Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
One game, zero goals, zero assists, two shots on goal. That is apparently the total contribution you will get from Montreal Canadiens star defenseman Andrei Markov until sometime in January.
Last year, Markov finished second in points among defensemen, nine behind Washington's Mike Green (73-64). He was No.1 in assists and power play assists among blueliners. Although he didn't contribute much in PIM and his plus/minus rating was a -2, he was still ranked among the top scoring defensemen on Draft Day. He was ranked 95th overall and in my draft was selected in the middle of the seventh round, just after Scott Niedermayer.
Markov was cut on the ankle by goalie Carey Price's skate in the third period of the season opener, a 4-3 overtime win against Toronto. Reports coming out this morning indicate a torn tendon and estimates for his return are in the 3- to-4 month range. Yannick Weber is expected to be recalled from the AHL to replace Markov on the roster.
