Oakland Athletics Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Josh Reddick, RFCold4/16/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick will take a seat Wednesday versus the Angels. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: So much for that bounceback season. Reddick's nightmare 2013 campaign has carried over into 2014 (.098 AVG in 41 at bats). Don't expect the 27-year-old to turn things around anytime soon.
Coco Crisp, CF4/16/2014 7:15:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp made a pinch-hitting appearance on Tuesday but won't start Wednesday's game against Los Angeles. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: A hamstring injury has kept Crisp out of the starting lineup since Sunday. While he's been out, Craig Gentry (.444, 0 HR, 0 RBI) has been starting in center field.
Jed Lowrie, SS4/16/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs Tuesday against the Angels.
Insight: Lowrie is still hitting just .262 but his 6/15 K/BB and 27 percent line-drive rate suggest he's about to heat up.
Coco Crisp, CF4/15/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp (hamstring) will sit out again Tuesday, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Crisp missed three straight games last week due to an inflamed wrist and he has now missed the first two of this week. Injuries are nothing new for the 34-year-old -- he hasn't played more than 136 games in a season since 2007 and never played more than 145.
Brandon Moss, 1B4/15/2014 10:57:00 AM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss is a career .462 hitter with four extra base hits and a 1.423 OPS versus Angels starter Garrett Richards.
Insight: Moss hasn't started hitting the long ball yet (1 HR) but is batting .295 with 11 RBI this season. He didn't start on Monday as the A's gave Daric Barton a start, but should be ready to go Tuesday.
Scott Kazmir, SP4/14/2014 9:07:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Scott Kazmir (triceps) says he feels great and fully expects to make his next start, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Kazmir struck out nine over six scoreless innings Sunday but exited the game due to left triceps tightness. He dealt with the same issue in spring training.
Brandon Moss, 1B 4/14/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss is getting a breather Monday against the Angels.
Insight: Daric Barton is starting at first with LHP Hector Santiago on the mound for Los Angeles. Moss has an eight-game hitting streak and is batting .311 with one homer and 11 RBI in 45 at-bats this season.
Coco Crisp, CF4/14/2014 6:30:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp (hamstring) will not start Monday, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Crisp missed three straight games last week due to an inflamed wrist and he's out of the lineup again to start this week off. Injuries are nothing new for the 34-year-old -- he hasn't played more than 136 games in a season since 2007 and never played more than 145.
Sean Doolittle, RP4/13/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Athletics lefty reliever Sean Doolittle picked up a save Sunday against the Mariners.
Insight: Oakland went to Luke Gregerson for a two-out save Saturday after using Doolittle to set up, and on Sunday manager Bob Melvin reversed it and used Doolittle in the ninth because the Mariners had lefties Kyle Seager, Logan Morrison, Dustin Ackley and Michael Saunders due up. Ryan Cook may also get a save chance here or there as part of Oakland's committee, which replaced the ineffective Jim Johnson.
Josh Donaldson, 3BHot4/13/2014 9:49:00 PM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson has homered in three of the last four games.
Insight: His 15/1 K/BB is a little disconcerting, but he has three longballs, eight RBI and eight runs in 12 games.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF4/13/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes blasted a two-run home run Sunday at Seattle.
Insight: Cespedes took a step back last year, going from a .292 average and an .861 OPS in 2012 to a .240 average and a .736 OPS in 2013. Through 12 games in 2014, he's batting .234 but has two home runs and nine RBI.
Scott Kazmir, SP4/13/2014 7:34:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Scott Kazmir has triceps tightness, according to Jane Lee of mlb.com.
Insight: Kazmir struck out nine over six scoreless innings Sunday but exited the game. He dealt with the same issue in spring training but it isn't expected to hold him out of his next start.
Scott Kazmir, SP4/13/2014 6:24:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Scott Kazmir left Sunday's start after six innings due to an apparent arm injury.
Insight: Kazmir struck out nine over six scoreless innings but was spotted in the dugout talking to manager Bob Melvin and the team trainer while holding his left forearm during the seventh inning. A scout told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that Kazmir's velocity dropped in his last inning and he was wiggling his fingers a lot after one pitch.
Jed Lowrie, SS4/13/2014 1:31:00 PM
Description: A's shortstop Jed Lowrie won't start Sunday against Seattle.
Insight: Lowrie hasn't gotten it going yet this season, batting just .242 through 11 games. Nick Punto (.214, 0 HR, 0 RBI) will give it a try Sunday in the series finale.
Coco Crisp, CF4/12/2014 5:56:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp has returned to the starting lineup. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He missed three games with an inflamed wrist before returning as a pinch-hitter Friday against Seattle. Crisp enters tonight's action with a .250 average across 16 at bats this season.
Josh Reddick, RF4/11/2014 6:17:00 PM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick is out of the lineup again Friday.
Insight: Jane Lee of mlb.com reported earlier Friday that Reddick could be demoted following the activation of Craig Gentry (back) from the DL, but Reddick was spotted taking batting practice and is still on the roster. After hitting .226 last year, Reddick is off to a 3-for-29 start with 13 Ks. His 32-homer 2012 season seems like it was ages ago.
Coco Crisp, CF4/11/2014 6:04:00 PM
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp (wrist) is not in the starting lineup Friday, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Crisp recently had a cortisone shot to relieve inflammation in his left wrist. Defensive specialist Sam Fuld has been starting in Crisp's place and hit a homer Thursday.
Josh Donaldson, 3BCold4/11/2014 10:21:00 AM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson is a career .111 hitter (2-for-18) with eight strikeouts against Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Donaldson has not started out the season like last year, batting just .220 through the first nine games. Last season he was a huge fantasy surprise batting .314 in April, .330 in May and .303 in June before cooling off a bit. This unfavorable matchup isn't going to help.
Josh Donaldson, 3B4/10/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson went 2-for-22 over his first five games this season but he's 7-for-19 with three doubles, a homer, five RBI and five runs over his last four.
Insight: Donaldson hit his first homer of the season Thursday at Minnesota. However, he also struck out two times and has a 13/1 K/BB in 41 at-bats. Donaldson's K/BB in 2013 was 110/76 and he batted .301 with 24 HRs and 93 RBI.
Jim Johnson, RPCold4/10/2014 12:49:00 PM
Description: Athletics closer Jim Johnson is out as the Oakland's closer. He had another rocky outing Wednesday afternoon, allowing two hits, two walks and two earned runs in 1/3 of an inning.
Insight: Luke Gregerson and Ryan Cook are the likely next in line for saves, but it appears to be a closer-by-committee until someone grabs the ring and runs with it.
Josh Reddick, RF4/10/2014 10:35:00 AM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick is out of the lineup Thursday.
Insight: Reddick is batting just .103 this spring with a league-leading or is that league worst 13 strikeouts. A day off may be what he needs. Brandon Moss will play in right field and Daric Barton at 1B.
Jim Johnson, RPCold4/9/2014 6:30:00 PM
Description: Athletics closer Jim Johnson had another rocky outing Wednesday afternoon, allowing two hits, two walks and two earned runs in 1/3 of an inning.
Insight: The Athletics had a 4-2 lead going into the ninth, but Johnson coughed it up. The only reason he didn't get a blown save is because the A's removed him when it was still 4-3, though the runners on base still belonged to him. He has walked six batters and allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings this season. Luke Gregerson is likely next in line for saves.
Jesse Chavez, RPHot4/9/2014 5:00:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jesse Chavez struck out nine and walked none over seven innings of one-run ball Wednesday afternoon at Minnesota.
Insight: The A's provided him with a four-run lead before he even threw a pitch and he was in line for the win but Jim Johnson had another ninth-inning meltdown. Chavez has picked up two no decisions this season but owns a 1.38 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and a 13/2 K/BB in 13 innings. He had a 2.22 ERA and a 25/6 K/BB in 28 1/3 innings this spring.
Jed Lowrie, SS4/9/2014 12:20:00 PM
Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie is back in the lineup after leaving Monday's game with a bruised leg. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He was taken out as a precaution and was never expected to miss any time. Fantasy owners like Lowrie (.286, 1 HR, 4 RBI) because he's eligible at both second base and shortstop.
Coco Crisp, CF4/9/2014 10:48:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp will miss his second game in a row Wednesday versus Minnesota. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Crisp recently had a cortisone shot to relieve inflammation in his left wrist. Sam Fuld (.222, 0 HR, 2 RBI) will serve as Oakland's center fielder during Crisp's recovery.
Jed Lowrie, SS4/7/2014 7:32:00 PM
Description: A's shortstop Jed Lowrie exited Monday's game with a bruised right leg. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: He was hit by a pitch. Don't be surprised if Lowrie (.286, 1 HR, 4 RBI) is back in the lineup for Oakland's next game Wednesday against the Twins.
Sam Fuld, LF4/7/2014 2:42:00 PM
Description: A's outfielder Sam Fuld will start for Coco Crisp in center Monday afternoon against Minnesota.
Insight: Suld has batted .308 through the first three games with a .973 OPS. He stole 20 bases once with Tampa Bay (2011), but has never proven to be an everyday player.
Coco Crisp, CF4/7/2014 2:40:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is not in Monday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Crisp has been dealing with a sore left wrist. He's getting on base with a 1.055 OPS so far after putting together a solid season in 2013, batting .261 with 22 HR, 66 RBI, 93 runs and 21 stolen bases.
Jed Lowrie, SS4/5/2014 8:07:00 PM
Description: Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie had two hits, including a solo homer, Saturday against King Felix and the Mariners.
Insight: Lowrie's homer broke up Hernandez' shutout in the ninth inning. The 29-year-old infielder hit a career-high .290 with 15 homers, 75 RBI, 80 runs and a .790 OPS last season. Lowrie never played more than 97 games in his first five years in the majors but played 154 last year.
Jim Johnson, RPCold4/3/2014 10:38:00 AM
Description: A's closer Jim Johnson received a vote of confidence from manager Bob Melvin after Wednesday night's blown save, according to Susan Slusser of the sfgate.com.
Insight: Johnson has given up five runs in two appearances, taking a loss on Monday and blowing the save on Wednesday night. The truth is they have no other good options.
Scott Kazmir, SP4/2/2014 7:36:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Scott Kazmir held his former team, the Cleveland Indians, scoreless over 7 1/3 three-hit innings Wednesday afternoon in his A's debut. He walked none and struck out five.
Insight: After sitting out all but 1 2/3 innings in 2011 and all of 2012, Kazmir revived his career with the Indians last season. He went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP and 162 Ks in 158 innings and had a 3.06 ERA in his final 103 innings.
Jesse Chavez, RP4/1/2014 8:58:00 PM
Description: Oakland's Jesse Chavez was scheduled to start Wednesday afternoon against the Indians, but he has been pushed back to Thursday due to Tuesday's rainout. SOURCE: Jane Lee, mlb.com.
Insight: Tuesday's scheduled starter Scott Kazmir will pitch the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, and the Athletics will call someone up to start the second game. Chavez had a 2.22 ERA and a 25/6 K/BB over 28 1/3 innings this spring to win a spot in Oakland's rotation.
Sonny Gray, SP4/1/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Athletics Opening Day starter Sonny Gray took a comebacker off his ankle Monday, but manager Bob Melvin said the young hurler is fine, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Gray struck out seven batters over six scoreless innings Monday against the Indians but took a no decision. He had a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 67 Ks in 64 innings as a rookie last year.
Sonny Gray, SP4/1/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Athletics young right-hander Sonny Gray was solid on Opening Day, though he ended up with a no-decision.
Insight: Gray went six innings, yielding five hits and no runs while striking out seven. He inherited the start when A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker went down with injuries. A lot is on the 24-year-old's shoulders, but he has the talent to be a team ace. Hopefully the A's will back him with a few runs next time out.
Joe Blanton, SP3/31/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Joe Blanton is returning to Oakland on a minor league contract. SOURCE: Matt Eddy, Baseball America
Insight: The Angels cut him about a week ago. Blanton hasn't posted an ERA lower than four since 2007. That came during his first stint with the A's.
Craig Gentry, OF3/23/2014 3:21:00 PM
Description: Oakland outfielder Craig Gentry will open the season on the disabled list. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: He's been slow to recover from a strained back. The A's are expecting him back in mid-April. Until then, Josh Reddick (.226, 12 HR, 56 RBI) will hold down the fort in right field.
Sonny Gray, SP3/23/2014 12:55:00 PM
Description: The Athletics will go with Sonny Gray on Opening Day, according to Jane Lee of mlb.com.
Insight: The Athletics really had no other choice but to throw Gray into that spot. They lost Jarrod Parker to Tommy John surgery and will start the year with A.J. Griffin on the DL as well. Gray had a 3.42 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings at Triple-A last season and then went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 67 Ks in 64 innings. The right-hander has a plus fastball, an excellent curveball and also gets a ton of grounders. He should easily outperform his ADP this season.
Scott Kazmir, SP3/18/2014 7:59:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Scott Kazmir (triceps) will throw a bullpen session this week and return to the rotation Saturday, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Kazmir was scratched from Monday's start with triceps tightness. The Athletics rotation has been hit hard by injuries in the past week with A.J. Griffin suffering an elbow injury and Jarrod Parker needing Tommy John surgery, so it's good to see that Kazmir's injury is minor.
Josh Donaldson, 3B3/18/2014 6:19:00 PM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson will return to the lineup Wednesday, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Donaldson left Sunday's lineup with minor tightness in his right calf.
Scott Kazmir, SP3/17/2014 4:58:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Scott Kazmir was scratched from Monday's start due to left triceps tightness, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: It's been a bad few days for Oakland hurlers. The A's learned Monday that Jarrod Parker needs Tommy John surgery, A.J. Griffin is expected to start the season on the DL due to elbow issues and now Kazmir is dealing with an injury. The good news is that Athletics assistant GM David Forst said Kazmir's injury is minor and he may start Tuesday.
