American League Game Summary - Chicago at Texas
(Thursday, May 2nd)
Final Score: Chicago 3, Texas 1
Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Tyler Flowers hit a three-run homer in the
sixth and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Texas Rangers, 3-1, in the rubber
match of a three-game series.
Hector Santiago (1-1) allowed one run on two hits while striking out six over
5 1/3 innings for the White Sox, who won their first road series of the
season. Santiago made his first start of the year in place of Jake Peavy, who
was scratched due to back spasms.
"I kind of had prepared for tomorrow (Friday)," Santiago said. "I felt fine
and warming up I felt really good. Nothing was different than a regular day."
Adrian Beltre hit a solo homer for the Rangers, who lost their first series
this season. Starter Justin Grimm (2-1) gave up three runs on six hits while
striking out nine and walking four over 6 2/3 innings.
Beltre's homer to left in the second made it 1-0 Texas.
Chicago wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the third. With the bases
loaded and one out, Grimm got Paul Konerko and Conor Gillaspie to go down
The White Sox took the lead on Flowers' homer in the sixth. With two outs,
Gillaspie and Alexei Ramirez hit back-to-back singles. Flowers followed with a
blast over the wall in left for a 3-1 edge.
"He really had good stuff working tonight," Rangers manager Ron Washington
said of Grimm. "Just left one in the wrong spot to Flowers. Other than that,
he did what he had to do to keep us in the ballgame. We just couldn't put any
runs on the board."
The Rangers failed to score a run after loading the bases in the bottom half
of the frame. Ian Kinsler doubled and Elvis Andrus walked to chase Santiago
from the game. Matt Lindstrom came in from the bullpen and walked Lance
Berkman to fill the bags with one out. Beltre grounded into a double play to
end the threat.
Chicago sent Addison Reed to the mound in the ninth to close out the game. He
walked Nelson Cruz and David Murphy to put men on first and second with one
out. Reed settled down and got Mitch Moreland and Leonys Martin to go down
The White Sox have homered in 11 straight games ... Santiago had been slated
to pitch Friday's opener of a three-game series in Kansas City ... Texas went
0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight.
