Miami Marlins Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/25/2015 7:45:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton was 3-for-3 with a double and home run in the, 8-0, victory over the Nationals on Saturday.
Insight: Stanton came into the game with three career home runs off Stephen Strasburg, so hopefully owners listened to our advice to keep Stanton in the lineup. Stanton didn't hit the homer until the eighth, so it wasn't against Strasburg, but owners will take a single and double off the Nationals right-hander. Stanton is hitting .262 with five home runs and 16 RBI this season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/25/2015 11:03:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is a career .357 hitter (10-for-28) with three home runs versus Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg.
Insight: No player has more homers versus Strasburg (Freddie Freeman also has three). Stanton has four homers in his last eight games, though he's batting just .226 on the season. Michael Morse doesn't appear to be the protection Stanton needs behind him in the lineup.
Dee Gordon, 2B4/24/2015 10:00:00 PM
Description: Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon had a nice game Friday versus Washington.
Insight: He went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Gordon is hitting .370 with 10 RBIs and eight stolen bases on the year.
Mat Latos, SP4/24/2015 9:02:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Mat Latos allowed two runs Friday against the Nationals.
Insight: He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed those two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four. Latos still has an ugly 7.31 ERA this season.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C4/24/2015 3:48:00 PM
Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia will likely miss the weekend series with Washington while on paternity leave.
Insight: J.T. Realmuto and Jhonatan Solano will cover the catching spot for the weekend.
Christian Yelich, LF4/24/2015 3:45:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (strained lower back) hasn't played since Sunday and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: A lot is expected to Yelich after last season and to date he's batting just .200 with a .488 OPS. Ichiro Suzuki should see most of his at-bats.
Martin Prado, 3BHot4/23/2015 4:07:00 PM
Description: With three more hits on Thursday, Marlins 3B/OF Martin Prado has raised his average to .300.
Insight: That's five multi-hit games in the last seven contests. You could do a lot worse at the hot corner.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot4/23/2015 4:03:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton didn't hit a tape-measure home run on Thursday, just a line drive bullet that left the field in a heartbeat.
Insight: Stanton's home run was the fourth of the season and fourth in the last seven games. Perhaps pitching around him while he's this hot would be a good idea.
Christian Yelich, LF4/23/2015 9:50:00 AM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (strained lower back) hasn'r played since Sunday and is questionable for Thursday's game against Philadelphia.
Insight: It's serious enough that the team is discussing a trip to the disabled list. A lot is expected to Yelich after last season and to date he's batting just .200 with a .488 OPS. This is the reason for his ugly start. Ichiro Suzuki will take his spot in left field.
Martin Prado, 3B4/22/2015 9:55:00 PM
Description: Marlins 3B/OF Martin Prado went 2-for-5 Wednesday versus Philadelphia.
Insight: He had a double and one RBI and is now hitting .273 on the season overall.
Jarred Cosart, SP4/22/2015 9:06:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart had a strong outing Wednesday against the Phillies.
Insight: He went six innings and allowed one run on four hits and struck out four. Cosart left the game in line for the victory and now has a 3.63 ERA on the season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/22/2015 10:48:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is a career .279 hitter versus Phillies ace Cole Hamels.
Insight: Stanton is 12-for-43 against Hamels with six extra base hits and six RBI. He also has 17 strikeouts versus Hamels, so plan the lineup accordingly.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/21/2015 9:42:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 during Tuesday's loss to Philadelphia.
Insight: One of those hits was a homer run. It was Stanton's third of the season, and he now has 12 RBIs overall.
Christian Yelich, LF4/21/2015 6:43:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (back) will not play on Tuesday.
Insight: He was originally in the lineup, but had to be scratched due to his back tightening up. Ichiro Suzuki will take his spot in left field.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/19/2015 4:05:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton had a RBI during Sunday's loss against the Mets.
Insight: He went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Stanton is batting .239 with 11 RBIs early on this season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/17/2015 11:04:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton accounted for the Marlins only run on Friday, hitting a solo home run versus the Mets.
Insight: Stanton's bomb gave Miami a, 1-0, lead, but the Mets scored the final four runs of the game. The blast was Stanton's second in as many games and second of the season. He is hitting .243 with 10 RBI.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/16/2015 10:37:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton hit just fine without his protective mask on his helmet on Thursday.
Insight: The game versus the Mets on Thursday was the first time since getting hit in the jaw with a pitch last August that Stanton was hitting without the protective face mask on his helmet. He promptly hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat and went 2-for-3 in the game. The homer was Stanton's first of the season.
Christian Yelich, LF4/16/2015 4:02:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (back) did not play on Tuesday or Wednesday, but is in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: Ichiro Suzuki would have gotten the start in Yelich's place, but is batting just .188 in the early going and isn't a viable fantasy option. Yelich, at this point in his career, is a better option.
Christian Yelich, LF4/16/2015 10:59:00 AM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (back) did not play on Tuesday or Wednesday and there is a chance he may not play until the weekend.
Insight: Ichiro Suzuki would get the start in Yelich's place, but is batting just .188 in the early going and isn't a viable fantasy option.
Michael Morse, LF4/15/2015 2:40:00 PM
Description: Marlins first baseman Michael Morse hit his first homer of the season Wednesday versus Atlanta.
Insight: Morse also scored two runs and walked once. He has six RBIs through the early going.
Dan Haren, SP4/15/2015 2:38:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Dan Haren went seven strong innings during Wednesday's victory against the Braves.
Insight: He allowed two runs on just three hits and two walks, while striking out five. Haren is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts with Miami.
Martin Prado, 3B4/15/2015 11:43:00 AM
Description: Marlins 3B/OF Martin Prado has a career .385 BA against Atlanta starter Eric Stults.
Insight: Prado could be in line for a nice afternoon. He has one home run and six RBIs lifetime against Stults.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/14/2015 10:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton picked up four RBIs during Tuesday's win against the Braves.
Insight: Stanton is still searching for his first homer, but a 3-for-3 night will definitely help his average. Stanton has a .231 BA with seven RBIs so far this season.
Christian Yelich, LF4/14/2015 6:36:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (back) will not play on Tuesday night.
Insight: Yelich was originally in the lineup, but the team decided to give him a night to rest. Ichiro Suzuki will get the start in Yelich's place.
Dee Gordon, 2B4/14/2015 11:35:00 AM
Description: Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon is a career .400 hitter (6-for-15) against Braves starter Trevor Cahill.
Insight: That's not the real reason we like Gordon on Tuesday. It's that he's 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts off of Cahill that makes him an exciting play.
Henderson Alvarez, SP4/13/2015 3:52:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a right shoulder injury.
Insight: The Marlins are now missing their top-two starters in Jose Fernandez and Alvarez. Alvarez went 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA last season. There is no announced timetable for his return.
Marcell Ozuna, CF4/13/2015 10:42:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna missed Sunday's game after arriving late to the ballpark, but should be available for Monday against Atlanta.
Insight: The penalty shouldn't be more than one game. Ozuna became a fantasy asset last season after belting 23 homers with 85 RBI and a .772 OPS. We're still waiting for his first home run or RBI this season.
Dee Gordon, 2B4/12/2015 5:05:00 PM
Description: Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon went 3-for-5 with double, triple, RBI and run scored on Sunday.
Insight: It's too bad Gordon wasn't also able to steal a bag, but fantasy owners will take this big day. He is now hitting .346/.370/.500 after the first week of the season.
Christian Yelich, LF4/10/2015 10:49:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich played the role of hero Friday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Miami had an 8-1 lead, then a 9-8 lead, but it took 10 innings to pull it out. Yelich went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a walk. He is hitting .313 through four games this season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/10/2015 10:48:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-3 on Friday.
Insight: He had a double and three RBIs, along with a walk. Stanton has a .273/.529/.364 line through four games. The three RBIs were his first ones of the season.
Dan Haren, SP4/10/2015 9:16:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Dan Haren had a nice season and team debut.
Insight: He pitched six innings and allowed one run on four hits, while striking out two. Haren threw just 79 pitches. However, the bullpen blew his chance at a win. Haren left the game leading 8-1, but his support could not hold the lead.
Tom Koehler, SP4/8/2015 9:11:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler allowed two runs during his season debut.
Insight: He went six innings and threw 92 pitches, but left with his team trailing 2-0. Koehler struck out four and allowed five hits along with three walks.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/8/2015 11:33:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has two home runs in five at-bats in his career versus Braves starter Shelby Miller.
