Rangers announce Andrus extension

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers made it official Thursday and announced that the club has signed shortstop Elvis Andrus to an eight-year contract extension.

The new deal, reportedly worth $120 million, takes effect following the conclusion of the 2014 season and includes a vesting option for 2023. Reports earlier this week had indicated the deal contains an opt-out clause after the 2018 campaign.

Andrus, 24, went 4-for-13 in the Rangers' season-opening three-game series in Houston this week.

A two-time All-Star, Andrus is a career .275 hitter in 604 big league games. He has played at least 145 games every year since his rookie campaign of 2009 and last year set career bests with a .286 average, 31 doubles and 62 runs batted in.
