New York Jets Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Chris Johnson, RB4/16/2014 3:18:00 PM
Description: The Jets have reached an agreement with three-time Pro Bowl running back Chris Johnson.
Insight: According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, it's a two-year, $8 million deal. Johnson's yards per carry dipped to 3.9 last season with Tennessee and the bigger Chris Ivory (6-foot, 222 pounds) will probably see most of the carries around the goal line. For the first time in years, Johnson isn't a must-start fantasy player.
Jacoby Ford, WR4/2/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: Former Raiders receiver Jacoby Ford has signed with the New York Jets.
Insight: Ford's one constant is that he's been injured more than healthy and he's yet to prove he can be a full-time NFL receiver. Since being drafted in 2010, he's totaled just 57 receptions for 848 yards and three touchdowns. He does own four career kickoff returns for scores.
Michael Vick, QB3/21/2014 7:10:00 PM
Description: Michael Vick has agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract with the Jets. SOURCE: Adam Schefter, ESPN
Insight: Vick wanted a starting job and now he has one. With Eric Decker in the fold, he'll have a pretty good receiver to throw to as well. Geno Smith's fantasy value will be zilch unless Vick gets hurt. Fortunately for Smith, Vick hasn't played an entire 16-game season since 2006.
Mark Sanchez, QB3/21/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: The Jets have officially released quarterback Mark Sanchez. SOURCE: Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports
Insight: He became expendable when the team signed Mike Vick earlier today. Most of the league's quarterback openings have already been filled, meaning Sanchez will likely have to settle for a backup job in 2014.
Santonio Holmes, WR3/10/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: The Jets have released wideout Santonio Holmes.
Insight: Holmes had just 23 receptions and one touchdown in 11 games last season, though he did average 19.8 yards per catch. His time in New York was a complete failure compared to his production in Pittsburgh.
Nick Folk, K3/1/2014 6:58:00 PM
Description: Nick Folk received the Jets' franchise tag on Friday. SOURCE: Anwar Richardson, Yahoo Sports
Insight: Folk's annual salary will increase from $780,000 to just under $3.4 million. He was the 11th-highest scorer among fantasy kickers last season.
Sheldon Richardson, DL2/1/2014 9:43:00 PM
Description: Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was honored as the 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year on Saturday.
Insight: He barely beat out Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso for the award. Richardson clawed his way to 77 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season while also adding two touchdowns on four rushing attempts as a part-time fullback. The 6-foot-3, 294-pounder was drafted 13th overall out of Mizzou last April.
Santonio Holmes, WR1/22/2014 4:02:00 PM
Description: The Jets plan to release Santonio Holmes, Mark Sanchez and Antonio Cromartie to create $26.1 million in cap room, according to Rich Cimini of espnny.com.
Insight: Holmes had just 23 receptions and one touchdown in 11 games last season, though he did average 19.8 yards per catch.
Chris Ivory, RB12/22/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Jets running back Chris Ivory had his third 100-yard game of the season Sunday against the Browns.
Insight: Ivory dealt with a hamstring injury early in the season and didn't take the reigns of the team's backfield until Week 6, but he's been a solid flex option since then with 699 rushing yards and three touchdowns over his last nine games.
Antonio Cromartie, DB12/9/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie suffered a head injury in Sunday's game.
Insight: Cromartie stayed on the field all game, but after the game the injury came to light. If its a concussion he'll obviously have to go through the protocol before being allowed to play against Carolina next weekend.
Santonio Holmes, WR12/5/2013 2:42:00 PM
Description: Jets receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) is expected to be actice Sunday against Oakland.
Insight: Lets hope active means more than the three snaps he saw last week while "active." Fantasy owners should not trust him to be on the field or that quarterback Geno Smith could get him the ball even if he was open.
Geno Smith, QBCold12/2/2013 3:03:00 PM
Description: Jets quarterback Geno Smith will get the start next week against Oakland. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: It certainly can't be off his work Sunday against Miami. That performace was one of the worst we've seen this season (4-of-10, 29 yards, 1 INT) and got him replaced by Matt Simms at halftime. New York's struggling second round pick is making Jets fans miss Mark Sanchez.
Santonio Holmes, WR12/1/2013 12:08:00 PM
Description: Jets receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) is active Sunday against the Dolphins.
Insight: Holmes is far from 100 percent and had just one catch for 12 yards on four targets last week against the Ravens. He shouldn't be started in any leagues.
Chris Ivory, RB11/29/2013 4:21:00 PM
Description: New York halfback Chris Ivory is listed as probable on the team's Week 13 injury report.
Insight: Ivory suffered a sprained ankle Sunday against Baltimore but has been able to practice on a limited basis throughout the week. He'll split carries with Bilal Powell this week against the Dolphins.
Santonio Holmes, WR11/29/2013 3:45:00 PM
Description: A hamstring injury prevented Jets wideout Santonio Holmes from practicing on Friday. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: He's going to be a game-time decision Sunday against Miami. Fantasy owners probably won't be holding their breath as Holmes is only owned in about 18 percent of ESPN leagues.
Geno Smith, QBCold11/25/2013 6:29:00 PM
Description: New York QB Geno Smith will draw the start again in Week 13. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: If the Jets had a capable backup, he'd be starting already. Smith has been a disaster over the last six weeks, producing just one touchdown pass and ten interceptions in that span. Despite Smith's poor play, the Jets still have a decent shot at making the playoffs. They're tied with Tennessee for the final wild card spot in the AFC.