Insight: It's a small sample size as Stanton has three hits and one walk in six plate appearances versus Miller, but it's hard to ignore the two home runs. Start Stanton as usual.
Mat Latos, SP4/7/2015 10:30:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Mat Latos did not make it out of the first inning during his team debut.
Insight: It was not an outing to remember for Latos, who gave up seven runs on six hits and two walks in just 2/3 of an inning. Look for him to bounce back next time out.
Dee Gordon, 2B4/6/2015 7:45:00 PM
Description: Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon went 1-for-4 in his regular season debut with Miami on Monday.
Insight: Gordon had a two-out RBI-single in the third inning. That was Miami's only run in the, 2-1, loss to Atlanta. Gordon could see a slight dip in production down in Miami, but he is still a top-10 option at second base.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF4/6/2015 10:48:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is just 2-for-21 (.095) against Braves starter Julio Teheran.
Insight: Stanton batted .288 with 37 HR and 105 RBI in 145 games last season. A repeat seems likely, but he might not get off to a fast start on opening day in this unfavorable matchup.
Jose Fernandez, SP3/1/2015 3:51:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Jose Fernandez will throw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year according to the Sun Sentinel.
Insight: Fernandez is expected to throw 15 fastballs and work his way up in future bullpen sessions. Fantasy owners, however, can still not expect Fernandez to return to game action until June.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF2/26/2015 2:46:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton stood in the batters box with live pitching for the first time since he was struck in the face last September.
Insight: He'll wear protective gear this season. The slugger should be ready to go for Opening Day. Stanton batted .288 with 37 HR and 105 RBI in 145 games last season. A repeat seems likely.
Martin Prado, 3B12/19/2014 4:56:00 PM
Description: The Marlins have traded for 3B/OF Martin Prado, RHP David Phelps, and cash considerations in exchange for RHP Nathan Eovaldi, 1B/OF Garrett Jones, and RHP Domingo German.
Insight: Prado will likely mad third base for Miami, sending Casey McGehee to a reserve role. Prado could be a sneaky option come draft day.
Dan Haren, SP12/11/2014 3:01:00 PM
Description: Dan Haren could enjoy throwing in pitcher-friendly Miami Park, but may retire instead of reporting.
Insight: Haren was 13-11 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. There is a lot of pitching talent on Miami, particularly if Jose Fernandez comes back and Haren doesn't have a guaranteed spot in the rotation.
Mat Latos, SP12/11/2014 2:43:00 PM
Description: The Cincinnati Reds have traded starter Mat Latos to the Miami Marlins.
Insight: Latos was 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.153 WHIP in 16 starts this season, but heads to a very pitcher-friendly Marlins Park and could be an undervalued selection this spring.
Andrew Heaney, SP12/10/2014 7:27:00 PM
Description: The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded for left-hander Andrew Heaney.
Insight: He is the main piece the Dodgers will be getting in return for Dee Gordon and Dan Haren. Heaney was the top prospect in Miami's organization, and he will have a chance to open up the season in Los Angeles' rotation. Kike Hernandez, Chris Hatcher, and Austin Barnes are also headed to the Dodgers.
Dee Gordon, 2B12/10/2014 6:52:00 PM
Description: The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded second baseman Dee Gordon to the Miami Marlins, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.
Insight: The Dodgers will reportedly get top prospect Andrew Heaney in return, and it is possible Dan Haren could be headed to Miami in the deal as well. We will let you know once we learn of all the specifics.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9/28/2014 11:11:00 AM
Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia will sit for the finale.
Insight: J.T. Realmuto gets the start today. Salty finishes 2014 with a .220/.320/.363 line, along with 11 homeruns and 44 RBI. There are better options at catcher heading into 2015.
Garrett Jones, 1B9/27/2014 10:21:00 AM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones should be avoided in his Saturday matchup with Stephen Strasburg.
Insight: Jones is just 1-for-18 with half the at-bats ending in strikeout. He's batted .248 this season with 15 HR and 53 RBI and does have eight hits in the last three games, but an extremely unfavorable matchup.
Tom Koehler, SP9/25/2014 7:21:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler picks up 10th win Thursday versus Philadelphia.
Insight: He went seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out seven. He finishes the year at 10-10 with a 3.81 ERA. Steve Cishek closed the door for Koehler, with his 39th save.
Brad Hand, SP9/24/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Marlins pitcher Brad Hand pitches well in no-decision.
Insight: He matched Phillies' starter Kyle Kendrick, going seven innings of one-run ball, on six hits and struck out two. Hand has been shuffled between reliever and starter this season, and is 3-8 with a 4.38 ERA.
Henderson Alvarez, SP9/23/2014 9:35:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez pitches gem in Tuesday's win over Philadelphia.
Insight: He went 7 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, and striking out two. Alvarez is now 12-6 with a 2.70 ERA on year. Miami heads into next season with a promising, young staff.
Casey McGehee, 3B9/21/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in Sunday's loss to the Nationals.
Insight: The Marlins had just four hits against the Nationals on Sunday and scored one run. McGehee has just one hit in his last 12 at-bats and is batting .244 since the All-Star break.
Nathan Eovaldi, SP9/21/2014 6:42:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs over six frames against the Nationals on Sunday, but lost, 2-1.
Insight: He gave up just seven hits, struck out four and walked none, but Eovaldi lost his 13th game of the year. He has lost seven straight decisions and is 6-13 with a 4.44 ERA this season.
Marcell Ozuna, CF9/21/2014 6:06:00 PM
Description: X-rays on Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna's right ankle came back negative according to Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post.
Insight: Even though the x-ray was positive news, Ozuna probably severely sprained his ankle and is likely done for the season. The outfielder is hitting .269/.317/.455 with 23 home runs and 85 RBI this year.
Jarred Cosart, SP9/20/2014 9:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart had a rough seventh inning.
Insight: He was sailing along through six innings, giving up no runs, but could not keep it going when he came out for the seventh. The big blow came on an RBI triple by Asdrubal Cabrera, which tied the game at 2-2. Cosart was then pulled, and Mike Dunn allowed the inherited runner to score.
Jose Fernandez, SP9/19/2014 4:45:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Jose Fernandez (Tommy John surgery in May) will be allowed to start throwing Oct. 1, according to Joe Frisaro of mlb.com.
Insight: Fernandez (4-2, 2.44 ERA) is still likely out until midway through the 2015 season., but its nice to see progress.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9/19/2014 12:20:00 PM
Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia is a career 5-for-11 (.455) against Nationals starter Doug Fister.
Insight: If you are looking for the 2012 version of Saltalamacchia who blasted 25 homers, he's not home. Salty is batting .225 with 11 homers and 44 RBI, but he does have a nice matchup.
Henderson Alvarez, SPCold9/17/2014 10:38:00 AM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez has struggled recently, heading into tonight's start against the Mets.
Insight: Alvarez has been solid throughout 2014, but that has not been the case over his past three starts (0-1 and 5.17 ERA). If owners have another option, do not be afraid to keep Alvarez on the bench.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/16/2014 10:29:00 PM
Description: Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Tuesday that the chances of Giancarlo Stanton returning this season are "not looking good" according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
Insight: With less than two weeks left in the season, doctors have advised against a return this year for Stanton. The outfielder suffered multiple facial fractures and lacerations requiring more than 20 stitches, as well as losing multiple teeth after taking a pitch in the face against Brewers starter Mike Fiers last Thursday. Miami is supposed to give an official update on Wednesday, but plan for Stanton to not be in your lineup from here on out.
Jarred Cosart, SPHot9/15/2014 1:33:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart has enjoyed his move to the National League.
Insight: After going 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA for the Astros, Cosart has seemed to find his groove with Miami. Not only is he 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with Marlins, Cosart has actually been even better over his past three starts (2-1, 1.74 ERA and 0.97 WHIP). If he is not in your lineup, get him in there.
Garrett Jones, 1B9/14/2014 9:11:00 AM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones hit a solo home run against Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick for Miami's only run on Saturday as Philadelphia won, 2-1.
Insight: Miami has struggled without Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup as they have scored just four runs in the last 22 innings since he left. Every hitter in the Marlin lineup loses fantasy value without Stanton, but besides Marcell Ozuna, Jones is the only power bat left for Miami. He has 15 homers with 51 RBI and is batting .242.
Henderson Alvarez, SP9/12/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez pitched seven innings, allowed one run on seven hits, struck out four and walked none in a no-decision against the Phillies on Friday.
