National League Game Summary - Arizona at San Diego
(Wednesday, September 25th)
Final Score: San Diego 12, Arizona 2
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Denorfia collected three hits, two RBI and three runs scored, as the San Diego Padres pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks, 12-2, in the third tilt of a four-game set at Petco Park.
Chase Headley had three hits and three RBI, Jedd Gyorko ripped a two-run homer, and Chris Robinson registered his first major league hit with a three- run shot in the eighth for the Padres, who have won two of their last three.
Ian Kennedy (7-10), making his final start of the season against the team he began the season with, struck out seven and held his former squad to two runs on six hits and a walk over seven strong innings.
"That's the best velocity we have seen out of him all year," Padres manager Bud Black said. "His arm was quick, he was painting it early and he really pitched well."
Randall Delgado (5-7), who recorded Arizona's lone RBI, was tagged for six runs on seven hits over five frames to absorb the loss.
San Diego jumped on Delgado in the first when Denorfia stroked a one-out double, moved to third on a flyout and scored on Headley's double to right.
Delgado's run-scoring single in the third tied the score before Kennedy balked in a run in the fourth when he faked a pickoff throw to third with runners on the corners, allowing Paul Goldschmidt to trot home for a 2-1 lead.
Tommy Medica picked up his pitcher with a game-tying two-out blast in the home half before the Padres pulled in front with a four-run fifth.
With two outs and runners on second and third, Denorfia punched a single through the right side of the infield to score both runners for a 4-2 lead before Gyorko crushed a 1-2 changeup into the upper deck in left field to double San Diego's advantage.
"It was just a hanging changeup right there down the heart of the plate," D'backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "He's just going to have to make better pitches."
Rene Rivera ripped a two-out RBI double in the sixth to increase the lead before Headley added a run-scoring single in the seventh to make it 8-2.
Robinson entered as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and made his first big league hit a memorable one, launching a three-run homer into the left-field seats for an 11-2 cushion.
Headley added an RBI double later in the frame to account for the final margin.
Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 15 games ... Kennedy went 3-8 over 21 starts with Arizona before being dealt to the Padres on July 31 ... Arizona went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.
