Canadiens sack Cunneyworth, Ladouceur

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - The Montreal Canadiens have fired assistant coaches Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur.

The announcement came from general manager Marc Bergevin on Wednesday, one

day after the re-hiring of Michel Therrien as the Habs' head coach.

"Following my appointment as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, I made the decision of bringing together a new coaching staff. Out of respect for Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur, I felt it was important that I notify them immediately in order for them to start looking for other opportunities without further delay," Therrien said in a statement. "On behalf of the organization, I would like to thank both of them for their valuable contribution to the team and wish them the very best for the future."

Cunneyworth had been under scrutiny ever since he was tabbed as interim head coach on December 17, taking over for the fired Jacques Martin. His status as an English speaker in a bilingual culture hindered his efforts, and an 18-23-9 mark at the helm didn't aid his cause, either.

Ladouceur spent one season with Montreal as an assistant, following his promotion from Hamilton of the American Hockey League at the end of the 2010-11 campaign.
