Dallas Cowboys Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Joseph Randle, RB5/11/2013 2:21:00 PM
Description: Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Joseph Randle will be expected to fill the Felix Jones role this season, backing up starter DeMarco Murray.
Insight: Randle will begin OTAs on a limited basis after undergoing right thumb surgery. Given Murray's inability to play 16 games in either of his first two seasons, Randle will be an important "handcuff' for fantasy owners.
Dez Bryant, WR4/9/2013 1:11:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant told an El Paso radio station that his broken finger is feeling great and he's been catching balls from quarterback Tony Romo.
Insight: Bryant played much better in the second half of the 2012-13 season despite the finger injury catching 50 balls for 879 yards and 10 touchdowns over the final eight games. It is the level of performance that was expected from him since he arrived in 2010. At fantasyfootballcalculator.com he's being selected as the fourth wideout off the board.
Tony Romo, QB3/29/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: The Cowboys inked QB Tony Romo to a six-year, $108 million contract extension through 2019. The deal includes $55 million in guaranteed money.
Insight: Romo finished third in the NFL last season with a career-high 4,903 yards and has thrown at least 26 touchdown passes over his last five healthy seasons. The continued development of Dez Bryant should help Romo remain a top-10 fantasy signal-caller for the next few years.
Miles Austin, WR2/28/2013 10:55:00 PM
Description: Miles Austin was one of four Cowboys to have his contract restructured on Thursday.
Insight: Cornerback Brandon Carr, linebacker DeMarcus Ware and tight end Jason Witten were the others. The contract restructuring frees up $23 million and it puts Dallas back under the salary cap. Austin, once the focal point of the Cowboys' aerial attack, played more of a secondary role last season as Dez Bryant blossomed into a star (career-high 1,382 yards and 12 TD).
DeMarcus Ware, LB1/10/2013 3:46:00 PM
Description: Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware is hoping he will be cleared to return for training camp after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder on Thursday.
Insight: Ware basically played the final few games of the season with one arm after tearing his labrum and hyperextending his elbow. Ware still finished the season with 11.5 sacks, but only had 1.5 in his final six games. A healthy Ware is always a threat to tally 15-20 sacks in a season.
Miles Austin, WR1/9/2013 8:46:00 PM
Description: According to DallasCowboys.com, wide receiver Miles Austin's roster spot for next season is "far from a sure thing."
Insight: The report also said that the Cowboys could look to restructure the remaining four years on Austin's contract. Austin finished the 2012 season with 943 yards on 66 catches.
DeMarcus Ware, LB1/9/2013 8:28:00 PM
Description: ESPN Dallas reports that Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware underwent surgery on his right shoulder last week.
Insight: Ware should be fully recovered before the start of next season. He finished the 2012 campaign (his eighth season with Dallas) with 56 tackles and 11.5 sacks.
Dez Bryant, WR1/8/2013 10:07:00 AM
Description: Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant will have surgery on his broken finger Tuesday.
Insight: Bryant played much better in the second half of the season and the finger injury didn't effect his play. He totaled 879 yards and 10 touchdowns over the final eight games of the season. Bryant should be ready for offseason OTAs and training camp.
Tony Romo, QB1/2/2013 5:33:00 PM
Description: Cowboys QB Tony Romo may have cost the Cowboys a playoff spot with his three interceptions Sunday but he still finished the season with a career-high 4,903 passing yards.
Insight: That was good enough for third in the NFL. While Romo turned the ball over a career-high 22 times (19 picks, three fumbles), he also had 28 touchdown passes. He placed eighth among quarterbacks in standard scoring leagues after being drafted 10th at the position by fantasy owners.
Dez Bryant, WR12/31/2012 5:44:00 PM
Description: Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant spent the night in the hospital and was seen using crutches on Monday.
Insight: That would explain why Bryant wasn't on the field for the last few minutes of Sunday's loss to the Redskins. Bryant's back and his broken finger should be fully healed by the time training camp rolls around in July so fantasy owners shouldn't be overly concerned.
Tony Romo, QBCold12/31/2012 1:31:00 PM
Description: Cowboys QB Tony Romo probably didn't sleep too well on Sunday night. His interception with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter set up a Redskins touchdown and may have cost Dallas the game.
Insight: This isn't the first time we've seen Romo fold under pressure. The Dallas quarterback is now 1-6 all-time in elimination games. He finished the night with two touchdowns, three interceptions and 218 yards passing as the Cowboys ended the year 8-8 for the second straight season.
Miles Austin, WRCold12/31/2012 1:22:00 PM
Description: Dallas wideout Miles Austin was held without a catch during Sunday night's season-ending loss to the Redskins.
Insight: Austin tweaked his ankle early in the game and never really recovered. Tony Romo only targeted Austin three times in the game. Austin finished the year with 943 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 16 games.
Dez Bryant, WR12/31/2012 1:18:00 PM
Description: Dallas wideout Dez Bryant missed the final minutes of Sunday's loss to the Redskins while battling back spasms.
Insight: Bryant was limited to just four catches for 71 yards thanks to the strong play of Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall. Sunday's game was the first time Bryant has failed to score a touchdown in a game since November 4th when he was held to just one catch for 15 yards in a loss to the Falcons. Bryant's 1,392 receiving yards in 2012 ranked sixth in the NFL.
DeMarcus Ware, LB12/25/2012 9:18:00 AM
Description: Dallas outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware is dealing with a shoulder injury, but is expected to play in Sunday night's big matchup with Washington.
Insight: Ware, who has 11.5 sacks this season, was only on the field for about 62 percent of the plays in last weekend's overtime loss to New Orleans. With the division championship on the line, expect Ware to be on the field chasing Robert Griffin III all over the field.
Jason Witten, TE12/23/2012 5:21:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's six catches Sunday gave him 103 on the season, the first time he has reached 100 receptions in his career. It's the most catches in NFL season by a tight end, surpassing Tony Gonzalez' 102.
Insight: Witten's season started slow after he battled a ruptured spleen in the preseason. He caught just eight balls on 20 targets for 76 yards over his first three games but has reeled in 95 catches for 907 yards in his last 12.
Dez Bryant, WRHot12/23/2012 5:19:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant hasn't been slowed by his broken index finger one bit. He had a career day Sunday, catching nine passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Saints.
Insight: Bryant manhandled New Orleans' defensive backs like he has done so many defenders during his breakout season. The third-year receiver has tallied 808 yards, 48 receptions and 10 touchdowns over his last seven games.
Kevin Ogletree, WRCold12/22/2012 11:04:00 AM
Description: Dallas wideout Kevin Ogletree didn't practice on Friday because of an illness and is now questionable for Sunday's game against New Orleans.
Insight: Ogletree has averaged just 13.8 ypg in his last four appearances. Even if Ogletree is healthy, he's not a fantasy option.
DeMarco Murray, RB12/19/2012 12:53:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back DeMarco Murray was held out of Wednesday's practice, but is expected to be ready for Sunday's game with New Orleans.
Insight: Murray has been a workhorse since returning to the lineup in Week 13 and is just getting a regular day off. Facing a Saints' team yielding 146 ypg on the ground, Murray is a must start in Week 16.
