 due to a bruised left heel. he was hitting .321 at the time. he might take over the leadoff spot for Peter Bourjos, who was placed on the disabled list Tuesday morning.
Peter Bourjos, CF4/30/2013 11:48:00 AM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining his left hamstring in Monday night's game with Oakland.
Insight: He had raised his average from .220 to .313 and was producing solid fantasy numbers as the Angels leadoff hitter.
Mark Trumbo, DH4/30/2013 11:06:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles DH Mark Trumbo is a career .100 hitter against A's pitcher Jarrod Parker with five strikeouts in 10 at-bats.
Insight: Trumbo has a hot bat, hitting .302 with four homers, including one on Monday night, and an .841 OPS. This matchup, however isn't a good one.
Josh Hamilton, RFCold4/30/2013 11:01:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is hitless in 10 career at-bats versus Oakland starter Jarrod Parker with seven strikeouts.
Insight: Hamilton struggled in Monday's 19-inning marathon going 0-for-8 so this would be an excellent opportunity to rest the slugger. He's batting .202 this season with two home runs and nine RBI. Avoid this matchup.
Jason Vargas, SP4/28/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Jason Vargas tossed a complete game Sunday in a 2-0 loss to his former team the Seattle Mariners.
Insight: Behind a 2.74 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP at Safeco Field, Vargas posted a 3.85 ERA and 1.18 WHIP overall last year for the Mariners. He was back at Safeco Field on Sunday and had his best start of the season. However, his ERA is still in the high-fours.
Tommy Hanson, SP4/28/2013 2:44:00 PM
Description: Angels righthander Tommy Hanson has returned from bereavement leave and will get the start on Monday against the hard-hitting Oakland A's (5.16 rpg).
Insight: Hanson hasn't been sharp this season despite a 2-1 record. He owns a 4.24 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with just eight strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. It might be a good idea to let him sit on your bench for the first start back.
Kevin Frandsen, 3B4/28/2013 11:35:00 AM
Description: Phillies infielder Kevin Frandsen will get a start at first base on Sunday against Jonathan Niese and the Mets.
Insight: Ryan Howard has been hitting the ball well, but is 1-for-15 lifetime against Niese. Frandsen only has 17 at-bats this season, but is batting .294 with four runs scored and four RBI.
Mike Trout, CF4/28/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout is 2-for-12 (.167), both singles, against Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: Trout has a hit in the first three games of the series, but hasn't posted a multi-hit game since last Sunday and is averaging just .274 with a .785 OPS. It's not yet time to talk about a "sophomore jinx" but fantasy owners who selected him in the top-three overall on Draft Day aren't happy.
Josh Hamilton, RF4/27/2013 10:07:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is a career .167 hitter against Seattle starter Felix Hernandez with an ugly .611 OPS which includes 16 strikeouts in 48 at-bats.
Insight: Hamilton has a modest five-game hitting streak, but hasn't homered since April 14 and has only taken Hernandez deep once in his career.
Mike Trout, CF4/27/2013 10:04:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout is 10-for-24 (.417) with a home run and eight RBI against Seattle's ace right-hander Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Trout is just 2-for-7 in the first two games of the series with the Mariners and hitless in the three games before that, but this favorable matchup to too good to resist.
Albert Pujols, 1B4/26/2013 12:06:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is a career .315 hitter (23-for-73) with five homers against Seattle starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Plantar fasciitis had limited the slugger to DH duty for the past week and a half, but he played first base on Thursday and this could be a sign that his foot is starting to feel better.
Albert Pujols, 1B4/25/2013 8:03:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols is going to do something he hasn't done in a while Thursday night against Seattle. He's actually going to start at first base.
Insight: Plantar fasciitis has limited the slugger to DH duty for the past week and a half. This could be a sign that his foot is starting to feel better though that would contradict what Pujols (.267, 2 HR, 11 RBI) said earlier in the week.
Erick Aybar, SS4/24/2013 7:02:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar (heel) will begin playing in extended spring training games Thursday and could be activated from the DL this weekend. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register

Mark Trumbo, DH4/24/2013 10:12:00 AM
Description: Los Angeles DH Mark Trumbo is a career .167 hitter versus Texas starter Yu Darvish with six strikeouts and a .472 OPS.
Insight: Trumbo is rolling right now. He's had five multi-hit games in his last seven outings to raise his average from .279 to .316. However, he's not hitting the long ball and that isn't likely to turn around against Darvish. Sit him.
Howie Kendrick, 2B4/24/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick, who hit a pair of homers on Tuesday night, is likely to come back to reality on Wednesday facing Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish. He's hitless in 12 career at-bats versus Darvish with five strikeouts.
Insight: Kendrick, a perennial fantasy disappointment, is off to a solid start batting .297 with three homers, 14 RBI, a couple of stolen bases and an .810 OPS. He's on a modest five-game hitting streak. The Wednesday matchup, however, is an unfavorable one.
