Final Score: Seattle 20, San Francisco 17
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Olindo Mare's 30-yard field goal as time expired gave the Seattle Seahawks a 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Matt Hasselbeck went 25-for-34 with 198 yards and two scores while Justin Forsett and Deion Branch each caught a score for the Seahawks (5-7), who have won two straight. Nate Burleson had five catches for 54 yards and had a big punt return to set up the game-winning field goal.
"Hopefully this is the start of the direction we want to go," said Seahawks coach Jim Mora. "It's only a positive when things like this happen. It gives you confidence."
Alex Smith went 27-for-45 with 310 yards and two scores while Vernon Davis finished the game with six catches for 111 yards and a score for the 49ers (5-7), who have dropped two of their last three. Josh Morgan had six catches for 56 yards and a score for the 49ers, who host Arizona next Monday night...
"We are going to come out next Monday night we are going to rock, we are going to fight, we are going to kick, we are going to hopefully win the game we have to fight," said 49ers coach Mike Singletary. "The mind-set here was to win."
The game was tied after Joe Nedney's field goal with 2:58 to play and the teams exchanged punts, but Seattle got a 21-yard return from Burleson to give the team the ball at its own 48 with 21 seconds to play.
A defensive holding call on the first play was followed by a float pass down the right sideline to Deon Butler for 32 yards. A three-yard run by Julius Jones to put the ball in the middle of the field was followed by Mare's field goal through the middle to win the game.
With the score tied in the fourth and San Francisco in Seattle territory, Frank Gore had the ball punched out of his hands and Josh Wilson recovered it and took it back 43 yards to the San Francisco 41.
Passing plays of nine yards to Burleson and 15 yards to Forsett, coupled with a two-yard carry by Forsett got the ball into the red zone. However, the drive stalled at the seven-yard line and a 25-yard field goal from Mare gave the Seahawks a 17-14 lead with 5:30 to play.
The 49ers, though, got a 33-yard kickoff return from Morgan to start their next drive. On 2nd-and-14, Smith moved the chains with an 18-yard pass to Brandon Jones. On the next play, a pass interference call to Seattle moved the ball 28 yards. However, the drive stalled at the 16-yard line and Nedney's 34- yard field goal tied the game with 2:57 left.
San Francisco drew first blood in the game on a four-play drive that was finished on a 33-yard touchdown catch by Davis from Smith for a 7-0 lead with a little over six minutes to play in the first.
Seattle was held to a three-and-out on its next touch, but Arnaz Battle fumbled the punt and the Seahawks recovered at the 13-yard line. Three plays later, Hasselbeck hooked up with Branch on a seven-yard score to tie the game with under four minutes to play in the first.
Holding the ball to start the second quarter, Seattle took the lead as Hasselbeck hit Forsett over the middle for a screen pass and he took it into the end zone from eight yards out for a 14-7 lead with 10:06 left in the first half. The drive covered 87 yards over 12 plays and ate up close to six minutes.
San Francisco, though, needed just four plays to answer as Smith and Davis combined for a 42-yard play and Morgan followed with a leaping catch in the right corner of the end zone on a 22-yard reception with 7:40 left in the first half.
The third quarter featured nothing but punts as the offenses struggled and the game turned into a battle of field position.