Dez Bryant, WR12/19/2012 12:35:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant came out of Sunday's game without any further injury to his left hand and was back at practice on Wednesday.
Insight: Bryant was obviously protecting the broken finger, but he still managed to produce double-digit points for fantasy owners with four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. It is the sixth consecutive game he's caught at least one touchdown. He'll be ready to go against New Orleans in Week 16.
Dez Bryant, WR12/17/2012 11:10:00 AM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant came out of Sunday's game without any further injury to his left hand.
Morris Claiborne, CB12/16/2012 11:08:00 AM
Description: Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne is out for Sunday's game against the Steelers. He's still recovering from a concussion he suffered in last week's win over Cincinnati.
Insight: The rookie out of LSU has recorded 40 tackles this season while hauling in one interception. If he passes his concussion tests and gets a few practices in next week, he could be available for next Sunday's game against New Orleans.
Dez Bryant, WR12/16/2012 10:49:00 AM
Description: ESPN's Ed Werder reports Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant will play Sunday against the Steelers but he also said everytime Bryant touches the ball, it will be "extremely painful" for him.
Insight: That doesn't sound promising but Werder insists he should still get plenty of targets from quarterback Tony Romo. It's possible Bryant could reinjure his broken finger or decide halfway through the game that the pain is too much for him but the possibility of a touchdown (Bryant has scored in each of his last five games) is too great for fantasy owners to consider benching him this week.
Dez Bryant, WR12/13/2012 9:52:00 AM
Description: ESPN has reported that Dallas receiver Dez Bryant will be on the field for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh despite a broken left index finger.
Insight: Bryant has decided to hold off on surgery and continue to play through the injury. It's an admirable decision albeit a risky one. Dez caught a touchdown with the bad finger last week and we're guessing he should be able to do the same thing this week against a Steelers secondary that got ripped apart by Philip Rivers last Sunday. Right now, the Cowboys are working on a splint that Bryant can use on his finger during the game. He's expected to return to practice on Thursday.
Dez Bryant, WR12/11/2012 1:02:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant, who has been diagnosed with a broken left index finger, will decide whether to have surgery or try and play with the injury, according to owner Jerry Jones.
Insight: Bryant has repeatedly said he wants to play, but there is some long-term risk if he does. Bryant is in the midst of a five-game, touchdown-scroing streak (seven TDs) and playing as well as he ever has.
Dwayne Harris, WR12/11/2012 12:28:00 PM
Description: As we wait for the final word on Dez Bryant's injured finger, it should be noted that wideout Dwayne Harris played 36 snaps last Sunday to 13 for Kevin Ogletree.
Insight: While most of Bryant's targets would probable end up going to Jason Witten and Miles Austin if you are searching for a third option it's more likely Harris than Ogletree.
Dez Bryant, WR12/10/2012 9:32:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant has been diagnosed with a broken left index finger according to Calvin Watkins from ESPN Dallas.
Insight: That's not as bad as the "torn ligament" reports we were hearing earlier. It's been suggested that Bryant could play with tape on his fingers. With the Cowboys still very much in the playoff hunt, they might be tempted to keep him on the field. We're not sure what his status is for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh but it's way too early to rule him out.
Dez Bryant, WR12/10/2012 4:43:00 PM
Description: The Cowboys fear that receiver Dez Bryant will miss the rest of the season with torn ligaments in his finger. Bryant will see a hand specialist to determine his fate. Coach Jason Garrett said Bryant is "50-50" to play again this season. SOURCE: David Moore, Dallas Morning News and Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com
Insight: Bryant was finally coming into his own as an impact No. 1 receiver, averaging 105 yards per game and catching seven touchdowns in his last five games. Miles Austin and Jason Witten get boosts in fantasy value but there's really nothing Bryant owners can do since Kevin Ogletree has been splitting third receiver reps with Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley.
Miles Austin, WRCold12/9/2012 5:07:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin saw a team-high 10 targets Sunday but could only turn them into four catches for 46 yards.
Insight: Austin is only averaging 36.4 yards over his last five games. After catching four touchdowns in his first six games, the receiver has one in his last seven.
Dez Bryant, WRHot12/9/2012 5:05:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has hauled in seven touchdowns over the last five games. He crossed 1,000 yards for the first time in his three-year career Sunday.
Insight: Bryant had just 50 yards receiving on four receptions Sunday against Cincinnati but grabbed a 27-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
DeMarco Murray, RB12/9/2012 5:04:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back DeMarco Murray was held to 2.5 ypc and finished with 53 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals Sunday.
Insight: Murray has crossed the goal line in each of the last two games since returning from a foot injury. The Steelers will present another tough matchup for the Cowboys RB in Week 15.
Tony Romo, QB12/9/2012 5:00:00 PM
Description: Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo completed 25-of-43 for 268 yards but only had one touchdown. He was picked off once and sacked three times.
Insight: Romo was coming off two straight three-touchdown games. This wasn't what fantasy owners were looking for in the first week of the fantasy playoffs. Romo's matchup with Pittsburgh in Week 15 looks brutal on paper but Philip Rivers was able to navigate the Steelers defense Sunday.
DeMarco Murray, RB12/5/2012 4:23:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back DeMarco Murray was held out of Wednesday's practice, but is expected to play Sunday against Cincinnati. He'll return to the practice field on Thursday.
Insight: Murray totaled 102 yards, including 83 rushing, in his first game back since Week 6. he came out of the game without any further injury to his foot.
Tony Romo, QBHot12/3/2012 9:51:00 AM
Description: Dallas QB Tony Romo had his best game of the season Sunday against Philadelphia. He completed 81.5 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and a 150.5 quarterback rating.
Insight: Romo has averaged 352.3 yards per game in his last three outings. He's now third in the NFL in passing yards behind Matthew Stafford and Drew Brees.
DeMarco Murray, RB12/3/2012 9:43:00 AM
Description: Dallas halfback DeMarco Murray registered 83 rushing yards and a touchdown Sunday in his return from a foot injury.
Insight: Murray broke off a couple long runs on Sunday and didn't seem hampered at all by the foot issues that had kept him out the previous six weeks. Felix Jones will have little fantasy value going forward now that Murray is back at 100 percent.
Dez Bryant, WRHot12/3/2012 9:35:00 AM
Description: Dez Bryant shined in a 38-33 win over Philadelphia on Sunday night. The Cowboys receiver ended the night with 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Insight: Bryant has found the end zone six times in his last four games. He's now hauled in 68.9 percent of the passes Tony Romo has thrown to him this season, a noticeable improvement from last year when Bryant caught just 61.2 percent of his targets.
DeMarco Murray, RB12/2/2012 11:04:00 AM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) is expected to play Sunday night versus Philadelphia, but Adam Schefter is reporting that the Cowboys will limit his workload.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of sprained foot so this shouldn't be a surprise to fantasy owners. Murray and Felix Jones should share the carries until Murray is completely recovered.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/29/2012 6:53:00 PM
Description: "All signs point" to Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) playing Sunday night versus Philadelphia. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of sprained foot. He practiced Thursday for the second straight day on a limited basis, but was able to make progress on Wednesday's workout. He's still a major risk since Dallas doesn't play until Sunday night.
