Arizona Diamondbacks Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Archie Bradley, SP4/15/2014 12:16:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers reiterated that top pitching prospect Archie Bradley (RHP) will not be rushed to the majors.
Insight: Though fantasy owners, Bradley's agent and Diamondbacks fans want him up with the big club, the GM is resisting at this time. Still, figure him to be in the Arizona starting rotation by June 1 after 2014 free agency and Super Two dates have been passed. If you have room we still recommend stashing him.
Cody Ross, LF4/14/2014 8:47:00 PM
Description: According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (hip) is targeting Friday for his return.
Insight: Ross had surgery for a dislocated hip last August. He didn't do anything special prior to the injury and finished with a .278 average, eight homers, 38 RBI and a .745 OPS in 317 at-bats.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold4/14/2014 8:43:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have demoted Trevor Cahill to the bullpen, the team announced via Twitter.
Insight: Cahill has a dreadful 9.17 ERA and a 2.15 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings this season (four starts). Mike Bolsinger, who has a 3.31 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in 385 2/3 minor league innings but hasn't pitched in the majors, will take his spot in the rotation.
Mark Trumbo, LFHot4/13/2014 11:15:00 PM
Description: Arizona left fielder Mark Trumbo cracked another homer Sunday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Trumbo has the most home runs and RBI in the majors with six and 18, respectively.
Martin Prado, 3B4/13/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado (rest) is not in the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Prado got off to a 3-for-25 (.120) start, but he has gone 12-for-31 (.387) with two doubles over his last eight games.
Miguel Montero, C4/13/2014 3:51:00 PM
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero will get a day off Sunday.
Insight: Tuffy Gosewisch is catching Trevor Cahill. Montero is hitting .234 with one homer and five RBI after a down year in 2013 (.230, 11 HR, 42 RBI). He hit .283 with an .817 OPS and an average of 14 homers per season from 2009-12.
Archie Bradley, SP4/11/2014 2:21:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks top pitching prospect Archie Bradley (RHP) had a strong first outing for Reno, going five innings without yielding a run on four hits.
Insight: Bradley, MLB.com's No. 5 prospect in baseball, had a 1.84 ERA in 152 innings last season (123 1/3 at Double-A, 28 2/3 at Single-A Advanced). He should be up right after the super-two date and fantasy owners should be prepared to jump on this talented right-hander.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot4/11/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is a career .500 hitter (8-for-16) versus Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: It's not quite as good as his numbers against Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum, but its still pretty nice. He's a must start.
Aaron Hill, 2B4/10/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: D'Backs second baseman Aaron Hill is a must start on Thursday against Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong.
Insight: Hill is 9-for-16 (.563) with a 1.424 OPS in their matchups. Hill didn't start on Wednesday, but did knock out a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning.
Josh Collmenter, SP4/9/2014 9:13:00 PM
Description: According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks are preparing Josh Collmenter to move into the rotation.
Insight: D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson mentioned Trevor Cahill and Randall Delgado as possibilities to move to the bullpen, though he said both will make their next scheduled starts. Collmenter is 13-12 with a 4.03 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and 137 Ks in 196 2/3 career innings as a starter, compared to 7-6 with a 2.56 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and 129 Ks in 144 innings in relief. Eventually, prospect Archie Bradley will take that available spot in the Arizona rotation, so Collmenter is only an option in NL-only leagues.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold4/8/2014 8:05:00 PM
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill allowed five earned runs for the second time in three starts Tuesday at San Francisco.
Insight: Cahill has allowed 20 hits, walked eight and given up 12 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings this season. He's scheduled to face the Dodgers his next time on the hill.
Mark Trumbo, LFHot4/6/2014 7:51:00 PM
Description: Arizona left fielder Mark Trumbo belted his league-leading fifth homer Sunday against Colorado.
Insight: He's homered in four straight games for the D-Backs. Through nine games, the former Angel is on pace for 234 RBI this season.
Cody Ross, LF4/6/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: According to the Arizona Republic, Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (hip) is 7-10 days away from returning.
Insight: Ross is currently on a rehab assignment in Triple-A Reno. "He's been swinging the bat well all spring," GM Kevin Towers said. "The key thing for him is how he feels when he goes out there and has to play on back-to-back days, nine innings in the outfield." Mark Trumbo plays every day in left field, so Ross, Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock will have to split up starts at the other two outfield spots.
Martin Prado, 3B4/5/2014 4:43:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado left Friday's game with a lacerated left index finger but he's in the lineup Saturday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Prado is off to a 4-for-28 (.143) start. The utilityman hit just .238 with five home runs and a .623 OPS in his first 73 games last season, but he batted .322 with nine homers and an .862 OPS over his last 82 games.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B4/4/2014 9:54:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 26 straight games Friday in a loss to Colorado.
Insight: That's the longest active hitting streak in the major leagues. Goldschmidt (.414, 1 HR, 4 RBI) is four games away from tying Luis Gonzalez for the longest streak in team history.
Martin Prado, 3B4/4/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado is just 1-for-11 (.091) versus Rockies starter Juan Nicasio.
Insight: Prado is a fantasy favorite because of his versatility. He's eligible at 2B, 3B and outfield. At some point, however, he'll be dropped as the team's cleanup hitter for someone who can provide more protection for 1B Paul Goldschmidt. For now he's in a great spot, but should not be started on Friday in this unfavorable matchup.
Miguel Montero, C4/3/2014 1:26:00 PM
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero will get the afternoon off, just like his oppostite number, Buster Posey.
Insight: Normal day game after a night game stuff. He's been batting fifth in the Diamondbacks lineup with powerful Mark Trumbo behind him which should help him to approach his career RBI numbers this season.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B4/3/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt loves facing Giants starter Tim Lincecum.
Insight: He's a career .500 hitter with five homers and 11 RBI in just 20 at-bats. Goldy is batting .409 through his first five games.
Gerardo Parra, RF3/31/2014 2:24:00 PM
Description: Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra doesn't belong in any fantasy lineups Monday against the Giants.
Insight: That's because he only has one hit in 14 career at bats against Madison Bumgarner. With just 33 HR in 2,258 career at bats, Parra doesn't offer much in the way of fantasy value.
Miguel Montero, C3/31/2014 2:20:00 PM
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero is still trying to figure out how to hit against Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner.
Insight: Montero owns a .185 career average versus Bumgarner. He came away with two hits during the team's trip to Australia last weekend.
Randall Delgado, SP3/30/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Randall Delgado will serve as Arizona's fifth starter to begin the season.
Insight: Patrick Corbin's season-ending elbow injury helped Delgado win the spot behind Wade Miley, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and Bronson Arroyo. Delgado will need to pitch well to keep top prospect Archie Bradley from taking his job. He had a strong 1.78 BB/9 and a 1.19 WHIP last year but gave up 1.86 HR/9 and had a 4.26 ERA. He doesn't have much mixed league value.
Didi Gregorius, SS3/30/2014 3:06:00 AM
Description: D'Backs infielder Didi Gregorius is heading to the minors after losing the shortstop battle to Chris Owings.
Insight: Owings is the better hitter and it's possible the Diamondbacks will seek to trade Gregorious at this point. Gregorius went 0-for-4 during the team's recent trip to Australia.
David Hernandez, RP3/28/2014 12:44:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks RP David Hernandez has a torn ulnar collateral ligament, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: He'll see another doctor, but Tommy John surgery is on the horizon. Hernandez has saved 19 games over the past four seasons, but his value is mostly as a middle reliever and set-up guy.
Archie Bradley, SP3/27/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks assigned top prospect Archie Bradley (RHP) to the minors on Thursday, according to Zach Buchanan of azcentral.com.
Insight: Bradley, MLB.com's No. 5 prospect in baseball, had a 4.32 ERA in 8 1/3 innings this spring and should be up sooner than the team intended due to Patrick Corbin's season-ending elbow injury. The flamethrower had a 1.84 ERA in 152 innings last season (123 1/3 at Double-A, 28 2/3 at Single-A Advanced) and will try to master Triple-A for a month or so.
