Nats recall Walters to fill Zimmerman's spot

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Nationals officially placed third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves, one day after he fractured his right thumb.

Zimmerman sustained the injury diving into second base while being picked off in the fifth inning of Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Braves. He is expected to be sidelined from 4-to-6 weeks.

The 29-year-old was off to a good start in 2014, hitting .364 with two home runs and six RBI in 33 at-bats.

Anthony Rendon will move from second base to third during Zimmerman's absence, with Danny Espinosa becoming the likely regular at second.

Infielder Zach Walters was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Zimmerman's place on the active roster.

Walters went 3-for-8 in nine games with Washington after being called up from the minors last September, and batted .290 with three doubles and three RBI in nine games at Syracuse this season.