Miles Austin, WR11/28/2012 2:00:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin is on the practice field Wednesday, but doing rehab work on the side, according to Todd Archer.
Insight: Austin had stayed relatively healthy this season, but didn't finish the Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. If Austin can't suit up for Sunday against Philadelphia, Kevin Ogletree could be a viable wideout option.
Kevin Ogletree, WR11/28/2012 1:59:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Kevin Ogletree (concussion) returned to -practice on Wednesday.
Insight: Ogletree hasn't done much since the opening weekend, but if Miles Austin's hip keeps him from playing then he could turn into a solid fantasy option in Week 13.
Felix Jones, RB11/28/2012 1:43:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back Felix Jones (knees) is not at Wednesday's practice.
Insight: Jones is making a habit of not practicing, but playing in games. The real question is whether DeMarco Murray returns to the field. If Murray plays, Jones' fantasy value takes a huge hit. If Murray sits again Jones has solid value - he's posted double-digits in his last four starts.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/28/2012 1:38:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back DeMarco Murray (foot) is at Wednesday's practice doing drills with the running backs, according to Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of an injured foot and remains week-to-week. He is still a huge question mark for fantasy owners who want to start him in Week 13. Stay tuned.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/27/2012 5:33:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) may practice this week but a source told ESPN's Ed Werder that his availability to play against the Eagles is not guaranteed.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of an injured foot and remains week-to-week. Felix Jones, who has been limited with a knee ailment of his own, has managed to score double-digit fantasy points in four straight games but has failed to rush for 50-plus yards in five of the six games Murray has missed. We wouldn't count on Murray playing in Week 13.
Miles Austin, WR11/27/2012 4:59:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin is expected to play Sunday night against the Eagles. SOURCE: Ed Werder, ESPN
Insight: Austin had remained relatively healthy this season left Thursday's game against Washington early with injuries. He's expected to recover in time for Sunday's game, a source told Werder.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/26/2012 3:19:00 PM
Description: Unlike his owner Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys vice-president Stephen Jones is confident that running back DeMarco Murray (foot) can be ready for Week 13 against Philadelphia, according to a report in the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of an injured foot and remains week-to-week. Felix Jones, who has been limited with a knee ailment of his own, has managed to score double digit fantasy points in Murray's absence, but Dallas is averaging just 61.3 ypg on the ground in the six games he has missed.
Miles Austin, WR11/26/2012 11:47:00 AM
Description: Cowboys wideout Miles Austin is dealing with both hamstring and hip injuries. SOURCE: Calvin Watkins, ESPNDallas.com
Insight: Austin had remained relatively healthy this season but suffered a hip injury in Thursday's game versus Washington and didn't return. The receiver had to miss six games last season due to multiple hamstring injuries so it's obviously bad news that he's dealing with another one. Dallas signed receiver Anthony Armstrong Monday with both Austin and Kevin Ogletree (concussion) in doubt for Week 13.
Bruce Carter, LB11/26/2012 11:18:00 AM
Description: The Cowboys placed linebacker Bruce Carter on the IR ending his 2012 season.
Insight: Dallas has now lost both its starting inside linebackers (Carter and Sean Lee) and will likely be vulnerable to the run down the stretch.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/23/2012 11:59:00 AM
Description: According to owner Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) may not be ready for Week 13 against Philadelphia.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of an injured foot and remains week-to-week. Felix Jones, who has been limited with a knee ailment of his own, has managed to score double digit fantasy points in Murray's absence. Still, Jones doesn't have the upside that Murray brings to the table when healthy.
Miles Austin, WR11/22/2012 6:20:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wideout Miles Austin left Thursday's game with a right hip strain, according to ESPN Dallas. He won't return, according to Redskins beat reporter Grant Paulsen. Austin had zero catches on two targets in the game.
Insight: Austin has remained relatively healthy this season, but his production has slipped after the first four games this season. In his last six games, he's had just one touchdown and one 100-yard game.
Felix Jones, RB11/22/2012 3:37:00 PM
Description: Cowboys halfback Felix Jones (knees) is active Thursday against the Redskins. DeMarco Murray (foot) is out again.
Insight: Jones is likely to lead a committee that also includes Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner. Jones has found the end zone in two straight weeks and he'll need to do so again in order to have value in Week 11. We'd stay away from Dallas' RB situation until Murray returns.
Felix Jones, RB11/20/2012 6:28:00 PM
Description: Cowboys halfback Felix Jones missed practice on Tuesday because of a sore knee.
Insight: He was originally slated to be the team's starter Thursday against Washington but now his availability is somewhat in question. Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner both saw first team reps in practice on Tuesday. They'll probably split carries Thursday if Jones can't play.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/20/2012 1:00:00 PM
Description: Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) didn't practice Monday or Tuesday and is not expected to play versus Washington Thursday on Thanksgiving.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of an injured foot and remains week-to-week. Felix Jones was limited with a knee ailment but should be ready for Thursday.
Kevin Ogletree, WR11/20/2012 11:35:00 AM
Description: Cowboys receiver Kevin Ogletree is doubtful for Thursday's game against Washington due to a concussion suffered in the game against Cleveland.
Insight: Ogletree caught the one pass thrown his way for a 26-yard completion and also rushed the ball once for five yards, but he's officially not a fantasy option unless Miles Austin gets hurt again.
Phillip Tanner, RB11/20/2012 11:33:00 AM
Description: Cowboys running back Phillip Tanner will likely play the understudy role to starter Felix Jones for Thursday's game with Washington.
Insight: Jones is also dealing with a sore knee, so Tanner may see more snaps than normal, but we still think Jones is the only reliable fantasy option in the Dallas backfield this week.
Lance Dunbar, RB11/20/2012 11:30:00 AM
Description: Dallas Cowboys halfback Lance Dunbar underwent a minor knee procedure after Sunday's win over Cleveland and is doubtful for Thursday's game against Washington
Insight: With DeMarco Murray not expected to play and Dunbar doubtful, the backup role for Felix Jones will likely fall to Phillip Tanner.
Felix Jones, RB11/20/2012 11:27:00 AM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones (knee) banged up his knee against Cleveland, but was back on the practice field Monday. He's listed as probable for Thursday's game in Dallas.
Insight: With a short work week due to the Thanksgiving Day game against Washington, it's good to see he's practicing right away, even on a limited basis. He'll likely start as the Cowboys give DeMarco Murray another week of rest.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/19/2012 6:31:00 PM
Description: Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) didn't practice Monday and is not expected to play versus Washington Thursday on Thanksgiving. SOURCE: Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: Murray hasn't played since Oct. 14 because of an injured foot and remains week-to-week. Felix Jones was limited with a knee ailment but should be ready for Thursday.
Lance Dunbar, RB11/19/2012 3:49:00 PM
Description: ESPN Dallas is reporting that Cowboys halfback Lance Dunbar underwent a minor knee procedure after Sunday's win over Cleveland.
