Pelicans' Davis drafted first for Rising Stars Challenge
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis was drafted first overall in Thursday's fantasy-style draft to decide the rosters for the 2014 Rising Stars Challenge, part of the NBA's All-Star weekend in New Orleans.
Former NBA stars Chris Webber and Grant Hill were selected as general managers for the game, which features the top rookies and second-year players putting their talents on display. The game will be played on Feb. 14, two days prior to the All-Star Game at New Orleans Arena.
Webber was awarded the first pick and selected Davis, while Hill got the next two choices and picked Portland's Damian Lillard and Washington's Bradley Beal.
The rest of Team Webber consists of rookies Michael Carter-Williams of the 76ers, Tim Hardaway, Jr. of the Knicks, Trey Burke of the Jazz, Mason Plumlee of the Nets, Victor Oladipo of the Magic, Steven Adams of the Thunder, and Kelly Olynyk of the Celtics. Davis and Boston's Jared Sullinger are the only second-year players on Team Webber.
Team Hill, on other hand, has a bevy of experience, with sophomores Andre Drummond of the Pistons, Harrison Barnes of the Warriors, Terrence Jones of the Rockets, Jonas Valanciunas of the Raptors, and Dion Waiters of the Cavaliers joining rookies Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks and Pero Antic of the Hawks.
The head coaches for both teams will be the lead assistant coaches from the 2014 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs. Frank Vogel and his Indiana Pacers staff have secured the honors in the East, while Scott Brooks and his Oklahoma City Thunder staff earned the honors in the West.
