Insight: Morse came into the game with two hits in his last 17 at-bats. The 32-year-old is hitting .302 with a .920 OPS through 53 at-bats.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/19/2014 10:55:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a career .545 hitter against Padres left-hander Eric Stults.

Description: San Francisco left fielder Mike Morse will be given the night off Friday against San Diego. SOURCE: Henry Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: It's his first absence of the year. Defensive whiz Gregor Blanco (.125, 0 HR, 1 RBI) will be given the start in left field.
Buster Posey, C4/18/2014 7:38:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey will take a seat Friday against the Padres.

Brandon Crawford, SS4/17/2014 9:45:00 AM
Description: San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford didn't start in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers and probably shouldn't be in Thursday's lineup based on an unfavorable matchup.
Insight: He's been dealing with a tight hamstring. He's also hitless in 10 at-bats versus Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Joaquin Arias will likely fill in at shortstop, but has shown little value with a bat in his hand.
Brandon Crawford, SS4/16/2014 8:42:00 PM
Description: San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford won't participate in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He's out with a tight hamstring. Joaquin Arias (.167, 0 HR, 1 RBI) will fill in at shortstop. It's only his sixth start of the season.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/16/2014 11:21:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is the owner of a .375 average against Dodgers starter Paul Maholm.
Insight: Sandoval is 6-for-16 with two homers and a double against Maholm. The third baseman has batted .164 with two homers in 55 at-bats this season, but he's also shown more plate discipline (12.7 BB%). The low average is mainly the result of a .171 BABIP, which he's posted despite having a 25.6 percent line-drive rate.
Hunter Pence, RF4/16/2014 11:20:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence has recorded 16 hits (5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR) in 52 at-bats (.308) against Paul Maholm of the Dodgers.
Insight: Pence had three hits Tuesday to raise his average to .193. The 31-year-old had his first 20-20 season in 2013.
Tim Lincecum, SP4/16/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum has walked just one batter and struck out 17 in 15 innings this season, but he has a 7.20 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.
Insight: Lincecum might want to think about throwing more pitches out of the strike zone, however, as batters have crushed his offerings in the zone. Lincecum has a 33.3 percent line-drive rate and a 3.00 HR/9 so far, and batters have made contact on 88.2 percent of swings on pitches in the strike zone.
Brandon Belt, 1BHot4/12/2014 3:13:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt will sit Saturday with Buster Posey getting the nod at 1B.
Insight: Belt has been so hot, fantasy owners will hate to see him out of the lineup. He's batting .292 with a league-leading five homers.
Buster Posey, CHot4/12/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey will start at first base on Saturday afternoon with Brandon Belt getting a day of rest.
Insight: Posey was involved in a collision with Paul Goldschmidt on Thursday and might be sore from the incident so has not caught the last two games He's batting .351 with three homers and seven RBI in his first 37 at-bats.
Buster Posey, CHot4/12/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey does not appear to be in the starting lineup on Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Friday night was a scheduled night off, so we're not sure about a second day. Posey was involved in a collision with Paul Goldschmidt on Thursday and might be sore from the incident. He's batting .351 with three homers and seven RBI in his first 37 at-bats.
Buster Posey, CHot4/11/2014 6:52:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is not in the starting lineup Friday, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Hector Sanchez will catch Madison Bumgarner while Posey takes the night off. He's batting .351 with three homers and seven RBI in his first 37 at-bats.
Angel Pagan, CFHot4/11/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Giants CF Angel Pagan is getting the night off Friday, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Pagan is off to a torrid start, hitting .442 with one homer, eight RBI, seven runs and two steals.
Tim Hudson, SPHot4/8/2014 8:12:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Hudson improved to 2-0 with eight strong innings Tuesday against Arizona.
Insight: Hudson has thrown 15 2/3 innings over his first two starts and allowed just 10 hits and three runs (two earned) while posting an 11/0 K/BB.
Angel Pagan, CFHot4/8/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Giants CF Angel Pagan had his sixth multi-hit game of the season Tuesday against Arizona.
Insight: Pagan has picked up at least one hit in all eight games, scored six runs and driven in eight.
Michael Morse, OFHot4/8/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Giants LF Michael Morse has hit safely in all eight games this season.
Insight: Morse went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI Tuesday against the Diamondbacks and is hitting .391 so far.
Brandon Belt, 1BHot4/8/2014 8:07:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt hit his fifth homer of the season Tuesday against the Diamondbacks in San Francisco's home opener.
Insight: Belt's first four homers came on the road, so it's good to see him hit one out of power-depressing AT&T Park Tuesday. Just 14 of his 38 career home runs have come at home.
Madison Bumgarner, SP4/5/2014 8:30:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner fanned 10 Dodgers in 6 1/3 innings Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Bumgarner only went four innings on Opening Day, though all four runs he gave up were unearned. The left-hander is still just 24 but he has thrown 200+ innings and fanned 191-199 batters in each of the last three seasons.
Michael Morse, OF4/5/2014 8:17:00 PM
Description: Michael Morse blasted his first homer as a member of the Giants Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Injuries derailed Morse's 2013 season and he batted only .226 with 13 homers in 88 games for the Mariners and Orioles. Morse batted .296 and hit 64 longballs in 346 games with the Nationals from 2010-12.
Buster Posey, C4/5/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey has started off 8-for-21 (.381) with two homers and four RBI.
Insight: Posey hit 24 homers in 148 games when he won the NL MVP in 2012, but he fell to 15 bombs in the same number of games last season. Fantasy owners drafted him for production closer to 2012 this year.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/5/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval hit his first homer of the season Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Sandoval has gone 4-for-23 (.174) in his first six games, though he's drawn five walks already. The 27-year-old has never been known for his plate discipline and pitchers know that. Sandoval saw the lowest percentage of pitches in the strike zone of any qualified hitter in the majors last season, and it wasn't even close (33.9 percent for Sandoval, 38.2 percent for Giancarlo Stanton in second place).
Brandon Crawford, SS4/4/2014 9:38:00 AM
Description: Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is hitless in 10 at-bats against Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: Crawford is batting .308 through the first four games, but has an unfavorable matchup. Over the past two seasons he's produced below a fantasy-worthy level and should not be on rosters.
Buster Posey, C4/3/2014 1:23:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is will get the afternoon off on Thursday.
Insight: Normal day game after a night game for the All-Star catcher. he's started well, batting .417 through his first three games. Always a must start when in the lineup.
Brandon Belt, 1BHot4/2/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt has gone 5-for-9 with two homers and four RBI in his first two games.
Insight: After putting up strong numbers in the minors, the 25-year-old Belt broke through with a .289 average, 17 home runs, 67 RBI, 76 runs and an .841 OPS last year and could take his game to the next level this season.
Tim Lincecum, SP4/2/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum could be scratched from Thursday's start due to food poisoning, according to Kate Scott of KNBR 680.
Insight: Lincecum is also recovering from a bruised knee after he was hit by a comebacker last Friday. The 29-year-old went can still miss bats but he also walks a lot of batters and has been hit hard the last two years. He went 20-29 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, a 383/166 K/BB and a 1.03 HR/9 over 383 2/3 innings in 2012-13.
Hunter Pence, RF4/1/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence has struck out in half his at-bats versus Arizona left-hander Wade Miley.
Insight: He's 2-for-12 (both singles) with six strikeouts against Miley. He went 0-for-4 in the opener and should probably be avoided on Tuesday night.
Buster Posey, C4/1/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is a .533 hitter (8-for-15) against Arizona left-hander Wade Miley.
Insight: Posey homered in the season opener giving fantasy owners hope that he'll bounce back from a mediocre-for-him 2013 season (.294, 15 HR, 72 RBI, .821 OPS).
Hunter Pence, RF3/31/2014 2:30:00 PM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence has been terrific against Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: He has a hit in seven of his 13 career at bats against the right-hander. Expect Pence to have another big game in Monday night's season opener.
Tim Lincecum, SP3/30/2014 11:19:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right-hander Tim Lincecum expects to make his scheduled start Thursday versus Arizona. SOURCE: San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Lincecum was struck in the knee by a line drive on Friday but appears to be okay. Though Lincecum isn't as overpowering as he was early in his career, the 29-year-old still eats plenty of innings (197 2/3 IP last season).
Tim Lincecum, SP3/29/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum got drilled by a line drive on Friday night. Luckily, X-rays on his knee came back negative. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: It's just a bruise. Lincecum is probably a little sore but we wouldn't expect him to miss much time. He's slated to open the year as San Francisco's No. 4 starter behind Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain and Tim Hudson.
Hunter Pence, RF3/27/2014 8:41:00 PM
Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated that right fielder Hunter Pence will hit second while Marco Scutaro (back) is on the disabled list, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Pence mostly hit fifth last season and also saw 46 games in the cleanup spot. He had his best all-around season, hitting .283 with career highs in homers (27) and steals (22), 99 RBI and 91 runs. He has batted .362 with five home runs this spring.
Jeremy Affeldt, RP3/26/2014 8:46:00 PM
Description: Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt has been diagnosed with a strained MCL. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: He's going to be out of commission for at least the next 10-to-14 days. As a setup man, Affeldt's fantasy impact is minimal.
Buster Posey, C3/26/2014 4:01:00 PM
Description: According to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com, Giants catcher Buster Posey was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to minor hamstring tightness.
Insight: The Giants stressed that the injury is "really, really, really minor." Posey hit .294 with 15 homers, 72 RBI and an .821 OPS in 148 games last year, but fantasy owners who invest a top-50 pick need to get more out of him.
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/25/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) had a nerve procedure done on Tuesday and will begin the season on the DL, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Scutaro has been struggling with back pain all spring. It's not a huge loss for fantasy owners, as Scutaro totaled just two homers and 31 RBI last season. The Giants' backup at second base is Joaquin Arias.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B3/25/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval sustained a gash on the palm of his right hand while diving and will miss Wednesday's game, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Sandoval should be OK by Opening Day on March 31. The 27-year-old is coming off a 2013 season in which he hit .278 with 14 homers, 79 RBI and a .758 OPS. Fantasy owners should pay for that production and hope he puts up something closer to the .315 average, 23 home runs and .909 OPS he had in 2011.
