Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
To go one or two months without your best player, in this case superstar guard Chris Paul, is usually a recipe for disaster to any fantasy lineup. But if you act quickly, you may be able to lessen the effect of losing one of the top-three fantasy players in the NBA.
To do this, you have to immediately pick up New Orleans back up point guard Darren Collison. He's likely still available, as when I picked him up last night, he was still owned in less than 30% of all leagues.
But he won't be available for long!
As fantasy owners wake up to the news that Paul may be out for up to eight weeks with a knee problem, they will all began to look for ways to help their rosters. And the most obvious choice is the rookie Collison, who in Paul's absence on Saturday night played 47 minutes, scoring 17 points, pulling down six rebounds and dishing out 18 assists.
This will be his second stint this season as the Hornets starting point guard. Paul was sidelined between November 14th and December 3rd and Collison played well during that stretch.
Over that eight-game span, Collison averaged 14.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg and 6.4 apg in 31 minutes of playing time. That's not exactly Paul numbers (20.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 11.2 apg), but it's still a solid "back up plan" at this point in the season when the waiver wire pickings' are pretty slim.
But you must hurry because by the end of the day, everyone will have the news about Paul and will be thinking the same thing you are.