Jarrod Parker, SP3/17/2014 4:49:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker will undergo Tommy John surgery next Tuesday and miss the entire season, according to Jane Lee of mlb.com.
Insight: Parker met with Dr. James Andrews Monday to figure out the cause of his forearm tightness, and evidently he has a torn ligament. It's his second time undergoing the surgery. Jesse Chavez and Tommy Milone will start the season in the rotation with Parker and A.J. Griffin (elbow) out.
Jarrod Parker, SP3/16/2014 8:34:00 PM
Description: The Athletics don't believe Jarrod Parker (forearm) has any structural damage in his arm, according to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation.
Insight: Parker will meet with Dr. James Andrews Monday. He has one Tommy John surgery on his record, but hopefully this isn't that bad. He was 12-8 with a 3.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 2013.
Josh Donaldson, 3B3/16/2014 8:27:00 PM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson exited Sunday's game with right calf tightness, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: A's manager Bob Melvin said he doesn't think the injury is a big deal and that Donaldson should be in Tuesday's lineup.
A.J. Griffin, SP3/15/2014 7:15:00 PM
Description: A.J. Griffin's elbow injury will keep him on the shelf for at least three weeks. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He's been diagnosed with flexor tendinitis. All signs point to Griffin beginning the year on the DL. Tommy Milone (6-5, 3.83 ERA last season) will probably take Griffin's place in the starting rotation.
Tommy Milone, SP3/14/2014 5:55:00 PM
Description: Athletics lefty Tommy Milone has a good chance of beginning the season in the rotation following injuries to Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin.
Insight: Milone had an unspectacular 3.92 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 263 strikeouts in 346 1/3 innings the last two seasons.
Jesse Chavez, RP3/14/2014 5:52:00 PM
Description: Jesse Chavez and Tommy Milone are expected to begin the season in the Athletics rotation following injuries to Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Chavez has fired 12 2/3 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts and two walks this spring. He has a career 5.48 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 234 2/3 major league innings but posted a 3.92 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 55 K in 57 1/3 frames with Oakland last season.
A.J. Griffin, SP3/14/2014 3:39:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter A.J. Griffin will see a doctor concerning an elbow injury, according to A's beat writer Susan Slusser.
Insight: Griffin could end up missing the start of the season depending upon what the doctor sees. He's struggled this spring with a 10.38 ERA and 2.19 WHIP in 8.2 IP. The A's pitching staff is hurting with both Griffin and Jarrod Parker sidelined.
Jarrod Parker, SP3/14/2014 3:36:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker has been dealing with tightness in his right forearm and will visit Dr. James Andrews, according to A's beat writer Susan Slusser.
Insight: It's going to be a crowded waiting room in Dr. Andrews' office on Monday. Brandon Beachy and Kris Medlen are also scheduled for that day. Parker has one Tommy John surgery on his record, but hopefully this isn't that bad. He was 12-8 with a 3.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 2013.
Derek Norris, C3/10/2014 2:06:00 PM
Description: Oakland catcher Derek Norris will be out a few days longer to due a tightness in his back.
Insight: That's not good for a guy who has to squat for the next six months. Norris is expected to do the majority of the A's catching this season. He batted .246 with nine homers and 30 RBI in 264 at-bats last season.
Josh Reddick, RF3/6/2014 12:49:00 PM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick is out of the lineup Sunday.
Insight: Reddick has started off 2-for-20 and this year he doesn't have a sprained wrist to blame for his struggles.
Josh Donaldson, 3B2/27/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson is likely to hit second for Oakland this season, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Insight: Donaldson was the No. 2 hitter in 23 of his last 30 starts last season and hit .326 with four homers, 15 RBI, 21 runs and a 1.003 OPS in those games. He's coming off an excellent season in which he hit .301 with 24 homers, 94 RBI, 89 runs and an .883 OPS. He hit .290 with eight homers, 26 RBI and an .844 OPS in his final 47 games of 2012, so his breakout season wasn't unfounded. He's being undervalued in fantasy drafts, especially in yahoo.com leagues where his ADP is 90.
Craig Gentry, CF2/26/2014 11:25:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Craig Gentry will be on the shelf for at least ten more days. He's been dealing with a strained lower back. SOURCE: John Hickey, Contra Costa Times
Insight: This won't help Gentry (.280, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 24 SB for Texas in 2013) in his quest to become Oakland's everyday right fielder. He's a late round flier at best.
Ryan Cook, RP2/15/2014 10:56:00 AM
Description: A's righthander Ryan Cook is dealing with shoulder soreness and won't be able to pitch for at least the next week. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: Cook posted a sub-three ERA for the second year in a row in 2013. He'll be productive again in 2014, though we wouldn't expect him to see many save opportunities with Jim Johnson pitching the ninth inning.
Coco Crisp, CF2/7/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp has agreed a two-year, $22.75 million contract extension.
Insight: Crisp put together a solid season in 2013, batting .261 with 22 HR, 66 RBI, 93 runs and 21 stolen bases. For Crisp, it's usually about staying healthy. Last year, he was able to play in 131 of Oakland's 162 regular season contests.
Sam Fuld, LF2/4/2014 6:20:00 PM
Description: The A's have invited former Rays outfielder Sam Fuld to spring training. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: With Yoenis Cespedes and Coco Crisp occupying left and center field respectively, Fuld's best chance to make the team will be as a right fielder. Even if Josh Reddick or Craig Gentry beats him out for the starting job, it's possible that Oakland will hold onto Fuld as a reserve, though he wouldn't have any fantasy value in that role.
Dallas Braden, SP1/14/2014 7:23:00 PM
Description: Former A's lefthander Dallas Braden is retiring from baseball. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Braden captivated the baseball world with his perfect game against the Rays in 2010. Since then, he's only logged eight victories and hasn't even pitched at the big league level since 2011. He'll retire with a 4.16 ERA in 94 Major League appearances.
Grant Balfour, RP12/20/2013 8:45:00 PM
Description: The Orioles' two-year deal with closer Grant Balfour has fallen through due to medical concerns, but the right-hander claims he is "100 percent fine," according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Balfour saved a career-high 38 games with the Athletics last season and has posted a sub-2.60 ERA in four straight seasons. The O's signed him to close after trading Jim Johnson to Balfour's old team in Oakland, but they backed out.
Craig Gentry, CF12/3/2013 9:32:00 PM
Description: The Rangers sent outfielder Craig Gentry to Oakland as part of a four-player swap. SOURCE: Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports
Insight: Gentry was a solid platoon guy for Texas last season, batting .280 with 22 RBI in 246 at bats. The problem is the A's already have a guy like that in Seth Smith. Gentry is only going to see playing time if one of Oakland's starters (Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp and Josh Reddick) gets injured. Until that happens, he won't have any fantasy significance.
Jim Johnson, RP12/3/2013 7:48:00 PM
Description: The A's have acquired closer Jim Johnson in a trade with Baltimore.
Insight: The Orioles will receive second baseman Jemile Weeks. No player in the majors has more saves than Johnson over the last two seasons (101 saves in 113 chances). He's replacing Grant Balfour, who became a free agent after the season.
Bartolo Colon, SP12/2/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: Now that the A's have signed lefthander Scott Kazmir, they're probably out of the running for Bartolo Colon. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: In an unusual move, Billy Beane opened up his pocket book and forked over $22 million for Kazmir, who figures to be a four or five starter at best. Given the team's tight budget, Colon is probably out of the equation. The 40-year-old had a resurgent season in 2013 and shouldn't have any difficulty securing a new contract.
Scott Kazmir, SP12/2/2013 3:16:00 PM
Description: The Oakland A's have agreed to a two-year, $22 million deal with lefthander Scott Kazmir.
Insight: Kazmir was 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP last season in Cleveland. He was especially good in September, going 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.214 WHIP in the season's final month.
Philip Humber, SP11/2/2013 9:01:00 PM
Description: The A's have signed former White Sox and Astros starter Philip Humber to a minor league contract. SOURCE: Matt Eddy, Baseball America
Insight: Humber owns a 16-23 record in 97 big league appearances. His best season came in 2011 when he went 9-9 with a 3.75 ERA in 28 games for the White Sox.
Josh Reddick, RF10/31/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick had wrist surgery on Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Reddick followed up his breakout 2012 campaign with a disappointing season in 2013 (.226, 12 HR, 56 RBI in 114 games). He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Josh Reddick, RF10/14/2013 3:27:00 PM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick is headed for surgery on his right wrist. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: Reddick followed up his breakout 2012 campaign with a disappointing season in 2013 (.226, 12 HR, 56 RBI in 114 games). It's possible the wrist injury contributed to his struggles. Reddick's power should return next season but we wouldn't expect him to hit better than .250 (.239 career average).
Sonny Gray, SP10/14/2013 3:23:00 PM
Description: Further testing on Sonny Gray's injured thumb revealed a torn UCL. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: The injury will require surgery. Gray is righthanded and the torn UCL is on his left thumb, so he won't have to worry about the injury affecting his mechanics. Gray (5-3, 2.67 ERA) had a strong rookie season and should be a nice fantasy option in 2014.
Jarrod Parker, SP10/11/2013 5:19:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker has been dealing with tightness in his right elbow so he'll have an MRI, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
Insight: Parker has one Tommy John surgery on his record, but manager Bob Melvin said this tightness is not to the same extent as that injury. The A's were eliminated from the postseason by the Tigers Thursday night.
Sonny Gray, SP10/11/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: A's rookie pitcher Sonny Gray suffered a broken left thumb after he was hit by Prince Fielder in the fifth inning of Thursday's game with Detroit, according to a CSNBayArea.com report.
Insight: It's his non-throwing hand, so he should be fine when spring training rolls around. Gray pitched very well down the stretch, going 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 10 regular season starts.
Alberto Callaspo, 2B10/10/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: The A's are switching things up at second base. After starting Eric Sogard at second in the first four games of the series, Alberto Callaspo will start there Thursday in Game 5 against Detroit. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: TBS' Keith Olbermann alluded to this on last night's Pirates/Cardinals broadcast so the move isn't completely out of left field. Callaspo is 1-for-3 in the series with a double while Sogard has gone 0-for-9 in ten plate appearances (one walk).
Josh Reddick, RF10/10/2013 10:54:00 AM
Description: Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick has had a tough season and it won't get any easier Thursday against Tigers ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: Reddick is a .154 lifetime hitter versus Verlander, though he's done well against the rest of Detroit's pitching staff (.341 in 41 at bats). Verlander should be in it for the long haul (he pitched seven innings in Game 2) so it's tough to envision Reddick having any level of success in Game 5.
Sonny Gray, SPHot10/9/2013 7:24:00 PM
Description: The A's will give rookie Sonny Gray a chance to be the hero Thursday night against the Tigers.
Insight: He'll get the ball for the decisive Game 5 a mere five days after limiting Detroit to four hits in a Game 2 no-decision (the A's would later win on a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth). Oakland's other option for Game 5 was Bartolo Colon, who will probably be available out of the bullpen should Gray get knocked out of the game early. The winner of Thursday's game will head to Fenway Park to play the Red Sox in the ALCS on Saturday.
Coco Crisp, CF10/8/2013 10:24:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is a career .400 hitter (6-for-15) against Detroit right-hander Doug Fister with a pair of triples and a 1.067 OPS.
Insight: Crisp is 3-for-9 with three walks and a pair of extra base hits in the first three games of the series. He's a must start.
Josh Reddick, RFCold10/7/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick is hitless in six at bats versus Game 3 starter Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: This has been a year to forget for Reddick who blasted 28 homers last season, but managed just 12 in 114 games this year. He's 1-for-7 in the series with Detroit and should be avoided in this unfavorable matchup.
Seth Smith, OF10/7/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Oakland DH Seth Smith is a career 6-for-17 (.353) with two home runs and a 1.186 OPS against Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: Smith didn't do much this season batting .253 with eight homers and 40 RBI in 368 at-bats, but this is a favorable matchup. He went 2-for-4 in Saturday's 1-0 victory over the Tigers.
Jarrod Parker, SP10/7/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker gets the tough assignment - starting Game 3 against Tigers in Detroit.
Insight: Parker faced the Tigers just once this season and it didn't turn out well for the right-hander. He pitched 3 1/3 innings back in April and gave up nine hits and eight earned runs.
Josh Reddick, RF10/5/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick went hitless in Monday's playoff opener and he faces another tough matchup with Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers on Saturday.
Insight: The Detroit righthander has limited Reddick to a .154 average in 13 career at bats. Reddick (.226, 12 HR, 56 RBI) regressed in a major way this year after a breakout 2012 campaign (.242, 32 HR, 85 RBI). We're guessing he won't be much of a factor in this series.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF10/4/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes (shoulder) was throwing on Thursday and is now expected to play left field in Friday's ALDS series opener against Detroit.
Insight: At worst, Cespedes would be the DH, so his bat will be in the lineup either way. The outfielder's September was his best month this season as he batted .314 with six homers, 19 RBI and a .907 OPS. He's 0-for-2 with two walks versus Tigers Game 1 starter Max Scherzer.
Sonny Gray, SP10/1/2013 9:55:00 PM
Description: Athletics rookie pitcher Sonny Gray will start Game 2 of the ALDS against the Tigers.
Insight: The 23-year-old went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 64 innings this season. The A's have never been averse to throwing their young pitchers into the fire. Just last year, rookies Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone and A.J. Griffin started for the team in the ALDS against Detroit. The Athletics will follow Bartolo Colon in Game 1 and Gray in Game 2 with Jarrod Parker in Game 3 and Dan Straily in Game 4.
Bartolo Colon, SPHot10/1/2013 9:50:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Bartolo Colon will start Game 1 of the ALDS Friday against the Detroit Tigers. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle

A.J. Griffin, SP10/1/2013 9:46:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter A.J. Griffin will miss the ALDS against the Tigers due to an elbow injury, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: A's manager Bob Melvin said that Griffin has been dealing with elbow tendinitis for awhile and that it has been getting worse. The right-hander tossed an even 200 innings this year and while he allowed a major-league-high 36 home runs, Griffin went 14-10 with a 3.83 ERA, 171 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP. He hopes to return for the ALCS if the Athletics make it that far.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF10/1/2013 9:41:00 PM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes (shoulder) took batting practice Tuesday and thinks he'll play Friday in Game 1 of the ALDS against Detroit, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Cespedes had his best month of the season in September despite battling a shoulder injury. He hit .314 with six homers, 19 RBI and a .907 OPS during the month and .240 with 26 homers, 80 RBI and a .737 OPS on the year.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF9/29/2013 1:30:00 PM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes will sit out Sunday's regular season finale because of a sore shoulder.
Insight: He'll have about three or four days to heal up before the A's host Detroit in the ALDS. Cespedes will finish the regular season with a career-high 26 HR in 135 games.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF9/28/2013 8:59:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes is doubtful for Sunday's game against Texas. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle

Yoenis Cespedes, LF9/28/2013 1:35:00 PM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes is not in the lineup Saturday.
Insight: Cespedes left Friday's game after aggravating his shoulder injury on a swing. He'll probably miss Sunday's game as well.
Brandon Moss, 1BHot9/28/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss' lone hit Friday night was a three-run homer in the first inning off Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Hernandez didn't give up any more runs after that. Moss has crushed 11 homers and driven in 30 runs while hitting .316/.416/.758 over his last 32 games and now has 29 homers, 84 RBI and an .854 OPS on the season.
Bartolo Colon, SPHot9/28/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Bartolo Colon struck out eight and allowed two runs on three hits over six innings in his final start of the regular season Friday against the Mariners.
Insight: The 40-year-old went 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA in his final four starts and won 18 games with six losses, a 2.65 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and a 1.37 BB/9 on the year. His performance really came out of nowhere after he went just 32-40 with a 4.38 ERA in 573 2/3 innings from 2006-12 and was suspended for PED use last season.
Nate Freiman, 1B9/27/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: A's first baseman Nate Freiman is questionable for Friday's game against the Seattle with a strained ab muscle.
Insight: The 26-year-old rookie is batting .275 with four homers and 24 RBI in 189 at-bats, but he's just a part-time guy and has little fantasy value.

Josh Donaldson, 3B9/25/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: A's third baseman Josh Donaldson is hitless in eight at bats versus Angels right-hander Jered Weaver.
Insight: The 27-year-old Donaldson is in the midst of a breakout season and is hitting .305 with a career-high 24 HR and 92 RBI. This is a poor matchup, however, to be avoided.
Yoenis Cespedes, LFHot9/24/2013 1:17:00 PM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes tested his throwing shoulder on Monday and could start playing games in the outfield again.
Insight: For fantasy owners it doesn't really matter whether he plays the outfield or DH, just that his bat is in the lineup. His September (.338, 6 HR, 19 RBI) was the most productive month of the season.
Nate Freiman, 1B9/24/2013 11:40:00 AM
Description: A's first baseman Nate Freiman is questionable for Tuesday's game against the LA Angels with a strained ab muscle.
Insight: The 26-year-old rookie is batting .275 with four homers and 24 RBI in 189 at-bats, but he's just a part-time guy and has little fantasy value.
Yoenis Cespedes, LFHot9/21/2013 9:32:00 PM
Description: Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes went yard Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Cespedes, who will likely DH for the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury, went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs in the game. September has been Cespedes' best month this season, as he has hit .361 with six home runs and 19 RBI in 18 games. He batted .237 or lower in each of the previous five months.