Ryan Vogelsong, SPCold3/23/2014 1:58:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong has served up five home runs in 15 innings this spring.
Insight: That's an alarming number for anyone, much less a 36-year-old who was entirely too hittable last season (124 hits, 15 homers, 5.73 ERA in 103 2/3 innings). Vogelsong had a 2.57 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and a 0.71 HR/9 over his first 315 2/3 innings following his return to the majors after a four-year absence, but he has put up a 6.03 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP and a 1.32 HR/9 his last 150 1/3.
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/20/2014 8:37:00 PM
Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro was given an epidermal injection on Thursday. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Scutaro has been struggling with back pain all spring and may have to begin the season on the disabled list. It wouldn't be a huge loss for fantasy owners as Scutaro totaled just two homers and 31 RBI last season. The Giants' backup at second base is Tony Abreu (.268, 2 HR, 14 RBI in 2013).
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/17/2014 5:12:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) made his Cactus League debut on Monday and went 1-for-2 with a double, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Scutaro has been sidelined by a back injury. He gutted out 127 games last season despite dealing with several injuries and hit .297, but he had just two homers, 31 RBI, 57 runs, two steals and a .726 OPS.
Matt Cain, SPHot3/14/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Matt Cain has made two starts this spring, pitching eight innings and yielding just one hit and striking out nine batters.
Insight: Could this be the return of the Giants ace? After going 8-10 last season with a 4.00 ERA and 1.16 WHIP this spring's ealy work is indicating a big season. We hope so. Keep watching and if this trend continues he could be a bargain on Draft Day.
Michael Morse, OF3/13/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants outfielder Michael Morse will miss four-to-five days with a calf strain.
Insight: The injury has been lingering for Morse, so he'll sit out in hopes that it will go away completely. The slugger played just 88 games last season (76 with Seattle, 12 with Baltimore) due to injuries and hit .215 with 13 home runs and a .651 OPS. However, he batted .296/.345/.516 with 64 homers and 198 RBI in 346 games with the Nationals from 2010-12.
Angel Pagan, CF3/13/2014 8:48:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (lower back strain) could be back in a couple days.
Insight: Pagan's injury apparently isn't serious. He is coming off a season in which he played just 71 games due to a torn hamstring. He hit .282 with five homers, 44 runs and nine steals, one year after producing a .288 average, eight homers, 56 RBI, 95 runs and 29 steals in 154 games.
Angel Pagan, CF3/13/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is dealing with a lower back strain.
Insight: Pagan is coming off a season in which he played just 71 games due to a torn hamstring. He hit .282 with five homers, 44 runs and nine steals, one year after producing a .288 average, eight homers, 56 RBI, 95 runs and 29 steals in 154 games. He's awaiting further test results to determine how long he'll be out.
Michael Morse, OF3/13/2014 6:17:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants outfielder Michael Morse will miss a couple of days with a mild calf strain.
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/2/2014 5:04:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) has yet to swing a bat this spring, according to csnbayarea.com.
Insight: Scutaro began taking grounders a few days ago. The Giants planned for the 38-year-old infielder to work on strengthening his back, abdominals and hips over the first two weeks of spring training. Scutaro gutted out 127 games last season despite dealing with several injuries and hit .297, but he had just two homers, 31 RBI, 57 runs, two steals and a .726 OPS.
Madison Bumgarner, SP2/25/2014 3:49:00 PM
Description: Madison Bumgarner will be San Francisco's Opening Day starter, according to manager Bruce Bochy.
Insight: This isn't a huge surprise. He was San Francisco's best pitcher last season, going 13-9 with a 2.77 ERA and 199 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings. Even Matt Cain acknowledged that he should get the honor.
Tyler Colvin, RF2/22/2014 7:10:00 PM
Description: The Giants have agreed to a minor league deal with outfielder Tyler Colvin. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area News Group
Insight: Colvin signed with the Orioles in January but the team pulled out of the deal due to concerns about his back. Baltimore did the same thing after signing Grant Balfour. Both players found another team who thought they were healthy enough to sign, as Balfour inked a deal with Tampa Bay and Colvin with San Francisco. If Colvin makes the team, he will serve as a fifth outfielder and won't have fantasy value.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B1/14/2014 6:28:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval said he has dropped 42 pounds this winter, according to Rafael Rojas of MLB.com.
Insight: Sandoval is in search of a new contract, and GM Brian Sabean said in December the team would be willing to explore an extension with Sandoval provided he shows up to camp in good shape. The Giants third baseman dropped a ton of weight prior to the 2011 season and hit .315 with 23 homers, but he eventually regained everything he lost.
Dontrelle Willis, SP1/10/2014 3:26:00 PM
Description: Starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis and the Giants have reached an agreement on a minor league contract. SOURCE: Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: He still plays? Willis hasn't made more than 15 starts since 2007, which is also the last time he won more than two games in a season. Fantasy owners in need of a reliable arm should keep looking.
Michael Morse, OF12/16/2013 9:11:00 PM
Description: Michael Morse's new deal with San Francisco is worth $6 million. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: He signed a one-year contract last week. Injuries and poor play limited Morse to just 88 games last season (.215, 13 HR, 27 RBI). The 31-year-old is set to be the Giants' Opening Day left fielder.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP11/29/2013 4:31:00 PM
Description: The Giants have re-signed starter Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year deal. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: The contract details haven't been released yet but it's likely he'll be getting less than the $5 million he made last season. Vogelsong (4-6, 5.73 ERA) will join Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Tim Hudson and Madison Bumgarner in the Giants' starting rotation.
Tim Hudson, SP11/18/2013 9:10:00 PM
Description: Tim Hudson became the newest member of the San Francisco Giants on Monday. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: The deal is worth $23 million over two seasons. Hudson had his 2013 campaign cut short because of a broken ankle. He should be ready for spring training in a few months.
Buster Posey, C11/18/2013 1:45:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey will not become a full-time first baseman, according to Giants general manager Brian Sabean.
Insight: Posey's fantasy value as a first baseman wouldn't be anywhere near what it is as a catcher. He batted .294 with 15 HR and 72 RBI last season which is very good for a guy behind the plate, but a dime-a-dozen option at first base.
Barry Zito, SP11/2/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: The Giants have declined lefthander Barry Zito's option for next season. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: Zito's tenure in San Francisco will end with a $7 million buyout. He would have made $18 million had the Giants extended him for another year. Zito starred for the Giants during their title run in 2012 (2-0, 1.69 ERA in the playoffs) but wasn't able to keep his rotation spot in 2013.
Tim Lincecum, SP10/22/2013 8:50:00 PM
Description: The Giants have re-signed Tim Lincecum to a two-year deal.
Insight: He'll get $35 million and a full no-trade clause. Lincecum has gone 20-29 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 383 2/3 innings over the last two seasons after going 62-36 with a 2.81 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and two Cy Young Awards from 2008-11. However, he still struck out 190-plus batters in the last two years and lowered his ERA 81 points from 2012 to 2013.
Tim Lincecum, SP10/19/2013 10:34:00 AM
Description: The Giants aren't expected to re-sign starter Tim Lincecum before he becomes a free agent. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: The Giants are only offering him a two-year deal and Lincecum thinks he may be able to get more than that on the open market. If San Francisco submits a qualifying offer to Lincecum, whatever team signs him will have to surrender a draft pick. Aside from a no-hitter in mid-July, Lincecum didn't have an impressive season (10-14, 4.37 ERA in 32 starts).
Tim Lincecum, SP9/28/2013 8:17:00 PM
Description: Now that Hunter Pence has been taken care of, the Giants will turn their attention to re-signing Tim Lincecum. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: They're hoping to sign the two-time Cy Young winner to a multi-year deal. Lincecum wasn't great this year (10-14, 4.37 ERA) but he pitched better than he did last season (10-15, 5.18). Obviously, Lincecum is headed for a big pay cut after making over $22 million in salary this season.
Hunter Pence, RFHot9/28/2013 1:43:00 PM
Description: The Giants have signed right fielder Hunter Pence to a five-year, $90 million contract.
Insight: Pence has hit .282 with 26 homers, 94 RBI, 90 runs and 22 steals while playing in every game this season. The outfielder will be with San Francisco until he's 35.
Buster Posey, C9/28/2013 1:36:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey is getting Saturday off.
Insight: Posey will likely return to the lineup for the season finale Sunday, but fantasy owners will have to make do without him Saturday.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B9/28/2013 10:49:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has absolutely crushed Padres starter Eric Stults, going 10-for-19 (.526) with two doubles and a triple against the left-hander.
Insight: Sandoval has hit .274 with 14 homers, 77 RBI, 52 runs and a .750 OPS this season, but a matchup with Stults Saturday should help him add to those numbers a bit.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B9/27/2013 6:35:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is in the lineup Friday after missing Thursday's game due to flu-like symptoms.
Insight: Sandoval has hit .276 with 14 homers, 77 RBI, 51 runs and a .753 OPS this season. He's batted under .285 and hit fewer than 15 homers in three of the last four seasons.
Brandon Belt, 1BHot9/26/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt is 7-for-15 (.467) with one home run against Edinson Volquez of the Dodgers.
Insight: Belt has hit .343 with six homers, 23 RBI, 32 runs and a .952 OPS since Aug. 2. Get him in the lineup Thursday.
Hunter Pence, RFHot9/25/2013 11:25:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is 10-for-31 with four home runs against Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Pence has been hot over the past two months batting .306 in August and .305 in September with a 1.079 OPS. Start him.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B9/25/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a career .467 hitter against Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco with a pair of homers and a 1.663 OPS.
Insight: Its a second consecutive "down" year for Sandoval with a .273 batting average and just 13 homers. Fantasy owners don't like this trend, but Wednesday is a favorable matchup.
Madison Bumgarner, SP9/24/2013 8:44:00 PM
Description: Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner will not make another start this season.
Insight: The Giants are eliminated from contention and don't want to risk the 24-year-old throwing any more innings this season. He has been San Francisco's ace, going 13-9 with a 2.77 ERA and 199 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings. Pablo Sandoval, 3B9/4/2013 11:43:00 AM

