Mike Moustakas, 3BHot7/25/2014 11:27:00 PM

Insight: He went 1-for-4 with a homer, his 13th of the season, against the Indians. Moustakas has batted .268 with nine homers and an OPS north of .830 in his last 36 games after a putrid start to the season.

Eric Hosmer, 1B7/24/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer exited Wednesday's game with "decreased grip strength in his hand," and is doubtful for Thursday's game against Cleveland.

Mike Moustakas, 3BHot7/24/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is a career .389 hitter (7-for-18) versus Cleveland starter Corey Kluber.
Insight: Moustakas has batted .313 for the week as he closes in on the Mendoza Line (.199). He might be an inexpensive play worthy of a one-day shot Thursday.

Salvador Perez, C7/21/2014 10:43:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez (groin) was not in the lineup Sunday, but is probable for Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Perez is dealing with minor groin soreness. He boasted a career .301 batting average heading into the season, but is batting just .282 even after a big month of June.
Yordano Ventura, SP7/20/2014 5:11:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura had a rough afternoon Sunday at Boston.
Insight: Ventura walked four, didn't strike out a batter and gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander has struck out just 29 batters in 50 1/3 innings (5.19 K/9) since his elbow scare on May 26. He had a 9.26 K/9 in his first 57 1/3 innings this season.
Alex Gordon, LF7/20/2014 12:46:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon has batted just .118 against Red Sox starter Jon Lester.
Insight: Gordon is 2-for-17 with seven Ks against Lester. He's also batting .234 against left-handers this season, so avoid him Sunday.
Salvador Perez, C7/20/2014 12:11:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez (groin) is not in the lineup Sunday, but he expects to be back Monday, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Perez is dealing with minor groin soreness. He had a terrific June (.347, 4 2B, 5 HR, 16 RBI) but has been subpar in the other three months. In July, Perez has batted .259 with one extra-base hit.
Alex Gordon, LF7/13/2014 12:57:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon (wrist) is not in Sunday's lineup.

Salvador Perez, C7/13/2014 12:51:00 PM
Description: UPDATE: Perez is not in the lineup Sunday. Royals catcher Salvador Perez has batted .467 with seven doubles and a homer against Detroit starter Justin Verlander.
Insight: Perez already has 11 homers this season after hitting just 13 last year and although he has just 36 RBI and 38 runs on the year, he's driven in 24 and scored 24 in his last 40 games.
Billy Butler, DH7/13/2014 12:41:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler has been one of Tigers starter Justin Verlander's biggest nemeses.
Insight: Butler is 33-for-76 (.434) with five doubles and two homers lifetime against Verlander. The DH is still hitting just .272 with three home runs and a .678 OPS this season, but he's a must-start anytime he's facing Verlander.
Alcides Escobar, SS7/12/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar has put together a solid season for fantasy owners, but should be avoided Saturday afternoon, as he's 1-for-23 (.043) versus Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello.
Insight: Escobar has already matched his 2013 stolen base total (22) and is batting .283 with 41 runs scored and 28 RBI. His .709 OPS won't kill you either.
Norichika Aoki, RF7/11/2014 4:00:00 PM
Description: Royals outfielder Norichika Aoki was activated from the 15-day disabled list and will lead off and play right field Friday night against Detroit.
Insight: Aoki (.263, 0 HR, 14 RBI) has recovered from a groin strain, but likely won't try to steal bases at first. Unfortunately without that speed, he doesn't present much of a value to fantasy owners.
Salvador Perez, CCold7/11/2014 10:19:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez is hitless in 12 at-bats against Detroit hurler Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: Perez (.282, 11 HR, 35 RBI) is having a bad week going 5-for-26 so combined with a poor matchup should be avoided for Friday.
Mike Moustakas, 3B7/10/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is questionable for Thursday's game against Detroit due to flu-like symptoms.
Insight: Moustakas is still batting below the Mendoza Line (.193) and fantasy owners have likely already given up on him, but he did hit home run No. 10 this week.
Alex Gordon, LF7/10/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is just 2-for-17 with nine strikeouts versus Detroit starter Drew Smyly.

Jason Vargas, SP7/9/2014 6:21:00 PM
Description: Royals trainer Nick Kenney said the team is prepared to be without starter Jason Vargas (emergency appendectomy) for three to four weeks, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Vargas has gone 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 125 innings this season. Bruce Chen will take his spot in the rotation, though newly signed veteran Joe Saunders may also be an option.
Lorenzo Cain, CFHot7/8/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain went 4-for-4 with a triple, a walk a steal and two runs Tuesday at Tampa Bay.
Insight: Cain is batting .322 with 11 steals this season, though he has very little power and has benefited from a .397 BABIP.
Billy Butler, DH7/8/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a career .643 hitter (9-for-14) against Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Butler still isn't hitting with any power (2 HR) and he's even struggling with his average over the past 10 games hitting just .195 over that span. Its a great matchup, but the struggling hitter may not be able to take advantage.
Alex Gordon, LFCold7/7/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI Monday at Tampa Bay.
Insight: Gordon (.269, 9 HR, 44 RBI) had just three hits in his previous 40 at-bats (.075). His inclusion on the 2014 AL All-Star team is as much about his defense as it is his hitting. According to FanGraphs, he leads baseball with a UZR of 23.9.
James Shields, SP 7/7/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter James Shields threw his best start since June 8 Monday at Tampa Bay.
Insight: Shields struck out 10, walked one and allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings to improve to 9-4. He had a 5.66 ERA, a 1.62 WHIP and 33 Ks in 49 1/3 innings over his previous eight starts.
James Shields, SPCold7/7/2014 11:47:00 AM
Description: Kansas City starter James Shields has very good season-long numbers (8-4, 3.93 ERA), but he's struggled in his last three outings.
Insight: Shields has yielded four earned runs or more against Seattle, Minnesota and the Dodgers and faces a Tampa Bay team that has won 10 of its last 12 and averaged 5.08 runs per contest over that span.
Mike Moustakas, 3B7/6/2014 4:18:00 PM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas hit his 10th home run of the season and now has 35 RBI.
Insight: Moustakas is still batting below the Mendoza Line (.195) and fantasy owners have likely already given up on him.
Alex Gordon, LF7/6/2014 10:05:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon will not be in Sunday's starting lineup against Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians.
Insight: Just a routine day off for Gordon in an unfavorable matchup. He is just 4-for-22 (.182) against Kluber, so this is a well-timed day of rest.
Mike Moustakas, 3B 7/4/2014 10:21:00 PM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Friday at Cleveland.
Insight: Moustakas has nine home runs this season, but he's batting just .192 with a .624 OPS. The third baseman has the fly-ball rate of a power-hitter (47%), but he doesn't hit the ball in the air with authority enough and is only hitting .189 on balls in play.
Yordano Ventura, SP7/4/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura lasted 8 1/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits in a win over Cleveland Friday night.
Insight: Since his elbow scare on May 26, Ventura has posted a 2.52 ERA in 39 1/3 innings, but his K/9 in that span was just 4.82 compared to 9.26 in 57 1/3 innings before the issue.
Omar Infante, 2B 7/4/2014 6:29:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Omar Infante was scratched from Friday's lineup due to tightness in his lower back, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Infante has batted .252 with five homers, 41 RBI, 30 runs, three steals and a .663 OPS this season and is only an option in AL-only leagues.
Jason Vargas, SP7/2/2014 5:26:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas gave up six runs on nine hits over four innings against the Angels in his last start of June, but he rebounded with seven scoreless innings Wednesday against the Twins.
Insight: Vargas (8-3, 3.32 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) has allowed five-plus runs in four of his 18 starts this season but two or less in 13 of them.
Lorenzo Cain, CF 7/2/2014 12:25:00 PM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain has racked up seven hits in 12 at-bats against Twins starter Kevin Correia, good for a .583 average.
Insight: Cain has gone 0-for-9 his last two games after going 19-for-48 (.396) with five doubles, a triple, a homer and eight RBI from June 16-29, but he's still hitting .309 with three homers, 35 RBI, seven steals and a .776 OPS this season.
Lorenzo Cain, CFHot6/29/2014 5:54:00 PM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain's four hits Sunday brought his average up to .322.
Insight: Cain has gone 19-for-48 (.396) with five doubles, a triple, a homer and eight RBI over his last 12 games. He's benefited from a .392 BABIP, so look for his average to drop below .300 eventually.
Jarrod Dyson, CF6/24/2014 9:44:00 AM
Description: Royals center fielder Jarrod Dyson went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two steals Monday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Dyson (.305, 12 SB) has taken a starting job from Norichika Aoki and bumped Lorenzo Cain to right field. He has tremendous stolen base potential, having swiped 76 bags since 2012 despite getting just 610 at-bats in that span.
Jarrod Dyson, CF6/21/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Jarrod Dyson will again bat in the leadoff spot on Saturday with Norichika Aoki sidelined by injury.
Insight: Dyson (.296, 0 HR, 7 RBI, 14 runs, 10 SB) is having a better than expected season to date.
Justin Maxwell, CF6/21/2014 11:52:00 AM
Description: Royals outfielder Justin Maxwell has been recalled to take the place of injured Norichika Aoki and will jump right into the starting lineup batting sixth and playing right field.
Insight: Maxwell hasn't done anything to warrant attention from fantasy owners, batting just .138 in 29 at-bats this season.
Norichika Aoki, RF6/21/2014 11:49:00 AM
Description: Royals outfielder Norichika Aoki has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. SOURCE: Jsh Vernier, Fox Sports Kansas City
Insight: Aoki (.263, 0 HR, 14 RBI) left Tuesday night's game with a groin injury and has played sparingly since then. Justin Maxwell (.133, 0 HR, 2 RBI) will take over his vacant roster spot.
Alex Gordon, LF6/20/2014 10:43:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon was a late scratch for Thursday afternoon's game due to the flu and is questionable for friday's game with Seattle.
Insight: Gordon is batting .288 with eight homers, 39 RBI and 40 runs this season to lead a suddenly explosive Royals offense. Jarrod Dyson would get the start if Gordon is still sidelined.
Danny Duffy, SPHot6/19/2014 5:48:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy has allowed five runs on 14 hits with a 23/6 K/BB in 25 2/3 innings this month.
Insight: Duffy (4-6, 2.80 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings Thursday at Detroit. The 25-year-old former top-100 prospect is starting to live up to his potential after being derailed by Tommy John surgery in 2012.
Alex Gordon, LF6/19/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon was a late scratch for Thursday afternoon's game due to the flu.
Insight: Gordon is batting .288 with eight homers, 39 RBI and 40 runs this season to lead a suddenly explosive Royals offense. Jarrod Dyson got the start.
Danny Duffy, SPHot6/19/2014 11:46:00 AM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy doesn't have a winning record this season (4-5), but he's pitching very well of late.
Insight: Duffy has posted a 1.45 ERA, 0.857 WHIP and 18 Ks in 18.2 IP in his last three starts, winning two of them. With the Royals on fire, winning 10 straight, Duffy is an excellent option on Thursday.
Norichika Aoki, RF6/19/2014 11:25:00 AM
Description: Royals outfielder Norichika Aoki is back in the lineup for Thursday afternoon's game with Detroit.
Insight: Aoki (.261, 0 HR, 14 RBI) left Tuesday night's game with a groin injury and missed Wednesday's contest.

