Ducks stay hot with edging of Stars
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf scored in the shootout to lift the Anaheim Ducks over the Dallas Stars, 2-1, on Thursday.
Andrew Cogliano scored in regulation for the Ducks, who had lost four straight against Dallas. Jonas Hiller made 33 saves.
Anaheim, which picked up its fifth consecutive victory, played without the services of forward Corey Perry, who served the first of a four-game ban for an illegal hit against Minnesota's Jason Zucker in Tuesday's 2-1 road victory over the Wild.
Ray Whitney lit the lamp for the Stars, who have lost three in a row. Kari Lehtonen made 29 saves.
Dallas' Jaromir Jagr almost broke a 1-1 tie with 3 1/2 minutes left in regulation. His shot hit off the crossbar and right post before bouncing out, resulting in a no-goal call from the officials. The play was reviewed less than a minute later and the call made on the ice was upheld.
"It was a quick a whistle," Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan said. "(It) should've been a goal, but those things happen in a game and you've got a lot of time to put another one in."
Hiller made 12 saves in a scoreless third period, while Lehtonen stopped three shots.
Overtime went by without a goal and a shootout was needed. Ryan opened the first round with a backhander that snuck past Lehtonen. Getzlaf put the game away with a backhander of his own in the third round. Hiller stopped Whitney and Loui Eriksson in the shootout.
"We got some bounces tonight that could have been goals and our penalty kills did a great job helping us and our goaltender again. Those are games that feel really good to win as a team," Getzlaf said.
Dallas drew first blood at the 12:35 mark of the first period. A broken play ended with Whitney beating Hiller on a backhander.
Cogliano put home his own rebound at the 7:28 mark of the middle stanza to make it 1-1.
Stars captain Brenden Morrow returned to the lineup after missing two games with a strained groin, while Jamie Benn sat out his second straight contest with a wrist ailment ... Anaheim had lost four straight at Dallas ... The Stars went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Ducks went 0-for-3 on the man advantage ... The Ducks have earned points in nine consecutive games (7-0-2).