Insight: Pagan had surgery to repair a torn right hamstring in late June and returned to the lineup Friday night. Fantasy owners should also expect Pagan to take it easy on the basepaths, which will seriously limit his fantasy value.
Angel Pagan, CF8/30/2013 6:34:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan (hamstring) has been activated from the DL and is leading off Friday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Pagan had surgery to repair a torn right hamstring in late June. He hasn't played a game since May 25 and likely will take it easy on the basepaths to protect his hamstring, which will limit his fantasy value.

Insight: Scutaro is a career .318 hitter versus Boston left-hander Jon Lester. He's batting .303 this season, but with little power (2 HR) and no speed (1 SB) to speak of.
Hunter Pence, RFHot8/18/2013 5:51:00 PM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI Sunday against the Marlins.
Insight: Pence is 15-for-42 (.357) with four doubles, one triple, a homer and 13 RBI over his last 10 games and has produced a .282 average, 15 homers, 64 RBI, 65 runs and 18 steals this year. Pence only stole 13 bases in the previous two seasons combined after swiping a career-high 18 in 2010.

Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey won't be on the field Sunday against Miami.
Insight: Posey (.304, 14 HR, 61 RBI) didn't play on Friday night either. Manager Bruce Bochy hinted that he'd be giving Posey a rest earlier in the week, so at least fantasy owners had a few days to prepare for this. Once again, Hector Sanchez will make the start at catcher for the Giants.
Marco Scutaro, 2B8/17/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro aggravated his back injury Saturday in a win against Miami. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area

Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey could sit out Sunday's game in addition to Friday, according to SFGate.com.
Insight: San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said that in deciding when to rest Posey, he looks nots only at how many games he caught, but how many pitches, and Posey has caught a lot of pitches this season. "We’ve played some long games," Bochy said. "The first six weeks the pitching struggled a little bit and we had some long games there. It’s a different game when you catch 125 or 130 pitches than 200 pitches. It takes a toll on you. It’s not the same type of game."

Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is 10-for-24 (.417) with two doubles and five RBI over his last six games, but he owns a .071 (1-for-14) average against Nationals starter Dan Haren.
Insight: Earlier this season, we would have suggested you roll with Pence against the dreadful Haren, but the Washington right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA over his last three starts and has never had a problem sending Pence back to the dugout.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold8/15/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-4 Wednesday after starting out 5-for-43 in August, and he has strong numbers against Thursday's starter Dan Haren of the Nationals.
Insight: Sandoval, who has just one homer in 48 games since the start of June, is 5-for-13 with a double and a triple against Haren. With a .261 average and a .694 OPS, Sandoval has been largely disappointing this season, but he should be active Thursday for fantasy owners.

Insight: Lincecum limited Milwaukee to one hit over eight scoreless innings in his last outing. He was also bombed July 22 in the start following his no-hitter. The right-hander remains a frustrating fantasy option.

Description: Giants starter Chad Gaudin allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out six over five innings Saturday against the Orioles.
Insight: Gaudin started the season in the bullpen and posted a 2.05 ERA in 18 appearances; he has been just as effective in 11 starts, going 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 55/22 K/BB in 62 1/3 innings. It's the best Gaudin has pitched in his entire career, which has spanned 11 years and nine teams.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP8/9/2013 7:32:00 PM
Description: The Giants have activated righthander Ryan Vogelsong from the 60-day DL.
Insight: It took a little over two months for his broken hand to heal. Vogelsong was excellent during the Giants' run to the World Series last season (14-9, 3.37 ERA) but he hasn't been as sharp so far in 2013 (2-4, 7.19 in nine starts).
Tim Lincecum, SP8/8/2013 9:39:00 PM

Brandon Belt, 1B8/8/2013 9:32:00 PM

Description: Updating a previous report, Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong will indeed be activated from the disabled list on Friday. SOURCE: John Shea, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: There was some discussion about Vogelsong needing another rehab start but apparently that's not the case. A broken hand caused Vogelsong to miss a little over two months. Guillermo Moscoso will head back to the bullpen when Vogelsong is activated.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP8/4/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: The Giants were hoping Ryan Vogelsong would start Friday versus Baltimore but now it looks like he's going to need at least one more rehab start. SOURCE: Chris Haft, MLB.com

Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro is 12-for-26 (.462) against Tampa Bay right-hander Roberto Hernandez.

