Ole Miss takes down TCU at CWS

Omaha, NE ( - Will Allen hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning and Mississippi defeated No. 7 TCU, 6-4, in a College World Series elimination game on Thursday night.

Allen went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, while Sikes Orvis posted three hits and two RBI for Ole Miss, which will take on top-ranked Virginia on Friday night.

Rebels starter Sam Smith allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings, but the combination of Josh Laxer, Wyatt Short and Aaron Greenwood yielded just a run on a Kevin Cron solo homer over the final 5 2/3 frames in relief while walking three.

Tyler Alexander surrendered three runs on six hits over 3 1/3 innings for TCU, which led the nation in ERA but gave up its most runs in 15 games.

The game was tied 4-4 before Ole Miss went in front with a run in the seventh and tacked on another in the ninth.

Auston Bousfield was hit by a pitch and Austin Anderson singled to lead off the seventh before Allen singled up the middle to plate Bousfield.

TCU put runners on first and second with one away in the eighth. Dylan Fitzgerald struck out, but Jerrick Suiter and Boomer White both stole bases to put the go-ahead run on second. Greenwood, though, fanned pinch-hitter Colby Bortles to end the threat.

Orvis' slicing two-out, RBI double that just clipped chalk down the left-field line gave the Rebels a 6-4 cushion and Greenwood worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.

Earlier, Ole Miss opened the scoring with three runs in the third, but TCU got all three back in the fourth after working four walks in the frame.

J.B. Woodman led off the third with a double and advanced to third on Austin Knight's sacrifice bunt. Braxton Lee then singled to center to bring Woodman home. After Bousfield was hit by a pitch, Anderson flied out to center, but Allen whacked a double into the gap in right-center to plate Lee and Bousfield.

Cron began the fourth with a single, Suiter walked and Garrett Crain's groundout advanced both runners a base. Boomer White cracked a double to left to score Kron. Fitzgerald and Keaton Jones were issued free passes to score another run and Laxer replaced Smith on the mound.

Laxer struck out Kyle Bacak for the second out, but Cody Jones worked a bases- loaded walk to bring home White. Derek Odell flied out to end the frame.

Orvis' two-out RBI single in the fifth put Ole Miss back in front, but Cron's leadoff blast to left in the home half knotted the contest at 4-4.