Norichika Aoki, RF6/18/2014 10:49:00 AM
Description: The Royals will be without Norichika Aoki Wednesday against the Tigers. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: It's no surprise after Aoki (.261, 0 HR, 14 RBI) left last night's game with a groin injury. Lorenzo Cain (.318, 2 HR, 29 RBI) will get the nod at right field.
Omar Infante, 2BHot6/17/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Omar Infante went 1-for-3 with two walks and three RBI Tuesday night at Detroit.
Insight: Infante has gone 12-for-33 (.364) with a homer and 10 RBI over his last eight games to raise his average from .228 to .250.
Yordano Ventura, SP6/17/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura won his third straight start Tuesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Ventura struck out four batters and allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings. He seems to have put the elbow discomfort he dealt with at the end of May behind him.
Alex Gordon, LFHot6/17/2014 10:25:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer and two RBI Tuesday at Detroit.
Insight: He came in with excellent numbers against Max Scherzer and added to them in the second and fifth innings Tuesday. The Royals' offense has suddenly turned on the juice and has averaged 7.4 runs per game during a nine-game winning streak. Gordon has batted .350 with seven homers, 22 RBI and 22 runs over his last 28 games.
Norichika Aoki, RF6/17/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Kansas City right fielder Norichika Aoki left Tuesday's game with groin discomfort.
Insight: Aoki went 1-for-2 with a run prior to exiting and was replaced in right field by Lorenzo Cain, who was supposed to be getting the night off. Aoki has a .261 average and zero homers this season and doesn't do enough in the run or steal categories to make up for it.
Salvador Perez, CHot6/17/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez is a carweer .381 (8-for-21) with two homers and a 1.143 OPS against Tigers ace Max Scherzer.
Insight: Perez (.281, 7 HR, 23 RBI) left in the seventh inning with leg cramps but not before extending his hitting streak to ten games. He should be okay for Tuesday's game and in all starting lineups as he's raised his average 21 points during his hot streak.
Alex Gordon, LFHot6/17/2014 10:04:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is a career .387 hitter (12-for-31) with a pair of homers against Detroit ace Max Scherzer.

Alex Gordon, LF6/16/2014 10:48:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon shredded the Tigers for three hits on Monday night.

Lorenzo Cain, CF6/16/2014 10:41:00 PM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain smashed three hits in Monday's win over the Tigers.
Insight: Tonight was Cain's sixth game of the season with at least three hits. He's been a pleasant surprise for the Royals, hitting .310 across 168 at bats. Cain would probably be owned in almost every league if he had a little more power (2 HR this season).
Omar Infante, 2BHot6/16/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Omar Infante had a huge night Monday against the Tigers.
Insight: Infante went 2-for-4 with four RBI including a two-run homer off Justin Verlander in the sixth inning. He's gone 11-for-30 over his last seven games to raise his average from .228 to .249.
Salvador Perez, CHot6/16/2014 9:49:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez exited Monday's game with calf cramps. SOURCE: Dave Hogg, Fox Sports Detroit
Insight: Perez (.281, 7 HR, 23 RBI) left in the seventh inning but not before extending his hitting streak to ten games. He should be okay for tomorrow night's ball game.
Billy Butler, DHHot6/16/2014 10:13:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a career .432 hitter (32-for-74) against Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Butler still isn't hitting with any power, but he is batting .351 over his last two weeks (11 games). The combination of Butler and Salvador Perez could get it done against Verlander on Monday night.
Salvador Perez, CHot6/16/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is 12-for-27 (.444) with eight ectra-base hits and 10 RBI versus Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: After a slow start, Perez has picked it up batting .311 with an .841 OPS over the past four weeks. Hot hitter plus favorable matchup equals must start.
Billy Butler, DH 6/14/2014 5:22:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Saturday against the White Sox and has driven in seven runs in his last four games.
Insight: Butler has just two homers all year. He's been getting more lift on the ball in June than he did the first two months of the year, but Saturday's homer was his first since May 2.
Mike Moustakas, 3BHot6/14/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Saturday at Chicago.
Insight: Moustakas has gone 7-for-18 with two homers, five RBI and five runs his last five games. We're going to need to see a lot more than that to recommend using the 25-year-old, who has been consistently terrible at the major league level.
Danny Duffy, SP6/14/2014 5:17:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy struck out nine batters in seven shutout innings Saturday against the White Sox.
Insight: In eight starts this season, Duffy has gone 3-4 with a 2.96 ERA and a 31/19 K/BB in 45 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old will have a tough matchup at Detroit his next time out.
Alex Gordon, LF6/13/2014 11:45:00 AM
Description: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon is a lifetime .130 hitter (3-for-23) versus left-hander Jose Quintana.
Insight: Gordon is posting another solid, though unspectacular season - .283, 7 HR, 35 RBI, 35 runs, .816 OPS, but this matchup should be avoided.
Eric Hosmer, 1B6/13/2014 11:44:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is a career .083 hitter (2-for-24) with seven strikeouts versus White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.
Insight: Hosmer's numbers are way down this season, batting .259 with three homers, 29 RBI and a .668 OPS. Avoid this matchup.
Mike Moustakas, 3B6/13/2014 11:40:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is a career .421 hitter (8-for-19) with two homers and a 1.239 OPS against White Sox starter Jose Quintana.
Insight: Moustakas has gone 5-for-14 (.357) over the past seven days. He's still well below the Mendoza line and most days isn't fantasy worthy, but he might be worth a flier on Friday.
Alcides Escobar, SSHot6/11/2014 9:09:00 PM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar went 3-for-3 Wednesday in a win over the Indians.
Insight: He's been in cruise control all month (.455 AVG in 33 at bats). Make sure Escobar (.287, 2 HR, 22 RBI) is in your lineup for Friday's series opener against the White Sox.
Yordano Ventura, SP6/11/2014 9:04:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura was in the zone Wednesday against Cleveland.
Insight: Ventura held the Indians to one run in seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. He's followed up a four-game losing streak by going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last two starts.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold6/11/2014 9:32:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas went 1-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs Tuesday against Cleveland.
Insight: Moustakas has gone 5-for-30 (.167) since he was recalled, which is better than the .152 average he had before his demotion but still not very good.
Alex Gordon, LFHot6/11/2014 9:30:00 AM
Description: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon has hit .370 with five doubles, six homers, 19 RBI, 17 runs and 16 walks in his last 22 games.
Insight: Gordon went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, his seventh of the season, Tuesday against the Indians.
Eric Hosmer, 1B6/11/2014 9:28:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI Tuesday against the Indians.
Insight: Hosmer appears to be following the same path he took last season, when he hit .318 with 16 homers, 58 RBI and an .874 OPS in his last 98 games after batting .274 with one home run and 21 RBI through June 12. This season, he had one home run through June 6 but hit two in the past three games.

Description: Royals DH Billy Butler has struggled against Indians starter Corey Kluber throughout his career, batting just .111 (2-for-18) with six strikeouts.
Insight: Butler's bat hasn't shown up this season. He's batting just .249 with one home run and 21 RBI and his OPS is almost 200 points below his career number (.812).
Salvador Perez, C6/9/2014 3:48:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is not in Monday's starting lineup, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Just a routine day off. Perez (.271, 6 HR, 20 RBI) has batted .325 over the past two weeks to raise his average 12 points. He's still 25 points below his career average. Brett Hayes will make the start, but with an .086 batting average holds no fantasy value.
James Shields, SP6/8/2014 9:28:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter James Shields allowed one unearned run in six innings Sunday against New York.
Insight: He also had eight strikeouts, his most since May 13th against Colorado. Shields (7-3, 3.44 ERA) is undefeated in his last seven starts.

Insight: Gordon has hit .388 with five homers, 18 RBI, 16 runs and 15 walks in his last 20 games and is 6-for-8 with two doubles and a walk against Kuroda. Make sure he's in your lineup Sunday.

Bruce Chen, RP6/6/2014 11:26:00 AM
Description: Royals left-hander Bruce Chen (lower back tightness) made his first rehab appearance with Double-A Northwest Arkansas Tuesday and threw three innings. Source: Dick Kaegel, MLB.com.
Insight: The 36-year-old Chen hadn't pitched in six weeks, but threw 46 pitches (35 strikes) while allowing eight hits and two runs, both solo homers. He struck out three and didn't walk anyone. When Chen's rehab is complete, the Royals will have a difficult decsion to make regarding his role given the way Danny Duffy has been pitching of late.
Greg Holland, RPHot6/5/2014 10:40:00 PM
Description: Royals closer Greg Holland struck out the side Thursday against the Cardinals to earn his 17th save of the season.
Insight: Holland is now first in the American League in saves and he has a 1.52 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP and a 37/6 K/BB in 23 2/3 innings. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 11 2/3 innings.

Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura (elbow) returned to the rotation Thursday against the Cardinals and allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings
Insight: Ventura was diagnosed with valgus extension overload in his elbow after his last start, but he was back to throwing 97-100 mph Thursday.
Omar Infante, 2B6/4/2014 11:44:00 AM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante is a career .462 hitter (6-for-13) against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.
Insight: Not many hitters enjoy prolonged success against Wainwright, but Infante has handled the powerful right-hander well in 13 career at bats, with five singles and a double against him. Infante has been average, at best, this season and has only one stolen base through 38 games but could be a smart start tonight.
Alex Gordon, LFHot6/3/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon homered for the second straight game Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Gordon was hitting .250 with one home run and a .655 OPS on May 17, but he's been on an absolute tear ever since. In his last 16 games, he's gone 21-for-57 (.368) with five home runs, 17 RBI, 12 runs, 10 walks and two steals.

