Calgary Flames Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Joey MacDonald, G4/25/2013 1:57:00 PM
Description: Calgary backup netminder Joey MacDonald will start Thursday's game against the St. Louis Blues.
Insight: MacDonald has won four of his last five starts and has a 2.80 GAA on the season.
Dennis Wideman, D4/23/2013 3:30:00 PM
Description: Calgary blue-liner Dennis Wideman is doubtful for Tuesday's game against Nashville with a broken finger.
Insight: Considering there are only a handful of games left in the regular season, this might be the last we see of Wideman (six goals, 16 assists) in 2012-2013.
Cory Sarich, D4/23/2013 3:28:00 PM
Description: Calgary defenseman Cory Sarich is probable for Tuesday's game against Nashville despite a broken nose suffered in a fight on Sunday.
Insight: With two points in 27 games and a minus -6 rating he has little or no fantasy value.
Steve Begin, C4/23/2013 3:25:00 PM
Description: Calgary center Steve Begin is doubtful for Tuesday's game against Nashville with a hand injury.
Insight: He missed the last two games, but posted two goals in the game before the injury. Too bad that is half his season's total. His eight points in 36 games leaves his fantasy value below most starting centers.
Curtis Glencross, LW4/21/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross (knee) will miss the rest of the season, according to the Calgary Sun.
Insight: Glencross suffered a knee injury Friday when he collided with Ducks defenseman Ben Lovejoy. The winger will finish with 15 goals and 26 points in 40 games.
Dennis Wideman, D4/19/2013 9:28:00 PM
Description: Calgary blue-liner Dennis Wideman is out with a broken finger. SOURCE: NHL.com
Insight: It's possible he could miss a handful of games. Considering there are only a handful of games left in the regular season, this might be the last we see of Wideman (six goals, 16 assists) in 2012-2013.
Steve Begin, C4/18/2013 10:43:00 AM
Description: Calgary center Steve Begin scored on both of his shot attempts Wednesday in a win over the Red Wings.
Insight: Those two goals account for half of Begin's scoring production this season. He's a reliable enough role player for the Flames but not somebody worth having on your fantasy team.
Matt Stajan, C4/16/2013 12:30:00 PM
Description: Calgary center Matt Stajan suffered an upper body injury last Monday's game, missed four games, and is doubtful for Wednesday's game against Detroit.
Insight: He's a decent low-end fantasy center with five goals and 18 assists along with a +5 rating - when he's on the ice.
Alex Tanguay, LW4/13/2013 7:10:00 PM
Description: According to the Calgary Herald, the Flames will be without left wing Alex Tanguay for the rest of the season. Tanguay injured his knee Friday night against Phoenix.
Insight: He's officially been diagnosed with a Grade 2 medial collateral sprain. Tanguay will finish the year with 11 goals and 16 assists in 40 games.
Matt Stajan, C4/12/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Calgary center Matt Stajan suffered an upper body injury in Monday's game which kept him out of Wednesday's game against Vancouver and he's still questionable for Friday's game against Phoenix.
Insight: He's a decent low-end fantasy center with five goals and 18 assists along with a +5 rating - when he's on the ice.
Jiri Hudler, RW4/12/2013 11:35:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler has missed the past two games with an upper body injury and is questionable for Friday's game against Phoenix.
Insight: Hudler has seven goals and 15 assists in 34 games this season, but an ugly -12 rating hurts his fantasy value.
Steve Begin, LW4/12/2013 11:32:00 AM
Description: Flames center Steve Begin suffered an injury on Wednesday and is listed as questionable for Friday's game against Phoenix.
Insight: Begin has little fantasy value with just six points in 32 games with 22 penalty minutes and just 27 shots. That's simply not enough for fantasy owners, even when healthy.
Matt Stajan, C4/10/2013 2:09:00 PM
Description: Calgary center Matt Stajan suffered an upper body injury in Monday's game and is questionable for Wednesday's game against Vancouver.
