Butler: new team, same production

Caron Butler will do the same things in Texas that he did in Washington.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It was a huge NBA trade, the seven-player deal between Washington and Dallas primarily involving Caron Butler and Josh Howard, but from a fantasy perspective, not much will change for Butler owners.

Butler was the main acquisition for the Mavericks and he will do the same things in Texas that he did in Washington - fill the stats sheet. Butler averaged 16.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.4 spg for the 17-40 Wizards. He'll immediately fill the role that Josh Howard played, only better. Howard averaged 12.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg and 1.4 apg, but was a distraction and his numbers had slipped in recent years.

I'll be interested to see how many minutes Butler plays at small forward and how many he gets at shooting guard. He'll likely not play 39 minutes like he was in Washington, but as long as he gets 30+ minutes, he should be able to maintain his numbers. Butler will certainly enjoy getting passes from an All- Star point guard in Jason Kidd and with the weapons the Mavericks can put on the floor, he should have more freedom to make plays.

Brendan Haywood will likely get the start at center in Dallas, but I'm thinking he won't get as many offensive opportunities as in D.C., other than garbage baskets off offensive rebounds. DeShawn Stevenson will be a backup in Dallas and have little fantasy value.

In Washington, it's likely that only Howard will have any fantasy value what with Drew Gooden stuck behind Antawn Jamison on the depth chart. Howard will have to adjust to being a third or fourth option for the Wizards behind Jamison, Randy Foye and Mike Miller. I could "see" his numbers slide further as he joins a non-competitive club. Beware.
