Scanning the NFL Fantasy Waiver Wire

Kyle Orton has thrown for five touchdowns the last two weeks.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - We are in the middle of the "bye" season so pickups are a necessary evil to winning each week. Beware, the options are not exactly enticing.

Here are the best of what might be available:

QB, Kyle Orton, Chicago - Orton has thrown for five touchdowns the last two weeks, two against Tampa Bay and three in a Monday night win against Philadelphia. The best news, however, is that his opponent this week in Detroit. The Lions are yielding a league-worst 430 yards (222.7 via the pass) and 37.7 ppg.

QB, Gus Frerotte, Minnesota - Facing a New Orleans Saints' defense which is giving up 249.2 yards passing (29th of 32 teams), should allow Frerotte to hit some receivers, particularly Bernard Berrian. But at best, you are still looking at just 250 yards and one TD.

RB, T.J. Duckett, Seattle - Until Maurice Morris rejoins Julius Jones in the backfield, Duckett will be the short yardage, goal line back. It's a testament to how much fantasy owners like running backs that he is the "best available."

WR, Matt Jones, Jacksonville - Jones has been the model of consistency, catching six balls in Week 1 and five in Weeks 2 through Four. He's only gotten one TD, but with Denver in Week 6 and Cleveland, Cincinnati and Detroit after their bye week, Jones looks like he could be a solid contributor.

WR, Lance Moore, New Orleans - It's likely that someone, probably the owner who has Drew Brees or Marques Colston, already snapped Moore up and put him in his lineup, but if not, you should try to pick him up. He has seven catches in each of the last two games and against San Francisco posted 101 yards and two scores. He will continue to shine until Colston returns to the playing field.

WR, Steve Breaston, Arizona - He's become the No.3 option on a throwing Cardinals team, and depending on Anquan Boldin's health might be a great pick this week. He gets on the field enough to contribute during the "bye" week stretch, so you should pick him up if Jones or Moore are already gone.

TE, Zach Miller, Oakland - It's his bye week this Sunday, but it sure seems like he is JaMarcus Russell's favorite target. For those with a tight end bye week looming, he is a suitable replacement.

Carolina Defense - They're giving up only 17.5 ppg and this week play at home against a one-dimensional Kansas City team (16.2 ppg). Stop Larry Johnson and you will stop the Chiefs. I expect a big effort here.