Insight: A step below star status, he's still a decent low-end fantasy center with five goals and 18 assists along with a +5 rating.
Jiri Hudler, RW4/10/2013 2:07:00 PM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler is questionable for Wednesday's game against Vancouver with an upper body injury.
Insight: Hudler has seven goals and 15 assists in 34 games this season, but an ugly -12 rating hurts his fantasy value.
Curtis Glencross, LW4/8/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross is questionable for Monday's game against Colorado with a leg injury.
Insight: Glencross has been a solid second-line player with 14 goals and nine assist on 82 shots in 34 games. A minus nine rating won't help his fantasy value. He's been a consistent goal scorer the past few seasons and that should continue as soon as he gets back into the lineup.
Tom Kostopoulos, RW4/6/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Devils winger Tom Kostopoulos is questionable for Saturday's game against Toronto after getting hurt during a fight with Matt Martin on Monday.
Insight: He missed Thursday's game and admitted that he was knocked unconscious during the fight which usually means concussion. Kosto is known more for his ability to chuck the knuckles than score and this season hasn't done much of either. His fantasy value is zero.
Matt Stajan, C4/4/2013 10:37:00 AM
Description: Calgary center Matt Stajan netted the Flames' only two goals Wednesday in an 8-2 loss to Edmonton.
Insight: While the Oilers have won five straight, the Flames have limped their way to three consecutive losses. Stajan has posted a disappointing -4 rating during Calgary's three-game slide, lowering his season plus/minus to +5.
Jarome Iginla, RW3/27/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: Flames winger Jarome Iginla will miss Wednesday's game as the team prepares to trade him, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN.
Insight: Iginla had at least 30 goals in each of the last 11 seasons but he started off with just one over his first 16 games this season and has nine goals and 22 points through 31 games. A trade is not imminent but the Flames are protecting their asset.
Joey MacDonald, G3/27/2013 7:16:00 PM
Description: Joey MacDonald will start in net for the Flames Wednesday against Colorado.
Insight: Miikka Kiprusoff is a trade candidate, so MacDonald (3-5-1, 2.98 GAA, .894 SV%) could be auditioning for the starting job.
David Moss, RW3/25/2013 1:35:00 PM
Description: Phoenix winger David Moss is questionable for Monday's game against Detroit with a lower body injury.
Insight: Moss has totaled 13 points in 29 games this season, not great, but an improvement over last season's production. He was once a 20-goal scorer, but no longer.
Jarome Iginla, RW3/21/2013 10:48:00 PM
Description: Flames winger Jarome Iginla scored his eighth goal of the season Thursday against Nashville.
Insight: Iginla had at least 30 goals in each of the last 11 seasons but he started off with just one over his first 16 games this season and just went six games without a goal prior to Thursday.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G3/21/2013 5:47:00 PM
Description: Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff will make his first start since March 15 on Thursday against the Predators.
Insight: Kiprusoff missed Calgary's last game due to the birth of his child. He has won two straight starts but still has a 3.27 GAA and .876 SV% on the year.
Scott Hannan, D3/19/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Nashville defenseman Scott Hannan is questionable for Tuesday's game against Columbus due to an upper body injury.
Insight: Hannan, with a -11 rating and one point in 29 games, has nothing in his game to excite fantasy owners, so this note is just for informational purposes.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G3/17/2013 4:49:00 PM
Description: Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff won't play Monday against the Stars due to the birth of his child.
Insight: Kiprusoff did not travel with the team to Dallas. Joey MacDonald is expected to get the start in net.
Curtis Glencross, LW3/13/2013 1:25:00 PM
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross, has missed two games in a row and is questionable for wedday's game against Detroit with an upper-body injury (thought to be a wrist injury), according to the Calgary Herald.
Insight: Glencross has been a solid second-line player with eight goals and five assist on 58 shots in 22 games. He's been a consistent goal scorer the past few seasons and that should continue as soon as he gets back into the lineup.