Barry Zito, SPCold8/2/2013 7:13:00 PM
Description: Barry Zito has indeed lost his spot in the starting rotation. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Bay Area
Insight: It was bound to happen. Zito hasn't been pitching well and the Giants needed to make room for Ryan Vogelsong, who is set to come off the DL sometime in the next week. Zito was supposed to start Sunday against the Rays but now righthander Guillermo Moscoso will make the start instead.
Matt Cain, SP8/1/2013 9:52:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain fired eight innings, struck out seven and allowed one run on six hits Thursday night at Philadelphia, and his team got him two runs in the top of the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win for the right-hander.
Insight: After getting nine days off between starts due to the All-Star break, Cain has come out and thrown 20 innings with a 1.80 ERA in three starts. He's still just 7-6 with a 4.57 ERA, however, due to struggles from the stretch. He has allowed eight homers with men on base this season and he had a 27.9 percent line-drive rate and a .318 BABIP with RISP prior to Thursday's start. It doesn't help that he has walked 0.91 more batters per nine innings than last year either.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B8/1/2013 6:17:00 PM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval is back in the starting lineup Thursday after leaving Wednesday's game with a bruised heel.
Insight: Sandoval hit .400 with four doubles, eight RBI and a 5/3 K/BB in his final seven games of July after hitting .186 (16-for-86) from June 25 to July 23.
Marco Scutaro, 2BHot8/1/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro could struggle Thursday versus Cole Hamels.
Insight: We'd actually be a little surprised if he didn't. Scutaro is hitting just .150 against Hamels for his career. He's hitting .455 during his current six-game hitting streak.
Buster Posey, C8/1/2013 11:50:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey has been a monster against Phillies lefty Cole Hamels.
Insight: They've only faced off seven times but five of those at bats have ended in hits for Posey. The 2012 National League MVP went 2-for-5 Wednesday after missing Tuesday's game with an illness.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/31/2013 9:25:00 PM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval exited Wednesday's game against the Phillies because of a bruised heel. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Bay Area
Insight: Joaquin Arias replaced Sandoval in the top of the sixth inning. It doesn't sound like the injury is serious but we wouldn't be surprised if Sandoval gets the night off Thursday in the series finale.
Barry Zito, SPCold7/31/2013 7:35:00 PM
Description: San Francisco lefthander Barry Zito is in danger of losing his place in the starting rotation.
Insight: Manager Bruce Bochy wouldn't even commit to having Zito make his next start Sunday against the Rays. Even if Zito (4-8, 5.09 ERA) pitches Sunday, he'll almost certainly be pushed out of the rotation when Ryan Vogelsong returns from a broken hand sometime next week.
Buster Posey, CCold7/31/2013 3:16:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey is back in the lineup Wednesday after missing Tuesday's game due to an illness.
Insight: Posey is 0-for-18 over his last six games, so he probably could have used the day off Tuesday even if he wasn't sick.
Buster Posey, CCold7/30/2013 5:13:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey is out of the lineup Tuesday due to an illness.
Insight: Posey's bat also looks sick -- he's 0-for-18 over his last six games. Guillermo Quiroz will start in his place behind the plate Tuesday.
Jeff Francoeur, RF7/30/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Giants newly acquired outfielder Jeff Francoeur is just 7-for-35 since arriving in the Bay area, but has a favorable matchup on Tuesday.
Insight: The Giants' outfielder is a stunning 15-for-28 (.536) with a 1.438 OPS in his career matchups versus Phillies starter John Lannan.
Tim Lincecum, SP7/28/2013 9:36:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum struck out 10 batters and allowed two runs in seven innings Sunday versus the Cubs, but his team scored just one run.
Insight: It was a nice bounce-back effort after Lincecum followed up his no-hitter by giving up eight runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings Monday against the Reds. The right-hander can still miss bats -- he has 137 K in 127 innings this year -- but batters have hit him hard when making contact.
Sergio Romo, RPCold7/28/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Giants closer Sergio Romo allowed the game-winning homer Saturday against the Cubs.
Insight: Romo was charged with the loss for the second time in as many nights. He's already allowed four runs since the All-Star break though only two of them have been earned (4.15 ERA in 4 1/3 innings). The Giants are fading fast (1-6 in their last seven games) and Romo's struggles certainly won't help them get back in the NL West race.
Madison Bumgarner, SP7/28/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: San Francisco lefty Madison Bumgarner racked up seven strikeouts in eight innings of shutout work Saturday against Chicago.
Insight: Bumgarner has been in cruise control for the last month, collecting a 1.80 ERA in his last eight outings. He's gone at least seven innings in each of those appearances. Bumgarner has won five times in that span, though the Giants' stagnant offense has prevented him from winning his last two starts.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/26/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has a paltry .718 OPS and is hitting .269 with nine homers and 48 RBI this season, but he has had success in the past against Cubs starter Edwin Jackson.
Insight: Sandoval is 6-for-11 (.545) with one homer against Jackson and has gone 4-for-9 over his last two games. Make sure he's in your lineup Friday.
Buster Posey, CCold7/24/2013 7:31:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey is getting a night of rest Wednesday against Cincinnati.
Insight: He's 1-for-11 in his last four games, but everybody's entitled to a slump once in a while. Guillermo Quiroz (.203, 1 HR, 6 RBI) will start in Posey's place.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/24/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a stunning 7-for-10 with a pair of homers and a 2.227 OPS against Cincinnati right-hander Mike Leake.
Insight: Sandoval went 2-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored on Tuesday night and has an extremely favorable matchup. Start him.
Jeremy Affeldt, RP7/22/2013 6:44:00 PM
Description: A groin strain will sideline Giants lefty Jeremy Affeldt for the next 4-to-6 weeks. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sports Bay Area
Insight: Affeldt's absence will be felt, just not in fantasy. He hasn't recorded a save for the Giants since 2012.
Jeremy Affeldt, RP7/21/2013 10:37:00 AM
Description: It looks like San Francisco reliever Jeremy Affeldt is headed to the disabled list. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sports Bay Area
Insight: Affeldt strained his groin Saturday in a relief appearance against the Diamondbacks. He leads the team with 11 holds this season.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP7/19/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (hand) will throw live batting practice Saturday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Vogelsong confirmed he is targeting Aug. 9 as a tentative date for a return to the rotation. The right-hander suffered a fractured right hand when he was hit with a pitch while batting on May 20. He was awful before his injury, going 2-4 with a 7.19 ERA and a 5.78 FIP in his first nine starts.
Tim Lincecum, SP7/15/2013 9:51:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum is drawing trade interest from the Tigers. SOURCE: Jon Paul Morosi, Fox Sports
Insight: Detroit wants to convert Lincecum to a reliever, which probably won't sit well with the two-time Cy Young winner. Lincecum, who threw a no-hitter over the weekend, will become a free agent this winter. He's a longshot to return to the Giants next season.
Sergio Romo, RP7/14/2013 3:39:00 PM
Description: San Francisco closer Sergio Romo was invited to his first All-Star Game on Sunday.
Insight: Jordan Zimmermann and Jeff Locke are both injured, which opened up a spot for Romo on the NL roster. The righthander has converted 21 of 24 saves this year with a 2.86 ERA in 32 2/3 innings.
Brandon Belt, 1B7/14/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Since going 0-for-8 with five strikeouts on July 8 against the Mets, San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt has picked up six hits, including a double, a triple and a homer, in 17 at-bats over his last five games. He also has walked five times and scored five runs in that span.
Insight: Belt went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Saturday at San Diego and is hitting .261 with 10 homers, 38 RBI and a .787 OPS this season.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/14/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is heating up after an extended slump and has a favorable matchup ahead of him Sunday.
Insight: Sandoval went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs Saturday at San Diego and is 8-for-18 (.444) with four doubles, one home run, five RBI, four walks and four runs over his last five games. He batted just .085 (4-for-47) with 13 K from June 25 to July 8. Sandoval will face Eric Stults Sunday, who he has gone 9-for-15 (.600) against.
Buster Posey, CHot7/14/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is batting .500 with four doubles, one homer and eight RBI in his last 26 at-bats.
Insight: Posey went 3-for-4 with three runs and caught Tim Lincecum's no-hitter Saturday night at San Diego. The backstop has caught two no-hitters in the last 13 months.
Hunter Pence, RF7/14/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence snapped out of a major slump with a triple, a homer and five RBI Saturday at San Diego.
Insight: Pence hit .115 (7-for-61) with 12 strikeouts in his previous 15 games. He'll face Eric Stults Sunday, a pitcher he has gone 5-for-16 (.313) against with one home run.
Tim Lincecum, SP7/14/2013 9:23:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum shockingly threw his first career no-hitter Saturday at San Diego.
Insight: Lincecum carried a 4.61 ERA into the game and ended up striking out 13 batters and walking four in nine scoreless frames. He now has the sixth-most strikeouts in the National League. While this was a nice one-night surprise, Lincecum owners should use this as an opportunity to sell him -- while he does have a 3.34 FIP, his line-drive rate is 26.6 percent, second worst in baseball.
Hunter Pence, RFCold7/13/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence is just 4-for-28 against Padres starter Edinson Volquez and has struck out in half his official at-bats.
Insight: Pence has batted just .168 over the past four weeks to kill his All-Star team chances. This matchup doesn't figure to help him turn it around. Avoid.
Jeff Francoeur, RF7/12/2013 10:01:00 PM
Description: Jeff Francoeur could make his Giants debut on Saturday.
Insight: The Giants are expected to call him up from Triple-A Fresno before the game. After spending his first five seasons with the Braves, Francoeur has now played for five teams in his last five seasons.
Matt Cain, SPCold7/12/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: Matt Cain's struggles this season could be related to bone spurs in his right elbow. SOURCE: Henry Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Bone spurs can be an annoyance but it's not necessarily something that would land a pitcher on the disabled list. Manager Bruce Bochy has no plans to take Cain out of the rotation so it looks like he's going to pitch through it. ESPN's Curt Schilling thought Cain looked tired on Wednesday so maybe the All-Star break will give him a little time to regroup.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP7/11/2013 8:27:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (hand) threw a bullpen session Thursday, his first since suffering a fractured pinky on May 20, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Mercury News.
Insight: Vogelsong threw 30 fastballs in his bullpen and was happy with the session. "Hand is good, arm is good, he said. "Just got to get my timing back." Vogelsong is likely to throw a couple more bullpens before making one or two rehab starts. He's expected back by the end of July or beginning of August.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold7/11/2013 1:09:00 PM
Description: A matchup with Jason Marquis on Thursday might be just what San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval needs to break out of his month-long slump.
Insight: Sandoval is batting just .147 in July but he does own a .400 lifetime average versus Marquis. The struggling third baseman really needs a confidence booster before the All-Star break and this seems like a matchup he can take advantage of.
Hunter Pence, RFCold7/11/2013 1:05:00 PM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence seems to have mastered the art of hitting Jason Marquis. In 29 at bats, Pence carries a .414 batting average against the Padres righthander.
Insight: That's encouraging but it doesn't change the fact that Pence is hitting just .083 in the month of July. This slump probably hasn't helped his bid to win the final spot on the National League All-Star roster.
Matt Cain, SPCold7/10/2013 9:25:00 PM
Description: Giants beat writer Alex Pavlovic said he's heard there have been in-house discussions regarding the health of pitcher Matt Cain in recent days.