Chris Ivory, RB11/25/2013 9:25:00 AM
Description: Jets running back Chris Ivory suffered an ankle sprain in the first quarter.
Insight: Ivory had been hot with 237 yards and two touchdowns over the previous two weeks, but finished with nine carries for 35 yards to the disappointment of fantasy owners everywhere. We await word of the severity.
Jermaine Cunningham, LB11/20/2013 10:49:00 AM
Description: The Jets reached a deal with free agent linebacker Jermaine Cunningham on Wednesday.
Insight: This will be the third team Cunningham has been with in the last three months. With just three and a half sacks and two forced fumbles in three seasons, Cunningham probably won't be an every down player for his new team.
Chris Ivory, RB11/17/2013 5:42:00 PM
Description: Jets running back Chris Ivory came within two yards of the 100-yard bonus in Week 11 at Buffalo.
Insight: Ivory left no doubt about who New York's lead RB is. He had 98 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Bilal Powell had 27 yards on five rushes. Ivory has had 98 or more yards in three of the last four games and a touchdown in two straight.
Geno Smith, QB11/17/2013 3:45:00 PM
Description: Jets quarterback Geno Smith was benched Sunday against the Bills after throwing three interceptions.
Insight: Smith completed 8-of-23 for 103 yards and also fumbled twice, losing one. He was replaced by Matt Simms, son of Phil and brother of Chris.
Jeremy Kerley, WR11/17/2013 12:27:00 PM
Description: New York Jets wideout Jeremy Kerley (elbow) is inactive Sunday against the Bills.
Insight: Kerley dislocated his elbow in Week 9 against New Orleans. Santonio Holmes will play Sunday for the first time since Week 4, but fantasy owners should steer clear of any Jets receivers.
Santonio Holmes, WR11/16/2013 9:28:00 PM
Description: New York receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) will make his return Sunday against the Bills, but he won't be on the field for 100 percent of the snaps, according to ESPNNewYork.com. Holmes hasn't played since Week 4.
Insight: "Will he be on a pitch count? I think we’ll be smart about that," coach Rex Ryan said. "We’re not going to put him out there for 80 snaps. But does he look good to me? He absolutely looks good to me." Holmes is a WR4 at best.
Ed Reed, S11/14/2013 1:52:00 PM
Description: Safety Ed Reed has signed with the New York Jets.
Insight: Jets coach Rex Ryan had a previous relationship with Reed when both were in Baltimore. We're not sure how much Reed has to offer at this point, but he could certainly be a mentor for some of the Jets young defensive backs.
Santonio Holmes, WR11/12/2013 8:08:00 PM
Description: New York receiver Santonio Holmes expects to be released after the season. SOURCE: New York Daily News
Insight: It wouldn't exactly be a shock to see him go. Holmes wore out his welcome in East Rutherford a long time ago. He'll always be remembered for his Super Bowl heroics in Pittsburgh but the truth is Holmes has really only had a couple of productive seasons. In four games this season, the 29-year-old has made ten catches for 243 yards and one touchdown. Most of it came in a Week 3 win over Buffalo (five receptions for 154 yards).
Santonio Holmes, WR11/11/2013 5:27:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes (hamstring) could be back in Week 11, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.
Insight: "I think he'll play, said coach Rex Ryan. Holmes hasn't suited up since Sept. 29 at Tennessee. He has 243 yards on just 10 receptions this season, but 154 of them came in Week 3 versus the Bills, New York's Week 1 opponent. Don't expect consistent production from the 29-year-old.
Kellen Winslow, TE11/5/2013 10:33:00 AM
Description: Jets tight end Kellen Winslow has served his four-game suspension for violating the league's policy against PEDs.
Insight: Winslow has caught 17 balls for 169 yards and a pair of scores, but his only double-digit performance came in Week 1 against Tampa Bay. The end of the suspension isn't likely to change any fantasy lineups.
Chris Ivory, RB11/3/2013 5:28:00 PM
Description: Jets running back Chris Ivory had his second 100-yard game in three weeks Sunday against the Saints, his former team.
Insight: Ivory ran with a purpose against the team that traded him this past offseason, gaining 139 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries after seeing just six carries in Week 8 at Cincinnati. Bilal Powell finished with 29 yards on nine carries. The split will limit Ivory's fantasy value, but he should be the lead ballcarrier after New York's Week 10 bye.
Jeremy Kerley, WR11/3/2013 2:25:00 PM
Description: New York Jets wideout Jeremy Kerley (elbow) is done for the day due to an elbow injury, reports ESPN's John Clayton.
Insight: He had one catch for one yard before suffering the injury. Kerley has posted a couple of decent games this season, but has yet to crack the 100-yard mark in a game. With Jeff Cumberland (concussion) also out, David Nelson will serve as Geno Smith's top target in the passing game.
Jeremy Kerley, WR11/3/2013 2:09:00 PM
Description: New York Jets wideout Jeremy Kerley left the game against New Orleans with an undisclosed injury.
Insight: He had one catch for one yards before suffering the apparent injury. Kerley has posted a couple of decent games this season, but has yet to crack the 100-yard mark in a game.
Jeff Cumberland, TE11/3/2013 12:12:00 PM
Description: Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland (concussion) is out Sunday against the Saints.
Insight: Cumberland should be back after the Jets bye week. Look for David Nelson and Jeremy Kerley to be Geno Smith's top two targets against New Orleans.
