National Hockey League Playoff Game Capsules
(Wednesday, April 16th)

Final Score: Montreal 5, Tampa Bay 4 (OT)

Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dale Weise tallied with 1:52 remaining in overtime, as the Montreal Canadiens got the jump on the Tampa Bay Lightning by a 5-4 count in Game 1 of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal. Weise was the recipient of a pass by Danny Briere from behind the goal line and to the edge of the right circle, where Weise netted his first career playoff marker with a successful wrister. Brian Gionta and Lars Eller picked up a goal and assist each for the Canadiens, while Tomas Plekanec and Thomas Vanek also lit the lamp for the third-place team in the Atlantic Division. Carey Price picked up the win despite stopping just 21-of-25 shots. Steven Stamkos scored twice, including the game-tying goal with just over 6 1/2 minutes left in regulation for the Lightning. Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn also produced offense in the setback. Subbing for the injured Ben Bishop, Anders Lindback's first career NHL playoff start went well despite the loss, as the rangy Swede came up with 39 saves. Game 2 in this best-of-seven set is scheduled for Friday in Tampa.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, Columbus 3

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Sutter scored the game winner 8:18 into the third period, as the Pittsburgh Penguins potted three unanswered goals en route to a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series from CONSOL Energy Center. The Blue Jackets built a 3-1 advantage under a minute into the second period, but Pittsburgh, which finished tied for the NHL's top power-play unit in the regular season, netted a pair of power-play goals 45 seconds apart to tie the game less than 2 1/2 minutes into the middle stanza. Sutter supplied the winner with a wrister from the right circle, while Marc- Andre Fleury made nine of his 31 saves over the final 20 minutes to help the Pens draw first blood in this best-of-seven set. Beau Bennett and Matt Niskanen each notched a goal and an assist, while Jussi Jokinen also lit the lamp for the Metropolitan Division champion Penguins, who went 0-5-0 against Columbus during the regular season. Jack Johnson collected a goal and an assist, while Derek MacKenzie and Mark Letestu tallied a goal apiece for the Blue Jackets, who qualified for the postseason for just the second time in franchise history, with the other appearance ending in a four-game sweep at the hands of Detroit in 2009. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots in the setback. Game 2 of this series is scheduled for Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Final Score: Anaheim 4, Dallas 3

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Getzlaf and Matt Beleskey each supplied a goal and an assist, as the Anaheim Ducks scored the game's first four goals before surviving a scare down the stretch to claim a 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of a Western Conference quarterfinal clash at Honda Center. Kyle Palmieri and Mathieu Perreault tallied a goal apiece during the early Anaheim flurry, which staked the West's top seed to a 4-0 lead just over nine minutes into the middle stanza. Jamie Benn and Colton Sceviour scored 1:33 apart later in the second to slice the Stars' deficit in half before Tyler Seguin's tip-in with 6:07 left in the third brought the visitors within one. However, rookie Frederik Andersen, who got the start in net for Anaheim over Jonas Hiller, turned away all comers over the final six minutes to help the Ducks grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Andersen finished with 32 saves in his postseason debut for the Ducks, who used a 54-20-8 regular-season record -- the best in franchise history -- to secure the top spot in the West. Sceviour also added an assist in the setback, while Kari Lehtonen allowed four goals on 35 shots for the Stars, who claimed the West's second wild card spot to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
