Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester has officially been scratched from Wednesday\'s start due to ongoing trade discussions, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. Brandon Workman will start in his place.
Insight: Rob Bradford of WEEI reports that Lester could be traded as soon as Tuesday night. Lester (10-7, 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 149 Ks) has picked a great time to have his best season, as the 30-year-old will be a free agent at season\'s end. Even if he\'s traded before the deadline he\'s made it known he\'s willing to rejoin the Red Sox.
Description: According to ProFootballTalk.com\'s Mike Florio, Browns receiver Josh Gordon has passed at least 70 drug tests and one test, the one that has him facing a one-year suspension, barely generated a positive. The one test would have been a negative if his urine samples were organized differently.
Insight: Urine samples are radomly split into two bottles, an "A" and a "B." If the "A" bottle is positive, the "B" is tested. The substance abuse policy states that the "\'B\' bottle Test need only show that the substance, revealed in the \'A\' bottle Test, is evident to the \'limits of detection\' to confirm the results of the \'A\' bottle Test." Gordon\'s "A" bottle showed a concentration just one nanogram per milliliter above the limit while the "B" bottle was below the threshold. If the "B" was tested first, the "A" wouldn\'t have ever been tested because the "B" bottle would have counted as negative. Gordon may have a shot to get his one-year suspension reduced, especially because the NFL is taking heat for giving Ray Rice just two games for domestic violence, but he likely will get a minimum of eight games because he\'s failed to stay out of trouble in the past few months. His appeal will be heard on Aug. 1.
Description: Atlanta running back Steven Jackson suffered a left hamstring injury Monday, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com.
Insight: It isn\'t the same hamstring that Jackson strained last season. Falcons coach Mike Smith said he\'s fully confident Jackson will be ready for Week 1, but the injury is a reminder that Jackson isn\'t getting any younger. The 31-year-old missed four games last year and rushed for just 3.5 ypc. Rookie Devonta Freeman has a good chance to start at some point this season.
Description: Syracuse coach and Team USA assistant coach Jim Boeheim said Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has been "the most impressive guy" at Team USA\'s training camp, according to ESPNChicago.com.
Insight: Rose missed most of last season with a torn meniscus after sitting out all of the previous season while recovering from a torn ACL. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, another Team USA assistant, also praised Rose. "The same (speed and explosiveness). The strength in his leg is great. His explosion is back. That\'s all there," Thibodeau said.
Description: Spurs guard Manu Ginobili (stress fracture in his right leg) has apparently not been granted permission by the Spurs to play in the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.
Insight: Ginobili wanted to play for his country in the World Cup, but only if healthy. After a long and successful playoff run, it\'s not surprising that the team wanted the 37-year-old to rest as much as possible in the offseason.