Insight: Alvarez has had a solid season, replacing Jose Fernandez on top of the Miami rotation. Alvarez is 10-6 with a 2.81 ERA, 102 strikeouts and 1.23 WHIP in 166 and 1/3 innings this year.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/12/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is likely done for the season after taking a pitch to the face and suffering multiple fractures.
Insight: Stanton leads the NL in homers (37), RBI (105) slugging (.555), OPS (.950) and total bases (299). There is no player who can replace those numbers.
Garrett Jones, 1B9/11/2014 1:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones is 1-for-10 lifetime with five strikeouts against Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers.
Insight: Fiers is a decent pitcher, but it is not like he will be in Cy Young contention anytime soon. Jones just doesn't see the ball well against him. Don't start Jones on Thursday.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/10/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is 0-for-9 with four strikeouts against Brewers right-hander Wily Peralta.
Insight: Stanton leads the NL in homers (37), RBI (105) slugging (.556) and OPS (.951). It's tough to sit the NL MVP candidate, but owners should be aware that this is not an ideal matchup for Stanton.
Christian Yelich, LFHot9/7/2014 6:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich extended his hitting streak, going 2-for-4 with a run on Sunday against the Braves.
Insight: Yelich has scored runs in his last six games and is batting .341 with three extra-base hits and three RBI over his hitting streak. If you need a left fielder to give you a boost these last few weeks, Yelich is a great choice. He hit .339 in August and is batting .381 so far in six games this month.
Brad Hand, SP9/7/2014 6:06:00 PM
Description: Brad Hand pitched six scoreless innings against the Braves on Sunday. He gave up five hits, struck out three and walked none.
Insight: It was the second time this season that Hand went at least six innings of scoreless baseball this year. Hand improves to 3-6 in 13 starts with a 4.45 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/7/2014 10:55:00 AM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is 2-for-18 in his lifetime against Braves starter Julio Teheran.
Insight: Both of Staton's hits though are extra-base hits, a double and home run. He also has three RBI and four walks. It's tough to sit the NL MVP candidate, but owners should be aware that this is not an ideal matchup for Stanton.
Casey McGehee, 3B9/6/2014 10:48:00 PM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run on Saturday in a loss against the Braves.
Insight: McGehee has hits in his last nine games and is batting .364 over that stretch. McGehee has been a tremendous surprise for the Marlins this year, hitting .295 with 32 extra-base hits and 66 RBI. The only blemish on McGehee's resume this year is his lack of home runs. He only has three the whole season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/5/2014 10:29:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-5 with a double, run and two RBI against the Braves on Friday.
Insight: Stanton snapped his three-game home run streak, but he has two hits in each of his last three games. He also has seven hits, including the three home runs, two doubles and six RBI in his last 17 at-bats. Stanton continues to have big leads in the National League in both home runs (36) and RBI (104) along with hitting .296.
Justin Bour, 1B9/5/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Marlins first baseman Justin Bour was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored in the victory over the Braves on Friday.
Insight: Bour was making his first major league appearance since July 13 and had the best game of his big league career. He, however, remains only relevant in dynasty leagues. Bour has eight hits in 32 at-bats this year.
Marcell Ozuna, CF9/5/2014 10:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and four RBI against the Braves on Friday.
Insight: As we have seen in the past, Ozuna is a very streaky hitter. Friday was Ozuna at his best. He is hitting .264 with 19 home runs and 78 RBI this year.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/1/2014 5:28:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton went 1-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk Monday against the Mets.
Insight: Stanton went 2-for-18 with one RBI in his last five games of August but still hit .289 with eight homers, 25 RBI and a .998 OPS during the month. He's hitting .292 with 34 homers, 99 RBI, 84 runs and a .954 OPS and is one of the top contenders for NL MVP.
Henderson Alvarez, SP 9/1/2014 4:14:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez left Monday's start with a left oblique strain.
Insight: With Jose Fernandez out, Alvarez has stepped up as Miami's top starter this season and kept them in the Wild Card hunt, but this could end his year. He's 10-6 with a 2.88 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and 98 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings.
Marcell Ozuna, CF9/1/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is a .091 hitter (1-for-11) against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler.
Insight: Ozuna is one of the most streaky hitters around, but has become a viable fantasy option this season with a .261 batting average, 19 HR, 72 RBI and 62 runs scored. Monday, however, is an unfavorable matchup.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF9/1/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is just 1-for-12 against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler.
Insight: Stanton has to be considered a strong candidate for NL MVP with 33 homers, 98 RBI, walks (89), OBP (.401), SLG (.550), OPS (.951). Having said all that this isn't a great matchup for the slugger.
Nathan Eovaldi, SP8/31/2014 8:03:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed one run on nine hits, struck out six and walked one in six and 2/3 innings against the Braves on Sunday.
Insight: Unfortunately, Braves' starter Alex Wood was even better, pitching eight shutout innings, so Eovaldi received the loss. The lone run of the day was Evan Gattis' solo home run in the second inning. Eovaldi is 6-10 with a 4.19 ERA this year.
Christian Yelich, LFHot8/31/2014 9:45:00 AM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich is a career .500 hitter against Braves starter Alex Wood.
Insight: Yelich has gone 36-for-105 (.343) in August and his OPS is almost .900. Start him in this favorable matchup.
Jarred Cosart, SPHot8/31/2014 9:08:00 AM
Description: Marlins starter Jarred Cosart went seven inning without yielding a run to lower his ERA to 3.80.
Insight: In case you have not been paying attention, Cosart has pitched well this season for two mediocre clubs (Houston and Miami) and last night earned his 12th win of the season. He's 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA and 1.030 WHIP after the trade to the Marlins.
Garrett Jones, 1B8/30/2014 10:54:00 AM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones is a career .417 hitter (10-for-24) with a home run, three doubles and six RBI against Braves starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Jones is struggling this month, batting .197 with two doubles and four RBI. He is also only hitting .225 with three home runs and eight RBI since the All-Star break. So if you are going to start him, today would probably be the day.
Marcell Ozuna, CF8/29/2014 10:51:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI against the Braves on Friday.
Insight: Ozuna has cooled off since four straight multi-hit games, which included three straight contests with a home run, last week, but he was feeling it on Friday. The outfielder is one of the most streaky hitters around, so this has almost become expected. He has seven multi-hit games this month but is hitting .227.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF8/29/2014 10:21:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton Napoli is just 1-for-10 with six strikeouts against Braves starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Stanton has to be considered for MVP as he leads the NL with 33 homers, 97 RBI, walks (87), OBP (.403), SLG (.558), OPS (.961) and total bases 273. Having said all that this isn't a great matchup for the slugger.
Christian Yelich, LFHot8/24/2014 8:04:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich is a career .500 hitter against Braves starter Alex Wood.
Insight: Yelich has gone 36-for-105 (.343) in August and his OPS is almost .900. Start him in this favorable matchup.
Garrett Jones, 1B8/23/2014 11:07:00 AM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones is 9-for-16 (.563) with two doubles and two homers in his career against Rockies starter Jordan Lyles.
Insight: Those numbers are too good to ignore even though Jones has struggled since the All-Star break. He has a .770 OPS against right-handers this season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot8/23/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton leads the NL with 32 homers and 92 RBI. He's batted .342 with nine homers, 23 RBI and a 1.211 OPS in his last 22 games and .480 with 10 RBI in his last seven.
Insight: Miami had the lowest payroll in baseball on Opening Day and they lost ace Jose Fernandez to Tommy John surgery after eight starts, but Stanton's production has helped the Marlins go 64-63. With Jonathan Lucroy's production slipping a bit, the NL MVP race is likely going to come down to Stanton and Clayton Kershaw.
Marcell Ozuna, CFHot8/23/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna has homered in three straight games and driven in 10 runs in his last four.
Insight: Ozuna went 3-for-5 with a homer, five RBI and two runs Friday at Colorado. The 23-year-old hit .151 with zero homers and five RBI in his first 16 games this month, but he now has 19 homers and 70 RBI in 453 at-bats this year.
Casey McGehee, 3BCold8/20/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee has gone 0-for-16 in his last four games.
Insight: McGehee's average is down to .294, its lowest point since June 4. He's driven in one run over 61 at-bats in August.
Christian Yelich, LFHot8/20/2014 8:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich has gone 19-for-37 (.514) with four doubles, six runs and three steals over his last nine games.
Insight: Yelich was 3-for-4 with a walk Wednesday. He's raised his average 21 points since Aug. 10 and is now hitting .288 with a .792 OPS.