Insight: This puts his status in question for Thursday's game against Washington. Dunbar isn't really a usable fantasy player anyway, especially with DeMarco Murray slated to return from injury any week now. For now, Felix Jones will handle most of the rushing work for Dallas with Phillip Tanner getting a carry or two here and there as a change of pace back.
Dez Bryant, WR11/18/2012 7:15:00 PM
Description: Dallas wideout Dez Bryant hauled in 12 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown Sunday in an overtime win against Cleveland.
Insight: Starting Dez is always a gamble but today, he really delivered the goods. He's now on pace to finish the season with 1,176 receiving yards, which would be a new career-high.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/16/2012 11:36:00 AM
Description: Injured Dallas tailback DeMarco Murray is still listed as doubtful with most experts expecting the Cowboys to give him one more week of rest.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since October 14th because of an injured foot. Felix Jones will continue to see most of the carries in the Cowboys' backfield while Murray remains sidelined and he's been solid as the replacement posting double-digit fantasy points in three of five weeks including the last two.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/12/2012 9:47:00 PM
Description: Injured Dallas halfback DeMarco Murray might not be able to return for Week 11 according to Clarence Hill from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Murray hasn't played since October 14th because of an injured foot. Felix Jones will continue to see most of the carries in the Cowboys' backfield while Murray remains sidelined.
Dez Bryant, WRCold11/11/2012 7:55:00 PM
Description: After catching just one pass against the Falcons last week, Dez Bryant had three receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown on five targets Sunday against the Eagles.
Insight: Bryant was second on the team in targets to Jason Witten (8-47). Miles Austin finished with just two catches for 32 yards and running back Felix Jones caught Tony Romo's other TD pass.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/9/2012 4:48:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) may have participated in a brief individual drill Thursday, but he will miss the Week 10 game with Philadelphia.
Insight: This bodes well for Murray's Week 11 status, however. Felix Jones and Lance Dunbar figure to get the majority of the opportunities.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/8/2012 3:24:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) participated in a brief individual drills Thursday. SOURCE: ESPN Dallas
Insight: Murray is not going to play in Week 10 against the Eagles but this bodes well for his Week 11 status. "No question, he's starting to get better," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "He's got to be 100 percent before we put him out there." Murray has missed three straight games and Sunday will be his fourth.
Felix Jones, RB11/6/2012 11:57:00 AM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones is likely to be the starter in Week 10 against Philadelphia as the latest rumors concerning DeMarco Murray playing Sunday are not encouraging.
Insight: Jones managed to reach double-digit fantasy points thanks to a pair of garbage-time receptions worth 41 yards. Jones led the Cowboys backfield with 14 touches followed by Lance Dunbar with eight and Phillip Tanner one.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/6/2012 11:51:00 AM
Description: Despite words from Jerry Jones that Dallas running back DeMarco Murray might be able to return to the field in Week 10, indications are that he'll miss the game with Philadelphia.
Insight: Murray has yet to practice and coach Jason Garrett wants to see that as well as his passing all the physical tests before he's ready to put his star back into the lineup. It appears it will be another week of Felix Jones, Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner.
Lance Dunbar, RB11/5/2012 1:51:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar, not Phillip Tanner, shared the backfield workload with Felix Jones on Sunday night against Atlanta. Dunbar rushed eight times for 26 yards.
Insight: Heading into Sunday's contest, Dunbar had one carry on the season. Whether Dunbar gets more opportunities will be determined by the health of DeMarco Murray. If Murray returns in Week 10 we won't likely see much of Mr. Dunbar again.
Dez Bryant, WRCold11/5/2012 9:45:00 AM
Description: Banged up Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant was ineffective Sunday against the Falcons. He caught just one pass for 15 yards.
Insight: Tony Romo targeted Bryant on four occasions. It's the second time in three games Bryant has failed to reach 20 yards receiving. You might want to stay away from Dez until his injured hip is closer to 100 percent.
Dez Bryant, WR11/4/2012 6:13:00 PM
Description: It appears Dallas receiver Dez Bryant will be available for Sunday night's matchup against the Falcons. Bryant had been listed as questionable because of a hip injury.
Insight: Dez gave fantasy owners a heart attack by slipping and aggravating his hip injury during Friday's walk-through but it looks like he has recovered enough to play on Sunday. Atlanta has been pretty good against the pass this season so this might not be one of Bryant's better fantasy days.
Dez Bryant, WR11/4/2012 11:58:00 AM
Description: Dez Bryant's status for Sunday night's game in Atlanta is now in doubt after the Dallas wideout aggravated his hip injury at the team's walk-through on Friday. SOUCE: ESPN Dallas
Insight: The Cowboys don't play until 8:20 so this news should put Dez owners in a very uncomfortable position. If you already own Kevin Ogletree as a handcuff to Bryant, now would be the time to use him.
Felix Jones, RB11/4/2012 11:15:00 AM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones (bruised knee, shoulder) is expected to play Sunday night against Atlanta.
Insight: Jones has yet to prove that he can carry the load by himself and will split backfield time with Phillip Tanner.
Dez Bryant, WR11/2/2012 5:24:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant (hip) is questionable for Sunday's game after participating in just the walk-through portion of Friday's practice. He hasn't practiced all week, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Bryant is dealing with a hip injury he suffered on his near touchdown at the end of Sunday's game against the Giants. He could be a game-time call for Week 9.
Dez Bryant, WR11/1/2012 10:45:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant (hip) didn't practice Thursday but he's still likely to play.
Insight: Bryant has dealt with a variety of injuries this season. He's been playing well as of late, catching 28 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns in the last four games.
DeMarco Murray, RB11/1/2012 2:55:00 PM
Description: Dallas halfback DeMarco Murray won't play Sunday night against Atlanta. He's still recovering from a foot injury.
Insight: Murray missed practice again on Thursday and remains week-to-week. Felix Jones is also banged up (shoulder and knee issues) so it might be a good idea for fantasy owners to snag third-stringer Phillip Tanner off the waiver wire ahead of Sunday's 8:20 kickoff.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/31/2012 2:05:00 PM
Description: Cowboys starting running back DeMarco Murray (foot) did not practice Wednesday, according to Todd Archer.
Insight: Murray was ruled out for Week 8 against the Giants, but the team is hoping he can return for Week 9. Until we see him on the practice field, fantasy owners shouldn't expect to see him in a game. Stay tuned.
Sean Lee, LB10/31/2012 10:05:00 AM
Description: Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee underwent season-ending surgery on his right big toe on Tuesday, reports Nick Eatman of CBSSports.com.
Insight: Lee was the Cowboys best linebacker, and had accumulated 57 tackles and three passes deflected in six games this season. Dallas will be short-handed at the position unless they make a trade before the Thursday deadline.
Felix Jones, RB10/28/2012 3:10:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones (bruised knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Giants.
Insight: Jones may split time with Phillip Tanner after getting banged up in Week 7 against the Panthers. He's a risky play this week against the Giants.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/25/2012 10:38:00 AM
Description: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't expect DeMarco Murray's foot injury to be a long-term situation, according to DallasCowboys.com.