Jarrod Parker, SP9/16/2013 7:11:00 PM
Description: Oakland righthander Jarrod Parker will make the start Monday against the Angels.

Description: Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick is just 1-for-11 with six strikeouts against Texas ace Yu Darvish.

Description: Oakland starter A.J. Griffin ran his winning streak to four in a row Thursday against Minnesota.

Coco Crisp, CFHot9/3/2013 5:54:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp (shin) is in the lineup Tuesday against the Rangers after fouling a ball off his leg Monday.
Insight: That's good news because Crisp is 17-for-48 (.354) with seven homers in his last 12 games and a homer in his last three. This really came out of nowhere -- Crisp had hit .184 with two home runs and a .497 OPS in 45 games from June 18 to Aug. 19.
Coco Crisp, CFHot9/3/2013 10:44:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is questionable for Tuesday's game against Texas with a bruised right shin.
Insight: Crisp is 17-for-48 (.354) with seven homers in his last 12 games and a homer in his last three. This really came out of nowhere -- Crisp had hit .184 with two home runs and a .497 OPS in 45 games from June 18 to Aug. 19. It would be a shame if an injury slowed his streak.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF9/2/2013 9:03:00 PM
Description: Athletics left fielder Yoenis Cespedes has hit .243 with six homers since the All-Star break.
Insight: Those are disappointing results for a player who struggled in the first half but put on a great show in winning the Home Run Derby during the All-Star break and possesses All-Star potential. Coco Crisp, CFHot9/2/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp has homered in five out of his last ten games. However, it may be tough for him to keep that streak going Monday against Derek Holland.
Insight: Crisp has only managed two hits in 14 at bats against the lefthander. Crisp (.258, 16 HR, 48 RBI, 17 SB) and the A's are one game behind Texas for the AL West lead.
Josh Donaldson, 3B9/2/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: A's third baseman Josh Donaldson could be in for a nice afternoon Monday against Texas.
Insight: Donaldson has always done well against lefthander Derek Holland (5-for-11 with a home run and two RBI). If you were one of the owners who took a flier on Donaldson in the late rounds last March, it's paying off big time. The 27-year-old is hitting .292 with a career-high 19 HR in 134 appearances in 2013.
A.J. Griffin, SP9/1/2013 7:35:00 PM

Insight: The 23-year-old had his worst start of the month his last time out, allowing six runs over 3 1/3 innings. He's 2-2 with a 2.90 ERA and 31 K in 31 innings since joining the rotation on Aug. 10. The 2011 first-round pick should be added in all formats.
Brandon Moss, 1BHot8/29/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: A's first baseman Brandon Moss bopped another homer Thursday in a loss to the Tigers.
Insight: It was the first baseman's seventh blast in his last ten contests. Moss still strikes out a lot (seven whiffs in his last five outings) but when he makes contact, he can really give that ball a ride. His 25 homers this year are a career-high.
Bartolo Colon, SP8/29/2013 7:33:00 PM
Description: A's righthander Bartolo Colon pitched well in his return from a strained groin Thursday against the Tigers (5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 K, 0 BB).
Insight: He would have picked up the win too, if not for Torii Hunter's game-winning homer in the ninth inning. Colon's numbers this year are a bit puzzling. Though he boasts a strong ERA (2.94 in 25 starts), opponents have actually hit pretty well against him (.270 AVG). Colon's next start is Tuesday against Texas.
Brandon Moss, 1BHot8/28/2013 10:44:00 PM
Description: Oakland first baseman Brandon Moss lit up the scoreboard Wednesday night against Detroit.
Insight: He finished the game with four hits, two homers and six RBI. Moss is in the midst of a giant power surge with six homers in his last nine contests. His batting average has risen by 14 points over that span (.238 to .252).
Tommy Milone, SP8/28/2013 8:54:00 PM
Description: The Athletics sent lefthander Tommy Milone down to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
Insight: They did it to make room on the roster for Brett Anderson. He'll be back up when the rosters expand to 40 at the start of September.
Brett Anderson, SP8/28/2013 7:22:00 PM
Description: Oakland lefthander Brett Anderson has been activated from the 60-day DL.
Insight: Don't get too excited. The A's are using him as a reliever this time around. Anderson, who missed about four months with a stress fracture in his right foot, has only made one relief appearance in five seasons.
Coco Crisp, CFHot8/28/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp is a career .500 hitter against Detroit right-hander Doug Fister.
Insight: Crisp is playing his best ball of the season, batting .450 this week and .306 over the past four week. He's produced that nice combination of speed (16 SB) and power (14 HR) that fantasy owners crave.
Bartolo Colon, SP8/27/2013 5:40:00 PM
Description: The Athletics have confirmed that Bartolo Colon (groin) will start Thursday at Detroit, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
Insight: Colon lost two straight starts and posted a 13.50 ERA prior to going on the disabled list with a groin injury, but he had gone 11-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 15 starts before that.
Coco Crisp, CFHot8/27/2013 10:56:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp is a career .364 hitter (8-for-22) against Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Crisp is on fire with three hits on Monday night and nine hits (three home runs) in his last 18 at-bats. Despite facing a Cy Young Award winner, Crisp is a must start on Tuesday.
Bartolo Colon, SP8/26/2013 7:47:00 PM
Description: Oakland ace Bartolo Colon expects to return Thursday against Detroit. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Colon was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a strained groin. The 40-year-old righthander got off to an excellent start (12-3, 2.70 ERA before the All-Star break) but hasn't been able to keep it up in the second half (2-2, 4.23).
Josh Reddick, RF8/26/2013 4:54:00 PM
Description: As expected, the A's have placed right fielder Josh Reddick on the 15-day DL.
Insight: Reddick is out with a sprained wrist. Chris Young (.192, 11 HR, 34 RBI) will hold down the fort in right field while he's gone.
Josh Reddick, RF8/26/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick aggravated his right wrist injury and is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Reddick (.213, 10 HR, 46 RBI) has been dealing with right wrist issues since he sprained it back in April. He has aggravated it twice this week.

Description: Going back to late May, Athletics starter Jarrod Parker has won eight straight decisions.
Insight: After starting out 1-5 with a 7.34 ERA in his first seven starts, Parker is 9-1 with a 2.58 ERA over his last 19. His overall numbers -- 10-6, 3.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP -- are very similar to last season.
Jarrod Parker, SPHot8/24/2013 8:05:00 PM
Description: A's righthander Jarrod Parker moved his record to 10-6 with a win Saturday at Baltimore (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 5 K's).
Insight: He's 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA this month with 31 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. Parker is only available in about 20 percent of leagues so you better hurry.
Josh Reddick, RF8/24/2013 1:38:00 PM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick (sprained his right wrist) is in the lineup for Saturday's game with Baltimore.
Insight: Reddick sprained the same wrist back in April and spent three weeks on the disabled list in May with discomfort. This time he missed just two games.
Coco Crisp, CF8/23/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp dismantled the Orioles Friday at Camden Yards.
Insight: Crisp provided four hits including his 12th home run of the season in the third inning. Before tonight, Crisp's last four-hit game came on June 3rd against Milwaukee.
Kurt Suzuki, C8/23/2013 2:55:00 PM
Description: Oakland has re-acquired catcher Kurt Suzuki in a trade with Washington.
Insight: He'll fill in while Derek Norris and John Jaso are out with injuries. Suzuki will be more useful to the A's than to fantasy owners with his .223 batting average and .595 OPS.
Josh Reddick, RF8/23/2013 11:40:00 AM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick sprained his right wrist again Wednesday and is doubtful for Friday's game against Baltimore.
Insight: Reddick sprained the same wrist back in April and spent three weeks on the disabled list in May with discomfort. We await MRI results. Chris Young would become the starting right fielder if Reddick has to miss an extended period of time.
A.J. Griffin, SP8/21/2013 8:00:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter A.J. Griffin has allowed 12 homers over his last 41 2/3 innings (2.59 HR/9).
Insight: He somehow has managed to post a less-than-terrible 4.32 ERA in that span. He gave up two longballs and four earned runs over six innings Wednesday against the Mariners and has a 3.84 ERA despite carrying a 4.73 FIP.
Brandon Moss, 1B8/21/2013 7:57:00 PM
Description: With a solo home run Wednesday, Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss reached 20 homers for the second straight season.
Insight: It took him just 265 at-bats to hit 21 homers last season, but it has taken a little longer this year to reach 20. In 352 at-bats, Moss is hitting .241 with 56 RBI and a .782 OPS, down 172 points from 2012.
Coco Crisp, CF8/21/2013 7:55:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp (wrist) went deep for the 11th time this season Wednesday afternoon against Seattle.
Insight: He hit a leadoff bomb off Hisashi Iwakuma. Crisp's wrist appears to be OK when hitting against right-handers, but the switch-hitter cannot bat right-handed without soreness and likely will sit against southpaws in the near future.
Josh Reddick, RF8/21/2013 7:45:00 PM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick sprained his right wrist again Wednesday and will undergo an MRI, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.