Marcell Ozuna, RF8/20/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a double and a homer Wednesday against the Rangers.
Insight: Ozuna has gone 7-for-15 with two doubles, two homers and five RBI in his last four games after coming out of the All-Star break in a 17-for-96 (.177) slump.
Justin Bour, 1B8/19/2014 3:15:00 PM
Description: Marlins first baseman Justin Bour was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored in the victory over the Braves on Friday.
Insight: Bour was making his first major league appearance since July 13 and had the best game of his big league career. He, however, remains only relevant in dynasty leagues. Bour has eight hits in 32 at-bats this year.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF8/17/2014 4:56:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton blasted his 32nd home run of the season and knocked in four to post a career high of 88 RBI.
Insight: He's also set a career mark for walks at 77. Just think of his fantasy value if he had protection in the lineup like a Victor Martinez behind his as Miguel Cabrera does.
Henderson Alvarez, SPHot8/16/2014 9:56:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez gave up one run on five hits in seven innings Saturday against Arizona to improve to 9-5.
Insight: Alvarez spent the past two and a half weeks on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, but he didn't miss a beat. The right-hander has dazzled this season, recording a 2.43 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 144 2/3 innings.
Jarred Cosart, SP8/12/2014 9:43:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Jarred Cosart showed no ill effects of an oblique injury in his dominant start against the Cardinals Tuesday night.
Insight: Cosart (10-8, 4.27 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) allowed three hits, all singles, walked one and struck out three over seven scoreless innings. He had given up 23 earned runs on 36 hits in his previous 26 2/3 innings.
Casey McGehee, 3B8/12/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee is just 1-for-15 (.067) against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.
Insight: Miami's signing of McGehee (.302) has worked out well for the team and fantasy owners. With opponents avoiding Giancarlo Stanton in RBI situations, the result has been that McGehee has been in a great spot and has knocked in 60 runs despite hitting just three home runs. This matchup, however, is not favorable.
Christian Yelich, LF8/11/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, a steal and two runs Monday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Yelich's stats don't blow you away, but he's been pretty good in multiple categories. He's hitting .272 with nine homers, 43 RBI, 66 runs, 14 steals and a .765 OPS.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot8/11/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has hit five homers in his last five games and eight in his last 12.
Insight: Stanton struggled for most of July, but he homered in each of the last two games of the month and has blasted six home runs in August. He went 2-for-3 with two homers, three RBI and a walk Monday against the Cardinals and is now tied with Jose Abreu and Nelson Cruz for the MLB lead in homers with 31.
Garrett Jones, 1B8/11/2014 11:10:00 AM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones is 7-for-13 (.538) with a pair of homers and five RBI versus Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller.
Insight: Jones has struggled since June, hitting just four homers in 56 games and batting .220.
Casey McGehee, 3B8/10/2014 5:31:00 PM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee hit his third homer of the season Sunday against the Reds.
Insight: McGehee has driven in 60 runs and is hitting .300 despite his complete lack of power, but fantasy owners need more pop from their corner infielders.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot8/10/2014 5:29:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton went deep for the third time in his last four games and the sixth time in his last 11 games Sunday at Cincinnati.
Insight: Stanton struggled for most of July, but he's rediscovered his power stroke. He now has 29 homers and is four ahead of Anthony Rizzo for the NL lead.
Brad Hand, SP8/10/2014 5:28:00 PM
Description: After going 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in his previous seven starts, Marlins starter Brad Hand gave up seven runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings Sunday at Cincinnati.
Insight: Hand has struck out just 5.0 batters per nine innings as a starter this season and he has a 4.65 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP overall. There's no need to bother with him in most leagues.
Henderson Alvarez, SPHot8/10/2014 1:04:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is expected to return from the disabled list Thursday against the Diamondbacks, according to the Miami Herald.
Insight: That's the first day Alvarez, who ranks fifth in the NL with a 2.48 ERA, is eligible to return. He's been on the DL with right shoulder inflammation.
Jarred Cosart, SP8/10/2014 1:01:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Jarred Cosart (oblique) has been cleared to start Tuesday against the Cardinals, according to the Miami Herald.
Insight: The Astros traded Cosart to the Marlins on July 31 and Cosart allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings the next day. He was scratched from his last start with oblique soreness, but he's ready to go Tuesday. He's 9-8 with a 4.51 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP and a 78/55 K/BB in 121 2/3 innings.
Nathan Eovaldi, SP 8/8/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi has allowed one run on two hits over 15 innings in August, facing the Reds in both starts.
Insight: Eovaldi's terrific start (3.05 ERA in first 13 starts) gave way to a 6.41 ERA from June 13 to July 28, but he's back on track. He threw eight scoreless innings Friday to get his ERA back below 4.00. He's 6-6 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 105 Ks in 151 innings, so he's a decent NL-only option.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot8/8/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton homered for the fifth time in his last nine games Friday at Cincinnati.
Insight: Stanton struggled for most of July, but he's rediscovered his power stroke. He leads the NL and is third in baseball with 28 homers.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot8/6/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton reached base four times Tuesday at Pittsburgh and he's crushed Pirates starter Jeff Locke in the past.
Insight: Stanton is 6-for-9 with two homers against Locke. He has a good chance to do some damage Wednesday.
Brad Hand, SP8/5/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Brad Hand allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Hand rejoined the rotation on July 3 and has gone 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in seven starts since then. He's worth a look in NL-only leagues.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot8/1/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton homered again Friday against the Reds.
Insight: Make that three straight games with a homer for Stanton. He hit .205 with a two home runs and 32 Ks over 83 at-bats in his first 23 games of July, but he's gone 5-for-13 with a double, three homers and five RBI in his last four games.
Henderson Alvarez, SPHot8/1/2014 5:34:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.
Insight: Alvarez threw seven scoreless innings Tuesday against the Nationals and ranks fourth in the NL with a 2.48 ERA. Jacob Turner, who was going to be replaced by Jarred Cosart in the rotation, will take Alvarez' spot.
Jarred Cosart, SP 7/31/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Jarred Cosart, Enrique Hernandez and Austin Wates have been traded from the Astros to the Marlins for Jake Marisnick, Colin Moran, Frances Martes and a 2015 compensation pick.
Insight: The 24-year-old Cosart is the only player in this trade that fantasy owners need to worry about this season, and he's 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP and 75 Ks in 116 1/3 innings. In other words, he's really not someone fantasy owners need to own.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF7/31/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has homered in two straight games.
Insight: Stanton hit .205 with a two home runs and 32 Ks over 83 at-bats in his first 23 games of July, but he'll go into August on a high note. He went 4-for-10 with a double and two homers the past three games.
Tom Koehler, SP 7/31/2014 10:01:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler allowed two unearned runs on five hits in seven innings Thursday against the Reds.
Insight: Koehler had a 5.27 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP in his previous 12 starts. He's 7-8 with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP on the year.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF7/30/2014 4:07:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton went 1-for-3 with a solo homer Wednesday against Washington.
Insight: Stanton's month of July leaves a lot to be desired. He's hit .225 with three home runs and 12 RBI. He had a .902 OPS or better in each of the first three months.
Henderson Alvarez, SPHot7/29/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez held the Nationals to three hits over seven scoreless innings in a win Tuesday night.
Insight: Alvarez ranks fourth in the NL with a 2.48 ERA, and he's continued to have success despite striking out very few batters (5.43 K/9).
Garrett Jones, 1B7/29/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones is an ugly 1-for-18 (.056) against Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg.
Insight: Despite a six-game hitting streak don't be surprised if Jones (.255, 11 HR, 41 RBI) gets the night off, but even if he's in the lineup fantasy owners should stay far away.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF7/29/2014 9:58:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has frequently gotten the best of his matchup with Washington right-hander Stephen Strasburg (9-for-26 with three home runs).
Insight: The slugger is batting .290 with 23 HR and a league-leading 69 RBI, but is hitting just .205 in July with an ugly .636 OPS.
Nathan Eovaldi, SPCold7/28/2014 10:21:00 PM
Description: Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi has allowed 18 runs on 21 hits over 16 1/3 innings his last three starts.
Insight: Eovaldi had a 3.05 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in his first 13 starts, but he's been tagged for 64 hits and 38 earned runs over 53 1/3 innings in his last nine (6.41 ERA, 1.44 WHIP). His ERA and WHIP stand at 4.37 and 1.26, respectively, after he allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings Monday against the Nationals. Eovaldi throws as hard as anyone in the league, but he doesn't have the secondary stuff to generate strikeouts.