Insight: Murray has been ruled out for Week 8 against the Giants but Jones said, "I think we'll have him back in the foreseeable future." Keep in mind that Jones is not a doctor and it's in his best interest to keep the spirits of the fan base high. Murray was still on crutches Wednesday.
Felix Jones, RB10/25/2012 10:04:00 AM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones (bruised knee) is expected to start Sunday; his absence in Wednesday's practice was for precautionary reasons, according to ESPN Dallas.
Insight: Jones may split time with Phillip Tanner after getting banged up in Week 7 against the Panthers. He's a risky play this week against the Giants.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/24/2012 4:24:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back DeMarco Murray is unlikely to play Week 8 against the Giants. Murray missed last week's game with a sore foot.
Insight: Expect Felix Jones and Phillip Tanner to split carries Sunday when the Cowboys take on the defending Super Bowl champs at Cowboys Stadium.
Felix Jones, RB10/24/2012 3:35:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones (bruised knee) missed Wednesday's practice.
Insight: Jones is still expected to play against the Giants this Sunday, though he'll likely share the workload with Phillip Tanner. Starter DeMarco Murray is not expected to play.
Sean Lee, LB10/23/2012 8:51:00 PM
Description: Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee may need season-ending surgery on his right big toe, according to ESPN.com.
Insight: Lee has accumulated 58 tackles and three passes deflected in six games this season. The linebacker needed crutches after spraining his toe in the third quarter of Sunday's game versus Carolina. If Lee needs surgery, he'll be replaced in the starting lineup by Dan Connor.
Phillip Tanner, RB10/23/2012 7:21:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back Phillip Tanner played more snaps than Felix Jones Sunday against the Panthers, according to ESPN.com. Tanner was on the field for 35 of 68 snaps while Jones only played 33.
Insight: Jones received 20 offensive touches to Tanner's 14 in Week 7 with DeMarco Murray out. However, Jones was banged up and will go into Week 8 with knee and neck injuries. We think Tanner is a better fantasy option against the Giants even though Jones is expected to start but neither player is a very attractive play.
Dez Bryant, WR10/23/2012 5:49:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant said his Week 7 groin injury is "nothing major, just something that I need to rest and I'll be ready."
Insight: Bryant said Tuesday that he's had groin soreness for more than a week. The receiver was only targeted three times Sunday, catching two passes for 14 yards, but said his groin didn't affect him that much.
Felix Jones, RB10/23/2012 4:00:00 PM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones was hindered by a bruised knee Sunday against Carolina, but is expecting to start, according to beat writer Clarence Hill.
Insight: Jones only rushed for 44 yards and shared the workload with Phillip Tanner because of the knee problem and the RBBC will likely continue until DeMarco Murray returns.
Phil Costa, C10/23/2012 12:34:00 PM
Description: Cowboys center Phil Costa injured his ankle last weekend and is listed as doubtful for Week 8 against the Giants.
Insight: The Giants put maximum pressure on offensive lines with their great pass rush and the Cowboys are already paper thin at the position. This isn't good news for Tony Romo owners as well as the receiving corps and the running backs.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/23/2012 12:29:00 PM
Description: Still no word of tests done yesterday on Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot).
Insight: When asked about Murray practicing on Wednesday, coach Jason Garrett told the media "We'll wait and see on that. We're certainly optimistic. He's proven to be someone who heals quickly."
Felix Jones, RB10/22/2012 10:32:00 AM
Description: Dallas running back Felix Jones was hindered by a bruised knee Sunday against Carolina.
Insight: That could be why Jones only rushed for 44 yards while ceding nearly half of his workload to third-stringer Phillip Tanner. We're not hopeful about Jones' fantasy prospects heading into next week's matchup with the Giants.
Dez Bryant, WR10/21/2012 6:11:00 PM
Description: Dez Bryant's presence was barely felt Sunday against Carolina. The Dallas wideout finished the game with just two catches for 14 yards.
Insight: Bryant's injured groin could be the reason for his lack of involvement on Sunday. He should have a better game next week against the Giants, assuming his groin injury doesn't get any worse.
Dez Bryant, WR10/21/2012 11:39:00 AM
Description: As expected, Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant will start Sunday against the Panthers. Bryant had been listed as questionable with a groin injury.
Insight: The questionable label was always a little misleading as Bryant was never in any real danger of missing Sunday's game. Bryant has gone off for 200 yards and two touchdowns over the last two weeks and it's unlikely the Panthers' weak secondary will be able to stop him from getting his points again in Week 7.
Dez Bryant, WR10/20/2012 4:07:00 PM
Description: ESPN is reporting that injured Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is expected to play Sunday against the Panthers.
Insight: Bryant scared fantasy owners by missing Friday's practice with a groin injury but it looks like he'll be good to go. Carolina's secondary hasn't been particularly hard to penetrate this season (249.6 passing ypg allowed) so we're expecting the third-year wideout to have another strong game on Sunday.
Dez Bryant, WR10/19/2012 3:49:00 PM
Description: Dallas wideout Dez Bryant sat out Friday's practice due to a groin injury. He'll be a game-time decision Sunday against Carolina.
Insight: Bryant is coming off his best performance of the season last week in Baltimore (13 catches, 95 yards, two TD). We're guessing Bryant will be in the lineup but if he's not, Kevin Ogletree will have a bigger role on Sunday.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/16/2012 7:22:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) has told teammates he will play versus the Giants in Week 8, according to Ed Werder of ESPN.
Insight: Murray's MRI revealed no broken bones but "some" ligament damage and he's already been ruled out for Week 7 by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Werder said the Cowboys are concerned the injury could result in a multi-game absence but Murray is insisting that he'll be able to play.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/16/2012 2:34:00 PM
Description: According to Jerry Jones, Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) will not play on Sunday at Carolina.
Insight: Murray's MRI revealed no broken bones but "some" ligament damage, according to the Cowboys' official website. He'll be re-evaluated on a week-to-week basis, but it's likely that he'll miss multiple games. Felix Jones' fantasy value just took a big jump.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/15/2012 5:24:00 PM
Description: According to Ed Werder of ESPN, Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (foot) is "doubtful" to play in Week 7 against the Panthers.
Insight: Murray's MRI revealed no broken bones but "some" ligament damage, according to the Cowboys' official website.
Felix Jones, RB10/15/2012 3:26:00 PM
Description: Dallas backup running back Felix Jones could become extremely valuable if DeMarco Murray's foot injury keeps him out for any length of time. Murray went for a Monday morning MRI, but reports out of Dallas think he has ligament damage.
Insight: Jones could be the starter for the next couple of weeks, or if the Murray injury turns out to be the more serious Lisfranc type, for the remainder of the season.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/15/2012 3:19:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray went for an MRI Monday morning with results still unknown, but reports out of Dallas think the star running back may have suffered ligament damage in his foot.
Insight: A Lisfranc injury could end his season, but ligament damage might just keep him out a few games. In the meantime, Felix Jones becomes a valuable fantasy property worth owning.
Dez Bryant, WR10/14/2012 4:30:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant finished the game with 13 receptions for 95 yards and two scores.
