Description: The Panthers have signed forward Alex Kovalev to a one-year, $1 million contract.
Insight: Kovalev played in the KHL last season. The 39-year-old scored 16 goals with 34 points in his last NHL season but hasn't had much fantasy value since 2008-09.

Description: In an interview with a Russian publication, Alexei Kovalev criticized former Senators coach Cory Clouston and local reporters for his two seasons in Ottawa. TSN
Insight: Kovalev claimed that Clouston did not treat some players kindly, and he also claimed that Ottawa sports reporters "don't watch hockey at all." Kovalev claimed that two NHL teams offered him a contract, but he has decided to return to Russia to play in the KHL. Even if he returned to the NHL, Kovalev wouldn't be a player you'd want on your fantasy team.

Description: According to Russian website Sports Express, Alexei Kovalev is about to sign a two-year contract with Atlant Mytishchi of the KHL. TSN

Description: Penguins GM Ray Shero said that he does not plan to re-sign forwards Alexei Kovalev and Mike Comrie. TSN
Insight: The 38-year-old Kovalev scored just two goals and five assists in 20 games since being acquired by the Penguins from Ottawa. Comrie, who missed most of last season because of hip surgery, scored just one goal and five assists in 21 games last season. Both players will be hard-pressed to find work with another NHL team during the coming season.

Description: Kovalev, who played for Pittsburgh from 1998 into the 2002-2003 season, landed with the Penguins once again Thursday.
Insight: The veteran finished two of the past four seasons with just 18 goals but should certainly surpass that this year with 14 through 54 games. He also brings 13 assists and a minus-9 rating. (
2/24/2011 1:09:00 PM
Description: The Ottawa Senators have traded Alexei Kovalev to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a seventh-round pick. TSN
Insight: For that price, it was pretty clear that the Senators were trying to give away the enigmatic Kovalev and his salary. Kovalev didn't seem to be a good fit with the Sens and coach Cory Clouston, and his numbers (54 GP, 27 PTS, -9) were unappealing as far as fantasy goes. Kovalev, who is celebrating his 38th birthday with this trade, may see a slight increase in value under the Pens' system and enthusiastic coach Dan Bylsma.
2/12/2011 8:23:00 PM
Description: Alex Kovalev scored two goals and added an assist in the Senators' 5-3 win over Edmonton on Saturday afternoon. TSN
Insight: Kovalev also scored three points four games before in a loss to Detroit. His goals were the difference for the Senators, who snapped an 11-game winless streak. Kovalev is a struggling player on a struggling team, so he is not someone you want on your fantasy roster.
1/21/2011 12:40:00 PM
Description: Alexei Kovalev is expected to return to the Senators' lineup for Friday's game against Montreal. TSN

Description: Alexei Kovalev will miss at least one week because of a knee injury. Ottawa Citizen
Insight: The Senators will recall a player from Binghamton of the AHL to take Kovalev's spot in the lineup. Kovalev won't be on a lot of fantasy rosters based on his lack of production during his time in Ottawa.
12/24/2010 9:05:00 AM
Description: Kovalev scored his eighth goal of the season on Thursday night against Nashville.
Insight: Kovalev now has 17 points in 36 games so far this season for the Senators. (
12/10/2010 3:05:00 PM
Description: Alexei Kovalev believes he is being singled out by Senators' coach Cory Clouston for the team's recent struggles. TSN
Insight: Kovalev was recently demoted to the Sens' fourth line and had less than ten minutes of icetime during Thursday's game. Kovalev has been held without a point in his previous six games. With 14 points (7g-7a) and a (-7) in 30 games, he shouldn't be anywhere near your fantasy roster.
11/28/2010 8:02:00 AM
Description: Kovalev scored a goal and added two assists on Saturday against the Leafs.
Insight: Kovalev now has two goals and three assists over his last four games. He has seven goals and seven assists on the year. (
11/23/2010 12:11:00 AM
Description: Alex Kovalev scored a power-play goal and added an assist in the Senators' 3-2 win over Los Angeles on Monday. TSN
Insight: The goal was Kovalev's 1000th point of his career. He became the 76th player in NHL history to reach 1000 points and the second Senator to do so this season (Daniel Alfredsson also reached 1000 this season). Kovalev is not having his best season with 11 points (6g-5a) in 21 games.
11/7/2010 1:04:00 AM
Description: After going three games without a score, Kovalev notched two goals Saturday night to help lead his team over Montreal.

11/7/2010 12:39:00 AM
Description: Alexei Kovalev scored two goals in the Senators' 3-2 win over Montreal on Saturday. TSN
Insight: Kovalev, who was booed by his former fans, is now three points short of 1,000 career points. He has five goals this season, although he has found the net in only three of his 14 games this season. Kovalev was also held pointless in his previous three games, which is yet another pointless streak for him.
10/27/2010 12:53:00 AM
Description: Alex Kovalev scored two goals and added an assist with a +2 in the Senators' 5-2 win over Phoenix on Tuesday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: Kovalev and Erik Karlsson combined for the fastest two goals in Sens' history, scoring nine seconds apart in the first period. Kovalev has been flat out awful this season, with just a single assist in his previous eight games. Don't add him to your team just based on this game.
10/21/2010 1:40:00 PM
Description: Alexei Kovalev has been criticized by Senators GM Bryan Murray for his lack of scoring. TSN
Insight: The Sens' GM described Kovalev's play as "not very good" this season. He might be onto something, as Kovy has just one assist in six games this season. Murray admitted that offseason surgery may be slowing the Russian sniper. However, Kovalev has been dropped to the fourth line, so your best bet may be to look for another option for your fantasy team.
8/31/2010 12:15:00 AM
Description: Alexei Kovalev has resumed skating after offseason ACL surgery and should be ready for the start of training camp. Sportsnet
Insight: Kovalev missed the playoffs after injuring his knee during the Sens' second-last game of the season. He will attempt to rebound after a disappointing first season with the Senators (18 goals and 49 points). The addition of Sergei Gonchar could help Kovalev's power-play numbers, which were far superior in Montreal.