Marcell Ozuna, RF7/27/2014 4:12:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna has hit just two homers in July after blasting five in each of the previous two months.
Insight: Ozuna went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday at Houston. The 23-year-old has hit 16 home runs and driven in 55 runs this season.
Marcell Ozuna, RF7/26/2014 4:12:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is not in Saturday night's starting lineup.
Insight: Ozuna is just 1-for-15 over the past four games and can probably use the night off. He has hit 15 homers and driven in 54 runs.
Marcell Ozuna, RF7/24/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is 4-for-8 with two home runs versus Braves starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Ozuna has hit 15 homers and driven in 54 runs, but he's not swinging a good bat at the moment (6-for-last-34) and may not be ready to take advantage of this matchup.
Christian Yelich, LFHot7/23/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich went 2-for-3 with a walk, a steal and an RBI Wednesday at Atlanta.
Insight: Yelich is 27-for-75 (.360) in July, but just three of his hits went for extra bases. He's batting .282 with 27 extra-base hits (8 HR) in 330 at-bats this season.
Christian Yelich, LFHot7/22/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich has batted .347 in July.
Insight: Yelich (.278, .784 OPS) went 2-for-4 with a walk, one RBI and three runs Tuesday at Atlanta. He's scored 56 runs in 81 games this season.
Garrett Jones, 1B7/22/2014 3:28:00 PM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones is not in Tuesday's starting lineup versus Mike Minor and the Braves.
Insight: That's his reward for producing the game-winning two-run single Monday night, he doesn't have to face a left-hander. He's batting .164 against southpaws this season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF7/22/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has four career home runs in 19 at-bats against Braves left-hander Mike Minor.
Insight: The slugger has mashed left-handers this season batting .373 with a 1.190 OPS. Stanton hasn't been hitting much of anything of late, however, .154 over the past two weeks, but Minor is still likely to pitch around him in any key situation.
Henderson Alvarez, SP7/21/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez (shin) has been cleared to start Thursday against the Astros, according to the Miami Herald.
Insight: Alvarez took a comebacker off the left shin Saturday and had to exit his start. He's gone 6-5 with a 2.64 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP and 75 Ks in 122 2/3 innings this season. Fantasy owners might want to sell high; because his K/9 is just 5.5 and he doesn't get a lot of run support from the Marlins, his value relies heavily on his ERA.
Jordany Valdespin, CF7/21/2014 3:39:00 PM
Description: Miami IF/OF Jordany Valdespin is expected to get regular time at second base.
Insight: Valdespin, a career .221 hitter, has hits in each of his first two games with the Marlins. He still doesn't offer much to fantasy owners.
Casey McGehee, 3BHot7/20/2014 5:17:00 PM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Sunday against the Giants.
Insight: McGehee has managed to drive in 56 runs despite hitting just two home runs all season. He's batting .322 with a .786 OPS.
Henderson Alvarez, SP7/19/2014 8:43:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez took a comebacker off his shin and was forced from Saturday night's game.
Insight: Alvarez is putting together a fine season, going 6-4 with a stunning 2.63 ERA. We think he's likely to be ready to take his next turn in the rotation.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF7/18/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton went deep Friday against the Giants.
Insight: With the home run, Stanton ended his longest homer drought of the season (15 games). He leads the NL with 22 round-trippers.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF7/18/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is a lifetime .636 hitter (7-for-11) with five doubles against Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner.
Insight: Stanton still leads the NL in homers (21) and RBI (63), but he's struggled of late, batting just .205 over the past two weeks.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFCold7/11/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is just 1-for-10 versus Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler.
Insight: Stanton still leads the NL in homers (21) and RBI (63), but he's struggled of late, batting just .205 over the past two weeks and should probably be avoided Friday night.
Nathan Eovaldi, SP7/9/2014 7:08:00 PM
Description: Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed one run on four hits in seven innings Wednesday at Arizona, but Steve Cishek's blown save cost him his sixth win.
Insight: Eovaldi (3.61 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) has an overpowering fastball, but his lack of a secondary pitch prevents him from racking up strikeouts. The right-hander has a 6.24 K/9 in 119 2/3 innings.
Casey McGehee, 3BHot7/6/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: Miami 3B Casey McGehee continues to swing a hot bat, knocking out a couple more hits and an RBI, his 53rd of the season.
Insight: McGehee is now batting .320 after Sunday's two-hit game. McGehee is proving to be a very good clutch hitter, too bad he has no home run power. He did hit 23 long balls in 2010, but that was a lifetime ago.
Adeiny Hechavarria, SS7/6/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Miami shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Hechavarria (.272, 0 HR, 17 RBI, 4 SB) had been dealing with a strained triceps.
Casey McGehee, 3BHot7/5/2014 5:55:00 PM
Description: Miami 3B Casey McGehee continues to swing a hot bat, knocking in the tying run off Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal.
Insight: McGehee is now batting .317 after Saturday's three-hit game. Throw in 52 RBI despite just one home run and McGehee is proving to be a very good clutch hitter. Not bad for a guy who spent last season in Japan.
Garrett Jones, 1B7/5/2014 10:38:00 AM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones is a career .700 hitter (7-for-10) with a pair of home runs and a 2.250 OPS against Cardinals young right-hander Shelby Miller.
Insight: Jones has hit double-digit home runs for the sixth consecutive season, but has only hit two long balls in the past four weeks (23 games).
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C 7/2/2014 10:38:00 PM
Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI Wednesday against the Phillies.

Tom Koehler, SPHot7/2/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler has given up four runs and recorded a 21/4 K/BB over his last 19 innings.
Insight: Koehler gave up just three hits and struck out seven batters in six scoreless innings Wednesday against the Phillies to improve to 6-6 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CCold7/1/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia is 2-for-17 (.118) with 10 strikeouts versus Phillies right-hander A.J. Burnett.
Insight: He's been disappointing so far in 2014 and as all his numbers are down from a season ago (.241, 7 HR, 20 RBI, .751 OPS).
Andrew Heaney, SP6/29/2014 4:33:00 PM
Description: Marlins left-hander Andrew Heaney has a 5.29 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP after his first three career starts (0-3).
Insight: Heaney held the Athletics scoreless over the first five innings Sunday afternoon, but he gave up four runs in the sixth. He's still worth holding in all leagues.
Marcell Ozuna, RF6/29/2014 4:31:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna left Saturday's game against Oakland due to cramping in right hamstring and didn't start Sunday, but he had a pinch-hit solo home run.
Insight: Ozuna has hit 14 homers and driven in 47 runs in 291 at-bats this season, putting the 23-year-old on pace for 28 homers and 93 RBI.
Christian Yelich, LF6/29/2014 11:22:00 AM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich (back) has been activated from the disabled list and will bat leadoff on Sunday.
Insight: The outfielder provides a combination of speed and power, but not quite at the level we need to be fantasy worthy. That should come down the road.
Marcell Ozuna, RF6/29/2014 10:00:00 AM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna left Saturday's game against Oakland due to cramping in right hamstring
Insight: On the year, he's batting .262 with 13 homers, 46 RBI, 39 runs and a .750 OPS making him a viable fantasy outfielder. Call him day-to-day.
Adeiny Hechavarria, SS6/26/2014 6:01:00 PM
Description: Miami shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria has been placed on the 15-day DL.
Insight: Hechavarria (.272, 0 HR, 17 RBI) has been diagnosed with a strained triceps. Ed Lucas (.252, 1 HR, 5 RBI) should see regular at bats while he's out.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF6/24/2014 10:39:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton bashed three hits Tuesday in a loss to Philadelphia.
Insight: Stanton's average has gone up 13 points during his five-game hitting streak. He leads all National League hitters in home runs (20) and RBI (58) and is eighth in batting average (.308).
Nathan Eovaldi, SP6/23/2014 10:42:00 PM
Description: Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi rebounded from two poor outings in a row with 6 1/3 scoreless innings Monday at Philadelphia.
Insight: Eovaldi (5-3, 3.52 ERA) has commanded his stuff much better in 2014, lowering his BB/9 from 3.39 to 1.54. The right-hander has one of the hardest fastballs in the majors at 95.5 mph, but he lacks the secondary stuff to be a big-time strikeout artist (6.86 K/9).
Derek Dietrich, 2B6/23/2014 4:38:00 PM
Description: With oft-injured Rafael Furcal back on the injured list, Derek Dietrich could get plenty of playing time for the Marlins.
