Stanton homers, Marlins pound Angels

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton belted a three-run homer and the Marlins supported Jarred Cosart with plenty of offense to beat the Angels, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game set.

Christian Yelich went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI singles for Miami, which snapped a two-game skid. Donovan Solano and Reed Johnson each had a pair of hits and scored twice.

Miami, which evened its record (65-65), is three games behind San Francisco for the second wild card spot.

Cosart (2-1), in his fourth start since being traded from Houston, gave up a run on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Wade LeBlanc (0-1), a left-hander who played for the Marlins during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, made his first major league start of 2014, but was hammered for seven hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

The Angels fell into a tie with Oakland for first in the AL West. The Athletics won at Houston Monday night.

Kole Calhoun doubled in the only run for the Angels in the eighth inning.

Before that, the Marlins built their lead by scoring three times in the third and four more in the fourth. Yelich singled to center to plate Solano in the third. Stanton was walked to fill the bases later in the frame and Marcell Ozuna made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right. Casey McGehee singled in Yelich.

Solano doubled and Johnson singled ahead of Yelich's RBI base hit to left in the fourth. Stanton homered for the National League-leading 33rd time, a blast to left-center off Cory Rasmus.

Game Notes

Angels shortstop Erick Aybar went 3-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... The Marlins went 5-for-13 with men in scoring position ... The Angels lost for the third time in four games.