Insight: Cain (5-6, 5.06 ERA) lasted just 2/3 of an inning and allowed three earned runs Wednesday against the Mets, one start after giving up eight earned in 2 1/3. The right-hander had strung together some impressive outings before the last two, but he hasn't been right for the majority of the season. His 2.97 BB/9 is 0.88 higher than last season and his 1.29 HR/9 is a career high.
Matt Cain, SPCold7/10/2013 4:39:00 PM
Description: Giants pitcher Matt Cain followed up last Friday's career-worst outing with another clunker, going 2/3 of an inning and yielding three walks, two hits and three runs before being pulled after just 36 pitches.
Insight: Cain's record before Wednesday's start was a mediocre 5-5 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.14 WHIP after he gave up eight earned runs in 2 1/3 innings last Friday. This is not the pitcher fantasy owners paid top dollar for.
Kensuke Tanaka, 2B7/10/2013 1:57:00 PM
Description: Giants recently called up outfielder Kensuke Tanaka will get another start on Wednesday after going 1-for-4 in his major league debut Tuesday night.
Insight: Tanaka batted .330 with 43 runs scored and 20 steals for Triple-A Fresno, before being called up.
Marco Scutaro, 2B7/10/2013 1:43:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro is not in Wednesday's starting lineup.
Insight: Scutaro has been dealing with a back injury and before that a thumb problem. Still, he's been a solid fantasy option this season batting .316 with a .773 OPS.
Buster Posey, C7/9/2013 7:53:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey's absence Tuesday is not injury related.
Insight: Posey is getting the night off while Guillermo Quiroz handles catching duties. The 2012 NL MVP should return to the lineup Wednesday.
Hunter Pence, RFCold7/9/2013 10:01:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is 1-for-12 with three walks and four strikeouts versus Mets starter Dillon Gee.
Insight: Pence is in a horrific slump, batting .071 (3-for-42) over his past 11 games. This matchup isn't likely to help him break out of it. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Hunter Pence, RFCold7/7/2013 9:56:00 PM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence has gone 2-for-37 (.054) over his last 10 games.
Insight: Pence was hitting .292 prior to the start of this horrific slump, but he's down to .266 after going 0-for-4 Sunday against nemesis Clayton Kershaw.
Chad Gaudin, SP7/7/2013 9:39:00 PM
Description: In his first start since June 20, Giants right-hander Chad Gaudin struck out nine and gave up one run on four hits in seven innings Sunday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Gaudin took a line drive off his pitching arm in his last start was placed on the DL with a contusion. He began the season as a long reliever but has gone 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA in five starts since joining the rotation.
Brandon Belt, 1B7/7/2013 1:27:00 PM
Description: San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt has been downright awful against Los Angeles starter Clayton Kershaw (3-for-27 with 13 K's).
Insight: Noticing a trend here? Kershaw absolutely owns the Giants. He's 10-4 against them with a 1.33 ERA in 20 career games (19 starts). Good luck with that, Brandon.
Brandon Crawford, SSCold7/7/2013 1:23:00 PM
Description: Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford won't be able to help fantasy owners much Sunday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Crawford has only tacked on one hit against Clayton Kershaw in 14 career at bats. Crawford is already in the midst of a 1-for-18 slump so starting him Sunday against Kershaw would just be adding insult to injury.
Hunter Pence, RFCold7/7/2013 1:20:00 PM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence faces a bad matchup Sunday against Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Bad might be a bit of an understatement. Pence is 2-for-32 (.063 AVG) in his career against Kershaw. He's had a terrible month (0-for-18) and we don't expect Kershaw to do him any favors on Sunday.
Andres Torres, CF7/7/2013 1:17:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Andres Torres can't be trusted Sunday against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Torres has been horrible against Kershaw with 11 strikeouts in 31 at bats (.065 batting average). You'll leave him on your bench if you know what's good for you.
Madison Bumgarner, SPHot7/6/2013 10:31:00 PM
Description: Giants lefthander Madison Bumgarner grabbed his team-leading ninth win of the season Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Bumgarner (9-5, 3.05 ERA) only let up two runs in seven innings with both runs coming on a two-run homer by Tim Federowicz in the fifth inning. He's 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his last six starts.
Hunter Pence, RF7/5/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is 6-for-8 (.750) in his matchups against Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: Pence is batting .276 with 13 homers, 42 RBI, 47 runs, 13 steals and an .794 OPS over the first three months of the season, making him a good all-around fantasy contributor. We like him in today's matchup.
Marco Scutaro, 2BCold7/5/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro is questionable for Friday's game against the LA Dodgers due to a sore back.
Insight: Scutaro also missed games on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday due to the back injury. He's just 2-for-21 over the past six games, so it appears to be effecting his swing. He's been a solid fantasy option this season and despite the slump is still batting .312 with a .773 OPS.
Buster Posey, C7/4/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is getting a day off Thursday afternoon.
Insight: Posey caught nine innings Wednesday against the Reds and then moved to first base for the final two innings. He's 0-for-9 over his last three games.
Marco Scutaro, 2BCold7/4/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) is still out of the lineup Thursday.
Insight: Scutaro also missed games on Sunday and Wednesday due to back soreness.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/4/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a must-start Thursday with Mike Leake on the hill for the Reds.
Insight: Sandoval has gone 7-for-10 with two doubles and two homers against the Reds hurler. Make sure he's in your lineup, because he'll probably provide a Fourth of July fireworks display Thursday against Leake.
Marco Scutaro, 2BCold7/3/2013 4:27:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro is sitting out Wednesday due to lingering back soreness.
Insight: He missed Sunday's game for the same reason. He's likely going to be a day-to-day decision until the All-Star break.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP7/1/2013 4:32:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (hand) played catch for five minutes from 70-80 feet Monday, according to SFGate.com.
Insight: Vogelsong broke his right pinky back on May 20 when he was hit by a pitch. That he played catch Monday was surprising because he had a swollen hand and couldn't straighten his pinky just a few days ago. He's hoping to return in 4-5 weeks.
Hunter Pence, RF7/1/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Hunter Pence has never had much trouble producing against Reds starter Bronson Arroyo.
Insight: Pence has a 12-for-35 (.343) history against Arroyo. That includes four doubles, a triple, two homers and three walks. Pence hit .284 with 13 homers, 42 RBI, 47 runs, 13 steals and an .818 OPS over the first three months of the season, making him a good all-around fantasy contributor.
Buster Posey, C6/30/2013 3:13:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is dealing with "general tightness" in his legs, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Posey is making his second straight start at first base Sunday due to the discomfort. Brandon Belt will sit again with a lefty on the mound.
Marco Scutaro, 2BCold6/30/2013 2:46:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro is not in the lineup Sunday due to a back issue, according to Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area.
Insight: It's the same thing Scutaro dealt with in April. He should be fine after one or two games off.
Marco Scutaro, 2BCold6/29/2013 8:50:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro is 11-for-44 (.250) in 11 games since returning from his finger injury.
Insight: Scutaro missed a week due to "mallet finger" after getting hit by a pitch on June 11. He's playing through the injury, so that might have something to do with this cold streak.
Matt Cain, SPHot6/29/2013 8:44:00 PM
Description: Giants pitcher Matt Cain has posted a 1.82 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP and a 30/6 K/BB in 34 2/3 innings over his last five starts.
Insight: The old Cain has returned. The righty allowed three hits and one run while walking one and striking out five in eight innings Saturday against the Rockies. Cain's two biggest issues over his first 12 starts, when he had a 5.45 ERA, was his 1.57 HR/9 and 2.91 BB/9; over his last five starts, his HR/9 is 0.78 and his BB/9 is 1.56 BB/9.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B6/28/2013 10:43:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a career.368 hitter with a pair of home runs and a 1.320 OPS versus Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin.
Insight: Sandoval went 2-for-12 in the three games since his return from the disabled list. This favorable matchup should help.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP6/27/2013 11:27:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong has been cleared to remove the protective splint from his right hand, according to CSNBayArea.com.
Insight: Vogelsong broke his right pinky back on May 20 when he was hit by a pitch. The right-hander's next step will be starting a throwing program, but he's still about a month away from returning.
Tim Lincecum, SP6/27/2013 11:01:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum allowed 10 hits and four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Lincecum is 4-8 with a 4.64 ERA in 95 innings. He has a 26.6 percent line-drive rate, one of the worst in the league. Anyone hoping the right-hander would return to Cy Young form has been sorely disappointed.
Buster Posey, C6/27/2013 10:57:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer Wednesday against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers.
Insight: Posey came in with poor career numbers against Kershaw, but he was able to get one out of the yard against the Dodgers lefty in the fourth inning. Posey is hitting .314 with 10 homers and 45 RBI, which is similar to where he was last year on this date (.298, 10 HR, 40 RBI). Posey hit .385 with 14 homers and a 1.102 OPS in the second half last year, and fantasy owners can only hope he does it again.
Buster Posey, C6/26/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey hasn't done much against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, going 7-for-38 (.184) with 10 strikeouts over his career.
Insight: Posey is having another fine season (.308, 9 HR, 43 RBI) as he battles the Cardinals' Yadier Molina for the NL All-Star catcher position. However, today's matchup isn't likely to help his cause.
Hunter Pence, RF6/26/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is a career .069 hitter (2-for-29) with seven strikeouts against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Pence (.292, 12 HR, 40 RBI) continues to be a solid, if unspectacular, producer. He plays every day and by season's end will once again be a decent fantasy value. The Giants could have trouble scoring runs against Kershaw as the heart of the order, Buster Posey and Pence don't hit him very well.
Chad Gaudin, SP6/25/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Chad Gaudin, who was placed on the disabled list Monday, said he expects to be activated when he's eligible on July 6, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Gaudin took a line drive off his pitching arm in his last start and has a contusion. He shouldn't be out longer than July 6.
Chad Gaudin, SP6/24/2013 9:27:00 PM
Description: San Francisco righthander Chad Gaudin won't be able to make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Dodgers. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Bay Area
Insight: If Gaudin's elbow is still hurting tomorrow, the team will probably place him on the DL. Gaudin took a line drive off his arm in a game last Thursday.
Angel Pagan, CF6/24/2013 9:23:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan is headed for surgery on his torn hamstring. He'll be out for the next 10-to-12 weeks. SOURCE: Anthony Witrado, Sporting News
Insight: At this point, Pagan will be lucky to return before the season's over. There's no need for fantasy owners to waste a roster spot on Pagan anymore.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B6/24/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval (foot) has been activated from the DL and should be in the lineup for Monday night's game against the rival Dodgers.
Insight: Sandoval hasn't played since June 8th because of a strained foot. He's batting .289 with eight homers and 37 RBI in 57 games.
Chad Gaudin, SP6/22/2013 9:53:00 PM
Description: Giants righthander Chad Gaudin might not be able to make his next start Tuesday against the Dodgers. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He bruised his pitching arm in his start Thursday against the Marlins. We should have an update on Gaudin's status after he throws a bullpen session on Sunday.
Barry Zito, SP6/22/2013 9:44:00 PM
Description: Giants lefthander Barry Zito held the Marlins to just one run in seven innings Saturday at AT&T Park.