Norichika Aoki, RF6/2/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: Kansas City right fielder Norichika Aoki is a career .500 hitter (7-for-14) against Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller.
Insight: Like most of the Royals, Aoki isn't hitting for much power (.644 OPS), but he has scored 28 runs and stolen seven bases.
Mike Moustakas, 3B6/1/2014 10:46:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas' minor-league exile didn't last long. Kansas City summoned him Sunday.
Insight: Danny Valencia went on the disabled list with a wrist injury. Moustakas hit .355 with a homer and a .960 OPS in eight games with Triple-A Omaha, but he'll return to a .152 average, four homers and a .543 OPS in the majors. He's yet to prove he's more than a Quadruple-A player.
Billy Butler, DH6/1/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler has had plenty of success against Toronto's Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Butler has had a season to forget so far, hitting .254 with just 10 extra-base hits, but he's batted .306 against southpaws and is 22-for-63 (.349) with three home runs against Buehrle.
Lorenzo Cain, CFHot5/31/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain had three hits, including a homer, and four RBI Friday at Toronto, but is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Cain is batting .339 after collecting 12 hits in his last 25 at-bats (.480). His average is boosted by a .413 BABIP, so enjoy it while it lasts. The team will use left-hand hitter Jarrod Dyson against the young right-hander, Aaron Brooks, who will make his first career start.
Salvador Perez, C5/31/2014 10:20:00 AM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is not in Saturday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: The 24-year-old has been a relative disappointment this season, hitting 37 points below his career average (.296) and hasn't had a multi-hit game in a week. He has been dealing with a thumb injury which could be the reason. Brett Hayes (.067) gets the start but has no fantasy value.
Lorenzo Cain, CFHot5/30/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain had three hits, including a homer, and four RBI Friday at Toronto.
Insight: Cain is batting .339 after collecting 12 hits in his last 25 at-bats (.480). His average is boosted by a .413 BABIP, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Insight: All three were singles. Butler has just 10 extra-base hits (one homer) in 221 plate appearances this season and he's batting .249.
Yordano Ventura, SP5/30/2014 5:33:00 PM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura (elbow) played catch Friday and will throw a light bullpen session Saturday, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Pitching coach Dave Eiland said Ventura "feels fine." If he gets through Saturday's session, he'll throw a full bullpen on Monday. He was diagnosed with a valgus stress overload following his last start, but he may have to miss only one start.
Danny Valencia, 3B5/30/2014 4:05:00 PM
Description: Royals infielder Danny Valencia (sprained left hand) is back in the lineup for Friday night's series opener with Toronto.
Insight: Valencia became the Royals everyday third baseman with the demotion of Mike Moustakas. He's batting .279 with a homer and seven RBI in 61 at-bats. He'll bat eighth.
Alcides Escobar, SS5/30/2014 9:54:00 AM
Description: Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar is just 1-for-12 (.083) against Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ.
Insight: Thursday Escobar knocked out his first three-hit game of the season. However, he's had a rough go of it lately batting .229 over the past dozen games and Friday isn't likely to be a productive day.
Alcides Escobar, SS5/29/2014 10:40:00 PM
Description: Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar ripped three hits Thursday in a ten-inning win over the Blue Jays.
Insight: Tonight was Escobar's first three-hit game of the season. He's had a rough go of it lately (he was four for his last 23 coming into tonight's game) but perhaps Thursday will be the start of a turnaround for the 27-year-old.
Alcides Escobar, SSCold5/29/2014 3:56:00 PM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar has forgotten how to hit over the past two weeks, batting just .196 over that span.
Insight: Escobar hasn't been able to get on much so his stolen base totals have not risen and that's a big portion of his fantasy value. Time to sit him until he finds his swing.
Omar Infante, 2B5/29/2014 10:55:00 AM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante is a career .516 hitter (16-for-31) with two homers against Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Some guys just know how to handle the knuckleball and Infante (.262, 2 HR, 20 RBI) is one of them.
Yordano Ventura, SP5/27/2014 8:26:00 PM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura has a "valgus stress overload," according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
Insight: The syndrome is a condition in which the repetitive stresses of throwing lead to deterioration in the elbow joint. It could be bad news for Ventura's future, which would be a shame because the 22-year-old's stuff is so electric.
Kyle Zimmer, SP5/27/2014 5:01:00 PM
Description: Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer won't play catch for 6-8 weeks due to a lat strain, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: He's Kansas City's top prospect but hasn't pitched at all in 2014 after recording a 4.32 ERA and a 140/36 K/BB in 108 2/3 innings in the minors last season. We don't expect to see the 2012 fifth-overall pick in the majors this season.
Yordano Ventura, SP5/27/2014 4:46:00 PM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura's MRI showed no structural damage to the elbow, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: Ventura exited in the third inning on Monday after allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 2/3. He averages 96 mph with his fastball, but was throwing just 91 when facing his last batter of the night. He's expected to miss just one or two starts.
Danny Valencia, 3B5/27/2014 9:36:00 AM
Description: Royals infielder Danny Valencia is expected to miss a few additional days due to a sprained left hand.
Insight: Valencia became the Royals everyday third baseman with the demotion of Mike Moustakas. He's batting .279 with a homer and seven RBI in 61 at-bats.
Yordano Ventura, SPCold5/26/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura will have an MRI on his elbow on Tuesday, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Ventura exited in the third inning on Monday after allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 2/3. He averages 96 mph with his fastball but was throwing just 91 when facing his last batter of the night. The official reason the team gave for Ventura's exit is "lateral elbow discomfort."
Yordano Ventura, SPCold5/26/2014 9:23:00 PM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura left Monday's start with a possible injury, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Ventura exited in the third inning with Kansas City's trainer after allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 2/3. He averages 96 mph with his fastball but was throwing just 91 when facing his last batter of the night.
Yordano Ventura, SPCold5/26/2014 8:59:00 AM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura has struggled of late, going 0-3 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over his last three starts.
Insight: The future is still bright for the 22-year-old. He's struck out 56 batters in 54 2/3 IP and his overall ERA is 2.80. He's just not a great play on Monday, even if it is the Astros.
Danny Valencia, 3B5/26/2014 6:45:00 AM
Description: Royals infielder Danny Valencia missed Sunday's game against the LA Angels due to a sprained left hand.
Insight: Valencia, who has become the Royals everyday first baseman with the demotion of Mike Moustakas, could miss a couple of days, but at least there are no broken bones. He's batting .279 with a homer and seven RBI in 61 at-bats.
Norichika Aoki, RF5/26/2014 6:40:00 AM
Description: Kansas City right fielder Norichika Aoki didn't start Sunday against the Angels, but did end up getting into the game as a pinch runner.
Insight: He dealing with a sore elbow, so the pinch-runner role doesn't necessarily mean he's coming back tomorrow. Lorenzo Cain gets most of the starts in right field for the Royals when Aoki is sidelined.
Norichika Aoki, RF5/25/2014 2:27:00 PM
Description: Kansas City right fielder Norichika Aoki won't be in the lineup Sunday against the Angels. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: He must have tweaked his elbow during Saturday's 13-inning marathon. Lorenzo Cain (.313, 1 HR, 14 RBI) will start in right field for the Royals.
Eric Hosmer, 1B5/25/2014 9:34:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer notched four hits in Saturday's extra inning victory over Los Angeles.
Insight: All four of his hits were singles. Hosmer had been just one for his last 12 heading into Saturday. His .289 average in 197 at bats leads the team.
Salvador Perez, C5/24/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is back in the lineup after missing the previous three games with an injured hand.
Insight: He's hitting fifth for the first time this season. The 24-year-old has been a relative disappointment this season, hitting 35 points below his career average (.296).
Salvador Perez, C5/23/2014 6:08:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez won't be in the lineup Friday against Los Angeles. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: Perez's hand is still bothering him. If the injury lingers for much longer, he could be placed on the disabled list. Brett Hayes, who remains hitless on the season (0-for-22), will grab the start behind the plate.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold5/22/2014 6:04:00 PM
Description: The Royals have sent struggling third baseman Mike Moustakas down to Triple-A Omaha.
Insight: It was only a matter of a time. Moustakas' production has fallen off a cliff this season and it looks like he's lost all his confidence. The 25-year-old can be safely dropped in all formats.
Salvador Perez, C5/22/2014 10:46:00 AM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is questionable for Friday's game against the LA Angels.
Insight: Perez is dealing with a sore right thumb/hand. He was just 1-for-12 in his last three games.
Eric Hosmer, 1B5/21/2014 1:58:00 PM
Description: Kansas City 1B Eric Hosmer can't be thrilled to be facing White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana on Wednesday.
Insight: He's hitting .095 against him with seven punchouts in 21 at bats. Hopefully Hosmer (.290, 1 HR, 21 RBI) isn't your only option at first base today.
Alex Gordon, LF5/21/2014 1:54:00 PM
Description: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon has underachieved against White Sox starter Jose Quintana.
Insight: Gordon checks in with a .150 batting average against the left-hander. Even with eight RBI in his last three games, we wouldn't recommend starting Gordon (.271, 3 HR, 24 RBI) Wednesday versus Quintana.
Billy Butler, DH5/21/2014 1:51:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler shouldn't be trusted Wednesday against White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.
Insight: Butler is hitting a mere .167 against him in 18 lifetime at bats. We wouldn't be surprised if Butler's hitting streak ended tonight at four games.
Mike Moustakas, 3B5/21/2014 1:46:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas has a nice matchup waiting for him Wednesday against Chicago.
Insight: He's hitting .421 against today's starting pitcher, Jose Quintana. It's pretty hard to justify owning Moustakas (.152, 4 HR, 17 RBI) at this point but if you do still have him, today would be a nice day to have him in your lineup.
Jason Vargas, SP5/19/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jason Vargas had a 5-0 lead after one inning Monday against the White Sox, but he failed to make it out of the fifth inning.
Insight: Vargas allowed eight hits, three homers and seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. The left-hander has had trouble with home runs throughout his career and has given up 10 in 64 2/3 innings this year. He'll take a 3.76 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP into his next start Sunday at Los Angeles, the team he pitched for last season.
Billy Butler, DH5/18/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: Kansas City designated hitter Billy Butler was on his game Sunday versus the Orioles.
Insight: He contributed three hits including his seventh double of the season. Butler's average is up to .240. That's still underwhelming by his standards but it's an improvement from earlier this week when he was hitting .226.
Alex Gordon, LF5/18/2014 5:26:00 PM
Description: Alex Gordon led the charge Sunday in a win against Baltimore.
Insight: Gordon (.268, 3 HR, 22 RBI) finished the day with four hits, three runs scored, a pair of homers and six RBI. The Royals left fielder was started in 86 percent of Yahoo leagues so most owners were able to take advantage of his huge performance.
Alcides Escobar, SS5/18/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar is having a solid season, but he's been putrid against Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: Escobar has gone 4-for-25 (.160) against Jimenez and is unlikely to improve upon his .282 average Sunday.
Eric Hosmer, 1B5/18/2014 9:58:00 AM
Description: Royals 1B Eric Hosmer is 9-for-23 (.391) with two home runs and six walks against Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: Hosmer has just one homer all season but is hitting .294 with 15 doubles. He'll get Jimenez on Sunday.
Danny Duffy, SP5/17/2014 9:49:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was perfect for 6 2/3 innings before allowing a single to Adam Jones.
Insight: Duffy finished with seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts and zero walks. The young left-hander has Tommy John surgery in 2012 and made just five appearances last year, but he's allowed just two runs on six hits in 17 innings since he took over for the injured Bruce Chen in the rotation.
Salvador Perez, CHot5/17/2014 3:06:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is not in the Royals starting lineup for Saturday.
Insight: Perez has batted .364 over the past two week to raise his average to .269. He's never finished below .292 in any season, so we expect his batting average to continue to rise.
Billy Butler, DH5/15/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a lifetime .533 hitter (8-for-15) with two homers and a 1.763 OPS versus Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Butler's disappointing numbers to date (.239, 1 HR, 14 RBI) make him a touch selection at this point in time.
Greg Holland, RP5/14/2014 9:20:00 PM
Description: Royals closer Greg Holland has 10 saves in 11 chances and a 2.40 ERA this season.
Insight: He had a terrific 103/18 K/BB in 67 innings last year and he's followed that up with 22 strikeouts and three walks in 15 innings this season.
Jason Vargas, SP 5/14/2014 5:24:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has allowed eight hits and two earned runs in 13 2/3 innings over his last two starts after giving up 21 hits and 12 earned runs over 11 1/3 his previous two.
Insight: Vargas limited the Rockies to two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings Wednesday to earn his fourth victory. He has walked just 1.65 batters per nine innings this season, a career low.
Salvador Perez, CHot5/13/2014 11:07:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez has gone 20-for-56 (.357) with three homers since his massive April slump.
Insight: Perez went 5-for-55 (.091) from April 11-25 and is still digging his way out of the hole. After going 2-for-4 with a solo homer Tuesday against the Rockies, the backstop is hitting .267 with four homers on the year.
James Shields, SPHot5/13/2014 11:04:00 PM
Description: Royals starter James Shields ran his record to 5-3 with a win over the Rockies on Tuesday.
Insight: Shields held the high-powered Rockies to one run on five hits and struck out eight with zero walks in seven innings. He has a 2.54 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP this season. The right-hander had a strong year in 2013 as well but didn't win his fifth game until July 26.
Omar Infante, 2B5/13/2014 4:40:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante (back) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 7,
Insight: He's batting .267 with 19 RBI and 13 runs scored which puts him well up the list of second basemen.
Omar Infante, 2B5/12/2014 11:32:00 AM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante didn't return on Saturday or Sunday and is questionable for Tuesday's game against Colorado.
Insight: He's sat out the last four games because of back stiffness. Manager Ned Yost is hopeful Infante won't require a stint on the disabled list. He's batting .267 with 19 RBI and 13 runs scored which puts him well up the list of second basemen.
Alcides Escobar, SS5/11/2014 7:54:00 PM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar connected on his first career grand slam Sunday in a win over Seattle.
Insight: The home run was just his second of the season. He's hitting .250 in 40 at bats this month. Escobar hit .298 with ten RBI in the month of April.
Omar Infante, 2B5/8/2014 8:19:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante isn't expected to return until Saturday at the earliest. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: He's sat out the last two games because of back stiffness. Manager Ned Yost is hopeful Infante won't require a stint on the disabled list. Among second basemen, only Arizona's Aaron Hill has produced more RBI than Infante this season (19 in 120 at bats).
Omar Infante, 2B5/8/2014 7:11:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Omar Infante won't be available Thursday against Seattle. SOURCE: Kansas City Star
Insight: He's dealing with a back injury. Utility man Danny Valencia (.273, 1 HR, 3 RBI) will start at second base for the second straight night.
Danny Valencia, 3B5/7/2014 8:22:00 PM
Description: Royals infielder Danny Valencia bashed three hits Wednesday in an 8-0 win over San Diego.
Insight: Wednesday marked Valencia's second multi-hit effort of the season. Valencia could be in line to see more at bats if Mike Moustakas (.152, 4 HR, 14 RBI) continues to struggle.
Norichika Aoki, RF5/7/2014 8:15:00 PM
Description: Royals right fielder Norichika Aoki collected three hits Wednesday in a win against San Diego.
Insight: It's his third three-hit game of the season. All three of the hits were singles. Aoki doesn't hit for much power (homerless in 127 at bats this season) and his OPS this year (.677) is well below his career average (.746). Despite the good game on Wednesday, Aoki isn't a particularly exciting fantasy option.
Eric Hosmer, 1BHot5/7/2014 8:07:00 PM
Description: Royals 1B Eric Hosmer smashed three hits in Wednesday's win over San Diego.
Insight: Hosmer had an excellent series, going 7-for-15 with seven RBI during the team's three-game visit to Petco Park. His batting average is now up to .306 for the season. That's tied for 14th-best in the American League.
James Shields, SPHot5/7/2014 8:03:00 PM
Description: Royals starter James Shields was on fire Wednesday against the Padres.
Insight: Shields (4-3, 2.70 ERA) scattered seven hits over seven shutout innings. He's now 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA over his last five appearances. Take away an eight-run outing against the Tigers last week and that ERA dips to 1.05.
Yordano Ventura, SPHot5/6/2014 2:25:00 PM
Description: Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura struck out 10 batters in six innings Monday at San Diego.
Insight: Ventura has 41 Ks, 11 BBs and a 2.00 ERA in 36 innings this season. He's the AL Rookie of the Year frontrunner.
Eric Hosmer, 1B5/6/2014 2:13:00 PM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer hit his first homer of the season Monday at San Diego.
Insight: Hosmer went 3-for-6 with three RBI in the game and is hitting .296 with a .754 OPS this season. The first baseman also went all of April last year without hitting a homer and had just one in his first 61 games but finished with 16 in his last 98.
Mike Moustakas, 3B5/5/2014 6:48:00 PM
Description: Royals 3B Mike Moustakas is getting the night off Monday against the Padres. SOURCE: Bob Scanlan, Padres play-by-play
Insight: What do you still have Moustakas for anyway? The guy is hitting .151 with 20 strikeouts in 93 at bats. No matter how bad your team is at third base right now, Moustakas isn't the answer.
Lorenzo Cain, CF5/5/2014 5:18:00 PM
Description: Kansas City center fielder Lorenzo Cain has been activated from the 15-day DL.
Insight: He's missed the last 17 games with a strained groin. Cain's return will probably prevent Jarrod Dyson (.289, 0 HR, 4 RBI) from seeing regular at bats.
Eric Hosmer, 1B5/4/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is still looking for his first homer this season.
Insight: He went 0-for-5 Sunday against the Tigers and is batting .286 with a .717 OPS. The first baseman also went all of April last year without hitting a homer and had just one in his first 61 games but finished with 16 in his last 98.
Jason Vargas, SPCold5/4/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has allowed 21 hits and 12 earned runs in his last two starts (11 1/3 innings).
Insight: Vargas had a 1.54 ERA after his first five starts but he's up to 3.50 after giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits in five innings Sunday against the Tigers. If you still have a chance to sell him based on his sub-4.00 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, do it. He doesn't strike out many batters (5.05 K/9) and is homer-prone.
Billy Butler, DH5/4/2014 1:20:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler loves facing Tigers starter Justin Verlander. In 71 lifetime at bats, he's hitting .437 against him with two homers and 11 RBI.
Insight: That's pretty convincing. Ignore Butler's disappointing numbers (.231, 1 HR, 12 RBI) and plug him into your lineup ASAP.
Salvador Perez, C5/4/2014 1:15:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez has done quite well against Justin Verlander in 24 lifetime at bats.
Insight: Perez is back in the lineup after sitting out Saturday's game with a sore shin. He's hitting .458 with ten RBI against Verlander. That's must-start material.
Alex Gordon, LF5/3/2014 12:01:00 PM
Description: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon faces a tough matchup Saturday against Tigers left-hander Drew Smyly.
Insight: Gordon is 1-for-12 against Smyly with seven strikeouts. That shouldn't make fantasy owners want to start him on Saturday.
Billy Butler, DH5/3/2014 11:58:00 AM
Description: Kansas City DH Billy Butler owns Tigers starter Drew Smyly.
Insight: He's 5-for-6 against the left-hander. Butler's .236 average certainly isn't appealing to fantasy owners but this matchup is. Get him into your lineup ASAP.
Alcides Escobar, SSCold5/2/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar is 1-for-21 (.048) versus Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello.
Insight: Escobar's hot streak is over and he's batting just .222 this week after an 11-game stretch in which he batted .417 from April 11-22.
Eric Hosmer, 1B5/2/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is a career .357 hitter against Detroit right-hander Rick Porcello with a pair of homers and a 1.223 OPS.
Insight: Hosmer is still hitting for a decent average this season (.299), but hasn't hit a home run after averaging almost 17 over the past three seasons. Today could be his lucky day.
Mike Moustakas, 3B5/1/2014 3:41:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas is not in Thursday's starting lineup versus Toronto.
Insight: Moustakas, was hot about a week ago, but has reverted back to the sub .200 hitter he has been for most of the season. After going 2-for-18 over the past five games, he's down to .149. Danny Valencia (.286) will start.
Chris Getz, 2B5/1/2014 10:44:00 AM
Description: Blue Jays second baseman Chris Getz isn't likely on anyone's radar, but he's a career .583 hitter (7-for-12) against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Getz has just six at-bats this season, but could be a nice surprise for a cheap price.
Salvador Perez, C4/30/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez launched his second homer of the season Tuesday against Toronto.
Insight: Perez (.250, 2 HR, 10 RBI) added a two-run double an inning later to finish the night with four RBI. He's had a mediocre first month but fantasy owners shouldn't give up on him.
Lorenzo Cain, CF4/28/2014 1:29:00 PM
