Description: Seattle Mariners closer David Aardsma will not have elbow surgery to repair a strained ligament. The Mariners said Friday that the right-hander met with Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles to get a second opinion on a diagnosis by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan. Yocum and Khalfayan conferred and have prescribed one month of rest, followed by a throwing program. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Brandon League is more and more likely to keep his closer's role all season since there is no guarantee that Aardsma's rehab will be the ultimate solution.

Description: The Seattle Mariners say reliever David Aardsma has a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow. Aardsma has been on the 15-day disabled list all season while recovering from hip labrum surgery. After getting an MRI on his elbow Saturday, Aardsma was examined Monday by Mariners medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan, who diagnosed the pitcher with a Grade 2 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament. Insight: Brandon League's leash just got quite a bit longer.

Description: Mariners closer David Aardsma won't pitch for a few days after experiencing stiffness in his right forearm during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Brandon League has pitched well in Aardsma's absence, so this is good news if you own League. The M's, however, need to re-establish Aardsma's value so they can trade him so he will get the job back at some point this season. Don't drop League, however, as he could get the job back very quickly.

Description: Mariners RP David Aardsma will start a rehab assignment and, barring setbacks, should resume his job as the Mariners closer in about 2 weeks. SOURCE:
Insight: If you own Brandon League in your league you have two options: you can get 2 more weeks of saves then hold him as a possible replacement if Aardsma gets hurt again, or 2) you can see what value League has and you can try to deal him now.

Description: As expected, Aardsma opens the season on the 15-day DL as he works back from January hip surgery.
Insight: The closer is expected to at least miss the first month of the season. Once he's back, we'll see if he can immediately take the job back from Brandon League. (

Description: David Aardsma expects to miss the first two weeks of the season as he recovers from hip surgery. SOURCE: HERALDNET.COM
Insight: Call us pessimistic but we are going to project a little more than that in terms of missed time. Brandon League is most likely to earn early season saves but they could choose to use a committee.
1/10/2011 10:03:00 AM
Description: The Seattle Times reports that Aardsma's recent hip surgery might keep him from being ready for opening day.
Insight: The procedure wasn't originally expected to be that serious. Brandon League finished second on the team with six saves (behind Aardsma's 31) last year and would figure to be the next closer in. (

Description: David Aardsma's hip surgery was more extensive than originally planned and he might not be ready for opening day. SOURCE: SEATTLE TIMES
Insight: Time to downgrade him a bit and be skeptical of save chances in April. Brandon League is his likely temporary replacement and there is a chance that League could take the job and run with it.

Insight: Leave him in the same spot in your rankings for now and we will wait and see how he looks by late February. Brandon League is the closer-in-waiting in Seattle.

Description: David Aardsma is available for trade this winter. SOURCE: SEATTLE TIMES
Insight: If he leaves Seattle it will likely be for a setup role so his mixed league value would disappear.

Description: David Aardsma is expected to be ready to pitch again Friday. He has been out since August 18 when he took a line drive off the ribs. SOURCE: Tacoma News Tribune
Insight: Aardsma has not pitched great this season, as evident by his 0-6 record. It will be good for him to get back out there and finish out the season, but he has little to no value at this point.