Santonio Holmes, WR10/31/2013 2:13:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes (hamstring) is still at the working on an individual drills level and not yet ready for full contact, according to Rich Cimini.
Insight: The Jets have a bye in Week 10, so it seems likely we won't see Holmes until Week 11 at Buffalo. By this time no fantasy owner should be waiting for his return.
Santonio Holmes, WR10/28/2013 6:24:00 PM
Description: According to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, the Jets aren't "overly optimistic" about Santonio Holmes (hamstring) returning in Week 9 against the Saints.
Insight: The Jets have a bye in Week 10, so it seems likely we won't see Holmes until Week 11 at Buffalo. The Bengals locked down Jeremy Kerley Sunday, leaving David Nelson as Geno Smith's No. 1 target. Nelson caught eight passes for 80 yards on 12 targets, giving him 160 yards the last two games.
Jeff Cumberland, TE10/28/2013 6:21:00 PM
Description: Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland suffered a concussion Sunday against the Bengals, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Insight: It was a mild one. Cumberland is likely to play against the Saints but of course he'll have to pass concussion tests first. The tight end only had one catch for nine yards on two targets Sunday after seeing 16 targets the previous three games.
Santonio Holmes, WR10/25/2013 12:09:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes (hamstring) could sit out until after the team's bye (Week 10).
Insight: At this point fantasy owners should not be counting on Holmes to help them much before the playoffs. And if you have gotten into the playoffs without him, it's probably a good move to continue playing with the ones who got you there.
David Garrard, QB10/21/2013 9:40:00 PM
Description: New York quarterback David Garrard has been activated from the team's exempt list.
Insight: It doesn't mean anything because Geno Smith is still the starter. Brady Quinn was released in the corresponding roster move. Garrard hasn't played an NFL snap since 2010.
Chris Ivory, RB10/20/2013 5:51:00 PM
Description: The Jets gave Chris Ivory 34 carries Sunday against the Patriots and the running back came away with 104 rushing yards.
Insight: According to Kimberly A. Martin of Newsday, coach Rex Ryan said Ivory had the "hot hand" so they stuck with him over Bilal Powell. If 3.1 ypc is considered hot, we don't want to know what cold is. Bilal Powell saw just three carries in the game. Neither player can be trusted in fantasy leagues.
Santonio Holmes, WR10/16/2013 7:09:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes (hamstring) didn't practice Wednesday and is not expected to play Sunday against the Patriots.
Insight: According to ESPNNY.com, Holmes has "little chance" to play Sunday. Tight end Jeff Cumberland has led the Jets in receiving yards in each of the last two weeks and with Holmes injured and Kellen Winslow suspended he has a good chance to do it again in Week 7.
Mike Goodson, RB10/14/2013 2:22:00 PM
Description: Jets halfback Mike Goodson suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Sunday's game against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Combined with his four-game suspension makes this a "lost" season for Goodson. Whether he'll make next season's roster is now up in the air.
Santonio Holmes, WR10/13/2013 11:48:00 AM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes is inactive for Week 6 against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Holmes (hamstring) had not been practicing during the week, so this should not surprise any fantasy owners. He's only been fantasy worthy in one of the first four weeks.
Antonio Cromartie, DB10/12/2013 2:50:00 PM
Description: Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie (knee) is expected to play Sunday against the Steelers, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Insight: Cromartie suffered a non-contact knee injury in practice Thursday but it turns out he only hyperextended it. Fantasy owners shouldn't shy away from using Antonio Brown Sunday.
Kellen Winslow, TE10/11/2013 4:25:00 PM
Description: Jets tight end Kellen Winslow was suspended for four games for violating the league's policy against PEDs.
Insight: Winslow has caught 17 balls for 169 yards and a pair of scores, but his only double-digit performance came in Week 1 against Tampa Bay. This suspension isn't likely to change any fantasy lineups.
Antonio Cromartie, DB10/10/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie reportedly suffered a non-contact knee injury in practice Thursday and was taken for an MRI. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPNNY.com
Insight: The team is concerned, Cimini reports. Cromartie is one of the top shutdown corners in the league so any fantasy value that the Jets defense has would be lost if he's out. Dee Milliner (hamstring) is also out, so Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger could be throwing on Kyle Wilson, Darrin Walls and Isaiah Trufant Sunday afternoon.
David Garrard, QB10/10/2013 2:36:00 PM
Description: Quarterback David Garrard has come out of retirement to join the Jets.
Insight: Garrard was put on New York's exempt list so he technically isn't on the active roster. With Geno Smith finally beginning to turn things around, Garrard figures only to be a backup when and if he's activated.
Zach Sudfeld, TE10/4/2013 8:52:00 PM
Description: The Jets have picked up Zach Sudfeld, who was waived by the Patriots on Thursday.
Insight: Sudfeld's ADP soared after he was impressive during training camp and the preseason, but he failed to make an impact when the season started. He isn't on the fantasy radar at the moment, though he certainly could emerge as an option at tight end for the Jets later this season.
Santonio Holmes, WR10/1/2013 12:06:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes, who left Sunday's game early in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury, is expected to miss a couple of weeks, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Insight: Holmes had a season-high 154 receiving yards in Week 3, but he managed just one catch, for 25 yards Sunday against the Titans. The Jets will sign David Nelson for depth.