Description: Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain (15-day disabled list) could return sometime this week, according to general manager Dayton Moore. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star.
Insight: He's been recovering from a Grade 1 groin strain. Cain was off to a hot start, batting .333 with seven runs scored in 12 games.
Omar Infante, 2B4/27/2014 6:05:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante drove in six runs Sunday at Baltimore.
Insight: Infante (.279, 2 HR, 17 RBI) had an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly in the first and third innings, respectively, a two-run double in the fifth and a two-run homer in the seventh.
Salvador Perez, CCold4/26/2014 1:25:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is hitless in eight at bats versus Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Perez is 1-for29 over his last seven games. He's a .292 career hitter, but has started off slowly, batting just .203 through the first 21 games. This matchup won't help.
Billy Butler, DH4/26/2014 1:22:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a career .583 hitter (7-for-12) against Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: We're still waiting for Butler to show up this season. he's batting just .207 with no homers and eight RBI. Perhaps today.
Yordano Ventura, SPHot4/25/2014 10:52:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Yordano Ventura was electric Friday at Baltimore.
Insight: The flamethrower held the O's scoreless and struck out eight over eight innings in a 5-0 win. Ventura gave up four runs on six hits and walked four over four innings in his previous start but otherwise has been excellent this season. Overall, he's 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 27 Ks in 25 innings.
Eric Hosmer, 1B4/25/2014 10:48:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is a career .364 hitter against Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez with a pair of homers and a 1.098 OPS.
Insight: Hosmer is hitting for a decent average this season (.301), but he's yet to go deep. Also beware that the weather in Baltimore is questionable with rain in the forecast this evening.
Billy Butler, DHCold4/24/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler went 0-for-4 Thursday at Cleveland and his average is back down to .195.
Insight: Butler had a streak of productivity (9-for-27), but he's gone 0-for-8 his last two games. The lead-footed DH has a career-high ground-ball rate of 65.1 percent, a career-worst 18.4 percent K rate and just two extra-base hits (zero HR) this season.
Salvador Perez, C4/24/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Perez was zero for his last 21 going into Wednesday's game, but did hit his first home run of the season. He's a .292 career hitter, but has started off slowly, batting just .213 through the first 20 games.
Mike Moustakas, 3BHot4/24/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: The suddenly hot-hitting Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas has a favorable matchup on Thursday.
Insight: Moustakas, who has homered in the last two games and has has four homers and 10 RBI over his last eight games, is a career 6-for-12 against Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber. You won't hear this often, but start Moustakas.
Salvador Perez, CCold4/23/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez hit his first home run of the season Wednesday at Cleveland.
Insight: Perez was zero for his last 21 going into Wednesday's game and has watched his average drop from .300 to .213.
Mike Moustakas, 3B 4/23/2014 10:09:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas homered for the second straight game Wednesday at Cleveland.
Insight: Moustakas has drilled four homers and driven in 10 runs over his last eight games but he's still just 11-for-69 (.159) this season. This is the second straight year he raked in spring training and then got off to an ice cold start.
Eric Hosmer, 1B4/22/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer blasted four hits Tuesday in an 8-2 win over Cleveland.
Insight: Hosmer hasn't found his home run stroke yet (still homerless in 74 at bats) but who needs the long ball when you're hitting over .300? Here's another thing Hosmer owners should be thrilled about: the 24-year-old has just six strikeouts in 19 games. With a contact rate like that, Hosmer should be in for a great season.
James Shields, SPHot4/17/2014 10:52:00 PM
Description: Kansas City ace James Shields shut down Houston on Thursday night.
Insight: Shields delivered 12 punchouts in eight innings of work as the Royals won by a score of 5-1. Thursday was the right-hander's first victory since September 27th.
Lorenzo Cain, CF4/17/2014 7:56:00 PM
Description: Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain is headed to the 15-day disabled list. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: He suffered a Grade 1 groin strain in Wednesday night's extra inning win over Houston. That's good news for Jarrod Dyson, who will take over center field duties during Cain's absence.
Bruce Chen, RP4/17/2014 10:35:00 AM
Description: Royals starter Bruce Chen will miss Thursday's scheduled start against Houston due to tightness in left glute.
Insight: The 36-year-old Chen had a 9-4 record with a 3.27 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 121 frames last year, but has started slowly this spring.
Eric Hosmer, 1B4/17/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Kansas City 1B Eric Hosmer is just 1-for-10 versus Houston starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: Hosmer is batting a respectable .286, but is still looking for his first home run. Avoid him on Thursday.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold4/16/2014 7:07:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas won't be in the starting lineup Wednesday against Houston.
Insight: He's off to a miserable start with just four hits in his first 40 at bats. Danny Valencia hasn't been much better (.125 AVG) but he'll get the start at third base on Wednesday.
Norichika Aoki, RFCold4/16/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: Royals right fielder Norichika Aoki is getting the night off Wednesday against Houston.
Insight: Aoki is just two for his last 19 (.105) and could probably use a night off to clear his head. Justin Maxwell (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI) will start in right field for Kansas City.
Yordano Ventura, SPHot4/16/2014 9:49:00 AM
Description: Royals starter Yordano Ventura picked up his first career win Tuesday at Houston.
Insight: Ventura touched 100 mph with his fastball and struck out seven batters over seven innings. He gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) and has a 0.69 ERA and 13 Ks in 13 innings this season.
Jason Vargas, SPHot4/13/2014 8:54:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas has a 1.64 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in 22 innings this year.
Insight: Last year, the Royals acquisition of Angels starter Ervin Santana worked pretty well, so they decided to try it again with Vargas. The 31-year-old had a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 150 innings last year and has never had an ERA better than 3.78 in a season. The extreme fly-ball pitcher is a good match for the Royals, who have two of the best defensive outfielders in the AL in Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain, but he won't keep up what he has done so far.
Omar Infante, 2B4/11/2014 6:08:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante (jaw) is in the starting lineup Friday, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Infante suffered a sprained jaw and required six stitches when he was hit in the face by a Heath Bell pitch on April 7.
Alex Gordon, LF4/9/2014 6:57:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon had a big day at the plate Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: Gordon had two hits, including a homer, and four RBI in four at-bats. The left fielder has averaged 19 homers, 80 RBI, 95 runs and 13 steals over the past three years. He's batting lower in the order this year, so expect fewer runs and more RBI.
Yordano Ventura, SP4/9/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: Yordano Ventura's major league debut Tuesday versus the Rays was a success (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K's, 0 BB).
Insight: It's only April, but you already get the feeling this kid is going to be something special. Expect the 22-year-old to be in the running for Rookie of the Year honors this season.
Omar Infante, 2B4/8/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante was hit in the face by a Heath Bell pitch Monday night, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Infante suffered a sprained jaw and required six stitches. He'll be re-evaluated in a couple of days. Danny Valencia will take over at second base until Infante returns.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold4/6/2014 11:10:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas will hit the bench Sunday with Chris Sale on the mound for Chicago, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: The Royals acquired Danny Valencia for his ability to hit lefties, and he'll start Sunday. A second straight scorching spring training has led to a second straight ice cold April for Moustakas, who is 0-for-15 this season. It's still early, but fantasy owners don't have much patience for the 25-year-old third baseman after underwhelming seasons in 2012 and 2013.
Norichika Aoki, RF4/6/2014 10:57:00 AM
Description: Royals RF Norichika Aoki is out of the starting lineup Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Aoki is off to a 4-for-16 start with two doubles, three walks and one steal with his new team. He's getting a day off with lefty Chris Sale on the mound.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold4/6/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas has gone 4-for-20 with seven strikeouts against White Sox starter Chris Sale.
Insight: A second straight scorching spring training has led to a second straight ice cold April for Moustakas, who is 0-for-15 this season. It's still early, but fantasy owners don't have much patience for the 25-year-old third baseman after underwhelming seasons in 2012 and 2013.
Eric Hosmer, 1B4/6/2014 9:44:00 AM
Description: White Sox starter Chris Sale has fanned Eric Hosmer eight times in 25 at-bats.
Insight: Hosmer has gone 5-for-14 (.357) in 2014 but he's still looking for his first homer. He's unlikely to get it off Sale, who has limited Hosmer to six hits (five singles) in 25 at-bats (.240).
Billy Butler, DH4/6/2014 9:43:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler hasn't had much of an issue against White Sox ace left-hander Chris Sale.
Insight: Butler has gone 3-for-12 with two RBI, four walks and zero strikeouts in his first four games and he has hit .412 (14-for-34) with two doubles and three homers against Sale.
Bruce Chen, RP4/5/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Bruce Chen surrendered one (unearned) run and struck out seven batters in 6 1/3 innings Saturday against the White Sox.
Insight: The 36-year-old Chen has been around since 1998 and owns a career ERA of 4.47, but he had a 3.27 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 121 frames last year (3.61 ERA, 1.08 WHIP in 87 1/3 innings as a starter).
Billy Butler, DH4/5/2014 6:49:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler went 1-for-2 with two RBI Saturday against the White Sox.
Insight: Butler has gone 3-for-12 with two RBI, four walks and zero strikeouts in his first four games. The 27-year-old tailed off from his career year in 2012 and hit .289 with 15 homers, 82 RBI and a .786 OPS last season.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold4/5/2014 9:42:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is still seeking his first hit of the season and it's unlikely to come against White Sox starter John Danks.
Insight: Moustakas is 1-for-11 versus Danks. We've been waiting for three years for Moustakas to produce and another slow start may be the end of his fantasy relevance.
Alcides Escobar, SSCold4/5/2014 9:40:00 AM
Description: Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar is hitless in 10 at-bats versus White Sox left-hander John Danks with four strikeouts.
Insight: Escobar is also hitless on the season (0-for-11). Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
Yordano Ventura, SP4/3/2014 1:33:00 PM
Description: Royals hurler Yordano Ventura will be skipped in the rotation after his scheduled start on Thursday was rained out, according to Lynn Henning.
Insight: He'll likely make his first start on Tuesday against Tampa Bay. He has been dominant this spring and should be drafted/claimed in all leagues.
Salvador Perez, C4/3/2014 9:32:00 AM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is hitless in nine at-bats against Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: Perez has gotten out of the gate quickly, batting .714 (5-for-7) through the first two games. He's a career .304 hitter and has the talent to hit 20 homers, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Jason Vargas, SP4/2/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Jason Vargas gave up five hits and one earned run while striking out six in seven innings Wednesday at Detroit.
Insight: Vargas joined the Royals this offseason after spending one year with the Angels. The lefty is an extreme fly-ball pitcher who is prone to homers and doesn't strike many people out. He went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 150 frames last season and is best left for AL-only owners.
Mike Moustakas, 3B4/2/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is still seeking his first hit of the season, but he'll be hard-pressed to get it against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Moustakas is just a .130 hitter in this matchup with more than twice as many strikeouts (7) than hits (3) in 23 career at-bats. Avoid him today.
Alex Gordon, LF4/2/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is a .393 lifetime hitter against Detroit ace Max Scherzer with a pair of homers and a 1.229 OPS.
Insight: Gordon's .265 average was the lowest since 2010, but he was still a solid across the board contributor with 90 runs, 20 HR, 81 RBI and 11 steals. This is a favorable matchup.
Salvador Perez, C3/31/2014 4:32:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez crushed four hits Monday in a season-opening loss to Detroit.
Insight: Perez has quickly become one of the best hitting catchers in baseball. Since making his debut in 2011, the Royals backstop is hitting .304 with 27 HR and 141 RBI in 937 at bats. Three of his four hits Monday came off former Cy Young winner Justin Verlander.
Mike Moustakas, 3B3/31/2014 11:37:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas hasn't had much luck against Justin Verlander in the past.
Insight: Moustakas is hitting a dismal .182 against Verlander in 33 at bats. Third base isn't a deep position this year but there are certainly much better options than Moustakas (.233, 12 HR, 42 RBI in 2013). Leave him on your bench today.
Billy Butler, DH3/31/2014 11:27:00 AM
Description: Kansas City designated hitter Billy Butler loves facing Justin Verlander.
Insight: Somehow, he's managed a .441 batting average against him in 68 at bats. Butler's fantasy value is tough to gage because he isn't eligible at first base in all formats but he's certainly worth starting today against Verlander.
Omar Infante, 2B3/31/2014 10:21:00 AM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante will start Monday against Detroit. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: Infante (.318, 10 HR, 51 RBI in 2013) missed time with elbow issues during spring training but is ready to go for Opening Day. He'll bat second behind leadoff man Norichika Aoki.
Salvador Perez, C3/26/2014 5:07:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez does not have a concussion and says he is fine, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Perez took a curveball off his helmet behind the left ear on Wednesday and walked off under his own power. The 23-year-old hit .292 with 13 home runs, 79 RBI and a .756 OPS in 138 games last season and has a career .301 average in 933 at bats.
Salvador Perez, C3/26/2014 4:27:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez took a curveball off his helmet during an at-bat and left Wednesday's game, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Perez walked off under his own power and will presumably be checked for a concussion. The 23-year-old hit .292 with 13 home runs, 79 RBI and a .756 OPS in 138 games last season and has a career .301 average in 933 at-bats.
Omar Infante, 2B3/25/2014 6:55:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Omar Infante admitted that his elbow still bothers him when he throws and hits. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: Infante played in a minor league game Tuesday while wearing a sleeve on his elbow. He is still hoping to be ready for Opening Day, but he's running out of time.
James Shields, SPHot3/23/2014 1:55:00 PM
Description: Royals starter James Shields has struck out 24 batters without issuing a walk in 20 2/3 innings during spring training.
Insight: Shields had a 3.15 ERA, a 1.24 ERA and a 196/68 K/BB in 228 2/3 innings last season. He has thrown at least 203 1/3 frames in each of the last seven seasons and is a very safe mid-tier option who is undervalued (Yahoo ADP: 94).
Danny Duffy, SP3/23/2014 12:52:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy will begin the year in the minors.
Insight: Duffy lost the fifth spot in the rotation to Yordano Ventura. The hard-throwing Duffy's career was been set back by Tommy John surgery, but he returned to post a 1.85 ERA and 22 Ks in 24 1/3 innings last season. He'll be the first pitcher called up if Kansas City needs an injury replacement in the rotation.
Mike Moustakas, 3B3/21/2014 11:44:00 AM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas played six innings at second base on Thursday.
Insight: He's a third baseman and this is likely just a emergency option if needed, but its interesting to note that his value would likely rise if he became second-base eligible.
Omar Infante, 2B3/19/2014 8:45:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Omar Infante received a cortisone shot in his elbow on Tuesday. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: This comes just a week and a half after dealing with shoulder inflammation. None of this bodes well for the 32-year-old after missing more than a month last season because of a sprained ankle. If by some miracle Infante recovers quickly and can stay relatively healthy throughout the season, he could hit close to .300.
Yordano Ventura, SP3/17/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: According to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star, the Royals will likely name Yordano Ventura to their starting rotation as early as this week.
Insight: MLB.com's No. 35 prospect in all of baseball possesses an upper-90s fastball and struck out 155 batters in 134 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A last season before posting a 3.52 ERA and 11 Ks in 15 1/3 innings with the Royals. He has been dominant this spring and should be drafted in all leagues.
Yordano Ventura, SP3/16/2014 11:20:00 AM
Description: Yordano Ventura has emerged as the leading candidate to fill the No. 5 spot in Kansas City's starting rotation. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Kansas City Star
Insight: The 22-year-old posted a 3.52 ERA in three starts for the Royals in 2013. So far this spring, he's 0-1 with seven strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings.
Mike Moustakas, 3BHot3/14/2014 3:50:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas, hoping to rebound from a sub par 2013, is batting .500 this spring with four homers and a 1.595 OPS.
Insight: Yes, we know its spring training, but anything that Moustakas and his fantasy owners can hang their hat on is a good thing. This best thing about his 28 spring at-bats is he's struck out just four times.
Ervin Santana, SP3/11/2014 6:16:00 PM
Description: According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves could make a run at Ervin Santana.
Insight: The Blue Jays, Orioles and Twins have already offered Santana a deal, but the Braves could jump in late following injuries to Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy. Going to the National League and facing teams like the Marlins and Mets frequently would be great for Santana's fantasy value.
Brad Penny, SP3/7/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: Kansas City has parted ways with veteran righthander Brad Penny. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: Penny was having an awful spring training (15.75 ERA in two appearances) and the fact that he punched a wall and hurt his hand probably didn't help matters. The two-time All-Star hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2012 and we'd be surprised if he ever does again.
Luke Hochevar, SP3/7/2014 3:18:00 PM
Description: Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to manager Ned Yost, ending his 2014 season.
Insight: Hochevar, the 2006 first-overall pick, found his niche last season as a reliever, throwing 70 1/3 innings and posting a 1.92 ERAm a 0.83 WHIP and 82 strikeouts.
Omar Infante, 2B3/6/2014 7:53:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Omar Infante will sit out Friday's spring training game versus the Giants. SOURCE: Kansas City Star
Insight: He's dealing with some inflammation in his right shoulder. Infante (.318, 10 HR, 51 RBI in 2013) shouldn't miss more than a few days.
Luke Hochevar, SP3/5/2014 1:01:00 PM
Description: Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament and will be shut down for at least two weeks, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Insight: Manager Ned Yost said the best-case scenario is that Hochevar will be able to return by late-May or June, but he'll have to undergo Tommy John surgery if rest doesn't help. Hochevar, the 2006 first-overall pick, was a failed starter, going 38-59 with a 5.39 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP in his first six seasons, but he was excellent in relief last season, throwing 70 1/3 innings and posting a 1.92 ERAm a 0.83 WHIP and 82 strikeouts. The team was expected to give him another look in the rotation this spring, but that plan is out the window even if he is able to avoid surgery.
Ervin Santana, SP2/22/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: A source told Ken Rosenthal that Ervin Santana would rather sit out until after the MLB Draft in June than accept a one-year contract like Nelson Cruz' $8 million deal with the Orioles.
Insight: Teams have been hesitant to sign Santana because of the draft pick compensation attached to him. That compensation disappears after the draft. The right-hander pitched for the Royals last season and turned down their $14.1 million qualifying offer.
Emilio Bonifacio, 2B2/12/2014 2:44:00 PM
Description: The Royals officially released infielder Emilio Bonifacio on Wednesday. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: He was placed on waivers earlier this week. Bonifacio is gifted with elite speed but not much else. His career batting average is only .262. We'll see if he catches on with someone in time for spring training.
Ervin Santana, SP2/11/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: After striking out with Bronson Arroyo, the Orioles have now shifted their attention to signing righthander Ervin Santana. SOURCE: Dan Connolly, Baltimore Sun
Insight: Santana, A.J. Burnett and Ubaldo Jimenez are probably the three best starters left on the market now that Arroyo has signed with the Diamondbacks. Baltimore would have to give up a draft pick to sign Santana (9-10, 3.24 ERA in Kansas City), which is probably why he remains unsigned despite the fact that pitchers and catchers report to camp in less than a week.
Emilio Bonifacio, 2B2/2/2014 11:38:00 AM
Description: The Royals designated utilty man Emilio Bonifacio for assignment on Saturday. SOURCE: Pete Grathoff, Kansas City Star
Insight: That opens up a roster spot for lefthander Bruce Chen. Bonifacio lost his spot at second base when the team inked Omar Infante to a four-year contract earlier this offseason. The 28-year-old is just a .262 lifetime hitter but he's an intriguing fantasy possibility because of his elite speed and positional flexibility.
Ervin Santana, SP1/13/2014 9:32:00 PM