Curtis Glencross, LW3/11/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross, missed Saturday's game and is questionable for Monday's game against Los Angeles with an upper-body injury (thought to be a wrist injury), according to the Calgary Herald.
Insight: Glencross has been a solid second-line player with eight goals and five assist on 58 shots in 22 games. He's been a consistent goal scorer the past few seasons and that should continue as soon as he gets back into the lineup.
Sven Baertschi, LW3/11/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Sven Baertschi has been sent to the minors to get his confidence back, according to a Calgary Herald report.
Insight: Baertschi has all kinds of ability and is still the team's top prospect, but didn't play well in 10 games with the big club. He dealt with a number of injuries (concussion, hip) and just needs to get playing time which he wasn't getting in Calgary.
Curtis Glencross, LW3/10/2013 12:05:00 PM
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross missed Saturday's game with an upper-body injury, according to the Calgary Herald.
Insight: Glencross was caught on camera taping up his right wrist. He'll travel home Sunday for evaluation by team doctors.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G3/10/2013 10:07:00 AM
Description: Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff was pulled after allowing six goals in 48 minutes to the Kings Saturday night.
Insight: Kiprusoff has allowed 10 goals on just 46 shots over his last two games and has a 3.43 GAA on the season. He's been a major disappointment after winning 35 games with a 2.35 GAA last season.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G3/6/2013 2:50:00 PM
Description: Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to return from his sprained MCL on Wednesday, according to coach Bob Hartley.
Insight: Kiprusoff has played just seven games this season with a 2-3-2 record, 3.24 GAA and 0.870 save percentage. Not great, but he was excellent in 2011 and fantasy owners should expect him to return to that level of production (35-22-9, 2.35 GAA, .921 save percentage).
Mikael Backlund, C3/6/2013 9:33:00 AM
Description: Flames center Mikael Backlund, who suffered a sprained knee in mid-February, is back skating, though with a non-contact jersey.
Insight: Backlund had produced three goals, one assist and 19 shots in eight games this season. In his first four seasons, he's not been a viable fantasy option and we recommend waiting to see if he's productive when he returns.
Joey MacDonald, G2/20/2013 4:51:00 PM
Description: The Flames will turn to Joey MacDonald to start in net Wednesday against the Kings.
Insight: Leland Irving has been demoted to the minors, leaving MacDonald as the team's only goaltending option while Miikka Kiprusoff is still on injured reserve. MacDonald is 1-0 with a 3.11 GAA in two appearances this season and holds a career GAA of 3.04.
Daniel Taylor, G2/18/2013 2:58:00 PM
Description: Flames coach Bob Hartley will give Daniel Taylor his first NHL start Monday against Phoenix.
Insight: Joey MacDonald and Leland Irving had been playing in net while Miikka Kiprusoff was sidelined, but Irving was sent to the minors and Taylor will get his chance to show what he's got.
Dennis Wideman, D2/17/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman has picked up a point in three straight games and has seven in eight games this month.
Insight: Wideman is playing at a career-high pace in goals, points and shots in his first season with Calgary.
Joey MacDonald, G2/17/2013 3:14:00 PM
Description: Calgary Flames goaltender Joey MacDonald will start Sunday against the Dallas Stars
Insight: Leland Irving was demoted to the minors after giving up two goals in four minutes on Friday night. MacDonald replaced him and allowed three in 56 and has a career GAA of 3.04 so he isn't a good fantasy option.
Leland Irving, G2/13/2013 6:15:00 PM
Description: Flames netminder Leland Irving has been confirmed as the starter for Wednesday's game against Dallas.
Insight: Miikka Kiprusoff is dealing with a sprained MCL, leaving Irving to handle most of the goalie starts for the next week or so. Irving is coming off his best start of the season, a 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Monday.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G2/12/2013 3:08:00 PM
Description: Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff will miss at least two more weeks with a grade-2 sprain of his MCL, according to the Flames' official Twitter page.
Insight: That means another two weeks of starts for Leland Irving, who is 1-1-1 with a 2.62 GAA in four appearances this season.