Mark Sanchez, QB9/30/2013 10:49:00 PM
Description: New York quarterback Mark Sanchez will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL.com
Insight: The expected recovery timetable is 4-to-6 months. In all likelihood, Sanchez has played his final down of football as a New York Jet.
Santonio Holmes, WR9/29/2013 7:02:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes left Sunday's game early in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury.
Insight: Holmes had a season-high 154 receiving yards in Week 3 but he managed just one catch for 25 yards Sunday against the Titans.
Chris Ivory, RB9/29/2013 3:04:00 PM
Description: Jets running back Chris Ivory (hamstring) will miss Sunday's game with Tennessee.
Insight: Ivory pulled his hamstring in the win over Buffalo. Bilal Powell broke out with 149 yards on 27 carries against the Bills and will be the workhorse back in Week 4.
Chris Ivory, RB9/26/2013 3:36:00 PM
Description: Injured Jets running back Chris Ivory (hamstring) missed practice again Thursday, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Insight: Ivory pulled his hamstring in last Sunday's win over Buffalo and is doubtful for Week 4 against the Titans. Bilal Powell broke out with 149 yards on 27 carries against the Bills and has 226 yards and a touchdown on 52 carries this season. Powell is a lock for 20 touches Sunday and should be started in most fantasy leagues.
Santonio Holmes, WR9/26/2013 11:45:00 AM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes (foot) maintains that he's still not 100 percent healthy. SOURCE: NY Daily News
Insight: Holmes missed most of 2012 with a Lisfranc injury in his left foot and said he's not fully healthy even after producing a season-high 154 receiving yards Sunday against the Bills. "I still have a long way to go," Holmes said. In Week 4, the Jets play the Titans, who gave up 33 catches, 392 yards and two touchdowns to opposing receivers in the first two games before holding San Diego receivers to five catches for 41 yards in Week 3. Holmes is a risky WR3 in 10-team leagues but 12-team owners should consider him in Week 4.
Chris Ivory, RB9/25/2013 4:28:00 PM
Description: Injured Jets running back Chris Ivory did not practice on Wednesday and his chances of playing against Tennessee continue to shrink.
Insight: Ivory pulled his hamstring in last Sunday's win over Buffalo. Most expected Ivory to be the Jets' lead back this season but so far he's been outplayed by Bilal Powell (226 yards).
Chris Ivory, RB9/23/2013 8:21:00 PM
Description: Injured Jets running back Chris Ivory probably won't be ready for next week's game against Tennessee. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: Ivory pulled his hamstring in Sunday's win over Buffalo. Most expected Ivory to be the Jets' lead back this season but so far he's been outplayed by Bilal Powell (226 yards).
Bilal Powell, RB9/18/2013 2:59:00 PM
Description: Jets running back Bilal Powell missed Wednesday's practice due to illness.
Insight: This shouldn't effect his availability for Sunday. He's a low-end value at best while sharing time with Chris Ivory.
Matt Simms, QB9/16/2013 9:37:00 PM
Description: Matt Simms could be an option for the Jets at quarterback should Geno Smith continue to struggle. SOURCE: ESPN New York
Insight: Smith looked terrible against New England and it could be just a matter of a time before he plays himself out of the starting job. Simms has never played in an NFL game so it's difficult to judge his fantasy value.
Mark Sanchez, QB9/14/2013 9:18:00 PM
Description: The Jets have placed quarterback Mark Sanchez on the injured reserve/designated to return list. SOURCE: Albert Breer, NFL.com
Insight: That makes him eligible to return in Week 12. Sanchez has been battling shoulder issues. With Sanchez set to become a free agent after the season, it's possible that he's played his final game as a New York Jet.
Mark Sanchez, QB9/13/2013 8:34:00 PM
Description: Reports surfaced earlier this week that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez would need surgery on his injured shoulder but now his doctors don't think surgery will be necessary. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: Rex Ryan told the media Friday that Sanchez is still hoping to play this season. His replacement, Geno Smith, struggled mightily in a loss to the Patriots on Thursday night (15-for-35 passing, 214 yards, no touchdowns, three interceptions).
Jeremy Kerley, WR9/12/2013 7:56:00 PM
Description: As expected, New York wideout Jeremy Kerley won't be available for Thursday's game against New England.
Insight: He suffered a concussion in Week 1. Kerley only had three catches in the opener (45 receiving yards).
Santonio Holmes, WR9/11/2013 3:15:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes was limited in Wednesday's practice, but should be ready for Thursday's game with New England
Insight: Holmes hasn't produced a 1,000-yard receiving season since 2009 and caught just one ball for 13 yards in Week 1. With Jeremy Kerley (concussion) likely sidelined, he should be a better option in Week 2.
Kellen Winslow, TE9/11/2013 3:12:00 PM
Description: Jets tight end Kellen Winslow was limited in participation in Wednesday's practice.
Insight: Given hius injury history, that's to be expected. Winslow had 79 yards and a touchdown on seven catches Sunday against the Bills. He should see consistent targets from Smith and is a decent option in two-TE leagues.
Jeremy Kerley, WR9/9/2013 7:04:00 PM
Description: Jets receiver Jeremy Kerley has been diagnosed with a concussion. SOURCE: ESPN New York
Insight: With the quick turnaround this week (the Jets play New England on Thursday), he'll only have a few days to recover. Kerley was targeted four times Sunday against the Buccaneers.