Patrick Corbin, SP3/25/2014 6:55:00 PM
Description: D'Backs starter Patrick Corbin had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. SOURCE: Steve Gilber, MLB.com
Insight: Obviously, he's done for the year. Corbin is still only 24 so this operation, though serious, shouldn't have too big an impact on his long term future. Wade Miley started in Corbin's place Saturday in the season opener.
Chris Owings, SS3/24/2014 2:08:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks appear to be shopping Didi Gregorius which would make Chris Owings the winner of the shortstop competition.
Insight: In Australia, each player got one start and came up hitless, but Owings seems to have more offensive ability than Gregorius.
Mark Trumbo, LF3/23/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Mark Trumbo hit his first home run with the team Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: The D'Backs acquired Trumbo from the Angels this offseason after he averaged .251, 32 homers, 94 RBI and 152 strikeouts the previous three years. He should challenge the 40-homer mark due to Chase Field's favorable conditions.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold3/23/2014 10:26:00 AM
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill gave up five earned runs, allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out just one over four innings Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Cahill has posted an ERA between 3.78 and 4.16 in each of the last three seasons, but he walks a lot of batters, leading to a high WHIP (career 1.33), and doesn't strike out many (career 5.9 K/9).
Martin Prado, 3B3/22/2014 9:53:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado batted cleanup in the season opener between Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo.
Insight: He went 0-for-4. I would not expect that to continue. Trumbo or Miguel Montero would be better options and provide more protection for fantasy MVP candidate Goldschmidt.
Patrick Corbin, SP3/16/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: Patrick Corbin's MRI revealed UCL damage in his left elbow. It sounds like he's going to need Tommy John surgery. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: If Corbin decides to undergo surgery, he'll miss the rest of the 2014 season and possibly part of next season as well. It's a massive blow to Arizona's playoff chances as Corbin (14-8, 3.41 ERA) was one of the best pitchers in the National League next season. Wade Miley has been informed that he'll be making the trip to Australia next week to pitch in Corbin's place.
Patrick Corbin, SP3/15/2014 7:28:00 PM
Description: Arizona Opening Day starter Patrick Corbin exited Saturday's spring training game mid at bat because of forearm stiffness. SOURCE: Jack Magruder, Fox Sports Arizona
Insight: Uh oh. That puts Corbin in doubt for next week's series in Australia. If he can't go, Wade Miley (10-10, 3.55 ERA) would likely get the Opening Day nod.
Trevor Cahill, SP3/13/2014 5:09:00 PM
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (knee) threw a bullpen session Thursday, just two days after suffering a jammed right knee, according to Steve Gilbert of mlb.com.
Insight: Cahill hurt himself while trying to avoid Cleveland's Jason Kipnis at first base during Tuesday's Cactus League start, but he should be fine. He went 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings last season and is a below-average fantasy option.
Trevor Cahill, SP3/11/2014 7:45:00 PM
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill suffered a jammed right knee Tuesday and is day-to-day, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Cahill hurt himself while trying to avoid Cleveland's Jason Kipnis at first base during Tuesday's Cactus League start. He went 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings last season and is a below-average fantasy option.
Trevor Cahill, SP3/11/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill left Tuesday's start with an apparent leg injury, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Cahill hurt himself while trying to avoid Cleveland's Jason Kipnis at first base. He went 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings last season and is a below-average fantasy option.
Bronson Arroyo, SP3/9/2014 2:50:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo (back) didn't feel good playing catch Saturday but feels much better Sunday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. He's hoping to pitch in a Cactus League game Friday.
Insight: This is new territory for Arroyo (14-12, 3.79 ERA for Cincinnati in 2013), who has never gone on the disabled list at any point in his 14 seasons in the league. The 37-year-old had an epidural last week for the bulging disc in his back.
Bronson Arroyo, SP3/7/2014 8:54:00 PM
Description: Arizona righthander Bronson Arroyo recently had an epidural to relieve some of his back pain. SOURCE: Jack Magruder, Fox Sports Arizona
Insight: This is new territory for Arroyo (14-12, 3.79 ERA for Cincinnati in 2013), who has never gone on the disabled list at any point in his 14 seasons in the league. He's still on track to make his first start of the regular season but fantasy owners should definitely keep an eye on his progress.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B3/7/2014 3:13:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has missed the past two spring training games due to "leg stiffness," according to beat writer Nick Piecoro.
Insight: We're talking about a guy who will cost you a top-five pick on draft day after batting .302 last season with 36 HR, 126 RBI and 15 steals., so we would like him to start the season healthy. It doesn't appear to be serious, but it's worth watching.
Bronson Arroyo, SP3/4/2014 5:44:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo was scratched Tuesday due to back stiffness, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: It probably isn't serious, but it is a reminder that Arroyo is now 37 years old. The right-hander has thrown 199 or more innings in nine straight seasons and posted an ERA from 3.74-3.88 in four of the last five.
Cody Ross, LF3/3/2014 9:19:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (hip) ran the bases Monday for the first time since he suffered a fractured and dislocated hip last August, according to mlb.com. He ran at 60-70 percent.
Insight: Ross will make his Cactus League debut on March 13, barring a setback. He'll begin simulated games Tuesday afternoon. Ross hit .278 with just eight homers in 94 games after blasting 22 homers, driving in 81 runs and putting up an .807 OPS in 130 games with Boston the year before. He's not worth a roster spot in most leagues.
Cody Ross, LF2/27/2014 8:55:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (hip) will make his Cactus League debut on March 13, barring a setback, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Ross dislocated his hip last August and had to undergo surgery. He hit .278 with just eight homers in 94 games after blasting 22 homers, driving in 81 runs and putting up an .807 OPS in 130 games with Boston the year before. He's not worth a roster spot in most leagues.
Didi Gregorius, SS2/10/2014 9:10:00 PM
Description: D'Backs infielder Didi Gregorius heads into spring training as the favorite to start at shortstop this season. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: Chris Owings will also be vying for the shortstop job, though Gregorius has more big league experience (111 games compared to just 20 for Owings). Gregorius wasn't anything spectacular last season (.252, 7 HR, 28 RBI in 103 games) but he's still only 23. He'll be worth monitoring throughout the season.
Bronson Arroyo, SP2/7/2014 8:02:00 PM
Description: Starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo has decided to join the Diamondbacks. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: His new deal will pay him $19 million over the next two seasons. While superstardom has eluded Arroyo, consistency hasn't. The lanky righthander has posted an ERA under 3.90 four of the last five seasons. He'll be worth owning in most leagues.
J.J. Putz, RP1/5/2014 10:16:00 PM
Description: Arizona is looking to trade righthanded reliever J.J. Putz. SOURCE: Fox Sports
Insight: Putz became expendable when the D'Backs acquired Addison Reed from the White Sox last month. The 36-year-old went 3-1 last season with six saves and a 2.36 ERA. Putz was an All-Star when he saved 40 games for the Mariners back in 2007.
Brad Ziegler, RP12/23/2013 4:09:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks inked closer Brad Ziegler to a two-year extension on Friday. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: He'll earn $4.5 million next season and another $5 million the following year. The deal includes a $5.5 million club option for 2016. Ziegler opened the year as a setup man but eventually became the team's closer when Heath Bell struggled. If Ziegler stays healthy, he should be good for 30+ saves in 2014.
Eric Chavez, 3B12/18/2013 4:33:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks were able to re-sign third baseman Eric Chavez on Wednesday. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: It's believed to be a one-year deal though terms of the contract haven't been released yet. Chavez was a trendy pick in fantasy leagues last season after batting .303 in the first half, though he only managed to hit .241 the rest of the way. We'd expect some regression in 2014.
Addison Reed, RP12/16/2013 2:55:00 PM
Description: Closer Addison Reed has been traded from the White Sox to Arizona for 3B Matt Davidson.
Insight: Reed (3.79 ERA, 1.107 WHIP, 40 SV) should be a solid fantasy contributor for the NL West contending Diamondbacks. The D'Backs didn't need Davidson with Martin Prado set to play the hot corner.