Insight: Dietrich has hit a respectable .246 with five homers and a .773 OPS this season, but mashed the ball at New Orleans batting .340 with a 1.151 OPS in 13 games.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C6/22/2014 11:53:00 AM
Description: Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia will sit out Sunday's series finale against New York.
Insight: He's gone 3-for-11 since making his return from the disabled list earlier this week. Jeff Mathis (.203, 2 HR, 5 RB) is getting the start in Salty's place.
Rafael Furcal, 2B6/22/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: The Marlins have gone ahead and put second baseman Rafael Furcal on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: He's been diagnosed with a strained hamstring. Furcal (.171, 0 HR, 2 RBI) has only appeared in nine games this season. Fantasy owners have no use for him.
Rafael Furcal, 2B6/21/2014 6:38:00 PM

Insight: Furcal (.171, 0 HR, 2 RBI) had to leave Saturday's after the third inning. This shouldn't sideline him for too long.

Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez has a 1.44 ERA in 56 1/3 innings at Marlins Park this season.

Andrew Heaney, SP6/19/2014 9:56:00 PM
Description: Marlins prospect Andrew Heaney held his own in his big league debut Thursday against the Mets.
Insight: Heaney gave up four hits and one run while striking out three and walking one over six innings. However, he dropped a 1-0 decision to Zack Wheeler. Heaney was terrific in the minors and should be owned in all leagues.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF6/19/2014 5:03:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton left Wednesday's game with a wrist contusion, but he is in the lineup Thursday, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel.

Insight: He didn't have to miss any starts. The hard-throwing right-hander is 4-2 this year with a 3.50 ERA in 87 1/3 innings.
Adeiny Hechavarria, SSHot6/18/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria mashed four hits in Tuesday's victory over the Cubs.
Insight: Hechavarria is quietly heating up. Over his last six contests, the shortstop has hit .444 with ten singles and one double. Though not a long-term fantasy option, feel free to ride Hechavarria (.272, 0 HR, 15 RBI) during his hot streak.
Garrett Jones, 1B 6/17/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones went 1-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Jones hit a go-ahead three-run homer off Brian Schlitter. Jones has nine homers against righties this season and is batting .188 with zero homers against lefties.
Andrew Heaney, SP6/17/2014 4:14:00 PM

Insight: He'll start Thursday against the Mets. The left-hander had a 2.47 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and a 79/15 K/BB over 76 2/3 innings in the minors this season and should be added in all leagues.
Randy Wolf, SP6/16/2014 8:53:00 PM

Insight: Wolf, who has now pitched for six teams since 2008, lasted just six games in Miami, registering a 5.26 ERA in 25 2/3 innings. The 37-year-old may catch on elsewhere but his days of being a useful fantasy contributor are over.

Description: The Marlins have designated Kevin Slowey for assignment.
Insight: Slowey has mostly been used as a long reliever this season, logging a 5.30 ERA over 37 1/3 innings. The right-hander has gone 4-15 since winning 13 games for Minnesota in 2010.
Jacob Turner, SPCold6/16/2014 7:49:00 PM
Description: Marlins right-hander Jacob Turner is headed back to the bullpen. SOURCE: Juan Rodriguez, Miami Sun Sentinel
Insight: After three rough outings in a row, manager Mike Redmond decided it was time for a change. Turner owns a 6.38 ERA in nine appearances this season and shouldn't be owned in any fantasy leagues.
Jake Marisnick, CF6/16/2014 3:05:00 PM
Description: The Marlins will start recent call-up Jake Marisnick in center field Monday against the Cubs. He'll hit in the leadoff spot.

Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee ripped three hits in Sunday's victory over the Pirates.
Insight: McGehee's hitting streak is now up to ten games. He's on pace for over 100 RBI this season. McGehee hasn't reached that threshold since 2010 when he played for Milwaukee.
Christian Yelich, LF6/15/2014 12:09:00 PM
Description: Miami left fielder Christian Yelich (back) is out of the lineup Sunday.
Insight: He suffered a lower-back strain early in Friday's game. Reed Johnson started in left field Saturday and Rafael Furcal took over for Yelich as the leadoff hitter in Miami's order. Miami will use that setup again Sunday.
Marcell Ozuna, RF 6/14/2014 7:47:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna went 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer, a walk and three RBI Saturday against the Pirates.
Insight: All three of the home runs and all nine of the RBI Ozuna has in June have come across three games. He's gone without an RBI in the other nine games this month, so he isn't exactly the steadiest daily-league performer. On the year, he's batting .271 with 12 homers, 42 RBI, 33 runs and a .785 OPS.
Christian Yelich, LF6/14/2014 4:53:00 PM

Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich had four hits and four RBI Tuesday at Texas and has gone 8-for-14 in his last three games.
Insight: Yelich is only hitting .259 this season, but he has contributed solid numbers across the board. He has six homers, 24 RBI, 41 runs, 10 steals and a .762 OPS.
Christian Yelich, LF6/8/2014 7:47:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich hustled his way to two stolen bases Sunday against the Cubs.
Insight: Yelich also went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. The 22-year-old has only been caught stealing once in 11 attempts this season.
Henderson Alvarez, SP6/8/2014 4:25:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez exited Sunday's game with a strained left hip. SOURCE: Juan Rodriguez, Sun Sentinel
Insight: Henderson allowed two runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Though opponents are hitting over .280 against him, Henderson's 2.56 ERA this season is ninth-lowest in the National League. Consider him day-to-day.
Christian Yelich, LF6/7/2014 7:36:00 PM
Description: Miami left fielder Christian Yelich went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Saturday against the Cubs.
Insight: Yelich entered the game just one for his last 17 with nine strikeouts. He's hitting only.245, but he has a .328 OBP, six homers, 20 RBI, 39 runs and eight steals.
Garrett Jones, 1B6/6/2014 8:59:00 PM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones went off for three hits Friday against Chicago.
Insight: It's his second three-hit game in a row. After a disappointing year in Pittsburgh last season (.233, 15 HR, 51 RBI), Jones seems to have resurrected his career in Miami with a .278 average through 58 games. He's a good player to have in fantasy because he's eligible at outfield as well as first base.
J.T. Realmuto, CHot6/6/2014 11:13:00 AM
Description: Marlins third string catcher J.T. Realmuto rapped out a pair of hits and knocked in three in his first big league start Thursday night.
Insight: With Jarrod Saltalamacchia sidelined and Jeff Mathis ineffective with the bat, Realmuto may see more work than expected. Realmuto batted .301 with an .867 OPS at Double-A Jacksonville.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CCold6/6/2014 11:09:00 AM
Description: Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was still reporting post-concussion symptoms earlier in the week so he isn't likely to return in seven days.
Insight: Saltalamacchia is batting just .177 with one homer and 30 Ks in May. Jeff Mathis has done little with the opportunity to play regularly and just-brought-up J.T. Realmuto knocked in three runs with two hits Thursday night in his first start.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF6/5/2014 8:19:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run of June Thursday against the Rays.

Casey McGehee, 3B6/5/2014 8:12:00 PM
Description: Miami third baseman Casey McGehee had four hits and four runs in five at-bats Thursday against the Rays.

Justin Bour, 1B6/5/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Recently brought up (as in Wednesday) Justin Bour will get to make his debut Thursday as the Marlins DH versus Jake Odorizzi and the Rays.
Insight: Bour played well at Triple-A New Orleans, batting .330 with nine homers, 36 RBI and a .969 OPS. There is no pressure on the 26-year old who could be the long-term answer at 1B.
Christian Yelich, LF6/4/2014 3:56:00 PM
Description: Miami left fielder Christian Yelich will take a seat Wednesday against the Rays. SOURCE: Marlins on Twitter
Insight: Yelich is hitless for the series (0-for-5, 3 BB). Reed Johnson (.324, 2 HR, 12 RBI) is taking over in left field.
Henderson Alvarez, SPHot6/3/2014 9:39:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez earned his fifth career shutout Tuesday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: He only needed 88 pitches to finish off the Rays. Alvarez hasn't allowed a run in his last 21 innings. The talented right-hander now owns the tenth-lowest ERA in the National League at 2.62.
Henderson Alvarez, SP6/3/2014 1:21:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez (elbow stiffness) is set to start Tuesday night against Tampa Bay after he threw a pain-free, 20-pitch bullpen session on Saturday.