Kellen Winslow, TE9/8/2013 6:17:00 PM
Description: Jets tight end Kellen Winslow had 79 yards and a touchdown on seven catches Sunday against the Bills.
Insight: Rookie QB Geno Smith looked his way eight times, second on the team to Stephen Hill's nine. The oft-injured tight end had just one catch for 12 yards last season after catching 75 for 763 in 2011. He should see consistent targets from Smith and is a decent option in two-TE leagues.
Jeremy Kerley, WR9/8/2013 2:45:00 PM
Description: New York wideout Jeremy Kerley left the Jets-Bucs season opener in the second quarter with a head injury and will go to the locker room for concussion tests.
Insight: Kerley caught three balls for 45 yards in the first half.
Mark Sanchez, QB9/8/2013 12:56:00 PM
Description: Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez may have a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.
Insight: The injury could be season-ending. Sanchez will go for a second opinion later this week. Geno Smith should have the starting job all to himself while he's out.
Chris Ivory, RB9/6/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Running backs coach Anthony Lynn said that Chris Ivory will get the goal line carries, according to a New York Daily News report.
Insight: If Ivory can stay healthy this season, there are plenty of questions in this area including a hamstring injury in the preseason, there are at least 250 carries with his name on them. If they include the goal line work he could be a viable RB2.
Santonio Holmes, WR9/5/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes will be active for Sunday's season opener against Tampa Bay, though ESPN New York reporter Rich Cimini says that he'll be used in a limited capacity.
Insight: That means he's probably not worth starting. Holmes hasn't produced a 1,000-yard receiving season since 2009, his last year in Pittsburgh. With Geno Smith under center, Holmes is even less appealing than usual this season.
Bilal Powell, RB9/4/2013 5:56:00 PM
Description: According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, Jets coach Rex Ryan said that Bilal Powell "earned the right to start" Week 1 but added that Chris Ivory will get "substantial work."
Insight: Ivory is the better player but he missed significant time in training camp due to a hamstring injury. The Jets will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had the No. 1 rush defense in the NFL last season, so fantasy owners should stay away from this situation.
Geno Smith, QB9/4/2013 10:33:00 AM
Description: The Geno Smith Era has officially begun in East Rutherford. The Jets have announced that he'll be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback.
Insight: He'll face the Buccaneers in the season opener. Tampa's defense struggled mightily last season but with newcomers Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson anchoring the secondary, this could be a difficult matchup for the former West Virginia Mountaineer. Smith finished the preseason with a 54.6 QB rating on 37 pass attempts.
Mark Sanchez, QB9/4/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Mark Sanchez's shoulder injury will keep him on the shelf until at least Week 3. SOURCE: New York Post
Insight: ESPN's Ed Werder has already heard rumblings that Sanchez could be headed for injured reserve. Geno Smith's job is safe for now.
Brady Quinn, QB9/2/2013 1:07:00 PM
Description: The Jets signed quarterback Brady Quinn on Monday.
Insight: Graham Harrell was dropped in the corresponding roster move. Quinn was one of Seattle's final cuts on Saturday. He's unlikely to help the Jets or any fantasy teams in 2013.
Alex Green, RB9/1/2013 8:37:00 PM
Description: The Jets claimed running back Alex Green off waivers on Sunday. SOURCE: Michael Hoffman, Premier Sports and Entertainment
Insight: The Packers cut him loose about 24 hours earlier. He'll function as a change of pace option behind starter Chris Ivory.
Mike Goodson, RB8/26/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: The NFL has slapped Jets halfback Mike Goodson with a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Insight: He's been absent for all of training camp though ESPN's Adam Schefter is hearing that Goodson will arrive at Jets camp sometime within the next 24 hours. Goodson racked up 221 yards on just 35 carries last year with Oakland. He'll be eligible to return October 7th against the Falcons.
Joe McKnight, RB8/26/2013 12:16:00 PM
Description: Running back Joe McKnight has been released by the Jets in advance of Tuesday's cutdown day.
Insight: McKnight had fallen behind Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Mike Goodson on the depth chart. Expect him to be picked up by another team because he can play special teams.
Braylon Edwards, WR8/26/2013 12:09:00 PM
Description: Wide receiver Braylon Edwards has been released by the Jets.
Insight: Edwards hasn't held much fantasy value since his first stint with the Jets back in 2010. Santonio Holmes (if healthy) and Stephen Hill figure to get most of the targets but Edwards could have been a nice option near the goal line.
Mark Sanchez, QB8/25/2013 9:40:00 PM
Description: Mark Sanchez won't play in New York's preseason finale Thursday versus Philadelphia. SOURCE: Adam Schefter, ESPN
Insight: Sanchez bruised his shoulder in Saturday's win over the Giants. Despite a poor outing on Saturday, Geno Smith (three picks and a safety) has emerged as the frontrunner in the Jets starting quarterback battle.
Santonio Holmes, WR8/23/2013 9:19:00 PM
Description: New York receiver Santonio Holmes has been activated from the active/PUP list.
Insight: Holmes claims that his twice surgically-repaired foot is still bothering him but the Jets went ahead and activated him anyway. There doesn't appear to be a timetable for Holmes' return.
Geno Smith, QB8/22/2013 10:11:00 PM
Description: Jets rookie Geno Smith will have one last chance to prove himself Saturday against the Giants.
Insight: Smith missed last week's game against Jacksonville with a sprained ankle but he'll be the Jets' starter on Saturday. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News thinks Smith could win the starting job over Mark Sanchez if he plays well and doesn't commit any turnovers.
