Red Sox activate Buchholz for Tuesday start

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox activated pitcher Clay Buchholz from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday, in time to make his first start in more than three months in the opener of a three-game set against the Rays.

Buchholz has been sidelined since June 9 due to a strained neck. He did not make his last scheduled assignment because of the injury, which occurred during a win over the Angels one day prior.

The right-hander was in the midst of an outstanding 2013 campaign, posting a 9-0 record along with an MLB-best 1.71 ERA through 12 outings this season, while yielding just 57 hits in 84 1/3 innings. The Red Sox won all but one of his starts (11-1) before the injury.

Boston made it 12-1 as Buchholz ran his record to 10-0 with a 2-0 victory. The 29-year-old tossed five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out six.

To make room for Buchholz on the 40-man roster, the Sox designated pitcher Jose De La Torre for assignment.

De La Torre did not post a decision in seven appearances with Boston this season, pitching to a 6.35 earned run average after allowing eight earned runs in 11 1/3 innings.
