Ortiz, Red Sox agree to extension

Fort Myers, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox and reigning World Series MVP David Ortiz have agreed to a one-year contract extension for the 2015 season.

According to multiple outlets Sunday, the new pact is worth $16 million and includes a club/vesting option for 2016 and a club option for 2017.

"With this agreement, we have near certainty that David Ortiz will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform, which is something we have all wanted and that we are all proud of," said principal owner John Henry. "It is difficult to describe David's contributions to our city both on the field and off the field, and we are so proud to have this ambassador of our game with us as he continues on this road to Cooperstown."

The jovial 38-year-old native of the Dominican Republic hit .309 with 30 home runs, 38 doubles and 103 RBI over 137 regular-season games for the AL East champions in 2013.

He followed up by collecting 18 hits in 51 at-bats during the postseason, including a scorching .688 average (11-for-16) with two homers and six RBI along with eight walks in a six-game triumph against the St. Louis Cardinals.

A nine-time All-Star selection with the BoSox, Ortiz is a lifetime .287 hitter who has launched 431 homers and collected 520 doubles while driving in 1,429 runs over his 17-year major-league career.