Insight: Alvarez has been one of baseball's more reliable starters this year, posting a 2.97 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 11 starts, but the fact that's he's coming off an injury-shortened start (62 pitches) coupled with his horrendous lifetime numbers against the Rays (0-5, 6.28 ERA in 28 2/3 IP) makes him a risky play.
Randy Wolf, SP6/2/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Miami left-hander Randy Wolf won for the first time this season Monday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: If you want to get technical, it's actually his first win since September of 2012. Wolf looked sharp on Monday, surrendering just three hits and one earned run over six innings. The victory puts the Marlins one game over .500. Wolf's next outing will come Saturday against Chicago.
Kevin Gregg, RP6/2/2014 8:05:00 PM
Description: Kevin Gregg and the Marlins have reached terms on a minor league contract. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Gregg saved 33 games for the Cubs last season but figures to be a setup man with the Marlins. This will be his second stint with Miami after playing there from 2007 to 2008.
Jeff Mathis, C6/2/2014 3:04:00 PM
Description: Miami catcher Jeff Mathis will start again on Monday with Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the sidelines for seven days due to a concussion.
Insight: Mathis (.300, 2 HR, 4 RBI) hasn't shown much power, he's never hit double-digit homers in a season, but his OPS is .867 for 18 games this season.
Garrett Jones, 1BHot6/1/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones had a .904 OPS in May and he has a favorable matchup Sunday against Braves starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Jones has hit .389 with two doubles and one homer in 18 at-bats against Harang. The 32-year-old is hitting .286 with 12 doubles, eight homers and an .897 OPS against right-handers this season.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CCold6/1/2014 9:48:00 AM
Description: The Marlins have placed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the 7-day disabled list.
Insight: Saltalamacchia is dealing with a concussion. He's batted just .177 with one homer and 30 Ks in May. Jeff Mathis will take over as the starting backstop for Miami.
Christian Yelich, LF5/31/2014 9:45:00 PM
Description: Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich belted three hits in Saturday's loss to Atlanta.
Insight: Yelich has been a borderline fantasy player for most of the season, hitting .255 with five homers and 18 RBI over 212 at bats. He batted .288 as a rookie in 2013 so Yelich certainly has the ability to be a difference maker. Maybe Saturday's outing will lead to a hot streak.
Henderson Alvarez, SP5/31/2014 4:10:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez should be good to go Tuesday against the Rays. His last start was cut short because of elbow stiffness. SOURCE: Joe Frisaro, MLB.com
Insight: Alvarez has been money all season, delivering a 2.97 ERA over 11 starts. Unfortunately, he's winless in five career starts versus Tampa Bay (0-5, 6.28 ERA in 28 2/3 IP).
Giancarlo Stanton, RF5/30/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is just 1-for-12 (.083) against Braves starter Julio Teheran.
Insight: Stanton has been one of the top players in baseball this season and is hitting .318 with an NL leading 15 home runs, 49 RBI, 38 runs, four steals and a 1.034 OPS. He's got a tough matchup on Friday.
Casey McGehee, 3B5/28/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Miami third baseman Casey McGehee led the way with four hits Wednesday in a ten-inning win over Washington.
Insight: All four of his hits were singles. Despite hitting just one home run this season, McGehee is on pace for 98 RBI, which would be his most since 2010 when he was second among big league third basemen with 104 runs driven in.
Henderson Alvarez, SP5/28/2014 9:25:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez had to leave Wednesday's game early after feeling stiffness in his right elbow. SOURCE: Joe Frisaro, MLB.com
Insight: Alvarez was dominating before the injury, scattering five hits over five shutout frames. His 2.97 ERA in 11 starts this season leads the team. Until we hear more, consider him day-to-day.
Nathan Eovaldi, SP 5/26/2014 5:58:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi has given up three earned runs on 13 hits with a 7/2 K/BB over 12 1/3 innings since his worst start of the year on May 15.
Insight: Eovaldi gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings at San Francisco three starts ago, but he's won his last two games and is 4-2 with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He's lowered his BB% from 8.9 in 2013 to 4.9 this year.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot5/26/2014 5:55:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, two RBI and two runs Monday at Washington.
Insight: Stanton has been one of the top players in baseball this season and is hitting .316 with 15 home runs, an MLB-leading 49 RBI, 37 runs, four steals and a 1.027 OPS.
Marcell Ozuna, RFHot5/25/2014 8:26:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna has belted three homers in his last five games.
Insight: The 23-year-old Ozuna is batting .261 with nine jacks, 31 RBI and a .750 OPS this season.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C5/25/2014 11:19:00 AM
Description: Miami will be without catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia Sunday against the Brewers. SOURCE: Joe Frisaro, MLB.com
Insight: We're chalking it up to a routine off day though it's worth noting Salty did sit out a few games earlier this week because of an ankle injury. Jeff Mathis (.294, 2 HR, 4 RBI) is starting in his place.
Jacob Turner, SP5/24/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Jacob Turner finally entered the win column Saturday against Milwaukee.
Insight: He held the Brewers to eight hits over 6 1/3 shutout innings. It's Turner's first victory since July 10th. He'll try and make it two in a row next time out against the Braves.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF5/24/2014 11:06:00 AM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is hitless in seven at-bats against Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta.
Insight: Stanton is on fire, so keep him in the lineup anyway, just don't get your hopes too high. He smoke two monster home runs on Friday night totaling around 900 ft. He's batting .314 with 14 HR, 47 RBI and a 1.020 OPS through his first 49 games.
Garrett Jones, 1BHot5/23/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Miami first baseman Garrett Jones went deep twice in Friday's loss to the Brewers.
Insight: Both homers were solo shots. Jones has driven in ten runs over his last eight appearances. During that span, his batting average has improved by nearly 40 points (.248 to .286).
Giancarlo Stanton, RF5/23/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton belted two homers Friday in a loss to Milwaukee.
Insight: He killed both of them as each homer traveled at least 440 feet. Stanton is currently on pace for 155 RBI. That would be the most we've seen since Alex Rodriguez drove in 156 runs back in 2007.
Henderson Alvarez, SP5/22/2014 10:17:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez was terrific in Thursday's no-decision against the Phillies.
Insight: Alvarez scattered four hits over seven shutout innings. His ERA is down to a miniscule 3.21. That's a noticeable improvement from the 3.59 ERA he posted in 102 2/3 innings last season. Alvarez will make his next start Tuesday against Washington.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C5/22/2014 10:59:00 AM
Description: Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is not in Thursday's starting lineup
Insight: Saltalamacchia rolled an ankle running the bases on Wednesday, but was probably in line for the day off anyway with the early afternoon start.
Garrett Jones, 1B5/22/2014 10:56:00 AM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones will get Thursday off as the Marlins face a tough left-hander in Cole Hamels.
Insight: Jones is hot with six hits in the past two games to raise his average to .280 with a solid .828 OPS.
Christian Yelich, LF5/21/2014 11:00:00 PM
Description: Miami outfielder Christian Yelich went 3-for-6 with a triple, two RBI and a run Wednesday against the Phillies.
Insight: Yelich hasn't had a good month (.216), but he's managed to score 17 runs anyway. On the year, he's hitting .261 with five homers, 17 RBI, 34 runs, seven steals and a .762 OPS, so he has solid fantasy value in all formats.
Marcell Ozuna, RF 5/21/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna had a huge night at the plate Wednesday against the Phillies.
Insight: Ozuna came in 8-for-57 (.140) with 22 Ks in May but went 2-for-4 with a homer and five RBI Wednesday. He has seven blasts and 28 RBI this season.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF5/21/2014 1:40:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hasn't quite mastered the art of hitting Kyle Kendrick.
Insight: The Phillies right-hander has limited Stanton to a .143 batting average in 21 lifetime at bats. Stanton (.312, 12 HR, 43 RBI) has punched out in eight of those at bats.
Andrew Heaney, SP5/20/2014 5:03:00 PM
Description: Marlins pitching prospect Andrew Heaney has been promoted to Triple-A New Orleans.
Insight: Miami's No. 1 prospect had a 1.60 ERA in 95 1/3 innings in the minors last season and went 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA and a 52/13 K/BB over 53 2/3 innings with Double-A Jacksonville this season. His stay at Triple-A shouldn't last longer than a few weeks before he's promoted to the majors.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C5/20/2014 10:35:00 AM
Description: Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia apparently doesn't see the ball well against Phillies starter A.J. Burnett as he's just 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts in their matchups.