Yoenis Cespedes, LF8/21/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Athletics left fielder Yoenis Cespedes has a career .400 batting average with three homers against Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: Last year Cespedes had a huge second half with 14 HR and a .909 OPS in his final 75 games, but that hasn't materialized this time around. He's only been slightly improved over the first half posting a .240 batting average with five homers and 15 RBI in 26 games.
Derek Norris, C8/21/2013 9:26:00 AM
Description: Oakland catcher Derek Norris broke his left toe Tuesday, according to beat reporter Kate Longworth.
Insight: Norris is batting .232 this season with eight homers and 26 RBI so his fantasy value is minimal and starter John Jaso is already sidelined. With no other obvious options we await to see if he'll play through the injury or the team digs deep to find another catcher.
Coco Crisp, CF8/20/2013 7:18:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp (wrist) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Mariners, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
Insight: Crisp made his first start since Aug. 11 Monday night, but he's out Tuesday against lefty Joe Saunders because his wrist bothers him more when he's batting right-handed.
Coco Crisp, CF8/19/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp (wrist) is back in the starting lineup Monday night against Seattle.
Insight: Crisp has only had one at-bat since Aug. 11. He produced most of his numbers in April and has been slipping ever since.
Bartolo Colon, SPCold8/17/2013 7:14:00 PM
Description: The A's have placed starter Bartolo Colon on the 15-day DL.
Insight: Colon has been bothered by a strained left groin. That might explain why he's struggled over his past two outings (0-2, 13.50 ERA).
Coco Crisp, CF8/17/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp is still out with a wrist injury. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Instead, Yoenis Cespedes will get the start in center field Saturday against Cleveland. Crisp, who is hitting .249 in 95 games this season, last played on Tuesday.
Sonny Gray, SP8/15/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: Oakland starter Sonny Gray captured his first big league victory Thursday versus Houston.
Insight: In just his second career start, Gray allowed only four hits in eight scoreless innings. He fanned nine of the 29 batters he faced. The 23-year-old's next start is scheduled for Tuesday against Seattle.
Nate Freiman, 1B8/15/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: A's first baseman Nate Freiman jolted four hits Thursday in a win over Houston.
Insight: Thursday was the first four-hit game of Freiman's career. The 26-year-old rookie has held his own in the big leagues so far. In 61 games, he's batting .286 with three homers and 22 RBI.
Jarrod Parker, SP8/15/2013 10:03:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA over his last three starts. He threw 8 1/3 innings and allowed one run on eight hits Wednesday against Houston to drop his ERA to 3.87.
Insight: Parker's HR/9 is up 0.61 from his rookie year, but he has only allowed 0.77 HR/9 over his last 105 2/3 innings and has a 2.73 ERA in that span.
Coco Crisp, CF8/14/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp (wrist) will be limited to pinch-running for the next day or two after having a cortisone shot in his left wrist, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Crisp will miss his third straight game Wednesday due to wrist discomfort and likely won't start until Saturday at the earliest. He's hitting just .205 since the All-Star break.
Coco Crisp, CF8/14/2013 5:14:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp (wrist) is still out of the lineup, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Crisp will miss his third straight game Wednesday due to wrist discomfort. He's batting .249 with 58 runs scored, 16 steals and 10 homers, but most of his work was done pre-All-Star game. He's posted a .205 batting average since then.
Brett Anderson, SP8/13/2013 8:17:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brett Anderson (foot) is expected to return to the team as a reliever when he's ready to come off the disabled list, according to Steve Kroner of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Kroner said that manager Bob Melvin "strongly suggested" Tuesday that Anderson would be used out of the bullpen. The lefty has been out since late April due to a sprained right ankle that developed into a right foot stress fracture.
Coco Crisp, CF8/13/2013 4:55:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is not in Tuesday's starting lineup against Toronto due to a sore left wrist.
Insight: Crisp left Sunday's game with the injury. He's batting .249 with 58 runs scored, 16 steals and 10 homers, but most of his work was done pre-All-Star game. He's posted a .205 batting average since then.
Chris Young, CF8/13/2013 11:34:00 AM
Description: Oakland outfielder Chris Young homered on Monday and should get another chance to start Tuesday (Coco Crisp injury) as he's got a favorable matchup against Houston's Jordan Lyles.
Insight: He's batting an ugly .196 this season, but might be worth a flier as he's 5-for-9 (.556) against Lyles.
Alberto Callaspo, 2B8/12/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: A's second baseman Alberto Callaspo broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the ninth inning Monday versus the Blue Jays.
Insight: Callaspo finished the game with two hits. He's batting .292 with four RBI since joining the A's at the trade deadline.
Dan Straily, SP8/12/2013 2:55:00 PM
Description: Oakland starter Dan Straily will come away with a no-decision on Monday afternoon, but he pitched much better than he had in his previous three outings.
Insight: Straily allowed six hits and one earned run over 7 1/3 innings at Toronto. He's not a big strikeout guy and has limited fantasy value.
Coco Crisp, CF8/12/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is not in Monday's starting lineup against Toronto due to a sore left wrist.
Insight: Crisp left Sunday's game and was unlikely to play on Monday. He's batting .249 with 58 runs scored, 16 steals and 10 homers, but most of his work was done pre-All-Star game. He's posted a .205 batting average since then.
Coco Crisp, CF8/12/2013 11:17:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is doubtful for Monday's game against Toronto with a sore left wrist, according to beat writer Susan Slusser.

Coco Crisp, CFCold8/11/2013 10:12:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp has hit just .133 in 15 career at-bats versus R.A. Dickey of the Blue Jays.
Insight: Crisp has hit .290 in August after batting a pathetic .186 in July, but he shouldn't be started Sunday with Dickey on the mound.
Sonny Gray, RP8/10/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: In his first major league start Saturday, Athletics prospect Sonny Gray gave up two earned runs (four total) on four hits in six innings versus Toronto. He struck out five and walked three.
Insight: Gray, the No. 18 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, had a 3.42 ERA and a 118/39 K/BB in 118 1/3 innings with Triple-A Sacramento and is likely to remain in the rotation. The 23-year-old should be owned in all 12-team leagues.
Josh Reddick, RFHot8/10/2013 7:02:00 PM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick hit two more home runs and drove in three Saturday after swatting three homers Friday night.
Insight: The power surge has really come out of nowhere, as Reddick was hitless in his last 20 at-bats and had just five home runs all season prior to Friday's game.
Josh Reddick, RFHot8/10/2013 2:08:00 PM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick had a monster night Friday against the Blue Jays and apparently woke up still smokin'.
Insight: Reddick swatted three homers and drove in five of Oakland's 14 runs on Friday and homered to right in his first at-bat on Saturday. For those keeping track that's four homers in his last five plate appearances.
Jed Lowrie, SS8/9/2013 10:32:00 PM
Description: A's shortstop Jed Lowrie ripped four hits Friday in a blowout win over Toronto.
Insight: He finished with four RBI, his most in a game since April 15th against the Astros. Lowrie has been one of the league's most productive offensive shortstops in 2013. Friday's four-hit effort raised his average from .288 to .295.
Josh Reddick, RF8/9/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: A's right fielder Josh Reddick had a monster night Friday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Reddick swatted three homers and drove in five of Oakland's 14 runs. Friday was his first multi-home run game since September 27th versus Texas. Prior to tonight, Reddick had been hitless in his last 19 at bats.
Alberto Callaspo, 2B8/9/2013 10:09:00 AM
Description: Oakland infielder Alberto Callaspo is questionable for Friday's game against Toronto, though he said he expects to play.
Insight: He bruised his forearm on a play at the plate, but it wasn't anything serious. Callaspo has been splitting reps with Eric Sogard at second base since being acquired from the Angels at this year's trade deadline.

Description: Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson's home run Wednesday afternoon against the Reds was his first since the All-Star break.

Bartolo Colon, SP8/7/2013 7:29:00 PM
Description: Oakland starter Bartolo Colon had one of his worst outings of the season Wednesday against the Reds (2 2/3 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 BB).
Insight: Colon (14-4, 2.75 ERA) can usually throw in the mid-90s but today his fastball never reached higher than 91. Manager Bob Melvin said a stomach bug may have had something to do with his struggles. Wednesday's loss ended a 15-game quality start streak for the veteran.
Alberto Callaspo, 3B8/7/2013 2:11:00 PM
Description: A's third baseman Alberto Callaspo left Wednesday afternoon's game with Cincinnati after hurting his left arm on a play at the plate.
Insight: With little power, no speed and a mediocre batting average, Callaspo has been a bad fantasy option, even for AL-only owners. This injury shouldn't change any fantasy lineups down the road.
Derek Norris, C8/7/2013 11:53:00 AM
Description: Oakland catcher Derek Norris is not in Wednesday afternoon's starting lineup. Stephen Vogt will get the start.
Insight: Norris is batting just .217 this season with eight homers and 25 RBI so his fantasy value is minimal. Vogt hit well at Triple-A (.324, 13 HR, 58 RBI in 75 games), but has done very little in limited at-bats with the A's.
Seth Smith, OF8/7/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Oakland DH Seth Smith is a career 6-for-14 (.429) with three home runs and a 1.571 OPS against Reds starter Homer Bailey.
Insight: Since leaving the thin Colorado air, Smith has done little to excite fantasy owners. He's batting .243 with a .728 OPS in 214 games with the A's, but this is a favorable matchup.
Dan Straily, SPCold8/6/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: Oakland pitcher Dan Straily failed to get out of the fifth inning Tuesday for the third straight start.
Insight: Straily allowed six hits and two earned runs over four innings at Cincinnati and has a 4.41 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP this season. Straily has been a disaster with men on base, stranding just 66.6 percent of his baserunners this season.
Bartolo Colon, SPHot8/5/2013 2:15:00 PM
Description: According to a Ken Rosenthal report, Bartolo Colon will not be hit with any further suspension.

Yoenis Cespedes, LFHot8/3/2013 4:42:00 PM
Description: Athletics left fielder Yoenis Cespedes homered in his first at-bat against Matt Garza on Saturday, his second home run in five days - he's warming up.
Insight: This, after he went 25 games without reaching the seats. He's 9-for-24 (.375) over his last five games plus one at-bats. Time to hop on board the Cespedes train. Last year he had a huge second half with 14 HR and a .909 OPS in his final 75 games.
Seth Smith, OF8/3/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Oakland DH Seth Smith is a career 2-for-15 (.133) against Texas starter Matt Garza with five strikeouts.
Insight: Since leaving the thin Colorado air, Smith has done little to excite fantasy owners. He's batting .244 with a .729 OPS in 213 games with the A's. Look elsewhere for outfield help.
Coco Crisp, CFCold8/3/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp is just 2-for-17 (.118) against Texas right-hander Matt Garza.
Insight: Crisp started the season on fire (.283, 5 HR, 12 RBI, 24 runs, 8 SB, .943 OPS in April), but hasn't batted above .250 over the past two months. This matchup isn't likely to get him started.
Josh Donaldson, 3BCold8/2/2013 10:44:00 AM
Description: After an All-Star type first half, Oakland 3B Josh Donaldson has fallen apart in the 13 games since the "Summer Classic."
Insight: Talk about a cold streak. He's batting .196 with an ugly .557 OPS and 14 strikeouts. Remove Donaldson from your lineup until he finds his swing.
Josh Reddick, RF8/2/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick (headaches) is probable for Friday's game against Texas.
Insight: Reddick has experienced a massive decline in numbers this season, especially in the power department. He hit 32 homers last year, but has just five this season with an ugly .636 OPS.
Bartolo Colon, SPHot7/30/2013 8:42:00 PM
Description: According to Yahoo! Sports, the players involved with Biogenesis who already have been suspended for positive tests in the past -- Bartolo Colon, Yasmani Grandal and Melky Cabrera -- are likely to avoid another suspension.
Insight: Colon is the big fantasy name here. The 40-year-old has gone 14-3 with a 2.54 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP this season after being suspended for 50 games last year.
Josh Donaldson, 3BCold7/28/2013 9:50:00 PM
Description: Oakland 3B Josh Donaldson is 0-for-16 with 10 strikeouts over his last five games.