Daniel Hudson, SP12/13/2013 9:07:00 PM
Description: Righthander Daniel Hudson will stay with the Diamondbacks. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: They brought him back on a minor league deal. He's coming off Tommy John surgery and may not pitch next season. Hudson had his best year in 2011, going 16-12 with a 3.49 ERA in 33 starts.
Mark Trumbo, LF12/10/2013 8:46:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks acquired outfielder Mark Trumbo from the Angels on Tuesday.
Insight: Trumbo was the center piece of a three-team trade that saw the Angels get lefthanded starter Hector Santiago as well as top pitching prospect Tyler Skaggs. The White Sox received outfielder Adam Eaton as part of the swap. Trumbo hit just .234 last season and he could be a liability defensively. He's got great power though (34 HR, 100 RBI in 2013) and playing at hitter-friendly Chase Field should help his numbers.
Archie Bradley, SP11/12/2013 9:30:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said that pitching prospect Archie Bradley will come to spring training with a chance to make the 2014 rotation, according to Jon Morosi of foxsports.com.
Insight: Towers also said that Bradley will be able to throw at least 170 innings next season. The 21-year-old was selected seventh overall in the 2011 draft and went 14-5 with a 1.84 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 152 innings at two minor league stops last season. MLB.com ranks him as the seventh best prospect in the game.
Miguel Montero, C10/7/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: D'Backs catcher Miguel Montero had surgery on his finger over the weekend. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: He had an infection in his left index finger. Montero had a bit of a down season in 2013 with just 11 HR and a .230 batting average in 116 games. He'll be back in plenty of time for Spring Training.
Aaron Hill, 2B9/29/2013 10:52:00 AM
Description: D'Backs second baseman Aaron Hill won't need offseason surgery on his injured hand. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: Hill returned from a broken hand several months ago but admitted that it never fully healed. All things considered, Hill hasn't had a bad season (.293, 11 HR, 41 RBI in 86 appearances).
Aaron Hill, 2B9/28/2013 11:02:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill has a .318 average with four extra-base hits in 22 at-bats against Washington's Dan Haren, Saturday's scheduled starter.
Insight: After missing more than two months due to a broken hand, Hill has hit .292 with nine homers, 35 RBI, 40 runs and an .806 OPS in 76 games since returning from the disabled list.
Patrick Corbin, SP9/28/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin's ERA rose nearly a run in his last seven starts of the year.
Insight: Corbin was 13-3 with a 2.45 ERA on Aug. 20 but he imploded down the stretch, going 1-5 with an 8.00 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP in his final 36 innings to finish 14-8 with a 3.41 ERA.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot9/26/2013 12:29:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has hit safely in 15 straight games.
Insight: He has hit .417 with seven doubles, a triple, five homers, 17 RBI, 12 runs and two steals during the streak. With a .303 average, 36 home runs, 124 RBI, 102 runs, 15 steals and a .963 OPS, Goldschmidt is one of the NL's leading candidates for MVP.
Didi Gregorius, SS9/19/2013 10:39:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks rookie shortstop Didi Gregorius has faced Ricky Nolasco 11 times this season and picked up seven hits.
Insight: That's a .636 batting average. The rookie was hitting .322 on June 7 but has gone 37-for-169 (.219) since. He has little power and doesn't have a stolen base this year, but if you are looking for a one-day option Gregorius could be the ticket Thursday.
J.J. Putz, RP9/16/2013 6:38:00 PM
Description: D'Backs reliever J.J. Putz has been activated from the 15-day DL.
Insight: He missed about three weeks with a dislocated finger. The former closer will be used in a setup role for the duration of the 2013 season.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot9/16/2013 1:20:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is 6-for-11 (.545) versus Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: The Arizona first baseman went 4-for-4 with a homer and five RBI on Sunday and is now hitting .301 with 32 home runs, 114 RBI, 94 runs and a .948 OPS this season. He's one of the top candidates for NL MVP.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B9/15/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt drove in five runs Sunday against the Rockies.
Insight: The Arizona first baseman went 4-for-4 with a homer and is now hitting .301 with 32 home runs, 114 RBI, 94 runs and a .948 OPS this season. He's one of the top candidates for NL MVP.
Gerardo Parra, RF9/15/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is 3-for-21 (.143) against Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin.
Insight: Parra has had a similar season to last year, hitting .267 with a .727 OPS. However, despite getting 606 plate appearances and reaching base at a .326 clip, Parra has just 10 steals (10-for-20 on SBs). He stole 15 bases in 430 plate appearances last year. Sit him Sunday against Chacin.
J.J. Putz, RP9/15/2013 10:57:00 AM
Description: Arizona reliever J.J. Putz might be activated from the DL later this week. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: He dislocated his finger a few weeks ago while fielding a ground ball. Putz started the year as the Diamondbacks' closer but has since ceded that role to Brad Ziegler (8-1, 2.30 ERA, 10-for-12 in save opportunities).
Patrick Corbin, SP9/12/2013 11:10:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin stepped up with a second straight quality start Wednesday night.
Insight: He allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings and has a 2.51 ERA in his last two starts. The Diamondbacks were considering giving Corbin extra rest after he allowed 13 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, but he has remained on regular rest and turned things around lately. He's 14-6 with a 2.92 ERA in 197 innings this season.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B9/10/2013 12:04:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is 5-for-11 (.455) with a home run and four RBI versus Dodgers starter Ediunson Volquez.
Insight: The Arizona first baseman is having an MVP-type season, batting .390 with 31 HR and 107 RBI. He's a must start.
Brandon McCarthy, SPHot9/8/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy was outstanding Saturday in a win over San Francisco.
Insight: McCarthy (8 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 6 K's 1 BB) kept the Giants in check by featuring his signature sinker-ball. He's been a horse lately, going at least seven innings in each of his last three outings (1.88 ERA over that span).
Martin Prado, 3B9/7/2013 9:29:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado was out of Saturday's lineup due to an illness.
Insight: Prado should be back in the lineup in one or two days. He has hit .346 with a .922 OPS since the All-Star break.
Aaron Hill, 2B9/5/2013 11:08:00 AM
Description: D'Backs second baseman Aaron Hill is 7-for-14 with a 1.319 OPS versus Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong.
Insight: Hill has produced well this season (.304, 9 HR, 35 RBI), but has been limited to 67 games by injury. Despite just one hit in his last four games, we like this matchup.
Randall Delgado, SP9/4/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Randall Delgado limited Toronto to four hits and three runs over seven innings in a no decision Wednesday.
Insight: Since joining the rotation in June, Delgado has gone 4-5 with a solid 3.57 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 95 2/3 innings.
Willie Bloomquist, SSHot9/4/2013 11:41:00 AM
Description: If you're competing in a daily fantasy league, Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist could be a smart play Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: The Diamondbacks haven't released their starting lineup yet but based on Bloomquist's past success against starter Mark Buehrle (.463 AVG in 41 at bats), we're guessing he'll be in it. It's also worth noting that Bloomquist is hitting .563 since returning from the DL last week (9-for-16).
Aaron Hill, 2BCold9/4/2013 11:37:00 AM
Description: D'Backs second baseman Aaron Hill is going up against Blue Jays lefthander Mark Buehrle on Wednesday. In the past, that hasn't worked out too well for him.
Insight: Hill carries an ugly .167 average in 24 encounters with Buehrle. He's also in the midst of a 3-for-17 dry spell at the plate. Wednesday looks like a good day to leave Hill on your team's bench.
Patrick Corbin, SPCold9/3/2013 7:31:00 PM
Description: Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said that he might consider giving Patrick Corbin extra rest if he struggles again in his next start, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: He's given up 13 earned runs in his past two starts after allowing that many in his previous six outings. Corbin was 12-1 with a 2.31 ERA on July 23 but he has gone 1-4 in his last seven starts.
Patrick Corbin, SPCold9/1/2013 10:36:00 PM
Description: D'Backs lefthander Patrick Corbin (5 IP, 9 H, 5 ER) got knocked around Sunday against San Francisco.
