Final Score: Washington 23, Seattle 17
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Rex Grossman tossed the go-ahead 50-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Armstrong in the fourth quarter, leading the Washington Redskins to a hard-fought 23-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Grossman finished with 314 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 26- of-35 passing, while Roy Helu had a nice day on the ground, rushing for 108 yards and a score for the Redskins (4-7), who snapped a six-game losing streak.
"It's always difficult to accomplish what we did today, this is a hostile environment," Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said. "I was proud of our whole football team."
Jabar Gaffney had five catches for 72 yards and Fred Davis hauled in four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. Armstrong's touchdown catch was his only grab of the day.
Tarvaris Jackson threw for 144 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 14-of-30 passing, while Marshawn Lynch ran for 111 yards on 24 carries for the Seahawks (4-7), who had their two-game winning streak halted.
Lynch also caught a touchdown pass, while Doug Baldwin had five grabs for 60 yards and Golden Tate caught a touchdown pass.
Trailing by three, 17-14, the Redskins took the lead for good with Grossman's 50-yard touchdown bomb down the left sideline for Armstrong on 3rd-and-19 to put Washington ahead. The extra point try by Graham Gano was blocked by Red Bryant, keeping it a three-point game.
Seattle had a shot to tie or win the game on its next drive, but were unable to move the ball. Gano was good from 25 yards out to account for the final score.
"We have to just continue to improve on awareness of the situations that we're in and the choices that we make," Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said. "We made too many mistakes down the home stretch to finish the game and we couldn't get it done."
The Redskins opened the scoring on the first possession of the game when Grossman led a 14-play, 80-yard drive down to the Seattle two before he connected with Davis on a two-yard touchdown strike to give his team a 7-0 advantage.
Seattle responded early in the second quarter with a big defensive play.
Following a Seahawks punt, Washington began its first drive of the second quarter on its own 22. On the second play of the drive, Grossman threw to the right for Gaffney, but the pass was picked off by Brandon Browner and returned 16 yards to the Washington 20.
On the ensuing Seahawks drive, they needed only one play -- a 20-yard completion from Jackson to Lynch -- to knot the game at seven with 11:01 to play before the break.
The Redskins began their next drive from their own 34 and moved down to the Seattle four. Grossman connected with Gaffney score, but the play was nullified when Gaffney was flagged for an illegal touch.
Seattle stood tall and kept the Redskins out of the end zone the rest of the drive and forced a 23-yard field goal attempt by Gano, which would also have given the Redskins the lead, but the kick was blocked.
The Seahawks broke the deadlock with 5:58 to go in the third quarter, when Jackson led a four-play, 47-yard drive capped by a Steven Hauschka 36-yard field goal to make it 10-7.
Seattle gave itself some much-needed breathing room on its next drive as Jackson connected with Tate on a 15-yard touchdown strike to cap a 12-play, 88-yard march early in the final quarter.
Washington, though, responded with a touchdown on its next drive as Helu bounced off left tackle for a 28-yard touchdown sprint on 3rd-and-3 to make it a three-point game.
Seattle had won 16 consecutive games when leading after three quarters of play...It was Bryant's fourth blocked kick of the season...The Redskins are 11-4 all-time against the Seahawks in regular-season play and have bested Seattle six straight times in a non-playoff setting...Seattle was looking to win three straight for the first time since 2007.
