Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexei Ramirez scored from second on shortstop Xander Bogaerts' throwing error in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Chicago White Sox over the Boston Red Sox, 2-1, in the opener of a three- game series.
"It's cold weather, but that's no excuse for that play," Bogaerts said.
Burke Badenhop (0-2), who recorded the final out in the eighth, stayed on to start the ninth for Boston. After Alejandro De Aza was caught stealing second, Ramirez singled to left. Badenhop got Tyler Flowers to go down looking before handing the ball over to Chris Capuano, who walked Adam Eaton. Marcus Semien then hit a grounder to Bogaerts, whose errant throw to first allowed the game- winning run to score.
"There were two outs so I was going all the way with two outs, so my idea was to go ahead and get to home plate regardless of what happened," Ramirez said.
Daniel Webb (1-0) picked up his first win in the big leagues after stranding men on first and second in the top of the ninth. Erik Johnson got the start for Chicago and allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings.
Adam Dunn hit a solo homer for the White Sox, who have won two in a row.
Boston starter Jake Peavy gave up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks over six full frames. Tuesday marked his first start at U.S. Cellular Field since being traded by the White Sox last summer.
Daniel Nava hit a solo homer for the Red Sox, who lost first baseman Mike Napoli to a dislocated finger in the ninth inning. After reaching on a walk, Napoli tried taking second on a steal. He slid into the base and his left hand jammed into the bag. His left ring finger appeared to be out of place.
Dustin Pedroia, who has inflammation in his left wrist, came on to pinch-run for Napoli and moved to second base. Mike Carp entered at first base.
Dunn homered to right in the second to make it 1-0 Chicago.
The Red Sox put men on second and third in the third, but Bogaerts struck out swinging to end the inning.
Nava hit a no-doubter to right in the fourth to make it 1-1.
The White Sox had a chance to take the lead back in the sixth. With runners on second and third, De Aza flied out to end the threat.
Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary of the tragic Boston Marathon bombings and the 67th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier ... Pedroia was given a cortisone injection and is aiming to return on Wednesday. He missed Sunday's series finale at the New York Yankees ... White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia underwent successful surgery Tuesday morning to repair a torn labrum and avulsion fracture in his left shoulder ... Ramirez went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