Insight: He's given up 13 runs in his past two starts after allowing that many in his previous six outings. The second half has not been kind to Corbin. Since the break, he's just 2-4 with a 4.47 ERA. In the first half of 2013, he was 11-1 with a 2.35 ERA.
Aaron Hill, 2BHot9/1/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill finally got comfortable in August after having a tough first four months of the year.
Insight: A broken hand kept Hill out from April 14 to June 25 and he only hit .266 with a .754 OPS in his first 30 games back in the lineup, but he went 35-for-94 (.372) with seven doubles, a triple, four homers, 16 RBI and a 1.054 OPS last month.
Martin Prado, 3BHot9/1/2013 10:07:00 AM

Aaron Hill, 2B8/30/2013 11:40:00 AM

Insight: Hill is batting .316 with 9 HR, 35 RBI and a .9009 OPS, but has only managed to stay healthy enough for 63 games. He's a must start if in uniform.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot8/30/2013 11:35:00 AM
Description: Look up in the dictionary "owning" a pitcher and you will see Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt versus Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum as the perfect example.
Insight: Goldschmidt is 9-for-17 (.529) in their matchups with five homers, 11 RBI and a 2.021 OPS. If ever there was a must-start, this is the one. The Arizona first baseman is having an MVP-type season, batting .300 with 31 HR and 104 RBI.
Wade Miley, SPHot8/29/2013 10:54:00 AM
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley has a 2.31 ERA since late June.
Insight: Miley started out 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA after putting together a fantastic rookie season and finishing second in NL Rookie of the Year voting. However, he has turned his season around.
Aaron Hill, 2B8/27/2013 10:16:00 AM

Miguel Montero, C8/26/2013 7:04:00 PM
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero has been activated from the 15-day DL.
Insight: He's batting sixth Monday against the Padres. Montero, who was out with an inflamed back, hasn't played in the major leagues since July 28th.

Martin Prado, 3B8/26/2013 11:18:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado is questionable for Monday's game against San Diego with tightness in his back.
Insight: Prado is hitting .282 with 13 home runs and a .756 OPS, but has been very good since the break - .357 with a .977 OPS.
Gerardo Parra, RFCold8/25/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra went 5-for-9 with a double, a walk and three RBI Saturday against the Phillies.

Martin Prado, 3B8/25/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado will get the day off Sunday against the Phillies due to a tight back.
Insight: Prado went 3-for-9 with a homer during Saturday's 18-inning game and is hitting .357 with five home runs and a .977 OPS since the All-Star break.
Adam Eaton, RF8/25/2013 10:09:00 AM
Description: Arizona outfielder Adam Eaton went 4-for-10 in Saturday's 18-inning game against the Phillies.
Insight: Eaton is 12-for-32 (.375) with four extra-base hits (one HR), six RBI and six runs over his last seven games (six starts). However, he's hitting just .258 with a .711 OPS and has zero steals on one attempt after swiping 44 in the minors last season.
J.J. Putz, RP8/24/2013 6:14:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed righthander J.J. Putz on the 15-day DL.
Insight: Putz was diagnosed with a dislocated right finger after barehanding a grounder Friday night against the Phillies. Putz hasn't been closing for the D'Backs so even before the injury, his fantasy value was pretty limited.
Trevor Cahill, SP8/22/2013 3:41:00 PM
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill took a no decision Thursday afternoon despite allowing one run on four hits over seven innings against the Reds.
Insight: Cahill gave up four earned runs in five innings in his first start back from the disabled list last week after missing nearly two months with a shoulder problem. He has a 4.56 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP this season.
Patrick Corbin, SPHot8/20/2013 10:13:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin struck out 10 and allowed two runs on six hits Tuesday versus Cincinnati. in his second complete game of the season.

Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado is 6-for-12 against Cincinnati right-hander Bronson Arroyo with a homer and a 1.333 OPS.
Insight: Prado is currently on a six-game hitting streak, batting .379 over the span. He is a low-end starter fantasy value (.278, 11 HR, 56 RBI) who benefits from being eligible at 2B, 3B and outfield.
Martin Prado, 3BHot8/17/2013 9:17:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado stroked four hits Saturday in a win over Pittsburgh.
Insight: It's his second four-hit game in his last nine outings. The former Brave is hitting a ridiculous .379 in 103 at bats since the All-Star break.
Trevor Cahill, SP8/17/2013 3:46:00 PM
Description: D'Backs starter Trevor Cahill has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: Hip and shoulder problems have kept Cahill out since early July. Cahill has disappointed fantasy owners with a 3-10 record in 17 starts this season (4.66 ERA).
Aaron Hill, 2BHot8/14/2013 9:03:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill has picked up two hits in six of the last seven games. He went 2-for-6 with a walk and two RBI, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 14th inning, Wednesday against Baltimore.

Trevor Cahill, SPCold8/14/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill (shoulder, hip) is expected to return from his rehab assignment this weekend, according to the team's website.
Insight: Cahill doesn't have much fantasy value this season. He's not a high-strikeout guy and he's posted a 3-10 record with a 4.66 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.
Miguel Montero, C8/14/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero (back), currently on the disabled list, should head out on rehab assignment and is expected to return to the lineup when first eligible next Tuesday.
Insight: Montero has been dealing with inflammation in his lower back since the last week of July. He hasn't been much of a fantasy option this season with a .228 batting average and a .661 OPS - well below his career numbers of .268 and .780.
Willie Bloomquist, SS8/14/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Arizona infielder Willie Bloomquist (broken bones in left hand) has been taking grounders and batting practice and should head out on a rehab assignment very soon.
Insight: Bloomquist has mostly been used in a pinch-hitting capacity so it probably won't change many fantasy rosters.
Matt Davidson, 3B8/13/2013 10:52:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he'll use third base prospect Matt Davidson is a reserve role, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Davidson, ranked as the D-Backs' No. 2 prospect by MLB.com, hit .278 with 16 homers, 68 RBI and an .832 OPS in 108 games with Triple-A Reno this season. With Eric Chavez going on the disabled list, it looked as though the team was calling up Davidson to play every day, but that won't be the case.
Cody Ross, LF8/12/2013 8:09:00 PM
Description: D'Backs left fielder Cody Ross has been placed on the disabled list. Ross dislocated his hip running to first base Sunday versus the Mets.
Insight: Ross is going to have surgery on Tuesday. He'll finish the year with a .278 average, 8 HR and 38 RBI in 94 games.
Cody Ross, LF8/11/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Cody Ross has been diagnosed with a dislocated right hip. SOURCE: Evan Drellich, MassLive.com
Insight: We knew the injury was serious when Ross had to be carted off the field. We'd be shocked if he plays another game this season.
Cody Ross, LF8/11/2013 5:22:00 PM
Description: Arizona left fielder Cody Ross appeared to suffer a serious injury Sunday versus the Mets. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: He hurt his leg running out a grounder and had to be carted off the field. Ross (.278, 8 HR, 38 RBI) could be done for the season.
Matt Davidson, 3B8/11/2013 2:38:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have called up their No. 2 prospect Matt Davidson to take the place of Eric Chavez (knee, hip) at third base.
Insight: Davidson hit .278 with 16 homers, 68 RBI and an .832 OPS in 108 games with Triple-A Reno this season. He's strikes out a lot (123 K this season), so he could have trouble hitting for average in the majors. His biggest contribution to fantasy leagues will come via his power.
Eric Chavez, 3B8/11/2013 2:34:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks placed third baseman Eric Chavez on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Chavez is dealing with knee and hip soreness, according to Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic. The D-Backs have called up their No. 2 prospect Matt Davidson from the minors.
Martin Prado, 3BHot8/11/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado has come away with just six hits in 29 at-bats against Jon Niese of the New York Mets, who will start Sunday against the D-Backs.
Insight: Prado is hitting everything right now -- he's 16-for-38 (.421) with six doubles, one homer and eight RBI over his last nine games -- and Niese hasn't started since June 20 due to a torn left rotator cuff, so fantasy owners should ignore the past history and roll with Prado Sunday.