Mohamed Massaquoi, WR8/22/2013 9:59:00 PM
Description: The Jets signed former Browns wideout Mohamed Massaquoi on Thursday. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL Network
Insight: He was cut by Jacksonville earlier this preseason. Massaquoi's yardage total has fallen each of the last three seasons, which is pretty troubling when his career-high is only 624 yards. A turnaround is unlikely for Massaquoi in East Rutherford, especially with accuracy-challenged Mark Sanchez throwing him the football.
Santonio Holmes, WR8/22/2013 12:35:00 PM
Description: According to a source of the New York Post, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes (foot) has received medical clearance to begin football activities but is resisting.
Insight: The Jets haven't officially cleared Holmes, but the Post reports that "many people around the team believe the mercurial wide receiver is just trying to avoid training camp and he is healthier than he is letting on." Holmes says he cannot run routes yet and still feels pain every day when he wakes up, 11 months since suffering a Lisfranc injury that led to two surgeries. The team signed former Browns underachiever Mohamed Massaquoi Thursday.
Mark Sanchez, QB8/18/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: New York quarterback Mark Sanchez had a shaky performance in Saturday's preseason game against Jacksonville.
Insight: Sanchez played three quarters, which is rare to see in the exhibition season, completing 13-of-23 passes for 165 yards, a touchdown and one interception. He also ran the ball twice for five yards. A solid outing probably would have cemented Sanchez's place as the starter but after the game Rex Ryan seemed noncommittal about either Jets quarterback (Geno Smith missed Saturday's game with a sprained ankle). Sanchez will have another chance to distance himself from Smith next week against the Giants.
Mark Sanchez, QB8/15/2013 1:34:00 PM
Description: The Jets announced Thursday that QB Mark Sanchez will start the second preseason game Saturday against the Jaguars.
Insight: Geno Smith was expected to draw the start after Sanchez started the first preseason game, but the rookie is dealing with an ankle sprain and put on a performance in practice Wednesday that coach Rex Ryan called "brutal." On his first series of the preseason Sanchez threw an ugly pick-six to lineman Ziggy Ansah, but he finished 10-of-13 for 125 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Geno Smith, QBCold8/14/2013 6:29:00 PM
Description: Jets coach Rex Ryan said quarterback Geno Smith was "brutal" in Wednesday's practice. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: "That was Geno's worst day, obviously," Ryan said to reporters after practice. "We've seen guys have bad days, but this was a really bad day." Smith threw three interceptions on Wednesday, which Ryan remarked as "way too many." Ryan hinted that Smith's sprained ankle could be what's causing him to struggle. It's looking more and more like Mark Sanchez will win the Jets' starting quarterback job.
Antonio Cromartie, DB8/12/2013 1:36:00 PM
Description: Jets CB Antonio Cromartie injured his elbow in practice Monday.
Insight: Cromartie has 25 career interceptions and he and the rest of the Jets defense will have to play at peek efficiency this season given the weakness on the other side of the ball.
Geno Smith, QB8/11/2013 3:55:00 PM
Description: New York quarterback Geno Smith was back at practice on Sunday. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: Smith sprained his ankle Friday night against the Lions. He's neck and neck with Mark Sanchez in the Jets' starting quarterback battle.
Santonio Holmes, WR8/11/2013 3:00:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN New York, the Jets aren't sure if Santonio Holmes is milking his injury to protect his self interests or if he really is still injured.
Insight: With a $10.75 million cap number in 2014, Holmes is all but guaranteed to be released after this season. It is in his best interest to make sure his Lisfranc injury is fully healed before returning to the field so he doesn't go into next year's offseason with another medical issue.
Chris Ivory, RB8/11/2013 2:47:00 PM
Description: According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets running back Chris Ivory (hamstring) participated in individual drills Sunday.
Insight: Ivory has yet to complete a full practice due to a hamstring injury, which isn't a good sign for a running back that is considered injury-prone, but at least he's making progress in his recovery. If Ivory can stay healthy this season, there are at least 250 carries with his name on them.
Geno Smith, QB8/10/2013 9:52:00 PM
Description: Jets rookie QB Geno Smith is not expected to miss much time with a mild ankle sprain, according to ESPN New York.
Insight: Smith, who is competing with incumbent Mark Sanchez for the starting job, suffered the injury during New York's preseason opener Friday. He went 6-of-7 for 47 yards in the game.
Geno Smith, QB8/9/2013 10:47:00 PM
Description: Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith suffered an ankle injury during Friday night's preseason opener against the Lions.
Insight: He had been 6-for-7 with 47 yards passing before the injury. It looked pretty minor and we're guessing the Jets took him out just as a precaution. Meanwhile, Mark Sanchez, the other Jets quarterback, went 10-for-13 with a touchdown and a pick. This quarterback battle isn't close to being over yet.
Stephen Hill, WR8/7/2013 8:56:00 PM
Description: According to Rich Cimini of ESPNNY.com, Jets receiver Stephen Hill is "the most improved player on the team."
Insight: The 6-foot-4 Hill entered the league as a raw 21-year-old with a 40-yard dash time of 4.36 seconds. He's now 22 and has impressed with improved mechanics and route running, according to Cimini. With Santonio Holmes (foot) questionable for Week 1, Hill could emerge as the No. 1 receiver, but that might not mean much with Mark Sanchez at quarterback.