Jed Lowrie, SS7/28/2013 9:47:00 PM
Description: Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie reached base four times Sunday against the Angels.
Insight: Lowrie went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, two runs and two walks. He's inching back towards .300 after dropping to .283 following a 7-for-48 (.146) slump.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/28/2013 9:45:00 PM
Description: Athletics left fielder Yoenis Cespedes drove in four runs Sunday.
Insight: He went 3-for-5 against the Angels after going 0-for-9 over the last two games. His average has been stuck in the low .200s all season.
Jed Lowrie, SS7/24/2013 12:22:00 PM
Description: Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie has been a .316 hitter with an .828 OPS while batting in the cleanup role in 2013.
Insight: Lowrie isn't the classic power hitter, but gets the job done. Still, we'd like to see Yoenis Cespedes batting cleanup and probably so would Josh Donaldson's owners who bats No. 3.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/24/2013 12:16:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes didn't start Monday or Tuesday (he did pinch hit on Tuesday), but is back in the starting lineup for Wednesday afternoon's contest.

Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/23/2013 4:26:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes didn't play Monday against the Astros and was listed as questionable for Tuesday's game against Houston, but is not in the starting lineup.

Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/22/2013 6:37:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes won't play Monday against the Astros.
Insight: He's been battling a wrist issue. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says Cespedes hit off a tee on Monday and that if he's feeling up to it, he could take part in tomorrow's batting practice. He should be back later in the week.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/21/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: Athletics left fielder Yoenis Cespedes missed all three games in Oakland's first series of the second half against the Angels due to a sore wrist, but John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports that Cespedes could take batting practice Monday.
Insight: Cespedes won the Home Run Derby Monday and then had a few days off, but he felt soreness in his wrist during batting practice prior to Friday's game. He took dry swings Sunday, and if he's feeling good Monday he'll take BP. His status for this week's series against the Astros is still up in the air.
Bartolo Colon, SPHot7/21/2013 7:33:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Bartolo Colon continues to amaze -- the 40-year-old fired a four-hit shutout Sunday against the Angels.