Martin Prado, 3B8/8/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado collected four hits Wednesday in a victory over Tampa Bay.
Insight: He needed a triple for the cycle. Prado's four RBI were the most he's had in a game since May 12, 2011 against the Nationals.
Cody Ross, RFHot8/2/2013 11:04:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks right fielder Cody Ross went off for four hits Friday in his return to Fenway Park.
Insight: In his first game back in Boston the former Red Sox delivered two doubles, a single and his seventh homer of the season. He even found time to grab a stolen base. Ross has gone 9-for-14 at the dish over his last three contests.
Aaron Hill, 2B8/2/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill should not be in any fantasy lineups when the Diamondbacks face Jon Lester and the Red Sox.
Insight: Hill is an anemic 2-for-32 (.063) against the Boston left-hander with nine strikeouts.
Miguel Montero, C8/1/2013 5:39:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed catcher Miguel Montero (back) on the disabled list.
Insight: Montero has been dealing with inflammation in his lower back since the last week of July. Wil Nieves will be the starting catcher with Montero out, but he isn't a fantasy option.
Wade Miley, SPHot8/1/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley turned in another good outing Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: And he'll probably be getting some thank you emails from the Red Sox, who were able to overtake the Rays for first place in the AL East. Miley is 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in his last five starts. He'll face Tampa again next Tuesday.
Jason Kubel, LF7/30/2013 9:53:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel is questionable for Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay with a stiff back, but if he plays he's a career .368 hitter with three homers versus Rays starter Roberto Hernandez.
Insight: Kubel hasn't performed up to expectations this season (.234, 5 HR, 27 RBI, .668 OPS), so this injury shouldn't cause much angst for fantasy owners. A.J. Pollock would likely get the start if Kubel can't go.
Patrick Corbin, SPHot7/28/2013 9:56:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks hurler Patrick Corbin suffered his second defeat of the season Sunday against San Diego.
Insight: He lost despite giving up one run in eight innings. He's 12-2 with a 2.24 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP and a 123/36 K/BB in 144 1/3 innings.
Miguel Montero, C7/27/2013 4:24:00 PM

Aaron Hill, 2B7/27/2013 3:40:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hamstring) is not expected to return to the lineup until Sunday, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Hill went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles before exiting Friday's game with a tight right hamstring. "I could've finished the game, but I just took it easy," Hill said. "Not worth it today."
Aaron Hill, 2B7/26/2013 10:42:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill left Friday's game against San Diego because of a tight hamstring. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: Hill went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles before exiting. Martin Prado moved from third base to second when Hill went out of the game. Eric Chavez, who started the game on the bench, has taken over for Prado at third base.
Miguel Montero, C7/26/2013 6:05:00 PM
Description: D'Backs catcher Miguel Montero won't suit up Friday versus the Padres. SOURCE: Jack Magruder, Fox Sports Arizona
Insight: He's still struggling with back inflammation. Wil Nieves will fill in at catcher until Montero is healthy again.
Wade Miley, SP7/26/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley has won three of his last four starts.
Insight: Miley went 7 2/3 innings and allowed one run on five hits to beat the Cubs Thursday night and has lowered his ERA from 4.70 to 3.86 since June 26.
Aaron Hill, 2B7/26/2013 9:27:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill went into Thursday's game in a 4-for-31(.129) slump with 11 K in that span, but he went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI against the Cubs.
Insight: Hill's average dropped from .305 to .262 during his slump, but because he has just 130 at-bats this season, it won't take long for him to get it back up if he gets hot.
Miguel Montero, C7/25/2013 6:44:00 PM
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero said his MRI showed inflammation in his back but nothing serious, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Montero will avoid the disabled list for now. The backstop has had a disappointing season , hitting .226 with eight homers and a .650 OPS. He hit .284 with an .825 OPS and averaged 16 homers and 87 RBI over the previous two seasons.
Cody Ross, RF7/25/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Arizona outfielder Cody Ross is 5-for-8 with three extra base hits and a 1.977 OPS versus Cubs right-hander Carlos Villanueva.
Insight: Ross is just 1-for-8 in the first three games of the series, so needs this favorable matchup to help get going again. For the season he's batting .259 with five homers and 28 RBI.
Miguel Montero, C7/24/2013 6:26:00 PM
Description: D'Backs catcher Miguel Montero will have the night off Wednesday against the Cubs.
Insight: Wil Nieves will start behind the plate. Montero is hitting just .226 this season, 42 points below his career average.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B7/24/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has five official at-bats against Cubs hurler Jeff Samardzija and struck out five times.
Insight: Goldschmidt is a rising fantasy star, batting .314 with 21 HR and 80 RBI and a .951 OPS, but obviously doesn't see the ball well against the Cubs right-hander. Avoid this matchup.
Brad Ziegler, RP7/22/2013 8:12:00 PM
Description: According to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com, Diamondbacks righthander Brad Ziegler will hold on to the closer's role until further notice.
Insight: Finally, they got it right. After experimenting with J.J. Putz, Heath Bell and a host of others, Ziegler has rightfully won the job that should have been his all along. He's been Arizona's most consistent reliever all season, collecting 11 holds and a 2.58 ERA in 51 appearances.
Brad Ziegler, RP7/21/2013 8:42:00 PM
Description: Arizona reliever Brad Ziegler allowed two hits and one unearned run Sunday against the Giants, but he held on to pick up his fourth save.
Insight: Ziegler appears to be the Diamondbacks' closer right now. The team has turned to him in three of its last four save chances going back to before the All-Star break.
Randall Delgado, SP7/21/2013 8:24:00 PM
Description: Arizona pitcher Randall Delgado walked four batters over 5 2/3 innings Sunday at San Francisco, but he only allowed three hits and didn't give up a run to win the game.
Insight: Delgado has flirted with disaster this season, allowing 55 hits and seven homers in 44 2/3 innings, but he only walked five batters in 39 innings prior to Sunday's game. He's 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.
Martin Prado, 3B7/21/2013 8:20:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado went 3-for-4 with a triple Sunday against the Giants.
Insight: Prado is hitting just .258, down from .301 last year, even though his strikeout rate and batted ball distribution are nearly identical to last season and his HR/FB and IFFB rate are better. The difference: his BABIP, which was .322 last season, is .268 this year.
Gerardo Parra, RFCold7/21/2013 1:25:00 PM
Description: Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra faces a difficult task Sunday against the Giants. He'll have to hit against lefthander Madison Bumgarner, a pitcher he has traditionally struggled against.
Insight: Struggle may not even be the right word. To be blunt, Parra has been downright useless against Bumgarner with six strikeouts and only one hit in 12 previous at bats. His current 2-for-28 slump doesn't make us any more confident.
Tyler Skaggs, SP7/21/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Arizona is calling up lefthander Tyler Skaggs to pitch Monday against Chicago. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: Skaggs (2-1, 4.03 ERA) has had mixed results in his five big league appearances this season but the D'Backs will continue to give him chances. Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy aren't expected to come off the DL until next month so Skaggs should have quite a few opportunities to prove himself.
Brandon McCarthy, SP7/19/2013 5:11:00 PM
Description: According to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com, Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) will start his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno Sunday.
Insight: McCarthy hasn't pitched since May 30 due to right shoulder discomfort. Manager Kirk Gibson has previously said McCarthy would need two rehab starts, but the right-hander said Friday that how many starts he makes is still undecided. I think it just depends on what they need," said the right-hander. "Throw Sunday and if you get your innings and you get your pitches and you're pretty close to being ready then it's just kind of up to them if they want to let me stretch out in a big league game or another one in Reno is fine, it's just kind of up to them at this point."
Jason Kubel, LF7/19/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel is a stunning 9-for-13 (.692) with a pair of home runs and a 1.945 OPS versus Giants starter Chad Gaudin.
Insight: Kubel finished the first half in a slump, going 1-for-16 over his last six games before the break, but this hugely favorable matchup should not be ignored.
Eric Chavez, 3B7/18/2013 11:11:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez should be ready for the second half opener. He's been dealing with a stiff right hip.