Description: Padres starter Eric Stults is coming off a two-hit complete game effort in his last start and is 2-1 with a 1.45 ERA and a 22/1 K/BB over his last four starts, but Giants catcher Buster Posey hasn't had much of an issue against the lefty.
Insight: Posey, who is hitting .436 with 11 RBI over his last 10 games, has gone 6-for-10 with two doubles, a homer and two BB against Stults.

Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro remains out of the lineup with a pinky injury.
Insight: Scutaro has been sidelined since getting hit by a pitch last Tuesday. At this point it might make more sense for the Giants to go ahead and put Scutaro (.332, 2 HR, 15 RBI) on the disabled list.
Hunter Pence, RF6/17/2013 10:22:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is a career .154 hitter (4-for-26) with three times as many strikeouts as hits against Padres starter Edinson Volquez.
Insight: Pence (.297, 11 HR, 38 RBI) continues to be a solid, if unspectacular, producer. He plays every day and by season's end will once again be a decent fantasy value. He's currently on an eight-game hitting streak, but that will be severly tested on Monday in this unfavorable matchup.

Angel Pagan, CF6/12/2013 8:07:00 PM
Description: Giants outfielder Angel Pagan (hamstring) won't be activated before the team's road trip ends Sunday, according to CSNBayArea.com.

Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks in 4 2/3 innings Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Lincecum limited Toronto to three hits and one run over seven innings to win his last start, but it was only a brief moment of relief for fantasy owners. Lincecum has given up line drives at a career-high rate of 25.5 percent this season and has allowed a career-high contact rate on pitches in the strike zone.