Erick Aybar, SS4/23/2013 8:47:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar (heel) will not make his return to action Thursday. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register
Insight: Aybar was hoping to return when he is first eligible but he'll play some extended spring training games first. Andrew Romine (.077, 0 HR, 1 RBI) and Brendan Harris (.308, 1 HR, 4 RBI) have been splitting time at shortstop in Aybar's absence.
Erick Aybar, SS4/22/2013 8:56:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles shortstop Erick Aybar is expected to make his return from a heel injury Thursday against Seattle. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register
Insight: That will be the first day he is eligible to come off the disabled list. Andrew Romine (.077, 0 HR, 1 RBI) and Brendan Harris (.308, 1 HR, 4 RBI) have been splitting time at shortstop in Aybar's absence.
Tommy Hanson, SP4/22/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: Alden Gonzalez from MLB.com is reporting that Angels righthander Tommy Hanson has been placed on the bereavement list.
Insight: That means someone else will have to fill in for him Wednesday against Texas. Jerome Williams (1-0, 3.18 ERA) is the most likely candidate to make a spot start.
Mike Trout, CFHot4/22/2013 10:22:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout is 6-for-17 (.353) with a pair of homers against Rangers left-hander Derek Holland.
Insight: Trout has raised his average 80 points over the past seven games, to .307, and those fantasy owners who were worried about his slow start are smiling. The hot hitter is a must-start in this favorable matchup.
Albert Pujols, 1B4/22/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is a career .400 hitter versus Texas starter Derek Holland with a pair of homers and a 1.371 OPS.
Insight: Pujols is dealing with a painful bout of plantar fasciitis and will be relegated to DH for an extended period of time. His bat still works, however, as he's on a five-game hitting streak over that span (8-for-22). Play him while you can as he could end up being on the disabled list if his foot doesn't improve soon.
Mark Trumbo, DHHot4/21/2013 8:14:00 PM
Description: Los Angeles DH Mark Trumbo ended Sunday's marathon against the Tigers by hammering a 13th inning walkoff homer.

Albert Pujols, 1B4/21/2013 4:12:00 PM
Description: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is dealing with a painful bout of plantar fasciitis and will be relegated to DH for an extended period of time. SOURCE: LATimes.com
Insight: Pujols started at DH for the fourth straight game Sunday. "I'm dying," Pujols said. "It's hurting real bad." Pujols will receive treatment and continue to play until he cannot tolerate the discomfort. The injury hasn't hurt his production, as he came into Sunday's game batting .322 with two homers, 11 RBIs and a .939 OPS.
Jered Weaver, SP4/21/2013 2:38:00 PM
Description: Angels ace Jered Weaver (left elbow) plans to throw Wednesday for the first time since his injury. SOURCE: Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com
Insight: Weaver suffered a left (non-throwing) elbow fracture on April 7 and is expected to be out until at least mid-May.
Garrett Richards, SP4/20/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: Angels starter Garrett Richards tossed seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball Saturday against the Tigers. He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.
Insight: The hard-throwing Richards hasn't been a big strikeout pitcher since moving up from Class A, and he has a BB/9 over four since his first year at Triple-A in 2012. He'll remain in the rotation as long as Jered Weaver is out, but we'll need to see him do this again before we endorse him in fantasy leagues.
Peter Bourjos, CF4/20/2013 8:39:00 PM
Description: Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos is 6-for-8 with four RBIs and three runs over his last two games.
Insight: He has raised his average from .220 to .306 in the process. Bourjos has hit leadoff over the past six games, a spot that is great for his fantasy value.
Mike Trout, CFHot4/20/2013 8:36:00 PM
Description: Angels outfielder Mike Trout went 2-for-5 with a grand slam Saturday against the Tigers.
Insight: Trout had a .227 average on April 12 but he has collected 11 hits, including four doubles and two homers, 10 RBIs and seven runs in his last six games. The only thing we haven't seen yet is the stolen bases -- he was successful on his one attempt this year.
Ryan Madson, RP4/20/2013 6:15:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ryan Madson (elbow) felt soreness after throwing a simulated game Friday, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: Madson was targeting the end of this month for a return to action from Tommy John surgery, but this will set him back at least a few weeks. Ernesto Frieri should be owned in all leagues.
Josh Hamilton, RF4/20/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton has faced Detroit starter Rick Porcello 10 times in his career and has hit a pair of homers with seven RBI.
Insight: After hitting a pair of homers over the weekend, Hamilton has gone 1-for-13 over his last three games, but this matchup could get him going again.
Alberto Callaspo, 3B4/19/2013 7:11:00 PM
Description: The Angels have finally gone ahead and placed third baseman Alberto Callaspo on the DL.
Insight: Callaspo has been battling calf tightness for over a week so the move will be retroactive to April 11th. He'll be eligible to return on the 26th, though it's unclear if that's a realistic timetable.
Josh Hamilton, RF4/19/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton has faced Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez six times in his career and he's produced four hits, all singles and a pair of walks.
