Which one of these NBA guards is having a better fantasy season: nine-time, All-Star Ray Allen, 2009 All-Star Devin Harris or Detroit guard Rodney Stuckey?
Obviously it's a trick question with the least likely name, Stuckey, being the correct answer.
Neither Allen (16.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.9 apg) nor Harris (15.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 5.8 apg) is having a particularly good season while Stuckey continues to improve each year. Stuckey has become a focal point of the Pistons' offense, averaging 18.2 ppg while pulling down 4.2 rebound and 4.4 assists-per-game.
He was a first-round draft choice (15th overall) of the Pistons in 2007 after a great two-year career at Eastern Washington. The 6'5" guard averaged 24.6 ppg as a sophomore, good enough for seventh-best in the nation.
Stuckey played only about 19 minutes-a-game that first season while learning from veterans like Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton. Still, he averaged 7.6 ppg and earned second-string All-Rookie team.
When Billups was traded to Denver early the following season, Stuckey got more playing time. He played 31.9 minutes-per-game 13.4 ppg. By the end of the season, with Allen Iverson benched, Stuckey was playing a starring role and had become "fantasy-worthy."
The Pistons' guard had a preseason ADP (Average Draft Position) of 120 - meaning he was selected around the 10th round. And he's proving to be a bargain, increasing his points production from 13.4 ppg to 18.2 ppg as well as his rebounding and steals totals.
In his third year, Stuckey has become a stats filler and a valuable fantasy guard. He might even be available in your league where statistics show he's owned in about 81% of all leagues. Even if another owner has his rights, he/she might not know how valuable a commodity he has and it could be a good idea to make him a trade offer. Things are looking bright for Stuckey and you too if you can get him into your starting lineup.