Leland Irving, G2/9/2013 2:58:00 PM
Description: Flames backup netminder Leland Irving will draw another start Saturday at Vancouver.
Insight: Miikka Kiprusoff is dealing with a sprained MCL. Irving allowed three goals in 61 minutes in an overtime win over Columbus on Thursday, his first start of the season.
Mikael Backlund, C2/9/2013 10:52:00 AM
Description: Flames center Mikael Backlund suffered a sprained knee Thursday against the Blue Jackets and is now out for at least the next month.
Insight: Calgary placed the 23-year-old on injured reserve Friday to free up a roster spot. Backlund, who scored a goal in Thursday's 4-3 win at Columbus, has produced three goals and one assist in eight games this season.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G2/8/2013 9:48:00 PM
Description: Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff has been put on injured reserve.
Insight: He suffered a lower-body injury earlier in the week. Kiprusoff is now required to miss at least the next two games. Expect to see Leland Irving between the pipes Saturday against Vancouver.
Lee Stempniak, RW2/7/2013 10:12:00 PM
Description: Flames winger Lee Stempniak had a power-play goal in the third period Thursday night versus Columbus.
Insight: Stempniak has four goals and two assists in eight games but it's hard to believe this will continue. He hasn't had more than 19 goals or 19 assists in any of his last four seasons.
Alex Tanguay, LW2/7/2013 10:08:00 PM
Description: Calgary Flames forward Alex Tanguay scored a game-winning goal in overtime Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Insight: Tanguay has eight points (4 G, 4 A) in eight games. He has always been more of a distributor than scorer but he does have 18 SOG this season.
Leland Irving, G2/7/2013 5:08:00 PM
Description: With starter Miika Kiprusoff dealing with a lower-body injury, Leland Irving will get the start between the pipes Thursday when the Flames face Columbus.
Insight: Irving blanked Detroit in the third period Tuesday after Kiprusoff left the game. That was his first appearance of the season, and Thursday will be his first start.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G2/6/2013 5:38:00 PM
Description: Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. SOURCE: NHL.com
Insight: Calgary will face Columbus Thursday and Vancouver Saturday. Leland Irving will likely start at least one of those games.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G2/5/2013 11:01:00 PM
Description: Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff left Tuesday's game with a lower-body injury. SOURCE: Elliotte Friedman, CBC.ca
Insight: That's a shame since Kiprusoff has finally been playing well. He saved 19 of 20 shots in 40 minutes Tuesday against Detroit after nearly beating Chicago in a 3-2 shootout loss Saturday.
Jarome Iginla, RW2/5/2013 10:10:00 PM
Description: Flames winger Jarome Iginla's goal Tuesday against the Red Wings was his first of the season.
Insight: Iginla has 517 career goals, including at least 30 in 11 straight seasons, so it was only a matter of time before he hit the net in 2013.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G2/5/2013 5:47:00 PM
Description: Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff will try to build off a shootout loss Saturday against Chicago when he takes on Detroit Tuesday.
Insight: Kiprusoff saved 17 of 19 shots in 65 minutes before losing in the shootout for his second overtime loss of the season. Kiprusoff has given up three or more goals in four of six starts and doesn't make for a good play Tuesday in Detroit.
Curtis Glencross, LW1/27/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: Flames left wing Curtis Glencross scored his third goal of the season Saturday in a win over Edmonton. He attempted four SOG in the game.
Insight: Glencross had 48 points (26 G, 22 A) with 110 SOG in 67 games last season, when he was used on the team's top line. He's back in that spot this season and should outproduce last season's per-game averages if he stays healthy.
Jiri Hudler, RW1/27/2013 11:28:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler (personal) made his season debut Saturday against Edmonton and had an assist.
Insight: Hudler should assume his place on Calgary's second line. He had 25 goals, 25 assists and 127 shots in 81 games last season.
