Hunter, Tigers rout Royals 16-4
Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Torii Hunter had three hits, including a homer, and knocked in three runs as the Detroit Tigers rolled to a 16-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night to open a four-game series.
Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez also drove in three runs for the Tigers, who improved to 15-5 in their last 20 games and increased their lead over the Royals to 5 1/2 games for first place in the AL Central.
They plated a season-high 16 runs just two days after scoring 14 in a win over the Dodgers on Tuesday, when they had a season-best 20 hits.
Drew Smyly (5-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the win, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk.
"We just wanted to come in here and finish (the first half of the season) on a really good note," said Smyly. "We have three more games but it's a good way to start the series off."
Billy Butler and Eric Hosmer homered for the Royals.
Jeremy Guthrie (5-8) lasted just four-plus innings for Kansas City. The right- hander was charged with eight runs on eight hits and three walks after giving up six runs and 11 hits in four innings against Cleveland on Saturday.
The Royals bullpen gave up 11 hits and eight runs.
"We didn't pitch good tonight. That's the bottom line," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "And that's why they scored a bunch of runs."
The Tigers plated 11 over the fourth and fifth innings to take a 14-2 lead.
They loaded the bases in the fourth after Eugenio Suarez was hit by a pitch, Don Kelly singled and Austin Jackson walked. Ian Kinsler followed with a sacrifice fly and Cabrera made it 6-1 with a two-run double off the left-field wall.
Butler pulled a high-and-outside pitch over the wall in left leading off the bottom of the fourth for his third homer of the season, but Hunter started an eight-run rally in the fifth with his 12th home run, a long blast to left. He also had an RBI single in the flurry.
Guthrie came out after Nick Castellanos singled. Suarez hit a two-run double, Kinsler had an RBI single, two runs scored after Royals left fielder Raul Ibanez misplayed Martinez's hit and Castellanos added an RBI double in the inning.
Martinez hit an RBI double in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Smyly came out after Hosmer's two-run blast in the bottom of the inning, his sixth homer of the season.
Jackson hit a leadoff single to spark a three-run first inning for the Tigers, scoring later on Cabrera's ground out. Hunter had an RBI hit and Castellanos made it 3-0 with a sac fly.
Alcides Escobar hit a two-out single, stole second base and scored on Jarrod Dyson's single in the second inning for Kansas City's first run.
The Tigers are 7-3 against the Royals this season, including 4-0 in Kansas City. They swept a three-game series in KC from May 2-4 ... The Tigers are 3-7 in Smyly's last 10 starts.