Insight: Chavez pinch hit on Sunday and should be ready for duty in the second half. Starter Martin Prado is batting just .244 against right-handers, while Chavez is batting .315 with a .933 OPS against right-handers.
Brandon McCarthy, SP7/14/2013 3:26:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment later this week, according to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com.
Insight: McCarthy hasn't pitched since May 30 due to right shoulder discomfort. He'll make at least two rehab starts, manager Kirk Gibson said.
Miguel Montero, C7/14/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero went 2-for-3 with a solo homer Saturday against Milwaukee but is batting .200 in July.
Insight: Montero had his best month of the season in June, hitting .278 with two homers and a .748 OPS. That came after he hit .200 in April and .198 in May. Montero produced an average in the .280s, a home run total in the teens, an RBI total in the 80s and an OPS in the .820s in each of the previous two seasons, but he's hitting .223 with seven homers, 32 RBI and a .639 OPS in 85 games this year.
J.J. Putz, RP7/11/2013 9:42:00 PM
Description: Arizona GM Kevin Towers said Thursday that the team doesn't have a closer right now, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Insight: Putz blew his first save chance after returning from the DL on June 29, but he hasn't allowed a hit in 3 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, Heath Bell has blown his last two opportunities and allowed nine earned runs over his last 9 2/3 frames. Look for Putz to eventually retake the role.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold7/11/2013 9:34:00 PM
Description: According to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com, Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said pitcher Trevor Cahill (shoulder, hip) might not return until August.
Insight: Cahill, who is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in his last eight outings, was placed on the DL with a bruised hip earlier this month, but he also tweaked his shoulder during a game of catch last week. The shoulder injury is the more serious concern at this time.
Martin Prado, 3B7/11/2013 12:52:00 PM
Description: D'Backs third baseman Martin Prado has awful numbers against Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: The Brewers righthander has limited Prado to three hits in 21 at bats. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere for third base help on Thursday night.
Jason Kubel, LF7/11/2013 12:47:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel owns Brewers righthander Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Kubel carries a .462 lifetime average against Gallardo in 13 previous at bats. Fantasy owners will look for him to add to those totals Thursday night at Chase Field. Of course, that's assuming Kirk Gibson actually decides to play him. Kubel (.250, 4 HR, 25 RBI) has only started six of the team's last 12 games.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold7/9/2013 9:17:00 PM
Description: Arizona pitcher Trevor Cahill (hip) is not likely to be one of the team's five starters in the first turn through the rotation following the All-Star break, according to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com.
Insight: Cahill, who is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in his last eight outings, is on the disabled list with a bruised hip. He also tweaked his shoulder during a game of catch last week. We don't think either injury is serious, but the team is probably keeping him on the DL due to his struggles.
Brandon McCarthy, SP7/9/2013 9:16:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he doesn't expect Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) to return to the rotation immediately after the All-Star break, according to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com.
Insight: McCarthy hasn't pitched since May 30 due to right shoulder discomfort. He could end up being out until August.
Eric Chavez, 3B7/9/2013 9:12:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez was scratched from the lineup Tuesday due to right hip stiffness, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.
Insight: The severity is unknown, but if Chavez was in the initial lineup this obviously isn't something he has been dealing with.
Adam Eaton, RF7/9/2013 7:30:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have activated outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) from the DL.
Insight: Eaton, who has been out since late March with a sprained UCL in his throwing elbow, was a popular fantasy sleeper before his injury due to his on-base and speed potential. Eaton joins Gerardo Parra, A.J. Pollock, Cody Ross and Jason Kubel in the D-Backs outfield, so he might have trouble getting regular at-bats at first.
Martin Prado, 3B7/7/2013 1:15:00 PM
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado has struggled against Rockies starter Roy Oswalt.
Insight: He's hitting a dismal .154 against him in 13 career at bats. Prado has been pretty ordinary this year. In 84 games, he's batting .252 with eight long balls and 30 runs driven in. He's 1-for-5 on stolen base attempts this season.
Cody Ross, RF7/7/2013 9:12:00 AM
Description: Arizona right fielder Cody Ross went 5-for-5 Saturday in an 11-1 win over Colorado.
Insight: It was his first career five-hit game. Ross (.269, 5 HR, 25 RBI) also scored three runs and stole his first base of the season. Only one of the five hits was for extra bases (ground-rule double in the second inning).
Willie Bloomquist, SS7/6/2013 9:25:00 AM
Description: Willie Bloomquist's injured left hand has two broken bones and he'll be sidelined for up to two months. The Arizona infielder was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning Wednesday against Washington.
Insight: Bloomquist has mostly been used in a pinch-hitting capacity so it probably won't change many fantasy rosters.
Tyler Skaggs, RP7/4/2013 12:17:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks lefty Tyler Skaggs will start Friday against the Rockies in place of Trevor Cahill, who is on the DL with a bruised hip. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: Skaggs has a 4.26 ERA and an 87/28 K/BB in 76 innings with Triple-A Reno this season, and he just three 8 1/3 shutout innings with 13 K in his latest start. However, the lefty has posted a 5.67 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 46 major league innings.
Randall Delgado, SP7/4/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Arizona pitcher Randall Delgado earned his first win with the Diamondbacks Wednesday against the New York Mets.
Insight: Delgado has allowed two earned runs and thrown at least six innings in three of his four starts since joining the rotation and has a 25/4 K/BB in 27 innings this season. With Brandon McCarthy and Trevor Cahill on the DL and prospect Tyler Skaggs not an option after posting a 5.40 ERA in three starts this season, Delgado should remain in the rotation for now.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B7/3/2013 3:55:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has faced Mets All-Star caliber right-hander Matt Harvey just three times and struck out each time.
Insight: Goldschmidt is a rising fantasy star, batting .302 with 20 HR and 69 RBI and a .933 OPS, despite just three hits in his last 19 at-bats. You shouldn't expect much from him in the way of production while Harvey is on the mound. Of course, when Harvey pitches, you can probably say that about most hitters. Latest update, Goldschmidt is not in the starting lineup.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B7/3/2013 10:28:00 AM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has faced Mets All-Star caliber right-hander Matt Harvey just three times and struck out each time.
Insight: Goldschmidt is a rising fantasy star, batting .302 with 20 HR and 69 RBI and a .933 OPS, despite just three hits in his last 19 at-bats. You shouldn't expect much from him in the way of production while Harvey is on the mound. Of course, when Harvey pitches, you can probably say that about most hitters.
Gerardo Parra, RF7/2/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: D'Backs right fielder Gerardo Parra fell and hit his head trying to make a catch in the eighth inning Monday against New York and is doubtful for Tuesday's game.
Insight: The team said there was no concussion, but he's likely to sit at least one game. Parra has been a nice surprise this season for a No. 4 outfielder. Due to injuries he's played in 81 games and is batting .301 with seven homers, 26 RBI, 47 runs and an .811 OPS.
Gerardo Parra, RF7/1/2013 10:32:00 PM
Description: D'Backs right fielder Gerardo Parra fell and hit his head trying to make a catch in the eighth inning Monday against New York. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: Parra went 1-for-4 before exiting. He hit the ground pretty hard and it's possible he may have suffered a concussion.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold7/1/2013 7:10:00 PM
Description: D'Backs righthander Trevor Cahill has been moved to the disabled list.
Insight: He's out with a bruised hip. Cahill is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in his last eight outings. We're guessing that's the real reason Arizona decided to DL him.
Brandon McCarthy, SP7/1/2013 1:01:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday afternoon, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: McCarthy threw a bullpen session on June 21 but he has had to take a step back after experiencing fatigue in his shoulder. The right-hander has been sidelined since May 30 due to shoulder inflammation and is still out indefinitely.
Adam Eaton, RF7/1/2013 12:40:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) will play the outfield in rehab games Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Eaton, who has been out since late March with a sprained UCL in his throwing elbow, has been serving as the DH in his rehab assignment with High-A Visalia. He'll likely return to action sometime in the middle of this month. The outfielder was a popular fantasy sleeper before his injury due to his on-base and speed potential.
