National League Game Summary - Atlanta at Los Angeles
(Sunday, June 9th)
Final Score: Atlanta 8, Los Angeles 1
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Dan Uggla hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs as Atlanta took down Los Angeles, 8-1, in the finale of a four-game series from Dodger Stadium.
"To get two more today (after one last night) was big," Uggla said of his longball explosion. "I've been in a slump and this is a great way to break out."
Freddie Freeman added a bases-clearing double and Evan Gattis drove in the other run for the Braves, who earned a split thanks to wins in the final two contests and have taken seven of nine overall.
Mike Minor (8-2) scattered six hits and one run over his six innings on the hill, fanning six and walking three.
Skip Schumaker knocked in the lone run for the Dodgers, who fell to 4-3 on their current 10-game homestand.
Recalled from Triple-A prior to the contest, Matt Magill (0-2) lasted 3 2/3 frames while allowing four hits and seven runs -- three earned -- while issuing six walks.
"He can't get into bad counts. He can't expect to get away with it for very long. It's tough to watch, but we put him in a bad position, having to get on a plane just to get here," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.
Atlanta picked up four runs in the third. Jason Heyward walked, Justin Upton reached on an error and Freeman singled to load the bases, then a Gattis sacrifice fly plated Heyward ahead of Uggla's three-run blast for a 4-1 Atlanta edge.
In the fourth, Minor walked with one out, then Heyward singled and Upton walked with two down, before Freeman's double cleared the bases for a 7-1 contest and chased Magill from the mound.
"This means an awful lot to have a game like this in my hometown. We were ready to break out after three tough games," said Freeman.
Uggla launched his second of the game into the seats beyond the wall in right center to start the fifth and the hosts were unable to mount a charge from there.
Minor finished his outing by retiring the side in order in the sixth, then Alex Wood stranded a runner on third in the seventh before tossing a 1-2-3 eighth.
Yasiel Puig singled with two gone in the ninth, but David Carpenter fanned Jerry Hairston swinging to cap the contest.
The Dodgers punctured Minor in their first turn at the plate. Puig led off with a single and Nick Punto bunted his way on, and after a walk to Adrian Gonzalez, Puig was erased at home on a force at the plate. Two batters later, Schumaker's roller near the mound scored Punto.
Uggla posted his 18th career multi-homer game ... The Dodgers placed pitcher Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list to make room for Magill ... Puig, who was 3-for-5 with a double, finished his first week in the majors by hitting .464 (13-for-28) with four homers and 10 RBI ... Magill has been torched for nine hits and 14 runs -- nine earned -- with 15 walks and seven strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings over his last two starts.
