Description: Red Sox starter Joe Kelly threw five scoreless one-hit innings Friday against the Mariners, but he was removed after 88 pitches for precautionary reasons, according to Ian Browne of mlb.com.
Insight: No word yet on what Kelly is dealing with. The right-hander has a 4.09 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP and a 14/16 K/BB in 22 innings with Boston. He's always put a lot of men on base (career 1.39 WHIP), but he's not going to be able to work out of jams as often in the American League.

8/12/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Joe Kelly has posted a 2.08 ERA in two starts with the Red Sox.
Insight: However, he's walked seven batters while fanning six over 13 innings in those starts. Kelly has managed to post a career ERA in the low threes even though his career WHIP is close to 1.40. This year hasn't been much different (3.75 ERA, 1.38 WHIP).

7/31/2014 12:54:00 PM
Description: The Cardinals have traded Joe Kelly to the Red Sox along with Allen Craig in a deal for John Lackey.
Insight: Kelly has a 4.37 ERA this season and a 3.25 ERA in 266 career innings, but his WHIP is 1.38. He won't have fantasy value in the AL.

7/11/2014 4:06:00 PM
Description: Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly (hamstring) has been activated from the 60-day disabled list.
Insight: Kelly, who strained his left hamstring on April 16, will get the start Friday against Milwaukee. He's 1-1 this season with a 0.59 ERA and 1.239 WHIP in three starts.

6/23/2014 8:43:00 PM
Description: Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment Friday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Insight: Kelly strained his left hamstring on April 16. He'll try to get his pitch count up to 60 pitches Friday and will need at least one more rehab start after that. He could be ready to rejoin the rotation in the second week of July.

5/8/2014 3:18:00 PM
Description: Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Wednesday in an appearance on The Jim Edmonds and Tim McKernan Show on CBS Sports 920 that right-hander Joe Kelly hasn't made progress with his hamstring injury and could be out until June.
Insight: He strained his left hamstring on April 16. Tyler Lyons has made five appearances (three starts) since Kelly went down and is 0-2 with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. Jaime Garcia is due back soon and likely will take the fifth spot in the rotation from Lyons.

4/17/2014 7:49:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Joe Kelly has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: He strained his left hamstring pitching in Wednesday's game against Milwaukee. Tyler Lyons is expected to take over for Kelly (1-1, 0.59 ERA) in the starting rotation.

Insight: He's on his way back to St. Louis for further testing. We're already hearing Tyler Lyons (1-0, 4.50 ERA in two starts for Triple-A Memphis) could start in his place Monday versus New York.

4/16/2014 2:52:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Joe Kelly exited his start on Wednesday afternoon with left hamstring tightness, according to Jenifer Langosch of mlb.com.
Insight: Kelly suffered the injury while trying to beat out a bunt. He gave up one unearned run in four innings and has a 0.59 ERA through three starts.

4/5/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Cardinals fifth starter Joe Kelly worked around six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings to get a 6-1 win Saturday at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Working out of jams is nothing new for Kelly -- he posted a 3.08 ERA in the last two seasons despite carrying a 1.37 WHIP. Kelly doesn't strike out many batters and his high WHIP makes him a pitcher best left on the free agent wire in mixed leagues.

3/26/2014 4:31:00 PM
Description: Joe Kelly will begin the season as the Cardinals' fifth starter, according to Jenifer Langosch of mlb.com.
Insight: Kelly pitched worse than Carlos Martinez but manager Mike Matheny decided to keep Martinez as the team's setup man. In two MLB seasons, Kelly has allowed a lot of baserunners (1.37 WHIP) but still posted a 3.08 ERA over 231 innings, including a 2.69 mark in 124 innings last season. He'll hold the spot until Jaime Garcia returns from his shoulder injury in a couple months.

10/10/2013 3:17:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Joe Kelly will be on the mound for Friday's NLCS Game 1 against Los Angeles. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Kelly quietly put together one of the lowest ERAs in the National League this season (2.69 ERA in 37 appearances). He was handed a no-decision in his only start of the Division Series (5 1/3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 K's, 4 BB versus Pittsburgh in Game 3).

Hot8/17/2013 9:22:00 PM
Description: St. Louis righthander Joe Kelly held the Cubs scoreless in his six innings of work Saturday at Wrigley Field.
Insight: Kelly is heating up. Over his last six games, he's 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA in 34 1/3 innings. Look for him to stay hot Thursday against the Braves.

6/25/2013 9:54:00 PM
Description: Cardinals manager Mike Matheny named Joe Kelly the No. 5 starter on Sunday, but he won't make a start until July 6, according to Cardinals.mlb.com.
Insight: Kelly is taking Tyler Lyons' spot in the rotation. The team will skip the No. 5 starter's next turn in the rotation and have everyone else pitch on normal rest. Kelly made 24 appearances (16 starts) as a rookie last year and went 5-7 with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 107 innings. He has posted a 4.22 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP as a long reliever this season and can be ignored in most leagues.

6/27/2012 10:04:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Joe Kelly turned in a quality start Wednesday against Miami, his second straight.
Insight: Kelly has kept runners from scoring despite allowing 28 hits in 21 1/3 innings this season, as his 3.38 ERA indicates. He's walked just four batters in his first four big league starts, so he's worth a look against weak-hitting opponents but he'll likely struggle against a stronger offensive club.

6/8/2012 5:11:00 PM
Description: Cardinals starter Joe Kelly will make his major league debut Sunday against Cleveland in place of Jaime Garcia, according to B.J. Rains of Fox Sports Midwest.
Insight: Kelly is a former third-round draft pick who has put up a 2.86 ERA in 72 1/3 innings at Triple-A Memphis this season. If the right-hander can swing multiple starts in the majors, he would be someone to look at in NL-only leagues, as St. Louis hurlers have a history of succeeding regardless of pedigree or past success.