Martin Prado, 3B6/30/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado has gone 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles against Braves pitcher Paul Maholm.
Insight: Prado has had a terrible season in his first year with Arizona. He's actually having his worst month of the season in June, but if you own him, Sunday would be a good day to play him.
Jason Kubel, LF6/30/2013 10:37:00 AM
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel has only taken 24 at-bats against left-handers this season and has a .167 average in those situations, but he might be a good play Sunday.
Insight: Kubel has gone 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, a homer and four RBI against Braves left-hander Paul Maholm, who will be on the hill Sunday.
Ian Kennedy, SP6/29/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy walked four and gave up four runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings Saturday at Atlanta.
Insight: Kennedy was making his return from a 10-game suspension. The righty has been horrible this year, going 3-4 with a 5.36 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He's been bad both on the road and at home too, so you can't even pick your spots if you own him. It's time to move on.
A.J. Pollock, CF6/29/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock hit his sixth homer of the season Saturday against the Braves.
Insight: Pollock has unexpectedly received regular playing time due to injuries in Arizona's outfield. While his defense is spectacular -- Pollock's 10.6 UZR ranks third in baseball -- he's only hitting .255 with middling power and speed numbers.
Miguel Montero, C6/29/2013 10:15:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI Saturday at Atlanta.
Insight: The backstop has been better in June, hitting .278 with two homers, after batting .199 with three homers in April and May combined, but he's still not doing enough to warrant ownership in most standard leagues.
Eric Chavez, 3B6/28/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: The D'Backs have officially activated corner infielder Eric Chavez from the disabled list.
Insight: Chavez was out with a strained oblique. His .325 average through 38 games is the highest of his 16-year career.
Eric Hinske, 1B6/28/2013 6:21:00 PM
Description: The D'Backs have designated first baseman Eric Hinske for assignment.
Insight: Hinske made headlines earlier this month for his involvement in a bench-clearing brawl. Unfortunately, he rarely made the news for his play on the field, hitting just .173 in 52 at bats this season. Hinske's next team will be his eighth in 12 major league seasons.
J.J. Putz, RP6/28/2013 4:41:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz (elbow) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: It won't be long before he retakes the closer role as Heath Bell has struggled of late, giving up seven earned runs in his last six outings (five plus innings).
Ian Kennedy, SP6/28/2013 11:10:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy served his 10-game suspension and is available to start on Saturday.
Insight: Kennedy is 3-4 with a 5.21 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, though his last two outings before the suspension were decent six inning efforts.
Patrick Corbin, SP6/27/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: Arizona ace Patrick Corbin (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's) remained undefeated Thursday in his start against Washington.
Insight: It's Corbin's fifth no-decision in a row. He's pitching well but the Diamondbacks just can't seem to score any runs for him. Over his last five outings, Arizona has averaged just four runs per game. Maybe Corbin will finally reach win No. 10 Tuesday against New York.
Brandon McCarthy, SP6/27/2013 4:05:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) had to play catch on flat ground Wednesday instead of off a mound due to shoulder fatigue, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: McCarthy threw a bullpen session last week but he has had to take a step back after experiencing fatigue. The right-hander has been sidelined since May 30 due to shoulder inflammation and is still a few weeks away from returning.
Martin Prado, 3B6/27/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado has gone 3-for-16 (.188) in his previous meetings versus Washington's Stephen Strasburg, Thursday's scheduled starter.
Insight: Prado is having his worst month of the season, hitting .188 with a .560 OPS. Bench him Thursday with Strasburg on the hill.
Willie Bloomquist, SS6/26/2013 10:19:00 PM
Description: X-rays came back negative on Willie Bloomquist's injured left hand. The Arizona shortstop was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning Wednesday against Washington. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: That's obviously good news for the D'Backs. Bloomquist has mostly been used in a pinch-hitting capacity so even if the hand injury turned out to be serious it probably wouldn't have affected many fantasy rosters.
Willie Bloomquist, SS6/26/2013 10:00:00 PM
Description: D'Backs infielder Willie Bloomquist is headed for X-rays on his left hand. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: Bloomquist was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning. He didn't immediately come out of the game, which is always a good sign. He's hitting .292 in 21 games this year.
Heath Bell, RPCold6/26/2013 8:05:00 PM
Description: Arizona closer Heath Bell said he has worked out a mechanical issue that has caused him to allow seven runs in four innings over his last five outings, according to MLB.com. "I fixed it last Sunday," Bell said. "It was really something very simple. It's one of those things sometimes a coach sees you do something that you don't feel yourself doing or see yourself doing. Then you correct it. And as soon as you do, it's like, 'Why wasn't I doing this before?'"
Insight: Bell has saved 13 games in 16 chances but has a 5.02 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. He has allowed 37 hits and walked 10 in 28 2/3 innings this season and likely will relinquish the closer role to J.J. Putz when Putz comes off the DL this week.
Aaron Hill, 2B6/25/2013 10:33:00 PM
Description: Playing his first game since April 14, Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored Tuesday at Washington.
Insight: Hill missed more than two months with a fractured left hand. He was one of the top second base options in fantasy last season and started off well this year before his injury. He's hitting .325 in 40 at-bats and should be owned in all leagues.
Martin Prado, 3B6/25/2013 10:33:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk Tuesday at Washington.
Insight: After going 44 games without a home run, Prado has two in his last five games. Unfortunately, he went 0-for-8 in the three games before Tuesday and is still only batting .241.
Trevor Cahill, SPCold6/25/2013 10:25:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill dropped to 3-9 after losing to Washington on Tuesday.
Insight: Cahill has lost five straight decisions and has a 7.34 ERA over his last seven starts. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits over five innings Tuesday against has a 4.29 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP overall.
Didi Gregorius, SS6/25/2013 4:52:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius is not in Tuesday's starting lineup. Willie Bloomquist will start at shortstop with Aaron Hill at second base.
Insight: After a fast start, Gregorius' average has steadily fallen. He's batting .250 in 19 June games after batting .407 in April and .293 in May. With Hill healthy, gregorius is likely to share time with Bloomquist.
Aaron Hill, 2B6/25/2013 4:18:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill is finally ready to return from his broken hand, has been activated, and is in Tuesday's lineup against Washington.
Insight: Hill returns to face Nationals' ace Gio Gonzalez in an unfavorable matchup. He's 0-for-7 in his career matchups with Gonzalez and fantasy owners should wait one more day before installing Hill back into the lineup.
Aaron Hill, 2B6/25/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill is finally ready to return from his broken hand and is expected to be activated in time for Tuesday's game with Washington.
Insight: Hill returns to face Nationals' ace Gio Gonzalez in an unfavorable matchup. He's 0-for-7 in his career matchups with Gonzalez and fantasy owners should wait one more day before installing Hill back into the lineup.
Heath Bell, RPCold6/23/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Heath Bell has been a disaster over his last five outings. Over that span, the Arizona closer has watched his ERA rise from 3.28 all the way to 5.02.
Insight: He's given up a home run in five straight appearances. Miraculously, he's only blown one save during that stretch. Either way, fantasy owners should avoid Bell until he can start keeping the ball in the park.
Aaron Hill, 2B6/23/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: The Arizona Republic is reporting that Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill is finally ready to return from his broken hand.
Insight: The plan is to activate him Tuesday for the start of the Diamondbacks' series against the Nationals. Hill should be in all fantasy starting lineups upon his return.
Patrick Corbin, SP6/22/2013 10:04:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin matched Mike Leake pitch for pitch Saturday in a classic pitcher's duel at Chase Field.
Insight: The young lefty allowed just one run and three hits over eight brilliant innings. He's undefeated in 15 starts this season (9-0).
Aaron Hill, 2B6/21/2013 9:16:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) will need "at least" two more Triple-A games, according to D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com.
Insight: Hill broke his left hand after being hit by a pitch on April 9 and hasn't played since April 14. He could be back in the majors after the weekend and should be added in all leagues.
