Flyers give Giroux eight-year extension
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers and captain Claude Giroux have officially agreed to an eight-year contract extension.
The deal is reportedly worth $66.2 million over the length of the contract.
It is set to kick in at the start of the 2014-15 season, as Giroux will finish out the final year of a three-year deal he signed in 2010 in the upcoming campaign.
"We are pleased to announce that we have agreed to an eight year contract extension with Claude Giroux," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "Claude is a high-quality young man that over the past few years has blossomed into our best player and also one of the top players in the league. We look forward to more and better things to come from Claude over the next number of years as we try to achieve our goal of becoming a championship team."
Since making his debut in the 2007-08 season, the 25-year-old has become the star of the team and has totaled 91 goals and 199 assists over 333 games in six seasons.
The first-round draft pick (22nd overall) of the 2006 draft notched 13 goals and 35 assists in 48 games last season, but did finish minus-seven and missed the postseason for the first time since joining the team full-time.
