American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at New York
(Saturday, April 14th)
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 7, New York 1
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Howie Kendrick went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and C.J. Wilson pitched six solid innings, as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took down the New York Yankees, 7-1, in the middle test of a three- game series.
Chris Iannetta and Vernon Wells also homered for the Angels, who snapped a three-game skid. Albert Pujols went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Wilson (2-0) gave up one run on six hits to pick up his first career win against the Yankees. He struck out two and walked two while improving to 1-3 in 22 lifetime appearances (five starts) against New York.
"He's a competitor," Pujols said of Wilson. "When he gets in trouble he doesn't let things bother him."
Robinson Cano drove in the lone run for the Yankees, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Phil Hughes (0-2) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits. He fanned six and walked two.
"He can get you to expand the zone and he can break bats and get in on guys," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Wilson. "When he got the ball away, we hit pretty good, but when he got it in, we did not."
Both teams left men in scoring position in the first inning. The Angels put men on the corners with one out, but Kendrys Morales and Torii Hunter went down swinging. New York had men on first and third with two outs, but Mark Teixeira grounded out.
Los Angeles' offense got going in the second. Wells singled and scored on Iannetta's homer that snuck inside the right-field foul pole.
The Angels tacked on another run in the third. Kendrick led off with a single and crossed the plate on Pujols' double to center, which sailed over the head of Curtis Granderson.
Kendrick's three-run homer in the fourth made it 6-0. Iannetta walked and Erick Aybar reached base on an infield single. Kendrick then cleared the wall in left.
Wells' solo homer to left in the fifth gave the Angels a seven-run cushion.
But the Yankees got the run back in the home half of the frame. Eduardo Nunez and Derek Jeter started the inning with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Cano hit an RBI single to left. Wilson settled down and retired the next two batters to keep it a 7-1 game.
New York left more men on base in the sixth. With men on second and third and two outs, Jeter flied out.
Kevin Jepsen, LaTroy Hawkins and Jordan Walden each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Angels.
Hughes fell to 3-2 lifetime versus the Angels...New York went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10, while LA went 1-for-8 with RISP and left six men on...Jeter had two hits.