Insight: It came off left-hander Tyler Skaggs. The first baseman is hitting .310 in 42 at-bats against left-handed pitching this season, but this was his first home run against them. He has seven home runs overall, but his struggles against righties (despite being a lefty hitter) are hurting his fantasy value.
Chad Gaudin, SP6/9/2013 8:36:00 PM
Description: Giants righty Chad Gaudin fired six innings and allowed five hits and two runs with a walk and seven strikeouts Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Gaudin has won both of his starts since joining the rotation. He owns a 2.32 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP this season working primarily in middle relief and should hold onto a rotation spot until Ryan Vogelsong returns next month.

Description: According to Comcast Bay Area's Andrew Baggarly, Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will have a precautionary MRI on his left foot.
Insight: Sandoval aggravated a foot injury that was bothering him earlier in the week. It's doubtful that Sandoval (.289, 8 HR, 37 RBI) will end up on the DL, though he's unlikely to play in the series finale Sunday at Chase Field.

Buster Posey, C6/2/2013 7:06:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey crushed four hits Sunday against St. Louis.
Insight: Two of the four hits went for extra bases. He's having another excellent season, hitting .308 with seven homers and 31 RBI. The 2012 NL MVP leads all major league catchers in slugging (.514) and is second in OPS (.904).

Description: San Francisco outfielder Angel Pagan will not play again Sunday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Pagan hasn't played since last Saturday due to a strained right hamstring. He did some running Sunday and said it was his "best day so far." The team must think he'll be ready to return this week if they haven't placed him on the DL yet.
Matt Cain, SPCold6/1/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain had an odd start Saturday against the Cardinals, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in the third inning but retiring all 15 batters he faced in his other five innings.

Insight: Pagan (.262, 3 HR, 24 RBI) won Saturday's game with a walkoff inside-the-park home run, but said he felt it even before the final at-bat. Consider him day-to-day and should avoid a stint on the disabled list.