Description: The Orioles, Twins and Yankees have all requested medical records for righthander Ervin Santana. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: That doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to sign with any of them but there does appear to be some interest. Any team that signs Santana (9-10, 3.24 ERA) will have to give up a draft pick, which may be why he hasn't generated much interest on the open market this winter.
Ramon Hernandez, C1/7/2014 5:17:00 PM
Description: Veteran catcher Ramon Hernandez has accepted a minor league deal with Kansas City. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The deal includes an invite to spring training. Hernandez saw just 17 games of action last season, connecting on three homers in 48 at bats for the Dodgers. The best case scenario is that he backs up Salvador Perez (.292, 13 HR, 79 RBI) next season.
Omar Infante, 2BHot12/13/2013 8:55:00 PM
Description: Second baseman Omar Infante is headed to Kansas City. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: He signed for four years and about $30 million. The Yankees were also in on him but they only offered Infante three years and $24 million. Infante hit .318 for the Tigers last year but is just a .279 career hitter. Expect him to come back to Earth a little in 2014.
Norichika Aoki, RF12/5/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Outfielder Norichika Aoki has been traded from Milwaukee to Kansas City.
Insight: Aoki hasn't shown a lot of power, but he's averaged 25 SB in his to seasons with Milwaukee. If he earns a spot at the top of the Royals lineup he could have a solid value as a No. 3 fantasy outfield. He's a career .287 hitter with a .355 OBP and a .755 OPS.
Michael Mariot, SP11/22/2013 9:50:00 AM
Description: The Royals added minor league RP Michael Mariot to their 40-man roster.
Insight: Mariot had 11 saves with a 3.56 ERA and 1.385 WHIP in the minors last season. The move was to protect him from being a Rule 5 Draft casualty. The Royals already have an excellent closer in Greg Holland (47 saves, 1.21 ERA, 0.867 WHIP) so Mariot likely doesn't have much fantasy value in 2014.
Jason Vargas, SP11/21/2013 9:34:00 PM
Description: The Kansas City Royals signed Jason Vargas to a four-year, $32 million contract Thursday.
Insight: After four seasons with Seattle, Vargas fired 150 innings and went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 24 starts with the Angels in 2013. He'll presumably take former Angel Ervin Santana's spot in the Royals rotation. He's a mediocre fantasy option due to his high WHIP and lack of Ks.
Ervin Santana, SP11/13/2013 9:37:00 PM
Description: Starting pitcher Ervin Santana is aiming for a five-year, $112 million contract in free agency. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: That's simply not going to happen. Anibal Sanchez settled for a five-year, $80 million deal last offseason and he's twice as good as Santana. The righthander turned down Kansas City's qualifying offer, which means that whoever signs him will have to give up a draft pick.
James Shields, SP10/31/2013 9:12:00 PM
Description: The Royals have exercised James Shields' team option for 2014. SOURCE: Bob Dutton, Kansas City Star
Insight: Shields (13-9, 3.15 ERA) will earn $13.5 million in base salary next season. He was dominant in his first year in KC and should be again in 2014.
Alex Gordon, LF9/29/2013 11:33:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is a .150 lifetime hitter against White Sox starter Jose Quintana. UPDATE: Gordon is not in the lineup Sunday.
Insight: Gordon's average is just .265 this season but he has kept his fantasy value up by scoring 90 runs, stealing 11 bases, slugging 20 home runs and driving in 81 runs. However, he's batting .167 over his last nine games and is 3-for-20 against Quintana.
Eric Hosmer, 1B9/29/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer has struggled against White Sox lefty Jose Quintana, Sunday's scheduled starter.
Insight: After a down year in 2012 and a poor start to this season, Hosmer has really turned things around and become a strong all-around fantasy first baseman. He has hit .302 with 17 homers, 79 RBI, 86 runs, 15 steals and an .801 OPS, but he's unlikely to end his season on a high note Sunday.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold9/29/2013 10:39:00 AM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas has hit .195 with a .572 OPS in September but he'll finish the season with a strong matchup Sunday.
Insight: Moustakas has hit .421 (8-for-19) with three doubles and two round-trippers against White Sox starter Jose Quintana. He has failed to live up to expectations during his time in the big leagues but it would be nice if he had a big game to wrap up this disappointing season.
James Shields, SP9/28/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: Kansas City starter James Shields struck out 10 batters and allowed one run on four hits over seven innings Friday night against the White Sox.
Insight: Shields has struck out 10 batters in two of his last three starts and is 7-1 with a 2.65 ERA and 65 K in 68 innings over his last 10 outings. Shields is a big reason why the Royals have a winning record for the first time since 2003; the team went 21-13 in his starts. He'll finish with a 13-9 record and a 3.15 ERA in 228 2/3 innings.
Billy Butler, DH9/27/2013 9:56:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is 11-for-31 (.355) with three home runs against White Sox left-hander Chris Sale.
Insight: Butler's power numbers are down, with just 14 HR this season and 40 extra base hits versus 29 and 62, respectively, last season, but this is a favorable matchup.
Justin Maxwell, CF9/22/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Justin Maxwell led the Royals to victory with a walkoff grand slam Sunday versus Texas.
Insight: It was Maxwell's second career walkoff grand slam and his fourth grand slam overall. Since coming over at the trade deadline, Maxwell has hit .308 for the Royals with five homers and 17 RBI.
James Shields, SP9/22/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Kansas City starter James Shields tossed eight shutout innings Sunday in a 4-0 win over Texas.
Insight: Shields has been a great pickup for Kansas City. In 33 starts, he's 12-9 with a 3.21 ERA and 186 strikeouts. The righthander is slated to make his final start of the regular season (the Royals still have a 4.6 percent chance of making the playoffs) Friday versus the White Sox.
Billy Butler, DH9/17/2013 12:02:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is just 1-for-12 (.083) with five strikeouts against Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber.
Insight: Butler's power numbers are down, with just 14 HR this season and 39 extra base hits versus 29 and 62, respectively, last season. Avoid this matchup.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold9/15/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas has gone 7-for-49 (.143) over his last 14 games and doesn't have good numbers against Tigers starter Max Scherzer.
Insight: Moustakas batted .321 with an .873 OPS in his first 30 games of the second half, but he has hit another long slump. He's just 2-for-20 against Scherzer so he isn't likely to do anything Sunday.
Alex Gordon, LF9/15/2013 10:24:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon enters play Sunday against the Tigers 9-for-25 (.360) with three doubles, a homer and seven walks against scheduled starter Max Scherzer.
Insight: Gordon has scored at least one run in six straight games and hit .287 with eight doubles, a triple and nine home runs in his last 37.
Salvador Perez, CHot9/15/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez won't be intimidated by facing 19-3 Tigers hurler Max Scherzer Sunday. Perez is 6-for-15 (.400) with a double and two homers against Scherzer.
Insight: Perez has hit .391 with four doubles, six homers, 22 RBI and a 1.131 OPS over his last 20 games to pull his season OPS up from .672 to .744.
Ervin Santana, SP9/14/2013 10:07:00 PM
Description: Kansas City righthander Ervin Santana improved to 9-9 with a win Saturday against the Tigers.
Insight: Saturday was his first win in over a month (August 4th against the Mets). Santana (3.23 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) has had an excellent season but for some reason, his manager Ned Yost has him on a short leash. It's been six starts since his last 100-pitch outing.
Emilio Bonifacio, 2B9/14/2013 9:35:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Emilio Bonifacio got tossed for showing up an umpire Saturday versus the Tigers. SOURCE: Bob Dutton, Kansas City Star
Insight: Bonifacio threw his helmet down in frustration after he was picked off first base and was given the heave-ho moments later by umpire James Hoye. Chris Getz has since entered the game to to take over at second base for Bonifacio.
Billy Butler, DHt9/13/2013 10:22:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is the rare hitter with success versus Detroit first-game starter Justin Verlander.
Insight: Butler is a career .431 hitter (28-for-65) with a pair of homers and a 1.085 OPS against the ace right-hander.
James Shields, SP9/11/2013 10:20:00 PM
Description: Royals ace James Shields shut down the Indians Wednesday night.
Insight: Shields gave up two runs on four hits and struck out seven over eight innings to bounce back from his worst start of the season. He allowed 14 hits and 10 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings versus Detroit his last time on the hill.
Alex Gordon, LFHot9/11/2013 10:17:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon launched his 19th homer of the season Wednesday against the Indians.
Insight: Gordon has picked up 18 extra-base hits, including nine homers, in his last 157 plate appearances (11.5 XBH%). He only had 10 homers and a 6.8 percent extra-base hit rate over his first 474 plate appearances this season.
Jamey Carroll, 2B9/11/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Royals infielder Jamey Carroll is 7-for-12 (.583) versus Cleveland left-hander Scott Kazmir.
Insight: Carroll hasn't been used much by Kansas City, but if he gets a chance to play on Wednesday you could use him in your lineup.
Salvador Perez, C9/9/2013 12:36:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez is just 1-for-10, a single, against Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: The Royals are taking things slow with Perez after a foul ball hit him in the head Thursday against Seattle. George Kottaras might get a start tonight.
Eric Hosmer, 1B9/8/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer's 15 homers and 52 RBI since June 13 equate to 30 and 105 over 162 games.
Insight: Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer Sunday against the Tigers and is hitting .302 with 16 longballs, 73 RBI and an .808 OPS this season.
Salvador Perez, C9/8/2013 11:37:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez will take a breather Sunday against Detroit.
Insight: The Royals are taking things slow with Perez after a foul ball hit him in the head Thursday against Seattle. George Kottaras will be filling in at catcher.
Mike Moustakas, 3BCold9/8/2013 11:06:00 AM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas has gone 3-for-30 (.100) over his last eight games.
Insight: Moustakas was hitting .321 with an .873 OPS since the All-Star break prior to this cold streak. He does have a strong matchup Sunday against Tigers starter Doug Fister; he has gone 7-for-19 (.368) with one homer against Fister.
Salvador Perez, CHot9/7/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez hit his seventh home run since Aug. 17 Saturday against the Tigers.
Insight: Perez only had four home runs, a .270 average and a .673 OPS prior to that point, but he's up to 11 homers, a .282 average and a .737 OPS after going 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI Saturday.
Billy Butler, DHHot9/7/2013 11:06:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is the rare hitter with success versus Detroit first-game starter Justin Verlander.
Insight: Butler is a career .435 hitter (27-for-62) with a pair of homers and a 1.104 OPS against the ace right-hander. Butler is in the midst of a modest five-game hitting streak, including a 5-for-5 game on Thursday.
Billy Butler, DH9/5/2013 9:56:00 PM
Description: Kansas City DH Billy Butler slammed five hits Thursday in a win against Seattle.
Insight: All five were singles, which seems to be the theme with Butler lately. Since the All-Star break, only 12 of his 59 hits have gone for extra bases (20.3 percent).
Salvador Perez, C9/5/2013 9:12:00 PM
Description: Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez left Thursday's game with a head injury. SOURCE: Bob Dutton, Kansas City Star
Insight: He took a foul ball off his catcher's mask and experienced some "mild dizziness." It sounds like Perez (.286, 10 HR, 64 RBI) may have suffered a concussion.
James Shields, SPHot9/1/2013 4:54:00 PM
Description: Kansas City ace James Shields (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 9 K's, 1 BB) was brilliant Sunday in a win over Toronto.
Insight: Shields (10-8, 3.03 ERA) has been untouchable over his last five starts (4-0, 1.53). The 5-0 victory puts the Royals just six games back in the AL Wild Card. Shields will try for win No. 11 next Friday against Detroit.
Jeremy Guthrie, SP8/31/2013 5:25:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie took a no decision Saturday against the Blue Jays despite allowing one run over seven innings.
Insight: Guthrie went 2-3 with a 3.60 ERA in August and is 13-10 with a 4.08 ERA this season.
Ervin Santana, SP8/30/2013 10:01:00 PM
Description: Royals starter Ervin Santana went 1-2 with a 3.82 ERA in August.
Insight: Santana was the tough-luck loser Friday at Toronto. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits over seven innings but Kansas City only mustered two runs. Santana has resurrected his career with a 3.19 ERA this season, but he has just eight wins to show for it.
Billy Butler, DH8/30/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a career .351 hitter (20-for-57) against Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle with three homers and 15 RBI.
Insight: After a slow start, Butler has picked it up over the summer and pushed his batting average to .295 with 14 homers, however, he has no chance to match last year's home run total (29). Start him in this favorable matchup.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/29/2013 7:09:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas is hoping to return to the lineup Friday against Toronto. SOURCE: Bob Dutton, Kansas City Star
Insight: Moustakas missed Thursday's series finale because of strep throat. The 24-year-old is hitting .314 since the All-Star break.
Alex Gordon, LFHot8/29/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is 10-for-27 (.370) with four doubles, a triple, two homers, seven RBI and nine runs over his last six games.
Insight: It's good to see Gordon hitting for extra bases. His extra-base hit production is way down from last season, when he had 70 in 721 plate appearances (9.7 percent). This year, he has 45 in 568 plate appearances (7.9 percent).
Danny Duffy, SP8/29/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy blanked the Twins over 6 2/3 innings Wednesday night to pick up his second win over the season.
Insight: Duffy struck out seven and didn't walk a batter Wednesday. He has given up just six hits and no runs over 12 2/3 innings. With Wade Davis finally moved to the bullpen, the 24-year-old Duffy should have a spot in the rotation going forward. Fantasy owners in deeper leagues should take a flyer on him.
Salvador Perez, CHot8/29/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez has discovered his power stroke this week.
Insight: Perez went deep twice Wednesday against the Twins and is 9-for-17 (.529) with four home runs and 11 RBI over his last four games. He only had five homers all season prior to this stretch.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/28/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is expected to miss Wednesday's game against Minnesota with strep throat.
Insight: After failing to produce in April and May, Moustakas is batting .281 over his last 64 games, but still not hitting with enough power for fantasy owners (.744 OPS).
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/27/2013 5:34:00 PM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moutstakas will miss the next few games with strep throat, according to Bob Dutton of the KC Star.
Insight: The 24-year-old is hitting .314 with four homers, 17 RBI and an .859 OPS since the All-Star break after batting .215 with a .598 OPS in the first half. He should be back by this weekend at the latest.
David Lough, RF8/26/2013 1:44:00 PM
Description: Royals right fielder David Lough is not in the starting lineup for Monday's game with Tampa Bay.
Insight: Lough has done a decent job for the Royals, batting .287 with four homers, 30 RBI and 28 runs in 75 games, but just .176 over the past nine games. Justin Maxwell gets the start.
Billy Butler, DHHot8/26/2013 11:34:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a career .583 hitter (7-for-12) against Tampa Bay right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Butler hasn't homered off of Hellickson and only driven in one run, but you can't argue with a 1.365 OPS. After a slow start, Butler has picked it up over the summer and pushed his batting average to .290, however, he has no chance to match last year's home run total (29).
Eric Hosmer, 1B8/22/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer has been limited to two hits in 18 at-bats against Jose Quintana of the White Sox.
Insight: Hosmer has struck out five times against the Chicago left-hander. The first baseman has had a nice bounce-back campaign, hitting .296 with 14 homers, 59 RBI, 64 runs, 10 steals and a .786 OPS, but fantasy owners can avoid this matchup.
Alex Gordon, LFCold8/22/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is hitting .301 with an .846 OPS in 156 at-bats against left-handers this season, but he has struggled against Chicago lefty Jose Quintana, going 2-for-17 (.118).
Insight: Gordon's extra-base hit production is way down from 2012, when he had a 9.7 percent rate in 721 plate appearances. His extra-base hit rate is just 7.1 percent in 2013, and he is hitting just .206 with a .243 BABIP over his last 70 games after starting out .340 with a .404 BABIP.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/22/2013 9:41:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moutstakas (calf) returned to the lineup Tuesday and went 0-for-2 with a walk and one RBI. He has a favorable matchup Thursday.
Insight: Moustakas, who is batting .299 with an .851 OPS since the All-Star break, is just 16-for-86 (.186) against left-handers this season but is 7-for-16 with two homers against White Sox southpaw Jose Quintana.
Alex Gordon, LFCold8/20/2013 11:42:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is just a .130 hitter (3-for-23) against White Sox starter John Danks.
Insight: Gordon's numbers are down from 2012. He's batting just .262 this season against .294 last year and has knocked out 38 extra base hits after posting 70 last season, including a league-leading 51 doubles. He's hitting just .203 since the All-Star break and fantasy owners should avoid this matchup.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/20/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moutstakas is doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Moustakas has been bothered by a sore calf all week, though he did return to smack two hits in Saturday's 6-5 loss. After an ugly April and May with a batting average below the Mendoza line, Moustakas is batting .306 since the All-Star game to bring his average up to .236. Not great, but at least he's headed in the right direction.
Bruce Chen, RPHot8/18/2013 5:50:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left-hander Bruce Chen came back to Earth Sunday at Detroit. He gave up six runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Insight: Chen came in having allowed four earned runs on 19 hits over his last 38 2/3 innings, but he wasn't expected to maintain that level of play or anything close to it.
Billy Butler, DHHot8/18/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: Butler is 20-for-51 (.392) with four doubles and three homers over his last 13 games and has his average up to .289.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/18/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moutstakas is out again Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: Moustakas has been bothered by a sore calf all week, though he did return to smack two hits in Saturday's 6-5 loss. Utility player Emilio Bonifacio is getting the start at third base.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/17/2013 3:55:00 PM
Description: Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas is back in the lineup after missing five games with a calf injury.
Insight: Moustakas was never in danger of going on the DL. Saturday, Moustakas will face off against the Tigers, a team he's hitting .286 against this season.
Miguel Tejada, 2B8/17/2013 2:30:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Miguel Tejada faces a 105 game suspension for violating the league's drug program, according to Yahoo Sports.
Insight: Tejada (.288, .695 OPS) claims that Adderall was the drug he tested positive for. This likely marks the end of Tejada's 16-year major league career. Tejada's suspensions is the third-longest in major league history.
Lorenzo Cain, CF8/17/2013 9:05:00 AM
Description: Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain left Wednesday night's game in the 10th inning due to a groin strain.
Insight: Too bad, as Cain is off to one of his best start in four seasons with Kansas City, batting .333 through his first dozen games. He could miss a few days with Jarrod Dyson likely to see more playing time.
James Shields, SP8/16/2013 10:14:00 PM
Description: Royals starter James Shields has won four of his last five starts.
Insight: He blanked Detroit over seven three-hit innings Friday in Game 2 of a doubleheader and is now 8-8 with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.
Eric Hosmer, 1B8/16/2013 10:11:00 PM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer hit a home run in both games of a doubleheader Friday at Detroit, giving him 14 this season.
Insight: That's as many home runs as he had all of last season. After hitting .274 with one homer over his first 61 games this season, Hosmer has 13 longballs to go with a .317 average over his last 57.
Danny Duffy, SP8/16/2013 8:21:00 PM
Description: Royals left-hander Danny Duffy allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings Friday afternoon at Detroit in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Insight: It was Duffy's first win since May 3, 2012. The young lefty showed promise last year prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery, but he's blocked out of the rotation right now.
David Lough, RF8/16/2013 12:16:00 PM
Description: Royals right fielder David Lough is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against Detroit.
Insight: Lough has done a fine job for the Royals, batting .293 with four homers, 28 RBI and 28 runs in 68 games. Justin Maxwell gets the start.
Salvador Perez, C8/16/2013 12:14:00 PM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez will not start the first game of the doubleheader with Detroit.
Insight: Perez is a .333 hitter against Justin Verlander (5-for-15), but will apparently start the nightcap. George Kottaras gets to face the 2011 AL Cy Young Award winner.
Alex Gordon, LF8/16/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Unlike teammate Billy Butler, Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is just a .200 hitter against Justin Verlander with 21 strikeouts in 55 official at-bats.
Insight: Gordon's numbers are down from 2012. He's batting just .266 this season against .294 last year and has knocked out 37 extra base hits after posting 70 last season, including a league-leading 51 doubles. Fantasy owners should avoid this matchup.
Billy Butler, DHHot8/16/2013 9:41:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is the rare hitter with success versus Detroit first-game starter Justin Verlander.
Insight: Butler is a career .424 hitter (25-for-59) with a pair of homers and a 1.086 OPS against the ace right-hander. Butler saw an eight-game hitting streak fall by the wayside in the first game of this series with the Tigers, but has his batting average up to .286.
Miguel Tejada, 2B8/14/2013 6:58:00 PM
Description: Kansas City second baseman Miguel Tejada has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Insight: That means Tejada is done for the season. He suffered a strained calf over the weekend. Emilio Bonifacio, was was acquired from Toronto in a trade earlier today, will take over for Tejada at second base.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/14/2013 6:48:00 PM

