Texans WR Hopkins cleared for action

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Houston Texans rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has been cleared by team medical staff and will be able to play in the club's season opener next Monday night in San Diego.

Hopkins suffered a concussion in an Aug. 17 preseason contest against the Dolphins, sustaining the head injury in the second quarter of a 24-17 win.

"I think he's come along well. Now, he's really going to have to learn more on the fly because he missed preseason games and things like that. You just have to have a short term memory and just move on from it," said veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson of his young charge. "I think he's done well so far and I think he's going to help us out a whole lot."

Hopkins was selected 27th overall by the Texans in the first round of April's draft.

The 6-foot-1 wideout caught 82 passes and set school records with 1,405 receiving yards and 18 touchdown receptions as a junior at Clemson last season. He completed his collegiate career with 206 receptions for 3,020 yards and 27 touchdowns.