Insight: Lincecum has cut down on his walks after issuing 11 free passes in his first two starts, but he's still extremely hittable. He has allowed line drives at a 27 percent rate and has been lucky to only have a .306 BABIP. The right-hander's chase rate is down to just 24.8 percent, his lowest his his rookie year. With Lincecum's fastball down to 90.2 mph, batters can let his changeup, which he is throwing at the same velocity as he always has, pass by out of the zone.
Ryan Vogelsong, SPCold5/16/2013 7:54:00 PM
Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy is giving Ryan Vogelsong one last chance to prove he belongs in the starting rotation. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Mercury News
Insight: Vogelsong (1-4, 8.06 ERA) has thrown just one quality start in eight tries this season. He'll make his scheduled start Monday against Washington but we're not sure what will happen after that.
Brandon Belt, 1B5/16/2013 11:14:00 AM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt is hitting .444 with six RBI during his current six-game hitting streak and homered in two of the last three games. However, he has an unfavorable matchup with Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin on the hill Thursday.
Insight: Belt is 25-for-96 (.260) with five homers against right-handers this season, compared to 5-for-26 (.192) against lefties, but Chacin, a righty, has held him hitless in 10 career at-bats.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BHot5/16/2013 11:11:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has homered in three of the last four games and is 7-for-17 with two blasts and three walks against Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin.
Insight: Sandoval suffered a broken hamate bone in his hand in each of the last two seasons and missed all of May in 2011 and most of May last year, so he's already ahead of the curve this season with 154 at-bats, a .312 average, seven longballs and 30 RBI on May 16.
Ryan Vogelsong, SPCold5/15/2013 10:34:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong allowed six hits and eight runs (three earned) in two innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays. The Giants made a couple of errors behind him, and he compounded them by serving up two homers.
Insight: After eight starts, the right-hander is 1-4 with an 8.06 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. He has allowed six or more runs in each of his last four starts. According to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com, manager Bruce Bochy said after the game that there is no guarantee Vogelsong will take his next turn in the rotation.
Santiago Casilla, RP5/15/2013 6:01:00 PM
Description: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla (knee) is expected to be available out of the bullpen Wednesday, according to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com.
Insight: Casilla has been dealing with a cyst on his right knee and hasn't pitched since May 8.
Brandon Belt, 1B5/14/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt homered Tuesday for the second straight game.
Insight: Belt went 2-for-3 to raise his average to .244. He started slow but is batting .305 with five homers and 15 RBI over his last 20 games.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BHot5/14/2013 10:43:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has homered in three straight games.
Insight: He was 0-for-4 Tuesday against the Blue Jays went hit a three-run blast off Brad Lincoln in the top of the ninth with the Giants trailing 10-3 to salvage his night for fantasy owners. The stocky third baseman is hitting .316 with seven homers and 29 RBI in 38 games.
Barry Zito, SP5/14/2013 10:39:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Barry Zito served up 12 hits and eight runs (five earned) in just 5 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Zito still has just a 3.40 ERA in eight starts, but his WHIP is 1.44. His ERA has been saved from further damage by eight unearned runs.
Tim Lincecum, SP5/12/2013 7:47:00 PM
Description: San Francisco righthander Tim Lincecum tossed seven scoreless frames Sunday in a win over Atlanta.
Insight: Lincecum is off to a much better start than last season. Last season after two months, the former Cy Young winner was 2-6 with a 5.82 ERA. This year, he's 3-2 with a 4.07 ERA in eight starts.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B5/12/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval left Saturday's game after being hit on the right forearm by a pitch. X-rays were negative, but he could sit out Sunday's game as a precaution.
Insight: Kung Fu Panda is having a solid season (.315, 5 HR, 25 RBI), so hopefully this is just a minor problem.
Madison Bumgarner, SP5/11/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner was spectacular Saturday in a victory over Atlanta (7 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 11 K's).
Insight: Saturday was Bumgarner's second double-digit strikeout game of the season. He's given up one run or less in three of his last four starts.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B5/10/2013 10:43:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is just 2-for-17 (.118) against Atlanta right-hander Tim Hudson.
Insight: Kung Fu Panda is having a solid season and is a better hitter as a left-handed batter (.333 vs. .270 at a righ-handed batter), but this matchup hasn't been a productive one.
Angel Pagan, CF5/9/2013 6:30:00 PM
Description: Giants outfielder Angel Pagan (groin) is back in the lineup Thursday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: An MRI Wednesday revealed that he is dealing with an abductor strain in his groin, not a hamstring injury as he initially thought, but the injury appears minor nevertheless.
Santiago Casilla, RP5/8/2013 8:29:00 PM
Description: San Francisco reliever Santiago Casilla is set to have an MRI on his right knee. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Mercury News
Insight: Casilla tweaked something Wednesday in a win against the Phillies. He only matters in fantasy leagues that keep track of holds.
Barry Zito, SP5/8/2013 7:20:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Barry Zito didn't walk a batter and allowed just four hits and one run in seven innings Wednesday against Philadelphia.
Insight: Zito allowed nine runs in 2 2/3 innings on April 16 at Milwaukee but he has given up a total of three earned runs over 36 2/3 innings in his other six starts.
Hunter Pence, RFHot5/8/2013 7:17:00 PM
Description: Giants outfielder Hunter Pence went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk and a steal Wednesday against the Phillies, his former team.
Insight: Pence is batting .333 with five doubles, a triple, three homers and 10 RBI over his last 11 games. He has seven homers and six steals this season.
Marco Scutaro, 2BHot5/8/2013 7:11:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro is 15-for-31 (.484) with four walks and one strikeout during an eight-game hitting streak.
Insight: Scutaro has five multi-hit efforts during that stretch, including a 3-for-5 game Wednesday against the Phillies. He has raised his average from .215 to .282 during the streak.
Angel Pagan, CF5/8/2013 2:50:00 PM
Description: Giants outfielder Angel Pagan, who returned from a hamstring injury Tuesday, is not in Wednesday's lineup. He went hitless on Tuesday.
Insight: Pagan missed the last couple of games with a bum hamstring, but it was never a serious concern. He is hitting .268 this year with one homer and 14 RBI.
Buster Posey, C5/8/2013 2:46:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is not in Wednesday's getaway day game against the Phillies.
Insight: No injury, just the normal day game after a night game off. He's batting .282 with 4 HR and 19 RBI. Solid, but not the production we are used to from the 2012 NL MVP. The day off should do him some good.
Angel Pagan, CF5/7/2013 6:32:00 PM
Description: Giants outfielder Angel Pagan (hamstring) is back in the lineup Tuesday.
Insight: He's missed the last couple of games with a bum hamstring, but it was never a serious concern. Pagan is hitting .275 this year with one homer and 13 RBI.
Angel Pagan, CF5/6/2013 9:16:00 PM
Description: The Giants expect Angel Pagan to be back in the lineup Tuesday against the Phillies. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Bay Area
Insight: He's missed the last couple of games with a bum hamstring. Pagan is hitting .275 this year with one homer and 13 RBI.
Angel Pagan, CF5/6/2013 6:54:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan is not in the lineup for Monday night's game against Philadelphia.
Insight: Pagan is battling a strained hamstring. Andres Torres (.271, 1 HR, 3 RBI) will get the start in center field.
Angel Pagan, CF5/6/2013 9:33:00 AM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan left Saturday's game with a right hamstring strain, did not play on Sunday and is unlikely to play Monday as well.
Insight: Pagan (.275, 24 runs, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 4 SB) is not expected to need a trip to the disabled list, but could be out for a couple more days.
Angel Pagan, CF5/5/2013 11:52:00 AM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan left Saturday's game with a right hamstring strain, but manager Bruce Bochy didn't seem too concerned, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Insight: Pagan is not expected to play Sunday, but Bochy didn't rule it out because of how mild the strain is.
Hunter Pence, RF5/3/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: Dodgers starter Clayon Kershaw has made Giants outfielder Hunter Pence look downright silly in his career, holding Pence to one hit in 26 at-bats.
Insight: Pence went 0-for-3 in his last meeting against Kershaw, which came on Opening Day this season. He's batting .268 with five homers, five steals and 15 RBI but should be avoided Friday.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B5/3/2013 10:16:00 AM
Description: Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw dominates most hitters in baseball, but Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is not one of them. Sandoval is 10-for-33 (.303) in his career against Kershaw.
Insight: Kershaw hasn't allowed a homer and struck out Sandoval seven times, but the Kung Fu Panda clearly doesn't have a problem putting good wood on the ball against Kershaw often enough to help fantasy owners.
Brandon Belt, 1B5/3/2013 10:16:00 AM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt is just 3-for-24 with 11 strikeouts in his career against Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Belt has homered in two of the last three games and driven in six runs in that span. He also has a higher batting average against lefties, both in his career (.272) and this season (.294), but Kershaw is the best lefty in the majors.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/30/2013 5:21:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval (elbow) is in Tuesday's starting lineup, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.
Insight: Sandoval left Monday's game after his elbow "tingled," but he felt fine today. Sandoval has a bone spur in his right elbow that is causing an irritated nerve, so he'll likely deal with recurring soreness all season, but he has opted to play through it rather than undergo surgery.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/30/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval left Monday's game in the sixth inning with right elbow discomfort. it's the same elbow that gave him problems this spring.
Insight: Sandoval's average is .327 with a .826 OPS and 20 RBI, so his fantasy value is high. Hopefully, this injury won't require a stint on the disabled list.
Brandon Crawford, SS4/30/2013 11:28:00 AM
Description: Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is hitless in eight at-bats versus Arizona right-hander Trevor Cahill with half of the at-bats ending in strikeouts.
Insight: Crawford is one of this season's biggest fantasy surprises. He's batting .281 with five homers, 14 RBI and an .885 OPS. Great numbers for any shortstop. This matchup, however, is an unfavorable one.
Brandon Belt, 1BCold4/29/2013 2:00:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt is a candidate to sit in Monday's game against Arizona as he's just 2-for-15 with nine strikeouts against Diamondbacks right-hander Ian Kennedy.
Insight: Belt is batting just .231 this season with little power (one home run, five extra base hits in 78 at-bats) and has no fantasy value at this time.
Ryan Vogelsong, SPCold4/28/2013 9:21:00 PM
Description: After five starts, Giants hurler Ryan Vogelsong's ERA sits at 6.23. The right-hander allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits (three homers), walked three and struck out six in five innings Sunday versus San Diego.
Insight: Vogelsong has been very good over the past two seasons, but while his K/9 and BB/9 in 2013 are nearly identical to last year, he has given up a startling seven homers in 30 1/3 innings and stranded just 65.5 percent of runners.
Buster Posey, C4/28/2013 9:20:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey has put together a nine-game hitting streak and raised his average from .213 to .286 in that span.
Insight: Posey won the batting title and NL MVP last year, so we were never worried about his production.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/28/2013 9:17:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval was 4-for-5 with an RBI Sunday against the Padres.
Insight: Sandoval's average dipped to .276 after an 0-for-4 on Friday night, but he has gone 7-for-11 over the last two games.
Hunter Pence, RF4/28/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is a career .423 hitter (11-for-26) against Padres starter Jason Marquis with a 1.269 OPS.
Insight: Pence is off to a productive start with four homers and 13 RBI. He's rarely an exciting fantasy option, but he plays every day and accumulates solid fantasy totals. Sunday is a good matchup for the Giants' outfielder.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/27/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 8-for-13 (.615) against Padres starter Eric Stults with a 1.513 OPS.
Insight: Sandoval has knocked in 18 runs this season, but has just one in his last four games. This favorable matchup should turn this mini-RBI slump around.
Buster Posey, C4/26/2013 1:20:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey has faced Padres starter Andrew Cashner just six times, but he has taken him deep twice for a 2.071 OPS.
Insight: Posey owns a six-game hitting streak to raise his average to .262, well below expectations, but heading in the right direction. This matchup should continue the upward trend.
Buster Posey, C4/24/2013 1:50:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey will get Wednesday afternoon off. No injury, just a day game following a night game.
Insight: Posey has a modest five-game hitting streak to raise his average to .250. He has struggled in the daylight this season, batting just .219 during the afternoon and .281 at night.
Brandon Belt, 1BCold4/22/2013 6:29:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt will miss his second game in a row Monday night against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: It makes sense since Belt is hitting just .167 against lefties this season and Wade Miley (2-0, 2.79 ERA) will be throwing for Arizona. Then again, Belt isn't hitting much better against righthanders (.188). Joaquin Arias (.188, 0 HR, 2 RBI) will make his third start of the season at first base.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold4/22/2013 10:51:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 1-for-9 (.111) against Arizona starter Wade Miley.
Insight: Sandoval has just one extra base hit in his last 19 at-bats and doesn't figure to improve on the mark against Miley. Sit him on Monday.
Barry Zito, SP4/21/2013 7:05:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Barry Zito tossed seven shutout frames Sunday in a 5-0 win over San Diego.
Insight: If you take away Zito's meltdown against the Brewers last week (2 2/3 IP, 8 H, 9 ER), the 34-year-old would be 3-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Zito's next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Padres.
Brandon Belt, 1BCold4/21/2013 3:15:00 PM
Description: Slumping San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt won't be in the lineup Sunday versus the Padres.
Insight: Belt went hitless (0-for-3) in a 2-0 win Saturday and overall, he's hitting just .183 for the season. Joaquin Arias (.250, 0 HR, 2 RBI) will get the start at first for the Giants.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/21/2013 10:54:00 AM
Description: It's a small sample size, but Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 6-for-10 with two extra-base hits and two walks against Padres starter Eric Stults.
Insight: Sandoval went yard for the third time this year Saturday against the Padres and has 16 RBIs. He has struck out just six times in 65 at-bats while walking five times.
Tim Lincecum, SP4/21/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum looked like his old self Saturday against the Padres. He fired 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowed four hits, walked two and struck out eight to improve to 2-0.
Insight: Lincecum was facing the weak-hitting Padres, but it was good to see him put up a 58-37 strike-to-ball ratio. He has walked just three batters over his last 11 2/3 innings after issuing 11 free passes in his first 11 frames. With reduced fastball velocity making his changeup less effective, Lincecum's margin for error is greatly reduced from his Cy Young seasons.