Insight: Bonifacio, who was traded from Miami to Toronto last offseason, hit just .218 with a .579 OPS in 94 games with the Jays. What's worse is that he had just 12 steals. Bonifacio carried solid fantasy value last year by stealing 30 bases in 64 games while battling numerous injuries. He could see regular at-bats at second base or in right field with the Royals, but he isn't someone fantasy owners need to add at this point.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/14/2013 11:34:00 AM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas left Monday's game with tightness in his left calf and missed Tuesday's game.
Insight: Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports seeing him in a walking boot, which can't be a good sign for his Wednesday availability. Moustakas has struggled for most of the season but is hitting .293 with four homers and an .852 OPS since the All-Star break.
Lorenzo Cain, CF8/14/2013 11:31:00 AM
Description: Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain, sidelined by a strained left oblique, has no current timetable for returning to the field.
Insight: Cain is only hitting .261 for the season and the team is getting good mileage out of Jarrod Dyson and David Lough.
Bruce Chen, RPHot8/13/2013 10:59:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left-hander Bruce Chen has given up just four earned runs on 19 hits over 38 2/3 innings since rejoining the rotation.
Insight: Chen hasn't given up a run in 14 2/3 innings over his last two starts, including Tuesday against the Marlins. At age 36 and 1,428 2/3 innings into his career, Chen is pitching some of the best ball ever.
Mike Moustakas, 3B8/13/2013 5:34:00 PM
Description: Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas left Monday's game with tightness in his left calf and will miss Tuesday's game.
Insight: He's likely out for Wednesday as well, according to Bob Dutton of the KC Star. The third baseman was feeling better Tuesday and his limp was down to a minimum, so he isn't expected to go on the DL at this point. Moustakas has struggled for most of the season but is hitting .300 with four homers and an .857 OPS over his last 22 games.
Chris Getz, 2B8/12/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Chris Getz has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: Getz served the minimum 15 days on the DL. He was dealing with a sprained knee. Getz hasn't had an impressive season so far (.209, 1 HR, 14 RBI in 54 games) but he should see regular at bats while Miguel Tejada is out with a calf injury.
Jamey Carroll, 2B8/11/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: The Royals have acquired infielder Jamey Carroll from the Twins for a player to be named later or cash considerations. SOURCE: Danny Knobler, CBS Sports
Insight: Carroll had mostly been playing third base for Minnesota but he'll serve as the everyday second baseman for Kansas City. The Royals needed a second baseman after Miguel Tejada went down with a strained calf on Saturday.
Alex Gordon, LF8/11/2013 5:53:00 PM
Description: Unlike teammate Billy Butler, Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon is just a .200 hitter against Justin Verlander with 21 strikeouts in 55 official at-bats.
Insight: Gordon's numbers are down from 2012. He's batting just .266 this season against .294 last year and has knocked out 37 extra base hits after posting 70 last season, including a league-leading 51 doubles. Fantasy owners should avoid this matchup.
Miguel Tejada, 2B8/11/2013 4:40:00 PM
Description: Royals second baseman Miguel Tejada has been placed on the disabled list.
Insight: Tejada (.288, 3 HR, 20 RBI) strained his calf in a game Saturday versus Boston. Elliot Johnson (.184, 2 HR, 9 RBI) is playing second base Sunday in the series finale.