Lee Stempniak, RW1/27/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Lee Stempniak has three goals and two assists with 13 shots in four games this season.
Insight: Stempniak had 28 points (14 G, 14 A) in 61 games last season but he was barely used in the top-nine forwards. He's getting top-six ice time this season but that could change now that Jiri Hudler has returned to the lineup.
Miikka Kiprusoff, G1/26/2013 9:02:00 PM
Description: Miikka Kiprusoff will get the start in the crease Saturday when the Flames face Edmonton. SOURCE: sportsnet.ca
Insight: Kiprusoff has been under fire so far, facing 89 shots in three games and allowing 11 goals. He won 35 games with a 2.35 GAA and .921 SV% last season and rarely gets a night off so obviously fantasy owners should hang onto him.
Jiri Hudler, RW1/26/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler is questionable for Saturday's game against Edmonton. He returned to practice on Thursday after missing time to attend his father's funeral.
Insight: Hudler scored 25 goals and 25 assists with Detroit last season and will likely be on one of the Flames' top two lines.
Jiri Hudler, RW1/23/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler has returned to the team after attending his father's funeral in the Czech Republic, according to a Calgary Herald report. He's listed as questionable for Wednesday, but most likely will make his season debut on Saturday.
Insight: Hudler scored 25 goals and 25 assists with Detroit last season and will likely be on one of the Flames' top two lines.
Roman Cervenka, LW1/23/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: Calgary forward Roman Cervenka has been told he can begin practicing Thursday, according to a Calgary Herald report. He's been sidelined by a blood clot since December.
Insight: The 27-year-old was considered a key to the Flames offense this season, but hasn't played in more than a month after being hit by a puck in a KHL game. He might be available as soon as the weekend.
Jarome Iginla, RW1/17/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Calgary winger Jarome Igina (groin) said he will suit up for Sunday's season opener against the Sharks. It will be his 411th consecutive start. SOURCE: Calgary Sun
Insight: Iginla skated Wednesday and said his groin felt better. "Thankfully, I felt really good -- way better than last week -- and I'm not expecting it to be an issue," said Iginla. Iginla scored 32 goals with 35 assists, 43 penalty minutes, 251 shots on goal and 19 power play points last season. His only weakness was a minus-10 differential.
Anton Babchuk, D1/16/2013 10:31:00 AM
Description: Calgary defenseman Anton Babchuk will miss at least three weeks due to a shoulder sprain he suffered in a KHL game.
Insight: Babchuk did very little in 2011 to draw the attention of fantasy owners with just 10 points over 32 games, but he was a productive scoring defenseman in 2008 and 2010, posting 35 points in each of those seasons.
Jarome Iginla, RW1/15/2013 11:28:00 AM
Description: Calgary winger Jarome Iginla is questionable for Sunday's game against San Jose due to a strained groin. Coach Bob Hartley now believes he will be ready to start the season, according to a Calgary Herald report.
Insight: Iginla skated on Monday and is expected to try again on Tuesday. The winger knows how to put the puck in the net. He's coming off a 32-goal season, his 11th consecutive season with at least 30 or more goals.
Jiri Hudler, RW1/15/2013 11:18:00 AM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler has left the team to be will his sick father in the Czech Republic, according to a Calgary Herald report. His return schedule is unknown at this time.
Insight: Hudler scored 25 goals and 25 assists with Detroit last season and will likely be on one of the Flames' top two lines.
Jiri Hudler, RW1/7/2013 1:09:00 PM
Description: Flames winger Jiri Hudler is questionable for the start of the season with an abdominal muscle problem.
Insight: Hudler scored 25 goals and 25 assists with Detroit last season and will likely be on one of the Flames' top two lines.
Roman Cervenka, LW1/7/2013 1:05:00 PM
Description: Calgary forward Roman Cervenka is out indefinitely with a blood clot, according to a Calgary Herald report.
Insight: The 27-year-old was considered a key to the Flames offense this season, but hasn't played in more than a month after being hit by a puck in a KHL game.