Insight: Great receiving totals for PPR leagues, but he still has just two 100-yard games in his 32-game career.
Felix Jones, RB10/14/2012 4:22:00 PM
Description: Dallas backup running back Felix Jones was sidelined with leg cramps. He did return, but didn't get much of a chance to continue running because Dallas was playing catch up.
Insight: With DeMarco Murray injured, Jones had put up solid numbers (18 rushes for 92 yards and a TD), but could stay on the field. Phillip Tanner rushed nine times for 31 yards.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/14/2012 3:12:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray has returned to action after suffering a foot injury late in the first half.
Insight: Murray has had a solid game so far, going off for 93 yards rushing on 14 carries. He also has one catch for four yards.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/14/2012 2:56:00 PM
Description: Dallas halfback DeMarco Murray sprained his foot during the first half of Sunday's game versus the Ravens. His return is questionable.
Insight: Down by two scores, the Cowboys will need to throw the ball to stay in this game. Even if Murray does return, we're not expecting him to have much of an impact during the second half.
Miles Austin, WR10/12/2012 1:59:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wideout Miles Austin is dealing with a hamstring injury, but is listed as probable for Sunday's game against Baltimore.
Insight: Austin was never in danger of missing the game, but it is always worrisome when a speed receiver has a leg injury.
Anthony Spencer, LB10/11/2012 4:51:00 PM
Description: Cowboys LB Anthony Spencer (shoulder) is expected to play Sunday against the Ravens, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Spencer didn't play against the Bears on Oct. 1 due to a strained pectoral muscle but he had the team's bye week to recover. Spencer returned to practice Thursday in a limited session. The linebacker has 21 total tackles and two sacks in three games this season.
Jason Witten, TE10/1/2012 11:42:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten turned in his best performance of the season in Monday's loss to Chicago, catching 13 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. He only had eight catches in the first three games combined.
Insight: Witten was plagued by drops and penalties in the first three weeks but he showed up big in Week 4. Fantasy owners will like the four catches, 48 yards and a touchdown he had on the Cowboys' final drive when the game was already out of hand.
DeMarco Murray, RB10/1/2012 11:41:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray only had 24 yards on 11 carries but he did catch seven balls for 57 yards Monday against the Bears.
Insight: After running for 131 yards in Week 1, Murray has just 106 yards on 41 carries in the last three games. Dallas' offensive line simply isn't doing a good enough job opening holes for the running back.
Tony Romo, QB10/1/2012 11:35:00 PM
Description: Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had a disastrous game on Monday night against the Bears, throwing five interceptions (two for TDs). Romo did throw for 307 yards and a touchdown but the bad far outweighed the good.
Insight: Romo threw for 307 yards and three scores in Week 1. Since then, the QB has a TD/INT ratio of 2-to-7. He already has eight picks on the season after throwing 10 all of last season.
Miles Austin, WR9/23/2012 3:57:00 PM
Description: Injured wideout Miles Austin has returned to action for the Cowboys after leaving earlier with a rib injury.
Insight: Dez Bryant could see more targets down the stretch if Romo is unsure about throwing Austin's way.
Miles Austin, WR9/23/2012 3:45:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin left Sunday's game to have X-rays on his ribs.
Insight: Austin had four catches for 90 yards before exiting. The receiver caught a touchdown in each of the first two weeks this season and has been Tony Romo's favorite target so far.
Kevin Ogletree, WR9/18/2012 5:16:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Kevin Ogletree only had one target in Week 2 after putting up a career game in Week 1.
Insight: Ogletree caught the one pass thrown his way for a 26-yard completion and also rushed the ball once for five yards, but he's officially not a fantasy option unless Miles Austin gets hurt again.
DeMarco Murray, RB9/16/2012 7:15:00 PM
Description: The Cowboys fell behind early Sunday against the Seahawks and were only able to give running back DeMarco Murray 12 carries.
Insight: Murray rushed for 44 yards and also had 31 yards receiving on four catches. More often than not Dallas will be competitive, so Murray should have plenty of 20-carry games.
Tony Romo, QB9/14/2012 9:45:00 PM
Description: The Cowboys and quarterback Tony Romo have begun talks on a new contract extension.
Insight: Romo was excellent in a Week 1 win over New York (307 yards, three TD). This week he'll face the Seahawks, the team he famously fumbled against in the 2006 playoffs.
Jason Witten, TE9/12/2012 8:40:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (lacerated spleen) was a full go in Wednesday's practice, according to ESPN Dallas.
Insight: Witten caught just two passes in Week 1 as a surprise active, but he said he's feeling better and doesn't expect the injury to linger like an ankle or a hamstring injury. You can start him comfortably in Week 2; he'll undoubtedly perform better now that he's a full part of the team's game plan.
DeMarco Murray, RB9/12/2012 8:39:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is listed on the injury report with a wrist injury, but it isn't considered serious, according to SB Nation.
Insight: Murray practiced fully Wednesday so he should be fine to start Sunday, but the Seahawks defense will likely give him more trouble than the Giants did last week.
Felix Jones, RB9/10/2012 1:38:00 PM
Description: Dallas backup running back Felix Jones was back practicing on Monday after dealing with bruised ribs coming out of the Wednesday night's game against the Giants.
Insight: Jones was injured in the second quarter, but failed to get an opportunity either rushing or receiving before then. He returned three kickoffs for a 20.3 average
Jason Witten, TE9/5/2012 11:55:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (lacerated spleen) started but he only caught two passes for 10 yards.
Insight: Witten was on the field for much of the game but he didn't play a factor in the passing game. It was worth the risk playing him since he is usually Tony Romo's favorite target.
DeMarco Murray, RB9/5/2012 11:42:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray started slow but finished strong Wednesday against the Giants. Murray had 20 rushing yards in the first half but he finished with 131 yards on 20 carries.
Insight: Murray had a big 48-yard gain in the third quarter. The running back didn't score but fantasy owners will take this line every time.
Tony Romo, QBHot9/5/2012 11:40:00 PM
Description: Cowboys QB Tony Romo proved he's still one of fantasy's best second-tier QBs with 307 yards and three touchdowns Wednesday in the season opener against the Giants.
Insight: Romo spread the ball around and the Cowboys offense produced three excellent fantasy receiver lines from Kevin Ogletree, Dez Bryant and Miles Austin. Romo should continue to put up big numbers, especially once Jason Witten is 100 percent healthy.
Dez Bryant, WR9/5/2012 11:39:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant had a strong start to the season Wednesday with four catches for 85 yards.
Insight: Bryant didn't get into the end zone but he looked strong on his four catches. The third-year player appears to be primed for a big season.
Miles Austin, WR9/5/2012 11:36:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin had a huge fourth quarter Wednesday against the Giants after catching just one pass in the first three.
Insight: Austin snagged three passes and a touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished with four receptions for 73 yards and a score. He looked completely healthy when he jumped over two Giants defensive backs on his touchdown catch, and that's the most important thing with Austin.
