Houston led from start to finish, scoring the first 12 points of the game. Harden drilled a three and added a layup during the spurt, which Howard capped with bank shot.
The Rockets led by as many as 15 in the period and settled for a 31-24 edge after 12 minutes. Indiana pulled within two midway through the second on a Luis Scola layup, but Houston answered with the next five and went into the break with a 61-55 advantage.
