Final Defenseman Rankings

Mike Green will enter 2009 as the No.1 fantasy
defenseman and likely a top-10 overall choice.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - When you have a defenseman who can put up numbers equal to a top-five winger, you have the makings of a fantasy star. Compare Washington defenseman Mike Green's statistics to No.5 right winger Shane Doan. They are almost identical (Doan - 31G, 42A, +5, 72 PIM, 25 PPP, 230 SOG).

Green was a first-round draft choice of the Capitals in 2004 (29th overall) and just finished his second full season. He improved his stats in all six fantasy categories from 2007 to 2008 and will enter 2009 as the No.1 fantasy defenseman and likely a top-10 overall choice.

There really wasn't much competition for the 2008 TSN Fantasy Defenseman Award. In preseason rankings, Green was listed at No.3 behind Detroit Red Wings' Nicklas Lidstrom and Dion Phaneuf of Calgary but neither lived up to expectations.

Coming off a down season in Los Angeles, Rob Blake was almost invisible on Draft Day, but put up enough numbers to win this season's Best Fantasy Bargain Award for defensemen. He increased his statistics in every category including a nice 34-goal improvement in plus/minus rating (-19 to +15). From a 15th-round selection to No.5 at the position was easily enough to win the prize.

Brian Campbell, ranked the No.6 defenseman in preseason and having signed a large contract in the off-season, came to Chicago as their number one defenseman and power play quarterback. Campbell, was coming off a career-high 62 points last season, but let down owners when his statistics dropped off in almost every category. He finished the year ranked 32nd and unfortunately that's enough to win the TSN Most Disappointing Award.