Insight: Saltalamacchia isn't one of the big name catchers, but he's batting a respectable .268 with six homers, 13 RBI and a .823 OPS.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot5/18/2014 1:58:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is getting a well-earned day off Sunday, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
Insight: Stanton is tied for the NL lead with 12 homers and is by himself at the top of the NL leaderboard with 43 RBI this season. He should be back in the lineup Tuesday against the Phillies.
Andrew Heaney, SP5/18/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Marlins pitching prospect Andrew Heaney has a 2.35 ERA and a 52/13 K/BB in 53 2/3 innings with Double-A Jacksonville this season.
Insight: Miami's No. 1 prospect had a 1.60 ERA in 95 1/3 innings in the minors last season and may get the call up to the majors straight from Double-A. The Marlins have shown they have no issue having pitching prospects skip the top level of the minor leagues; Jose Fernandez went to the majors right from High-A last season and just last week Miami called up Anthony DeSclafani from Double-A to replace Fernandez (elbow) in the rotation.
Tom Koehler, SPHot5/18/2014 9:44:00 AM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler followed up his worst start of the year with seven scoreless innings Saturday at San Francisco.
Insight: Koehler allowed six hits, five walks and four runs in 3 2/3 innings his last time out, but he had a 7/2 K/BB and gave up four hits Saturday to improve to 4-3 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Koehler's fielding-independent numbers aren't very good so his FIP is 4.13, which suggests some regression is coming.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot5/17/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton crushed his 12th homer of the season Saturday night at San Francisco. He's batting .320 with a 1.023 OPS, 43 RBI, 29 runs and four steals this season.
Insight: Miami's offense has been much better in 2014 than it was last season, but Stanton still isn't seeing many pitches to hit. Instead, he's improved his plate coverage and has been taking the ball the other way more frequently. Last year, seven of his 24 homers went to the opposite field. This season, he's pulled just five of his 12 home runs.
Marcell Ozuna, RFCold5/16/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is not in the lineup Friday night.
Insight: Ozuna has gone 7-for-47 (.149) with 17 strikeouts in the month of May after hitting .310 in April. He'll get a second straight day off while Reed Johnson starts in left field.
Jose Fernandez, SP5/15/2014 2:25:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Jose Fernandez will have Tommy John surgery on Friday. SOURCE: CBS Sports
Insight: The right-hander's MRI revealed a torn UCL in his right elbow. Fernandez (4-2, 2.44 ERA) is likely to be out until midway through the 2015 season.
Randy Wolf, SP5/14/2014 4:01:00 PM
Description: The Marlins have agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with left-hander Randy Wolf. SOURCE: Jayson Stark, ESPN
Insight: The team needed an extra arm with Jose Fernandez out for the season (torn UCL). Wolf was cut by the Mariners in spring training. At age 37 and coming off Tommy John surgery, he probably isn't your best fantasy option.
Jose Fernandez, SP5/13/2014 8:32:00 PM
Description: Dr. Neal ElAttrache has recommended Tommy John surgery for Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez. SOURCE: CBS Sports
Insight: The right-hander's MRI revealed a torn UCL in his right elbow. Fernandez (4-2, 2.44 ERA) is likely to be out until midway through the 2015 season.
Garrett Jones, 1B5/13/2014 11:08:00 AM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones is 5-for-6 (.833) with four extra base hits and a 2.667 OPS versus Dodgers right-hander Josh Beckett.
Insight: Sure, its a tiny sample size, but he obviously sees the ball well out of Beckett's hand. Jones is batting .239 with five homers this season, though he has just one long ball in his last 12 games.

Insight: Our worst fears have been confirmed. We fully expect Fernandez to opt for season-ending Tommy John surgery. Fernandez had been 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA and 70 strikeouts before getting hurt.

Description: Miami has placed right-hander Jose Fernandez on the 15-day DL with a sprained elbow. SOURCE: Marlins on Twitter
Insight: It's horrible news for fantasy owners and potentially even worse news for the Marlins. We won't know for sure until Fernandez (4-2, 2.44 ERA) gets his MRI results back but we've been down this road before and it usually ends with Tommy John surgery. Fantasy owners should prepare to be without Fernandez for a long time.
Garrett Jones, 1BCold5/8/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones has batted .417 (5-for-12) with a double and a homer against Padres starter Ian Kennedy.
Insight: Jones has gone 1-for-16 in his last four starts, but his matchup with Kennedy on Thursday could be fruitful. Jones has picked up all 11 of his extra-base hits (6 2B, 5 HR) and 26 of his 30 hits in his 91 at-bats (.286) against right-handers this season.
Tom Koehler, SPHot5/7/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler was dominant again Wednesday against the Mets, tossing eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball.
Insight: In 45 innings, Koehler has a 1.99 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. The right-hander has struck out just 5.76 batters per nine innings and walked 3.38, however, and has largely benefited from a .195 BABIP.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot5/6/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton was on base all four times he went to the plate Tuesday against the Mets.
Insight: Stanton went 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. He missed a homer to dead center field in the first inning by about a foot and settled for a double. The 24-year-old has a .295 average, an NL-leading 10 homers and a major-league leading 38 RBI in 129 at-bats this season. Stanton only drove in 62 runs in 425 at-bats all of last season, but Miami's offense has been much better in 2014.
Henderson Alvarez, SPHot5/6/2014 9:32:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez threw his second shutout of the season Tuesday against the Mets. He allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked none in the 3-0 win.
Insight: Alvarez (2-2, 2.62 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) has thrown shutouts in two of his last four starts. The right-hander has allowed 47 hits in 44 2/3 innings, but he's given up just three homers and walked 11 batters.
Giancarlo Stanton, RF5/4/2014 4:24:00 PM
Description: Because one home run wasn't enough for Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, he went deep twice Sunday in a walkoff victory over Los Angeles.
Insight: It's his second multi-home run game of the season and the 11th of his career. Stanton leads the majors in RBI (36) and is second to Jose Abreu in home runs (ten). Don't be surprised if pitchers start giving him the Barry Bonds treatment. Stanton is already on pace to set a new career-high in walks with 78.
Tom Koehler, SP5/3/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Miami right-hander Tom Koehler was lights out Friday in a win against Los Angeles.
Insight: He held the Dodgers scoreless, allowing just three hits and two walks over seven innings. Koehler (3-2, 2.41 ERA) probably could have gone another inning or two but the team played it safe by taking him out after 91 pitches. His next start is Wednesday against New York.
Marcell Ozuna, RFHot4/30/2014 10:02:00 PM
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is hitting .310 with four homers, 16 RBI, 15 runs and an .844 OPS in 100 at-bats this season.
Insight: Ozuna homered and drove in three runs Wednesday against the Braves. His average probably won't stay where it is due to his 19.1 percent strikeout rate but he's walking more than he did as a rookie and has good pop.
Nathan Eovaldi, SPHot4/30/2014 10:01:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi had another dominant start Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing just three hits and one earned run in seven innings.
Insight: Eovaldi is 2-1 with a 2.58 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and a fantastic 35/5 K/BB in 38 1/3 innings. He walked 3.39 batters per nine innings last year but has taken a big step forward.
Giancarlo Stanton, RFHot4/29/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit his eighth homer of the season Tuesday against the Braves and now has 31 RBI.
Insight: Stanton hit just .236 with six home runs in 216 at-bats the past three Aprils combined but he's having a terrific first month in 2014 and could threaten the 50-homer mark if he can stay healthy for 140+ games for the first time since 2011.
Jose Fernandez, SPHot4/29/2014 9:28:00 PM
Description: Marlins starter Jose Fernandez extended his streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 23 with eight scoreless frames Tuesday against the Braves.
Insight: Fernandez faced Atlanta in two straight starts and allowed zero runs on five hits with a 22/2 K/BB in 16 innings. He's 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP and a 55/8 K/BB in 39 2/3 innings this season.
Garrett Jones, 1B4/29/2014 3:25:00 PM
Description: Marlins first baseman Garrett Jones is not in Tuesday's starting lineup. Jeff Baker will get the at-bats.
Insight: Jones has knocked four at of the park this season, but is batting just .237 through the first 24 games. It's been since 2009 that be posted a batting average above .275.
Ed Lucas, 3B4/29/2014 3:23:00 PM
Description: Miami third baseman Ed Lucas (broken hand), has been activated and will start at 2B on Tuesday night.
Insight: Lucas (.256, 4 HR, 28 RBI last season) will be making his season debut.