Jeremy Guthrie, SP8/11/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie lost to the Red Sox Saturday to snap a personal four-game winning streak.
Insight: Guthrie allowed five earned runs and 10 hits over six innings and has a 4.10 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP to go with a 12-8 record this season. The right-hander struggled badly with the longball from April through mid-June, but he has allowed a total of four homers over his last 61 2/3 innings (0.58 HR/9). However, his ERA in that span is 4.67.
Billy Butler, DHHot8/11/2013 9:19:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is batting .458 with five extra-base hits over his last six games.
Insight: Both Butler's home run total and extra-base hit rate are down this season compared to last year. He's now hitting .286 with an .802 OPS, 10 HR, 60 RBI and 40 runs.
Billy Butler, DH8/9/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Royals DH Billy Butler is a career .400 hitter with three long balls and a 1.204 OPS versus Boston starter Jake Peavy.
Insight: Butler's numbers are off this season (.278, 10 HR, 58 RBI, .785 OPS) as compared to last year when he set career highs for homers (29), RBI (107) and OPS (.882). perhaps this favorable matchup will get him going.
Alex Gordon, LF8/8/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon faces a difficult matchup Thursday against the Red Sox.
Insight: He usually struggles against Boston lefthander Jon Lester (.133 AVG in 15 at bats). Gordon busted out of a 1-for-23 slump with two hits Wednesday against the Twins.

