Insight: Kovalchuk stunned the hockey world by announcing his retirement from the NHL on Thursday. Turns out, Kovalchuk never wanted to quit hockey. He just wanted to play closer to home, which he now has the opportunity to do by playing in Russia. Kovalchuk's decision to leave the United States for Europe has already generated plenty of controversy. Jeremy Roenick, who played in the NHL from 1988 to 2009, had this to say on his Twitter account: "Kovalchuk is as selfish as they come!!! I'm appalled ... Hey Ilya, hope u live comfortably in Russia w the money u made from the 23 million u stole from the devils."

The most difficult thing for me is to leave the New Jersey Devils, a great organization that I have a lot of respect for, and our fans that have been great to me."