The right-hander has walked just 1.06 batters per nine innings this season and is 13-3 with a 2.52 ERA. Josh Donaldson, 3B7/21/2013 1:36:00 PM
Description: A's third baseman Josh Donaldson is a .500 career hitter against Los Angeles righthander Jerome Williams.
Insight: Donaldson is hitting .306 against the Angels this season, which is the same as his season average. He's had an outstanding year so far and we're expecting him to have another big day Sunday in the series finale.
Coco Crisp, CFCold7/21/2013 1:32:00 PM
Description: Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp usually doesn't do well when he has to face Angels starter Jerome Williams.
Insight: Crisp has collected two hits in 13 previous encounters with Williams. A recent 3-for-21 slump has dropped his average from .267 to .259.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/20/2013 6:43:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes won't be in the lineup Saturday against the Angels.
Insight: Cespedes, who is dealing with a sore wrist, didn't play on Friday night either. Despite an impressive performance at the Home Run Derby a few nights ago, Cespedes is hitting just .225 for the season.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/19/2013 11:00:00 PM
Description: 2013 Home Run Derby winner Yoenis Cespedes was scratched from the Oakland Athletics' lineup Friday.
Insight: Cespedes is dealing with a sore wrist, which might be related to the Derby.
Brett Anderson, SP7/19/2013 9:50:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brett Anderson (foot) will join the team next week in Houston to throw a bullpen session, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Anderson has been out since late April due to a sprained right ankle that developed into a right foot stress fracture. He said he has been throwing all his pitches during his rehab work. When he's able to return to the rotation, he's worth owning in all formats.
Jarrod Parker, SP7/19/2013 9:42:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker threw a bullpen session without feeling any hamstring discomfort Friday, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group. Parker suffered a hamstring injury on June 29 but was able to make two starts after that.
Insight: Due to the All-Star break, he'll end up with nine days off between his last start on July 12 and his start next week at Houston. That the right-hander finished the first half with a 3.95 ERA has to be considered a success after he posted a 6.86 ERA and a 30/22 K/BB over his first 40 2/3 innings this season. He has a 2.33 ERA and a 47/16 K/BB over his last 73 1/3 innings.
Coco Crisp, CFCold7/19/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp is just 6-for-45 (.133) against Angels starter Jered Weaver.
Insight: Crisp (.263, 9 HR, 35 RBI, 48 runs, 14 SB, .759 OPS) is a key contributor in the A's offense, but struggled heading into the break after a hot start. This matchup doesn't figure to get him going again.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF7/15/2013 10:57:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes came out on top in Monday night's Home Run Derby at Citi Field.
Insight: Absolutely incredible. Cespedes, the only player in the Derby not to be invited to the All-Star Game, finished with a combined 32 home runs, tying him with David Ortiz and Robinson Cano for third-most in Derby history. His last homer was a towering 455-foot blast to deep center field. Washington outfielder Bryce Harper came in second with 16 homers in the first two rounds and another eight in the finals. Cespedes came into the contest homerless in his last 71 major league at bats.
Josh Donaldson, 3B7/14/2013 9:39:00 PM
Description: Josh Donaldson drove in all three of the A's runs Sunday in an extra innings win over the Red Sox.
Insight: Two of them came on a home run in the seventh with the other coming on a single with two outs in the 11th inning. He'll head to the break with a .310 average, 16 HR and 61 RBI in 93 games. Somehow, those numbers weren't good enough to make the All-Star team.
Grant Balfour, RP7/14/2013 4:34:00 PM
Description: A's ninth inning man Grant Balfour has been elected to the AL All-Star team.
Insight: Balfour was named as a replacement for Bartolo Colon, who is pitching Sunday against the Red Sox. The righthander has converted a team-record 43 saves in a row dating back to last season.
A.J. Griffin, SP7/14/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter A.J. Griffin tossed eight scoreless innings Saturday against the Boston Red Sox.
Insight: Griffin has three scoreless outings of at least seven innings since the start of June, but he hasn't been quality in his other five starts in that stretch.
Josh Reddick, RF7/10/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick is 1-for-10 with four strikeouts versus Pittsburgh starter Francisco Liriano.
Insight: Reddick had a nice week, batting .333 with a homer and seven RBI over the past four games, but has experienced a massive decline in numbers overall this season, especially in the power department. He'll need a monster second half to even get close to last year's 32 home run total.
Sonny Gray, RP7/9/2013 8:18:00 PM
Description: Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics will call up pitching prospect Sonny Gray, but he's expected to pitch in relief.
Insight: Gray has a 2.81 ERA and a 107/34 K/BB in 102 1/3 innings with Triple-A Sacramento this season. The former first-round pick likely would be joining the rotation if Dan Straily didn't throw seven one-hit scoreless innings last week in a win over the Cubs. For now, Gray will have to wait for Straily's struggles to return or for someone to go down with an injury.
Grant Balfour, RPHot7/8/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: Oakland closer Grant Balfour set a team record by recording his 41st save in a row Monday against the Pirates.
Insight: The old record was set by Dennis Eckersley between 1991-92. Balfour's ERA during the streak is 1.93. The 35-year-old from Australia might be this season's biggest All-Star snub.
Grant Green, 2B7/8/2013 4:03:00 PM
Description: Oakland infielder Grant Green was just called up and will get his first major league start on Monday at second base.
Insight: Green batted a solid .318 with 11 HR and 49 RBI for Sacramento (PCL). Even given the offensive nature of the Pacific Coast League, he could become a viable fantasy second baseman if he continues to produce at that level. He'll start in a platoon situation with Eric Sogard, but could easily win the full-time gig, if he stays hot.
Josh Reddick, RF7/7/2013 9:10:00 PM
Description: Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick is 20-for-68 (.294) with four doubles, two triples, two homers and 14 RBI over his last 19 games.
Insight: Reddick hit his fourth homer of the season and drove in four runs Sunday against the Royals. The outfielder has experienced a massive decline in numbers this season, especially in the power department. He has gone just 9-for-66 (.136) on flyballs, and his HR/FB is only 5.9 percent.
Jed Lowrie, SS7/7/2013 8:57:00 PM
Description: Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI Sunday against the Royals.
Insight: Lowrie is hitting .301 with six homers and 36 RBI this season. He has one of the best line-drive rates in baseball and his strikeout rate is just 12.5 percent, so he has a good chance at keeping his average around or over .300.
Josh Donaldson, 3B7/6/2013 7:41:00 PM
Description: On the same day he was snubbed by All-Star voters, Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson delivered his 15th home run of the season Saturday in a loss to Kansas City.
Insight: That's a new career-high. Donaldson is certainly having an All-Star season with 57 RBI and a .317 batting average in 86 games. Unfortunately, he happens to play the same position as Miguel Cabrera (.360, 27 HR, 88 RBI) and Manny Machado (.315, 6 HR, 42 RBI). It's possible he could get invited to the game as an alternate if somebody gets hurt.
Jed Lowrie, SS7/6/2013 12:12:00 PM
Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie will miss Saturday's contest with a right calf injury after fouling a ball off it in Friday night's game.
Insight: Lowrie is batting a solid .297 with five homers, 34 RBI and 37 runs scored. Adam Rosales figures to get the start, but has no fantasy value.
John Jaso, C7/6/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: Athletics catcher John Jaso (hand) is an impressive 7-for-17 (.412) with a home run and a 1.147 OPS versus Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Jaso missed 10 days while dealing with a hand injury and is just 1-for-6 since his return, but this is a favorable matchup worth a flier. The backstop is hitting .272 with two homers, 19 RBI and a 38/29 K/BB this season.
Sonny Gray, RP7/3/2013 7:49:00 PM
Description: The Athletics will leave Sonny Gray in the minors for now rather than calling him up for a spot start Thursday.
Insight: Dan Straily will get the start. Gray, the 18th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, has gone 7-5 with a 3.02 ERA and a 98/32 K/BB in 95 1/3 innings with Triple-A Sacramento this season and needs to be monitored in all leagues.
Dan Straily, SP7/3/2013 7:48:00 PM
Description: Oakland pitcher Dan Straily will be recalled to start Thursday's game against the Cubs.
Insight: The team is pushing Jarrod Parker (hamstring) back to Saturday. Straily is 4-2 with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 66 2/3 innings with the A's this season.
Jarrod Parker, SPHot7/3/2013 7:45:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker's next start has been pushed back to Saturday against the Royals, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group. Dan Straily will start Thursday.
Insight: Parker suffered a right hamstring injury during last Saturday's start, and still felt discomfort during a bullpen session Tuesday.
Coco Crisp, CF7/3/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp is just 1-for-13 (.077) against Cubs starter Matt Garza.
Insight: Crisp has been dealing with back spasms since Sunday's game, but got through Tuesday game without any additional problems. Crisp (.274, 9 HR, 30 RBI, 46 runs, 14 SB, .815 OPS) is a key contributor in the A's seventh-ranked offense (4.71 runs per game), but this is an unfavorable matchup for a guy with a questionable back. Avoid him today.
Seth Smith, OFCold7/3/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Oakland DH Seth Smith is a career 1-for-11 (.091) against Cubs right-hander Matt Garza with five strikeouts.
Insight: Smith has been a solid DH for the A's, who despite going 3-for-15 over the past four games is batting .278 with six homers, 32 RBI and 34 runs, but Wednesday is an unfavorable matchup to be avoided.
Coco Crisp, CF7/2/2013 4:28:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp, who suffered a back injury Sunday versus St. Louis and was doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, is in the starting lineup.
Insight: He left Sunday's game in the fourth inning with back spasms and Chris Young came off the bench to play center field. Crisp (.274, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 46 runs, 13 SB, .820 OPS) is a key factor in the A's eighth-ranked offense (4.67 runs per game).
Coco Crisp, CF7/2/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp suffered a back injury Sunday versus St. Louis and is doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs
Insight: He left the game in the fourth inning with back spasms and Chris Young came off the bench to play center field. Crisp's absence would certainly be felt as he's one of the main catalysts for this offense (.274, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 46 runs, 13 SB, .820 OPS).
Bartolo Colon, SPHot7/1/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Bartolo Colon went 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA in June and has won eight straight starts.
Insight: Colon posted a 1.37 ERA and a 1.68 BB/9 during his winning streak. He has surprisingly bounced back from his 50-game suspension last year and is 11-2 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP.
Coco Crisp, CF6/30/2013 6:10:00 PM
Description: A's center fielder Coco Crisp suffered an injury Sunday versus St. Louis. SOURCE: San Jose Mercury News
Insight: He left the game in the fourth inning with Chris Young coming off the bench to play center field. Crisp went 0-for-2 with a line out and a ground out before leaving. There hasn't been any word yet on what kind of injury Crisp (.274, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 13 SB) suffered.
Jarrod Parker, SPHot6/30/2013 2:48:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, according to Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Parker suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's start, but the team is yet to find out if it is just a cramp or something more serious. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said the team will know more about his status once he throws the bullpen.
Coco Crisp, CFCold6/30/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp is ice cold over his last eight games, but he should be in all lineups Sunday with Jake Westbrook on the mound for the Cardinals.
Insight: Crisp has gone 8-for-15 (.533) with a double against Westbrook. Ignore his .129 average (4-for-31) over his last eight games and get him in the lineup.
Yoenis Cespedes, LFCold6/29/2013 10:06:00 PM
Description: Oakland outfielder Yoenis Cespedes went 0-for-4 with three K Saturday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Cespedes has had some big games this month, including three two-homer games, but he just hasn't been able to string together a hot streak. He's 3-for-25 (.120) with nine strikeouts in his last six games.
Jarrod Parker, SPHot6/29/2013 6:34:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker had to leave Saturday's game due to right hamstring tightness, according to Kate Longworth of CSN Bay Area.
Insight: Parker fell to the ground after throwing a pitch in the fourth inning and looked to be in serious pain. Hopefully he just has a cramp related to the hot weather in Oakland Saturday.
Brandon Moss, 1B6/29/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts against Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright.
Insight: Moss has been hitting the long ball, with seven homers and a .885 OPS over the past four weeks, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
A.J. Griffin, SP6/26/2013 6:40:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter A.J. Griffin threw his first career shutout Wednesday afternoon against the Reds.
Insight: Griffin (6-6, 3.56 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) walked two and gave up just two hits while striking out seven. The right-hander has stranded 75.3 percent of his baserunners this season.
John Jaso, C6/26/2013 3:16:00 PM
Description: Athletics catcher John Jaso (hand) is not in Wednesday's starting lineup and could be out until Friday, according to A's beat writer Susan Slusser.
Insight: Jaso has been dealing with a hand injury since last Thursday. The backstop is hitting .276 with two homers, 19 RBI and a 37/27 K/BB this season. Stephen Vogt will start behind the plate on Wednesday, but has yet to show he has any fantasy value at the big league level.
Coco Crisp, CF6/26/2013 2:04:00 PM
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp is not in the lineup Wednesday against Cincinnati.
Insight: No word of any injury, to the oft-injured outfielder, so at this time we think it's just a day off. He's struggled of late, going 2-for-24 over the past six games.
Brandon Inge, 3B6/26/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: Pittsburgh infielder Brandon Inge homered on Tuesday, but isn't likely to start on Wednesday because of an unfavorable matchup with Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Inge is just 4-for-22 (.182) against King Felix over his career. The Pirates have used Inge primarily as a right-handed pinch hitter, but he did get a start on Tuesday and laced a double and a home run.
Seth Smith, OFHot6/26/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Oakland DH Seth Smith "owns" Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey, batting .545 with three home runs and a 2.000 OPS in 11 at-bats.
Insight: Smith is currently on an eight-game winning streak, batting .394 over the span. Hot hitter plus favorable matchup equals must start.
John Jaso, C6/25/2013 6:03:00 PM
Description: Athletics catcher John Jaso (hand) was scratched from the lineup Tuesday, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
Insight: Jaso has been dealing with a left palm abrasion since last Thursday. The backstop is hitting .276 with two homers, 19 RBI and a 37/27 K/BB this season.
Dan Straily, SP6/23/2013 10:20:00 PM
Description: After allowing 14 hits and eight earned runs over eight innings in his last two starts, Oakland pitcher Dan Straily has been sent to Triple-A Sacramento.
Insight: According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Straily is expected to be recalled when the Athletics need a fifth starter again, which won't come until the second week of July because Oakland has three off days in the next eight days.
Brandon Moss, 1B6/23/2013 10:09:00 PM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss had two hits, including a solo home run, in four at-bats Sunday at Seattle.
Insight: Moss batted .148 in 88 at-bats from May 1 to June 11, but he's hitting .286 with five homers over his last 49 at-bats. He has good power, but he puts up a lot of o-fers.
Brandon Moss, 1B6/21/2013 2:05:00 PM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss is a subpar 1-for-9 with four strikeouts against Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: Moss has raised his average from to .241 with a solid two-week run in which he's batted .324 with four homers. This matchup, however, isn't a good one.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF6/21/2013 1:56:00 PM
Description: Oakland outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is 5-for-12 with a pair of home runs and a 1.500 OPS against Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: Cespedes has 13 home runs, but none over the past two weeks (10 games). His batting average in now a liability for fantasy owners (.228), so if he's not hitting home runs and not stealing bases (just two this year versus 16 last year), his value is greatly reduced and even this nice matchup might have to be avoided.
Josh Donaldson, 3B6/20/2013 8:07:00 PM
Description: Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson had three singles in five at-bats Thursday against the Rangers.
Insight: Donaldson went 6-for-39 (.154) with 12 strikeouts and a .491 OPS over his previous 10 games and his average fell from .329 to .304 in that span. He's back up to .309 after Thursday's game.
Yoenis Cespedes, LFCold6/20/2013 8:07:00 PM
Description: Oakland outfielder Yoenis Cespedes struck out three times and went 0-for-4 Thursday against the Rangers.
Insight: Cespedes looked to be snapping out of a season-long funk when he went 8-for-18 (.444) with four homers and six RBI from June 3-6, but he is 6-for-40 (.150) with 15 strikeouts since then.
Jed Lowrie, SS6/20/2013 7:42:00 PM
Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with one RBI Thursday versus Texas.
Insight: Lowrie came in hitting .149 (7-for-47) over his last 12 games due to a .167 BABIP in that span. The shortstop's strikeout rate is still way down from last season, and his line-drive rate is a career-high 27.3 percent, which is a good recipe for hitting .300.
Chris Young, CFCold6/20/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Oakland outfielder Chris Young is had a big night on Wednesday, but his Thursday matchup should be avoided. He's hitless in six at-bats with four strikeouts.
Insight: He's batting an ugly .192 this season even after yesterday's two-hit game and this is a bad matchup. Avoid.
Manny Ramirez, DH6/19/2013 8:46:00 PM
Description: Manny Ramirez is hoping to return to the major leagues. SOURCE: Jon Paul Morosi, Fox Sports
Insight: Keep dreaming, Manny. Ramirez has spent the last three months playing with the EDA Rhinos of the Chinese Professional League. His numbers have been good (.352, 8 HR, 43 RBI) but obviously playing in Taiwan is much different than playing in the major leagues. We'd he shocked if anyone's interested.
Coco Crisp, CF6/19/2013 3:52:00 PM
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Rangers.
Insight: Crisp missed time last week due to a heel injury, but there's no word on whether this absence is related.
Jarrod Parker, SPHot6/19/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Oakland starter Jarrod Parker is 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA and a .177 batting average against over his last eight starts.
Insight: Parker owned a 1-5 record and a 7.34 ERA over his first seven outings this season, but he has fired eight straight quality starts and allowed just 33 hits and 15 earned runs in that span.
Brandon Moss, 1BHot6/19/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss hit his 13th homer of the season Tuesday at Texas.
Insight: Moss has raised his average from .222 to .240 by going 10-for-28 (.357) over his last six games. He had four home runs, seven RBI and six runs in that span, but also struck out 10 times.
Dan Straily, SP6/18/2013 10:03:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Dan Straily gave up eight hits (two HR) and six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings Monday at Texas.
Insight: After being swept at home in four games by the Toronto Blue Jays, the Rangers predictably came ready to play Monday. Straily has a 3.56 FIP and a 1.14 WHIP, but his strand rate is just 58 percent and his ERA is 4.97.
Josh Reddick, RF6/16/2013 8:27:00 PM
Description: Josh Reddick anchored the Oakland offense with four hits Sunday against the Mariners.
Insight: Reddick has regressed in a huge way this season, batting just .211 with three homers in his first 147 at bats. Sunday was definitely a step in the right direction but it's going to take more than that for Reddick to earn back our trust.
Sonny Gray, RP6/16/2013 4:17:00 PM
Description: Oakland Athletics minor league pitcher Sonny Gray has a 2.48 ERA and a 77/26 K/BB in 76 1/3 innings with Triple-A Sacramento this season.
Insight: That's an impressive ERA for the heavy-hitting PCL. Gray, the 18th overall pick in the 2011 draft, is Oakland's No. 1 pitching prospect at the moment and No. 5 overall prospect, per MLB.com. The Athletics' minor league system has been successful in producing useful starters over the last few seasons, so Gray should be added if he earns a callup.
Brett Anderson, SP6/15/2013 5:26:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brett Anderson (foot) will be out until August at the earliest, according to the Oakland Tribune.
Insight: Anderson has been out since late April due to a sprained right ankle that developed into a right foot stress fracture. He will be in a walking boot for another four weeks. Dan Straily, who is 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA over his last five starts, will get an extended run in the rotation.
Coco Crisp, CF6/15/2013 3:22:00 PM
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp (heel) is back in the lineup for Saturday's game against Seattle.
Insight: Crisp developed a heel injury during Tuesday's game ans missed three contests. Crisp homered twice earlier this week and has a modest four-game hitting streak. He's batting .297 with eight homers and 24 RBI.
Josh Donaldson, 3B6/15/2013 3:18:00 PM