David Lough, RF8/5/2013 12:06:00 PM
Description: Royals right fielder David Lough left Sunday's game because of quad tightness and is expected to miss Monday's game against Minnesota.
Insight: Too bad, as he was 5-for-5 in his "career" against Monday's starter Kevin Correia.
David Lough, RF8/4/2013 9:33:00 PM
Description: Royals right fielder David Lough left Sunday's game because of quad tightness and is expected to miss Monday's game against Minnesota.
Insight: Too bad, as he was 5-for-5 in his "career" against Monday's starter Kevin Correia.
Salvador Perez, C8/4/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez has been placed on the on the 7-day concussion disabled list. We're not sure when the injury took place.
Insight: Perez is batting .278 with four homers and 43 RBI, which is significantly below preseason expectations after he posted 11 HR and a .301 batting average in 76 games last season.
Justin Maxwell, CF8/3/2013 5:02:00 PM
Description: Royals newly acquired outfielder Justin Maxwell smacked a pinch-hit home run to put Kansas City ahead in the 12th inning.
Insight: Maxwell missed nearly two months this year with a broken hand and time with a concussion. He'll probably be in a platoon situation for the remainder of the season which will limit any fantasy value, but he does own a career .827 OPS versus left-handers.
Bruce Chen, RPHot8/3/2013 3:45:00 PM
Description: Kansas City left-hander Bruce Chen allowed one run on four hits while striking out eight against the Mets on Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Chen has been pitching phenomenally over the past four starts yielding just 11 hits and four runs in 24 innings (1.500 ERA).
Salvador Perez, C8/3/2013 11:40:00 AM
Description: Royals catcher Salvador Perez is not in Saturday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: No injury, just the typical day game after a night game off got the catcher. Perez is batting .279 with four homers and 43 RBI, which is significantly below preseason expectations after he posted 11 HR and a .301 batting average in 76 games last season.
Billy Butler, DH8/3/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Contrary to earlier reports, DH Billy Butler will get a start in the series at Citi Field. He'll start at first base on Saturday, according to Royals beat reporter Bob Dutton.
Insight: Regular first baseman Eric Hosmer will make a rare start in the outfield to accommodate Butler. Butler has been dealing with a neck injury, but is apparently well enough to play.
Eric Hosmer, 1B8/3/2013 11:32:00 AM
Description: Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer will get a rare start in the outfield as Kansas City squeezes DH Billy Butler into the lineup at first base against the Mets in New York.
Insight: Hosmer appeared in three games as a right fielder in 2012. He has been swinging a hot bat and we have seen his batting average rise to .285 with 11 HR and 47 RBI.
Billy Butler, DH8/2/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Billy Butler's absence this weekend is partly because the DH spot won't be available at Citi Field but also because he's been battling a sore neck. SOURCE: Kansas City Star
Insight: It's poor timing as Butler has been red-hot lately. He owns a .327 average since the All-Star break compared to just .271 before it. Maybe if he's feeling up to it he can make a pinch-hitting appearance later in the series.
Billy Butler, DH8/1/2013 9:15:00 PM
Description: According to the Kansas City Star, Royals DH Billy Butler will be out of the lineup for all three games this weekend while the team plays at New York against the Mets. Butler went 2-for-5 with two RBI Thursday and is batting .278 with nine homers and 55 RBI this season.
Insight: Butler has a career-high 51 percent groundball rate this season and is batting just .214 on grounders this season. That combined with an extreme dropoff in power has made him a fantasy disappointment. With no DH in the NL park, the team will leave Butler on the bench in favor of lefty-swinging first baseman Eric Hosmer because the Mets will start three right-handers.
James Shields, SP8/1/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: Royals starter James Shields worked around five walks to beat the Twins Thursday afternoon.
Insight: Shields allowed five hits and two earned runs over six innings and has won two straight starts. The right-hander is 6-7 with a 3.08 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in his first season with the Royals.

Description: Kansas City second baseman Chris Gets has landed on the disabled list.
Insight: He's battling a sprained left knee. Getz has been a colossal disappointment this season, hitting just .209 with one homer and 14 runs driven in. In the meantime, Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada will share reps at second base.
Alex Gordon, LF8/1/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon should get a boost Thursday with Scott Diamond throwing for Minnesota.
Insight: Gordon has always done well against the Twins lefthander (.455 AVG in 11 at bats). He's had a good series so far with four hits in nine at bats.
Lorenzo Cain, CF8/1/2013 11:21:00 AM
Description: Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain is back in the lineup Thursday against Minnesota. He's missed the team's last three games because of a groin injury.
Insight: Maybe Cain's .714 lifetime average versus Scott Diamond had something to do with the team's decision to bring him back today. Cain is only hitting .259 for the season but he should be able to improve that Thursday against Diamond.