Kevin Ogletree, WR9/5/2012 11:34:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Kevin Ogletree had a career game in Wednesday's season opener, catching eight passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
Insight: Ogletree didn't officially earn the No. 3 receiver job until the end of the preseason. This is an offense that saw third receiver Laurent Robinson catch 11 TD passes last season, so Ogletree is someone to target in deeper leagues, especially given Miles Austin's injury history. He won't do this every week but if Austin goes down Ogletree will be a solid fantasy starting option.
Jason Witten, TE9/5/2012 8:03:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (lacerated spleen) is listed as active for Wednesday's game against the Giants.
Insight: Witten has been out since the first preseason game with a lacerated spleen but he was cleared by doctors to play Wednesday. Witten was believed to be doubtful for the game so this active comes as quite a shock to the fantasy community, but Witten has been lobbying to start, even going as far as saying he would sign a waiver releasing the Cowboys and the NFL from liability if he were to re-injure himself. Get him in the lineup.
Jason Witten, TE9/5/2012 10:10:00 AM
Description: According to a Profootballreport.com source, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten was cleared for Week 2, but will miss Wednesday's night's opener against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
Insight: Witten saw the doctor on Tuesday morning, though we haven't heard of the results. You should be making an alternate plan as Witten will be inactive the game.
Jason Witten, TE9/4/2012 1:30:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is listed as doubtful for Wednesday's NFL season opener against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, according the the team's website.
Insight: Witten saw the doctor on Tuesday morning, though we haven't heard of the results. He's planning on making the trip to New York, but you should be making an alternate plan in case Witten is inactive the game.
Miles Austin, WR9/3/2012 12:49:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin is probable for Wednesday's game against the New York Giants after dealing with a hamstring injury in preseason.
Insight: We are sure Austin will play in the opener, we're not as sure that he can get through a 16-game schedule without missing time. He played just 10 games last season because of hamstring injuries to both legs and has already missed time in training camp for the same problem. He's a high-risk, high-reward player.
Dez Bryant, WR9/3/2012 12:47:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant returned to practice Saturday following a two-week absence, according to NFL.com. Bryant has been shut down since Aug. 20 after an MRI showed he had patellar tendinitis in his knee.
Insight: Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Bryant also could still be in the mix to return punts which would make him more valuable in fantasy leagues which include return yardage.
DeMarco Murray, RB9/3/2012 12:45:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is listed as probable for Wednesday's season opener against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
Insight: It doesn't appear to be anything serious and Murray seems completely recovered from last year's ankle injury. We're expecting big things from Murray who has become an every down back. He simply has to stay healthy to make fantasy owners happy.
Jason Witten, TE9/2/2012 2:36:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (lacerated spleen) is "extremely unlikely" to play in Wednesday's season opener, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.
Insight: Witten resumed practicing on a limited basis Saturday but the team's first game is three days away. He's likely to be questionable for Week 2. John Phillips will start in Witten's place.
Dez Bryant, WR9/1/2012 10:42:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant returned to practice Saturday following a two-week absence, according to NFL.com. Bryant has been shut down since Aug. 20 after an MRI showed he had patellar tendinitis in his knee.
Insight: It's looking more and more like Bryant will be probable for the season opener Sept. 5 against the Giants. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Bryant also could still be in the mix to return punts.
Jason Witten, TE9/1/2012 8:59:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (lacerated spleen) returned to practice Saturday, according to ESPN.com.
Insight: Witten hasn't practiced since suffering a lacerated spleen on Aug. 13. The Cowboys tight end had a scan of his spleen Aug. 28 which revealed the injury was healing, but he was not cleared for contact. He's still questionable for Week 1.
Jason Witten, TE8/31/2012 5:29:00 PM
Description: Cowboys tight end Jason Witten still hasn't been cleared for contact with five days remaining until the team's season opener against the Giants. Witten, listed as questionable for Week 1's matchup with the Super Bowl champs, has been out most of training camp with a lacerated spleen.
Insight: Despite Witten's "questionable" label, we're guessing Dallas will play it safe and wait another week before allowing their star tight end to return to action.
Jason Witten, TE8/30/2012 10:53:00 AM
Description: Dallas tight end Jason Witten is expected to be a game-time decision for next Wednesday's season opener against the Giants. Witten has missed most of training camp with an injured spleen.
Insight: Witten is always a threat for 1,000 yards receiving when he's healthy and he's one of Tony Romo's most trusted targets. If he isn't in the lineup on Wednesday, you can expect the seven-time Pro Bowler to be back for Week 2's game versus the Seahawks.
Miles Austin, WR8/28/2012 2:48:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin was asked on Tuesday if there was any way he would miss the season opener with the Super Bowl champion Giants and he said "no."
Insight: We are sure Austin will play in the opener as well, we're not as sure that he can get through a 16-game schedule without missing time. He played just 10 games last season because of hamstring injuries to both legs and has already missed time in training camp for the same problem. He's a high-risk, high-reward player.
Dez Bryant, WR8/27/2012 9:22:00 PM
Description: The Cowboys have established new rules to keep wide receiver Dez Bryant's behavior in check.
Insight: Bryant is no longer allowed to consume alcohol during the season and can't be out past midnight. He is also required to go to counseling twice a week and Bryant must be accompanied by a security guard at all times. Bryant agreed to all of these restrictions so it looks like the 23-year-old is serious about cleaning up his act.
Tony Romo, QBHot8/26/2012 10:20:00 AM
Description: In only one quarter of action Saturday night against the Rams, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo blew up for 198 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Insight: That's a quarterback rating of 151.4. Clearly Romo is already in midseason form. Expect his success Saturday to carry over into the regular season.
Jason Witten, TE8/22/2012 5:07:00 PM
Description: The Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will not require season-ending surgery on his lacerated spleen but that doesn't mean he'll be cleared for Week 1.
Insight: According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Witten is questionable for Week 1 against the Giants and is more likely to play in Week 2 against Seattle.
Dez Bryant, WR8/21/2012 5:52:00 PM
Description: Dallas receiver Dez Bryant (knee) expects to be on the field in the team's first game against New York, according to Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill.
Insight: "You know I'm going to play in New York," Bryant said. "That's without a doubt." Bryant was diagnosed with patellar tendinitis Monday but it shouldn't be a major problem this season.
Tony Romo, QB8/21/2012 2:08:00 PM
Description: Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo may not have many of his weapons available when the season begins with Miles Austin (hamstring), Dez Bryant, (knee) and Jason Witten (spleen) all currently missing time.
Insight: Taking Romo early in the draft will be a high-risk proposition, until we know the situation with his receivers. The Cowboys aren't deep behind Austin and Bryant with unknowns Kevin Ogletree, Andre Holmes, Danny Coale and Cole Beasley backing up the stars.
Dez Bryant, WR8/20/2012 6:08:00 PM
Description: Dallas receiver Dez Bryant has been diagnosed with patellar tendinitis according to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas.
Insight: By all accounts, Bryant was having an excellent training camp and was set to build on his 63-catch, 928-yard, nine touchdowns season of a year ago. Archer said it's too early to know if he'll play again this preseason.
Dez Bryant, WR8/20/2012 3:40:00 PM
Description: Dallas receiver Dez Bryant will undergo an MRI after injuring his knee in practice on Monday, according to Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.