Jed Lowrie, SS6/15/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie is 1-for-12 with six Ks versus Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Lowrie is putting together a fine season, batting .292 with 27 runs scored and 24 RBI, but this matchup must be avoided.
Josh Donaldson, 3B6/14/2013 9:27:00 PM
Description: A's third baseman Josh Donaldson says he expects to be back in the lineup on Saturday. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He missed Friday's game with a sore hamstring. Donaldson has been one of fantasy's biggest overachievers this season, collecting a .310 batting average and 42 RBI through his first 67 games.

Description: Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson will get the night off Friday to rest his sore hamstring. SOURCE: Athletics on Twitter
Insight: Donaldson (.310, 9 HR, 42 RBI) started feeling tightness during Thursday's 18-inning game against the Yankees. It's not a major concern and he should be back before the end of the weekend.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF6/14/2013 6:55:00 PM
Description: A's left fielder Yoenis Cespedes is back in the lineup for Friday's series opener versus Seattle. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle

Insight: Donaldson's pace has slowed after a torrid start this season, but he's still batting .310 with nine homers, 42 RBI and 34 runs scored even after his recent 4-for-29 stretch.
Jarrod Parker, SPHot6/13/2013 9:29:00 PM
Description: Oakland starter Jarrod Parker let up just two runs in eight innings Thursday versus the Yankees.
Insight: The game lasted 18 innings so Parker didn't factor in the decision. He's undefeated in his last four starts with a 1.91 ERA in 28 1/3 innings.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF6/13/2013 1:11:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup Thursday for the second straight day.
Insight: Cespedes left Tuesday's game in the second inning with a tight left hamstring. The Athletics said the outfielder was removed for "precautionary measures," according to Jane Lee of MLB.com, so it doesn't look like a DL stint is imminent.
Coco Crisp, CFHot6/13/2013 1:10:00 PM
Description: Athletics CF Coco Crisp (heel) is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Yankees for a second straight game, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Insight: Lowrie is off to a great start, batting .344 with three homers, 14 RBI and 16 runs scored. Hopefully, this won't be a long-term problem.
Brett Anderson, SP4/28/2013 2:17:00 PM
Description: A's starter Brett Anderson is expected to miss his next start after the right ankle bothered him during his last outing, according to Casey Pratt of CSN Bay Area.
Insight: Anderson got knocked around on Wednesday against Boston, going just four innings and yielding eight hits and six runs.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF4/28/2013 2:08:00 PM
Description: As expected, Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hand) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. He'll play left and bat cleanup.
Insight: Cespedes suffered a strained muscle in his left hand on a slide into second base on April 12. He's hitting .200 with three homers and seven RBI in 11 games and add's his bat to a lineup that is already averaging 5.16 runs-per-game (third-best in the majors).
Josh Donaldson, 3BHot4/27/2013 7:58:00 PM
Description: A's third baseman Josh Donaldson crushed four hits Saturday in a loss to Baltimore.
Insight: Hmm, maybe we were wrong about Donaldson. This guy is raking right now (11-for-19 over his last six games). He's overachieved this season and we're not entirely sure if Donaldson (.318, 2 HR, 16 RBI) can keep this up. For the time being, he's certainly worth having on your fantasy roster.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF4/25/2013 4:35:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hand) will begin his minor league rehab stint Thursday night, according to Casey Pratt of CSNBayArea.com.

Chris Young, CF4/24/2013 8:00:00 PM
Description: A's right fielder Chris Young swatted a pair of homers Wednesday in a loss to Boston.
Insight: Young (.174, 4 HR, 14 RBI) wasn't expected to have a starting job this season but an injury to Yoenis Cespedes has allowed him to see regular at bats. He had been in an 0-for-14 drought prior to Wednesday's series finale.

Josh Reddick, RF4/24/2013 1:03:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick is not in Wednesday's game against Boston.
Insight: Reddick hurt his wrist earlier this season which could account for his slow start (.164, 1 HR, 12 RBI), but this is just a day off - not injury related.
Seth Smith, OFHot4/23/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Oakland DH Seth Smith went 1-for-4 Tuesday, but his one hit was a three-run homer. He also walked and scored two runs.
Insight: Smith has six doubles, two homers, 10 RBIs and a 10/8 K/BB in 53 at-bats. Smith only hit .157 in 70 at-bats against lefties last season, but he is 8-for-13 (.615) against them this year and is batting .377 overall.
John Jaso, C4/23/2013 10:20:00 PM
Description: Athletics catcher John Jaso snapped out of a 0-for-14 slump with a three-hit game Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Jaso had a double and two RBIs in the game and also walked once. He's hitting .258 with one homer, nine RBIs and six walks through 17 games.
Bartolo Colon, SP4/23/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Athletics righty Bartolo Colon blanked Boston Thursday on just three hits over seven innings to improve to 3-0. The game was called after seven innings due to rain.
Insight: All four of Colon's starts this season have been quality outings (at least 6.0 innings, three earned runs or less), and he has a 17/1 K/BB in 26 innings. The right-hander gives up a lot of contact, but he gets outs and has proven to be a reliable fantasy arm over the past two seasons.
Brett Anderson, SP4/22/2013 9:03:00 PM
Description: A's starter Brett Anderson is expected to miss his next start after the right ankle bothered him during his last outing, according to Casey Pratt of CSN Bay Area.
Insight: Anderson got knocked around on Wednesday against Boston, going just four innings and yielding eight hits and six runs.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF4/22/2013 1:20:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hand) is on pace to return when his 15 days on the disabled list are up on April 28th.
Insight: Cespedes suffered a strained muscle in his left hand on a slide into second base on April 12. He is expected to make a couple of rehab starts at the end of this week and be ready to go as soon as he's eligible.
Yoenis Cespedes, LF4/21/2013 1:29:00 PM
Description: Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hand) is expected to hit off a tee Monday and take batting practice this week. He could be playing in rehab games by the end of the week, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Cespedes hasn't played since suffering a strained muscle in his left hand on a slide into second base on April 12. However, he expects to play as soon as he is eligible to come off the DL.
Brett Anderson, SP4/21/2013 12:30:00 PM
Description: According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Athletics starter Brett Anderson's bullpen session went "very well" and it "seems likely" he will make his scheduled start Wednesday.
Insight: Anderson suffered a sprained ankle in the first inning Friday night after allowing four runs to the Rays, but he felt better Saturday. Dan Straily would likely take his place if he can't go.
Coco Crisp, CFHot4/21/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp is 8-for-20 with a homer, two RBIs and four walks against Tampa Bay starter Roberto Hernandez.
Insight: Crisp is off to a great start, hitting .323 with five homers, four steals and 18 runs scored, and Sunday presents a great matchup. Fantasy owners shouldn't worry that Crisp has only faced Hernandez when he was known as Fausto Carmona; he may have a different name, but he has the same mediocre stuff.
Jarrod Parker, RP4/20/2013 10:43:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Jarrod Parker gave up one run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings Saturday against the Rays but dropped to 0-3 as Oakland was shut out.
Insight: It's a step in the right direction for Parker, who allowed 23 hits, eight walks and 14 earned runs over his first 11 2/3 innings this year.
Brett Anderson, SP4/20/2013 6:19:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brett Anderson (ankle) could make his next start, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Anderson had a disastrous Friday night. The Rays rocked him for four runs and four hits in just an inning of action Friday night, and he left after that due to an ankle sprain. However, he felt better Saturday, increasing his chances of making his next start. The team will make an official ruling Sunday. Dan Straily is the next man up if Anderson can't go.
Coco Crisp, CFHot4/19/2013 10:34:00 PM
Description: Coco Crisp's hot start continued Friday night in Tampa Bay. The A's outfielder teed off with two hits in four at bats.
Insight: One of the blasts was Crisp's fifth home run of the year. That's pretty remarkable when you consider that Crisp managed 11 homers all of last season. Crisp's .759 slugging percentage (fourth in the major leagues) is 300 points higher than his career average (.411).
Brett Anderson, SP4/19/2013 8:46:00 PM
Description: A's lefty Brett Anderson was removed from Friday night's start against Tampa Bay after suffering a sprained right ankle.
Insight: The Rays rocked him for four runs and four hits in just an inning of action. The team may have to make a roster move if Anderson is forced to miss his next start Wednesday against Boston.
Josh Reddick, RFCold4/19/2013 10:01:00 AM
Description: Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick is hitless in seven at-bats against Tampa Bay right-hander Alex Cobb.
Insight: Reddick hurt his wrist which could account for his slow start (.119, 1 HR, 7 RBI). This matchup isn't likely to get him started.
Derek Norris, CHot4/17/2013 9:27:00 PM
Description: Oakland catcher Derek Norris was forced to leave Wednesday's game early after a foul ball hit him in his mask.
Insight: X-rays came back negative and it looks as though Norris will be fine to play Friday against Tampa Bay. He's had a strong season offensively (.385 AVG through 11 games).
