Phillies activate Galvis from DL

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Freddy Galvis, who went on the 15-day disabled list last month after he was diagnosed with the staph infection MRSA, was activated Friday by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Galvis, who batted .234 last year, had an abscess removed from his left knee on March 19 and tests confirmed two days later that he had the contagious infection that is sometimes resistant to antibiotics. He was placed on the disabled list March 27.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said at the time that Galvis had a cut or an abrasion that became an infection. The Phillies disinfected their spring training clubhouse as a precaution.

Galvis, who has played mostly in the infield in two seasons with the Phillies, has a career .230 batting average with a .269 on-base percentage, 43 RBI and 27 runs scored in 128 games.

He batted .167 with two triples during a three-game rehab assignment with Single-A Clearwater.

The Phillies optioned utility man Cesar Hernandez to Double-A Reading to make room for Galvis.