Dee Milliner, CB8/7/2013 2:20:00 PM
Description: Jets cornerback Dee Milliner left practice with a leg injury, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Insight: Coach Rex Ryan didn't think it was serious. Milliner, the team's first-round pick, is battling for a starting spot and any reduction in reps won't help his chances.
Chris Ivory, RB8/6/2013 10:54:00 PM
Description: According to the New York Daily News, Jets running back Chris Ivory (hamstring) said he "definitely" will be "full speed" by next Tuesday.
Insight: Ivory has yet to complete a full practice due to a hamstring injury, which isn't a good sign for a running back that is considered injury-prone. If Ivory can stay healthy this season, there are at least 250 carries with his name on them.
Santonio Holmes, WR8/5/2013 12:35:00 PM
Description: According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes told friends he would "miss at least four games" with a continuing foot injury suffered last September.
Insight: Previously Holmes had said he would be ready for Week 1 so this isn't encouraging news. Holmes continues to work his way back from a Lisfranc injury. Even if the receiver does play this season, he won't be a good fantasy option given the shaky QB situation in New York.
Geno Smith, QB7/31/2013 9:09:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Geno Smith has jumped out to an early lead in the Jets' starting quarterback competition.
Insight: This comes just days after NFL Network's Brian Baldinger said Smith's conditioning was "embarrassing." If Geno gets the job it won't be because he deserved it. It will be because Mark Sanchez deserved it less.
Chris Ivory, RB7/31/2013 4:25:00 PM
Description: According to ESPNNY.com, the Jets are likely going to have a committee backfield but are privately hoping that Chris Ivory will become a 15-carry per game back.
Insight: ESPNNY.com also said earlier this month that the Jets view Ivory as a "poor man's" Marshawn Lynch. Ivory was frequently banged up during his time with the Saints but also had to compete for carries with three or four other talented backs at all times in a pass-heavy offense. With only Bilal Powell, Joe McKnight and Mike Goodson (if he ever shows up to training camp) to beat out, Ivory should emerge as the No. 1 back on the team if he can stay healthy. Remember, the New York Jets handed Shonn Greene 276 carries last year.
Santonio Holmes, WR7/26/2013 3:39:00 PM
Description: When asked if he would play this season, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes declined to answer, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Insight: Previously Holmes had said he would be ready for Week 1 so this isn't encouraging news. Holmes continues to work his way back from a Lisfranc injury. Even if the receiver does play this season, he won't be a good fantasy option given the shaky QB situation in New York.
Braylon Edwards, WR7/24/2013 3:00:00 PM
Description: Receiver Braylon Edwards is expected to re-sign with the Jets as long as he can pass his physical.
Insight: Edwards hasn't held much fantasy value since his first stint with the Jets back in 2010. Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill figure get most of the targets, but Edwards is a nice option near the goal line.
Chaz Schilens, WR7/24/2013 2:55:00 PM
Description: Wideout Chaz Schilens signed with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday.
Insight: The oft-injured Schilens is obviously insurance just in case Nate Burleson (leg) and Ryan Broyles (knee) aren't ready to go. The team is also expected to work out Laurent Robinson.
Santonio Holmes, WR7/20/2013 7:54:00 PM
Description: New York receiver Santonio Holmes insists that he'll be ready for Week 1 against the Buccaneers. SOURCE: Rich Cimini, ESPN New York
Insight: Holmes continues to work his way back from a Lisfranc injury. Even if Holmes is ready for the start of the season, the Jets' shaky quarterback situation makes him a risky fantasy pick.
Santonio Holmes, WR7/17/2013 1:14:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN New York, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes will begin training camp on the active/physically unable to perfom list.
Insight: If he had been placed on the reserve/PUP list, Holmes would have had to miss the first six games of the regular season. Holmes suffered a season-ending foot injury in 2012 and he still hasn't fully recovered. Once a fantasy mainstay, Holmes is now a late-round pick at best.
Chris Ivory, RB7/16/2013 10:42:00 PM
Description: According to ESPNNY.com, the Jets view Chris Ivory as a poor man's Marshawn Lynch.
Insight: Ivory caused 12 missed tackles on just 40 rushing attempts, which nearly equaled former New York running back Shonn Greene's total of 15 on 276 attempts, according to Pro Football Focus. Ivory will have to stay healthy, but if he does he's going to get a ton of touches this season.
Geno Smith, QB7/15/2013 12:58:00 PM
Description: Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith could still get on the field even if Mark Sanchez beats him out for the starting role, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.
Insight: The thought is they could put in a read-option set for Smith, but the Jets tried that with Tim Tebow last year and it didn't work. Fantasy owners need Smith to win the job outright for him to have any fantasy value.
Stephen Hill, WR7/13/2013 2:33:00 PM
Description: Jets No. 2 receiver Stephen Hill will be on a play/rep limit during training camp, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Insight: Hill and the Jets desparately need to avoid any setbacks from his surgically-repaired right knee because there are already questions as to whether No. 1 receiver Santonio Holmes (Lisfranc fracture) will be ready for Week 1. Add in questionable QB play and neither Hill or Holmes are an exciting fantasy value in 2013-14.
Mark Sanchez, QB7/10/2013 9:02:00 PM
Description: Jets QB Mark Sanchez is confident he'll win the team's starting quarterback job. SOURCE: ESPN New York
Insight: He better be. Sanchez was flat-out awful last season (66.9 QB rating) and rookie Geno Smith certainly isn't going to roll over for him. The five-year vet will have his work cut out for him in training camp.