Insight: By all accounts, Bryant was having an excellent training camp and was set to build on his 63-catch, 928-yard, nine touchdowns season of a year ago. We hope this isn't serious and he'll be ready for opening night.
Miles Austin, WR8/19/2012 3:05:00 PM
Description: According to the Cowboys' official website, team owner Jerry Jones does not expect receiver Miles Austin to return to practice this week.
Insight: If Austin doesn't practice he won't return for the third exhibition game and may end up missing the entire preseason. Still, at Austin's current price tag (fantasyfootballcalculator.com ADP: 6.04), he may be worth the risk.
Jason Witten, TE8/16/2012 7:58:00 PM
Description: The Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has a "slightly lacerated" spleen and will miss the rest of the preseason.
Insight: According to NFL Network reporter Albert Breer, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the team will re-evaluate Witten after an 8-10 day period to determine if he needs surgery. Witten's status for Week 1 is very much in jeopardy.
DeMarco Murray, RB8/16/2012 4:29:00 PM
Description: According to Matt Mosley of FoxSportsSouthwest.com, Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is "fully healed" from his broken ankle and has been "the most impressive offensive player to watch in training camp."
Insight: Running backs coach Skip Peete thinks Murray will be utilized more in the passing game this season, as he has "improved his concentration" when catching the ball. The Cowboys sophomore should be long gone by the time the second round rolls around in most fantasy drafts.
Miles Austin, WR8/16/2012 12:29:00 PM
Description: Despite not being available for practice this week because of a strained hamstring, the Cowboys are optimistic that Miles Austin will be ready to go August 25th for the team's third preseason game against St. Louis.
Insight: Austin has always been an effective receiving weapon for Tony Romo when he's been healthy, but unfortunately his hamstring has been giving him fits for over a year now. He'll probably be cleared to play by Week 1 but it wouldn't be surprising if Austin suffers a setback during the season given his history.
Jason Witten, TE8/15/2012 1:55:00 PM
Description: The Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten injured his spleen in the most recent preseason game against Oakland and according to a Mike Florio report at ProFootballTalk.com will miss the remainder of the preseason.
Insight: Witten hasn't been ruled out for Week 1, yet, but there are no guarantees that he'll be ready to go when the whistle blows. Witten hasn't missed a game since 2003 and has been a valuable fantasy tight end for the past eight seasons averaging 82 receptions, 945 yards and five touchdowns per season during that span.
DeMarco Murray, RB8/13/2012 11:04:00 PM
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray carried the ball twice for zero yards in the team's first preseason game Monday.
Insight: Murray had an excellent rookie season, rushing for 897 yards on 164 carries, but he fractured his right ankle in Week 14. The running back is reportedly fully healthy and dominating in training camp, according to Sports Illustrated's Don Banks.
Miles Austin, WR8/13/2012 8:44:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin is not playing in the team's preseason opener Monday due to a strained hamstring.
Insight: Dallas said it is holding out Austin as a precaution. However, the receiver missed six games last year with similar hamstring troubles, so drafting him comes with a huge risk.
Tony Romo, QB8/13/2012 11:59:00 AM
Description: Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo is only going to see one series in the team's preseason opener before sitting for the night, according to Calvin Watkins.
Insight: Romo isn't going to have his top wide receivers, Miles Austin (hamstring) or Dez Bryant (hamstring), so there isn't much to be learned about the Cowboys tendencies.
Dez Bryant, WR8/12/2012 4:28:00 PM
Description: Dallas receiver Dez Bryant will be a game-time decision for Monday night's preseason opener against Oakland. Bryant strained his hamstring at practice on Saturday.
Insight: Look for the Cowboys to take the cautious approach and sit their star receiver in Monday night's meaningless exhibition.
Kevin Ogletree, WR8/8/2012 11:09:00 AM
Description: According to Cowboys receivers coach Jimmy Robinson, Kevin Ogletree is the leading candidate for the No. 3 receiver role in Dallas.
Insight: Given Miles Austin's injury-prone status, picking Ogletree could be a valuable late-round selection. Ogletree has just 25 career receptions in three seasons for the Cowboys, but could jump up on fantasy radar screens in 2011 as Laurent Robinson did last season if an injury occurs.
DeMarco Murray, RB8/7/2012 2:30:00 PM
Description: Dallas running backs coach Skip Peete told Clarence E. Hill Jr of the Star-Telegram that he believes Demarco Murray could run for 1,200 yards or more.
Insight: While we aren't willing to go that far, it goes to the mindset of the Cowboys staff that Murray is the team's primary back and Felix Jones the change of pace back.
Miles Austin, WR8/5/2012 4:00:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin will miss at least a week with a hamstring injury, according to Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill. The team says it isn't worried about the ailment, but Austin missed six games last season with two separate hamstring injuries.
Insight: With Dez Bryant going into his third season in the NFL, Austin needs to have an injury free season to avoid being surpassed on the Cowboys' depth chart. This is not a good start for him.
Miles Austin, WR8/4/2012 10:06:00 PM
Description: Cowboys receiver Miles Austin injured his hamstring during Saturday's practice, according to the team's official website. Dallas VP Stephen Jones said the team is not concerned about the ailment.
Insight: Austin missed six games last season with two separate hamstring injuries, so any injury to that area, regardless of how minor, must be monitored. The receiver's injury history should be on every fantasy owner's mind when drafting.
Dez Bryant, WR8/2/2012 1:38:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is on thin ice based on statements by owner Jerry Jones to NFL.com. "I'm demanding that he work through it (his problems). He must do it or we can't count on him. We will move on."
Insight: It's hard to believe the Cowboys would give up on this talented a wide receiver, but the Jones statement is now out there. We think Bryant will have a very good season (Sports Network projection 76-1,158-8), but he's a high-risk pick because of the off-the-field issues. Think Terrell Owens.
Dez Bryant, WR7/23/2012 9:11:00 PM
Description: The mother of Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant will not press charges following the alleged domestic violence incident between the two, according to the Associated Press.
Insight: Bryant is unlikely to receive a suspension if charges are not filed against him. Hopefully he can put this behind him, as he should have a breakout year if he can remain free of distractions and injuries.
Dez Bryant, WR7/16/2012 8:12:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence Monday, according to WFAA out of Dallas-Fort Worth.
Insight: Bryant can't seem to stay away from controversy, but we still think he'll break out in what will be his third NFL season in 2012.
Stephen McGee, QB6/18/2012 12:42:00 PM
Description: Cowboys QB Stephen McGee may have to fight to keep the third spot on the depth chart behind starter Tony Romo and No. 2 Kyle Orton.
Insight: McGee or his possible replacement Rudy Carpenter will have little fantasy value barring catastrophic injuries at the position.
Dez Bryant, WR6/18/2012 12:30:00 PM
Description: Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant appears to have made strides to improve his conditioning.
Insight: Bryant frequently disappeard in the second halves of games and conditioning more than anything else seemed to be the problem. A Bryant who can play all four quarters at a high level should easily be able to better his 2011 statistics (63 rec., 928 yards, 9 TDs).
