Description: The Yankees have placed Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow soreness, according to
Insight: Tanaka has allowed nine runs on 19 hits and struck out eight in his last 13 2/3 innings. With CC Sabathia likely done for the season, Ivan Nova recovering from Tommy John surgery and Michael Pineda out indefinitely, the Yankees cannot afford to lose Tanaka for an extended period of time. He traveled to New York to have an MRI and the Yankees are waiting for the results.

Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka threw a complete game against the Red Sox Saturday night, but he took the loss after allowing a go-ahead solo homer to Mike Napoli in the top of the ninth.
Insight: Napoli hit a pitch into the first row in right-center field to put Boston ahead 2-1. Tanaka has been dominant this year, but home runs have been somewhat of an issue. In 106 2/3 innings, he's allowed 13 of them (1.1 HR/9) but 11 were solo shots.

Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka produced another memorable outing Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: In eight innings, Tanaka (8-1, 2.06 ERA) allowed just four hits and one run (it was unearned), striking out nine while surrendering two walks. The rookie from Japan hasn't let up more than three earned runs in any of his 11 starts this season and looks to be a legitimate Cy Young contender. We'll see him pitch again Thursday against Oakland.
5/21/2014 9:19:00 AM
Description: New York right-hander Masahiro Tanaka dropped his first decision in almost two years Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: That breaks up a string of 42 consecutive starts without a loss. Tanaka wasn't awful (6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 7 K's, 1 BB) but he wasn't sharp either. He'll look to rebound Sunday against the White Sox.
Hot5/14/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka threw his first career shutout Wednesday against the Mets.
Insight: New York's pitching staff was crushed for 21 runs the past two games and currently has CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova on the DL, but Tanaka stepped up like a true ace to stop the bleeding. He allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked none to improve to 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. His K/BB this season is 66/7 in 58 innings.

Insight: The 25-year-old went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA and 183 strikeouts in 212 innings for Tohoku Rakuten last season, but the Yankees will probably be satisfied if he duplicates the 3.90 ERA Yu Darvish put up as a rookie in 2012.

Description: Apparently, Masahiro Tanaka's wife would prefer that he sign with a West Coast team. SOURCE: David Waldstein, New York Times

Description: USA Today's Bob Nightengale published two conflicting reports on Friday. His first report said the Dodgers were planning to "go all-out" for free agent starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, though hours later he said that L.A. was not going to "spend wildly" in their pursuit of Tanaka.
Insight: So which is it, Bob? Probably a little of both. The Dodgers clearly want Tanaka (Who wouldn't? He was undefeated in Japan last season.) but if the bidding gets too high, they may walk away and instead focus on signing Clayton Kershaw to a long-term contract. John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle says that Tanaka would prefer to play for a team in a big market like the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Angels or Dodgers.

Description: Teams have until January 24th to sign Japanese starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. The righthanded ace was posted by Rakuten of the Japanese Pacific League on Tuesday night.
Insight: Tanaka was ranked third in this year's free agent class by ESPN insider Keith Law. The 25-year-old was sensational in Japan last season, compiling a 24-0 record with a 1.27 ERA in 27 starts. He throws a low 90s fastball with a splitter ESPN's Jerry Crasnick described as reminiscent of Curt Schilling. The Yankees, Angels, Diamondbacks and Dodgers are considered the favorites to land Tanaka. Whoever signs him will have to pay Ratuken a $20 million posting fee.