Kellen Winslow, TE6/14/2013 8:34:00 PM
Description: Tight end Kellen Winslow has accepted a one-year contract offer from the New York Jets. SOURCE: NBC Sports
Insight: Rex Ryan has been incredibly disappointed with the performance of his tight ends and wide receivers in mini camp and OTAs, citing dropped passes as his primary frustration. If there's one thing the veteran Winslow can do, it's catch passes. In 93 career games, Winslow has 438 grabs for 4,848 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Winslow open the year as New York's starting tight end.
Santonio Holmes, WR6/13/2013 2:11:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes still isn't running or cutting, according to ESPNNY.com.
Insight: Holmes is still rehabbing from the Lisfranc injury he suffered last season and is uncertain for Week 1. Even if he is healthy, the Jets' uncertain QB situation makes him an unattractive fantasy option.
Mike Goodson, RB6/7/2013 3:00:00 PM
Description: Jets running back Mike Goodson could avoid gun charges if the report from Mike Garafolo of USA Today is correct that the driver of the car has claimed ownership of the gun.
Insight: Goodson still has to deal with drug charges, but the chances are he'll return to the field a lot sooner now without the gun charges in addition. Chris Ivory appears to be the early favorite for starting role with Goodson as his backup.
Santonio Holmes, WR6/5/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Jets wideout Santonio Holmes might start the season on the physically unable to perform list. SOURCE: Manish Mehta, New York Daily News
Insight: He's still coming back from a Lisfranc injury that he suffered about halfway through last season. The Jets will have to lean more on Jeremy Kerley and tight end Jeff Cumberland if Holmes and Stephen Hill (knee surgery) are unavailable early in the season.
Mike Goodson, RB5/28/2013 8:15:00 PM
Description: According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets running back Mike Goodson returned to practice Tuesday. Goodson was arrested on weapon and drug charges earlier this month and pled not guilty last week.
Insight: Goodson's attorney said that the legal proceedings could go on for months, but Goodson should be able to practice through the process. That leaves him in the running back mix along with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. Ivory seemingly is in the lead, however.
Chris Ivory, RB5/23/2013 6:59:00 PM
Description: With Mike Goodson's future up in the air, Chris Ivory doesn't have much competition to be the Jets' feature back, according to the New York Post.
Insight: Goodson was arrested last week on drugs and weapons charges, leaving just Ivory, Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight in the backfield, and new GM John Idzik has been trying to dump McKnight. Ivory showed flashes in limited playing time with New Orleans, averaging 5.1 yards per carry and scoring eight touchdowns on 256 carries in 24 career games.
Mike Goodson, RB5/17/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: USA Today's Mike Garafolo is reporting that Jets running back Mike Goodson was arrested early Friday morning on drug possession and weapons charges.
Insight: Goodson is in the mix with Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight to be the Jets' starting tailback in 2013. This arrest certainly won't help his chances.
David Garrard, QB5/15/2013 5:11:00 PM
Description: David Garrard has decided to retire due to a lingering knee injury, according to Adam Schein of SNY and NFL.com.
Insight: Garrard hasn't appeared in an NFL game since 2010. His retirement means that Mark Sanchez only has to beat out rookie Geno Smith to be the Jets' starting quarterback again.
Tim Tebow, QB5/9/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Tebow Mania won't be coming to New England according to Yahoo Sports.
Insight: Apparently head coach Bill Belichick "hates" Tebow as a player. That's pretty harsh. Tebow was let go recently by the Jets and hasn't drawn much interest from other teams. His best hope is to land a backup job before training camp starts in July.
Chris Ivory, RB4/27/2013 5:36:00 PM
Description: The Jets have inked running back Chris Ivory to a new three-year, $10 million contract. SOURCE: Manish Mehta, New York Daily News
Insight: The 25-year-old is New York's running back of the future. The Jets may have also found their quarterback of the future after taking Geno Smith with the 39th pick at Friday night's NFL Draft.
Chris Ivory, RB4/26/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: New Orleans traded running back Chris Ivory to the Jets for a fourth-round pick. SOURCE: Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports
Insight: We heard rumblings about an Ivory trade earlier in the week and now it looks like the deal has finally come to fruition. Ivory was never a fantasy-worthy back in New Orleans but we're expecting that to change now that he's part of a more run-oriented offense in New York.
Geno Smith, QB4/26/2013 8:29:00 PM
Description: The Jets snagged West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith with the seventh pick of the second round (39th overall).
Insight: ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter suggested that this move could represent the end of the Mark Sanchez Era in New York. With Smith, Sanchez, David Garrard and Tim Tebow all on the Jets' roster, head coach Rex Ryan will have a big decision to make later this offseason. We're guessing the rookie Smith will be under center for New York's Week 1 matchup with Tampa Bay.
Darrelle Revis, CB4/21/2013 1:55:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN, the Jets have a deal in place to send Darrell Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Insight: The trade is pending a physical, and is reported to include the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Tampa Bay and New York have been discussing a Revis trade for months, but the Bucs' unwillingness to part with that draft choice had been holding up the deal. With Revis and Dashon Goldson in place, Tampa Bay potentially will have a game-changing pass defense to combat the likes of Roddy White, Julio Jones, Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston and Steve Smith.