Brandon McCarthy, SP6/21/2013 8:58:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Insight: McCarthy has been on the disabled list since the beginning of June due to shoulder inflammation. He'll throw another bullpen session within the next few days.
Miguel Montero, C6/21/2013 2:20:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is hitless in 10 at-bats versus Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto.
Insight: Montero is not living up to expectations, batting just .222 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 230 at-bats. That's well below last year's pace of .286 with 15 HR and 88 RBI. This matchup isn't going to help any of his numbers.
Trevor Cahill, SP6/19/2013 7:45:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks don't expect Trevor Cahill to miss any time after suffering a bruised hip Wednesday against the Marlins. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZ Central Sports
Insight: Cahill (3-8, 3.92 ERA) hasn't won a start in over a month. Fantasy owners can ignore him for now.
Trevor Cahill, SP6/19/2013 6:57:00 PM
Description: Arizona righthander Trevor Cahill suffered a brusied hip when he was hit by a line drive Wednesday against Miami. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZ Central Sports
Insight: He's day-to-day. We'll see if he's ready to make his next start Tuesday versus the Nationals.
Eric Chavez, 3B6/19/2013 4:17:00 PM
Description: Arizona third baseman Eric Chavez (oblique) is expected to begin his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno early next week, Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Insight: Chavez suffered a strained right oblique during an at-bat on May 30. He could be back by the end of this month.
Trevor Cahill, SP6/19/2013 4:12:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill was pulled from Wednesday's game in the second inning after being hit in the hip area by a line drive.
Insight: The Diamondbacks' rotation is already thin with Brandon McCarthy on the DL and Ian Kennedy on suspension. Cahill was actually hit in the first inning and came out for the second before being removed.
Martin Prado, 3B6/19/2013 9:51:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado hit his first homer since April 29 Tuesday versus Miami.
Insight: Prado had a homer drought of 44 games (42 starts). Despite a batted ball distribution (22.3% LD, 48.6% GB, 29.1% FB) that is nearly identical to last season, Prado's BABIP is just .260 compared to .322 last year. That explains why his average has dropped from .301 to .245. He should have better luck in the last few months of the season.
Randall Delgado, SP6/19/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: In his first start of the 2013 season, Diamondbacks hurler Randall Delgado allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out six with zero walks over seven innings Tuesday agaisnt the Marlins.
Insight: Delgado, a former Braves pitching prospect, was traded from Atlanta to Arizona in the Justin Upton trade. While Ian Kennedy will miss and a start due to suspension and Brandon McCarthy is still on the DL, the D-Backs have enough days off in the next week that Delgado might only get one more start before being returned to the bullpen or minors.
Patrick Corbin, SP6/18/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: Win No. 10 has proved to be elusive for Arizona lefty Patrick Corbin. He has gone three starts without a decision.
Insight: Corbin is stuck on 9-0. He threw eight innings and allowed two runs on two hits Monday against the Marlins, but Arizona only got him two runs on the other side.
Brandon McCarthy, SP6/18/2013 9:40:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Insight: It will be his first time on the mound since going on the DL with shoulder inflammation. The right-hander also had a seizure nine days ago but is fine.
Ian Kennedy, SP6/18/2013 9:31:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy dropped the appeal of his 10-game suspension and began serving it Monday.
Insight: Kennedy was able to start Sunday at San Diego and might only have to miss one start due to the suspension because Arizona has two off days over the next seven days.
Wade Miley, SP6/16/2013 9:44:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley gave up six runs in six innings Saturday at San Diego, but five were unearned.
Insight: Miley allowed four hits in the bottom of the fourth, but because Didi Gregorius made an error on the second batter of the inning, all five runs Miley allowed in the frame were unearned. It still wasn't an encouraging start for the struggling lefty. Miley is 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 83 1/3 innings.
Miguel Montero, C6/16/2013 9:35:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI Saturday against the Padres.
Insight: Montero is 6-for-12 with three runs and three RBI over his last three games, but is still hitting just .221 with four homers.
Miguel Montero, C6/15/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is a career .333 hitter with three home runs versus Padres starter Jason Marquis.
Insight: He has been in a season-long slump and is hitting .215 with three home runs and 54 strikeouts in 214 at-bats. Maybe this favorable matchup will help.
Ian Kennedy, SP6/14/2013 1:33:00 PM
Description: Arizona righthander Ian Kennedy has been suspended for 10 games due to his role in Tuesday night's bench clearing brawl against the Dodgers.
Insight: Dodgers righthander Zack Greinke plunked Miguel Montero after Kennedy threw at rookie Yasiel Puig and hit him in the face. Kennedy responded by nailing Greinke near the head in the next half inning, which led to the benches clearing. Kennedy figures to appeal the suspension until after his next start and thus will only cost fantasy owners one start.
Gerardo Parra, LF6/13/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra picked up three hits and had two RBI and a walk in six at-bats Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Parra has long been known as a great glove man, but this year his bat has caught up. He's hitting .322 with five homers, 22 RBI, 42 runs and five steals.
Cody Ross, OF6/13/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross went 4-for-7 with a double and two runs scored Wednesday versus the Dodgers.
Insight: Ross was a solid third or fourth fantasy outfielder last season with Boston, hitting 22 homers with 81 RBI, but his move to Arizona has not gone well. He started the season with an injury and is batting .272 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 50 games. He has struggled immensely against righties, batting .203 with zero homers and 21 K in 118 at-bats against them.
Miguel Montero, C6/13/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero had not had more than two hits in a game all season prior to Wednesday's four-hit effort.
Insight: Montero went 4-for-6 with one RBI and two runs. He has been in a season-long slump and is hitting .218 with three home runs and 52 strikeouts in 211 at-bats.
Ian Kennedy, SP6/12/2013 7:31:00 PM
Description: Arizona righthander Ian Kennedy will probably be suspended for his role in Tuesday night's bench clearing brawl against the Dodgers.
Insight: Dodgers righthander Zack Greinke plunked Miguel Montero after Kennedy threw at rookie Yasiel Puig and hit him in the face. Kennedy responded by nailing Greinke in the head in the next half inning, which led to the benches clearing. Kennedy, Puig and three coaches were ejected. We should know the length of Kennedy's suspension sometime in the next 24 hours.
Josh Collmenter, SP6/10/2013 10:00:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks righty Josh Collmenter is expected to take over for Tyler Skaggs in the starting rotation. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: Skaggs was sent down to Triple-A after a rocky outing on Sunday. The earliest the D'Backs would need Collmenter to pitch is June 18th against the Marlins.
Tyler Skaggs, RPCold6/10/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks are sending lefthander Tyler Skaggs back to Triple-A.
Insight: Skaggs looked awful on Sunday, allowing eight hits, three walks and five earned runs in five innings. Despite his struggles, Skaggs (1-1, 5.40 ERA) is still a top prospect and likely to receive another chance at the major league level later this season.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B6/10/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is a career .118 hitter (2-for-17) against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Goldschmidt is a rising star, batting .320 with 15 HR and 58 RBI, but you shouldn't expect much from him in the way of production while Kershaw is on the mound.
Martin Prado, 3BCold6/9/2013 8:39:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado is 0-for-10 over his last three games.
Insight: Prado looked to be breaking out of his season-long slump when he went 7-for-8 on May 25-26, but he is 10-for-48 (.208) over his last 13 games.
Tyler Skaggs, RP6/9/2013 8:33:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks left-hander Tyler Skaggs has given up 10 earned runs on 14 hits in 10 2/3 innings since being recalled to take the place of Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) in the rotation.
Insight: Baseball America ranked Skaggs 12th on its preseason top-100 prospects list. The left-hander had a rough year at Triple-A, posting a 5.23 ERA after posting a 5.83 ERA in 29 1/3 major league innings last season. He'll have an easier matchup at San Diego his next time out.
Brandon McCarthy, SP6/9/2013 9:40:00 AM
Description: D'Backs starter Brandon McCarthy suffered a seizure last week and had to be rushed to the hospital. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: McCarthy was in a restaurant with his wife when the seizure happened. He's doing well and the team expects him to resume throwing within the next couple of days. The righthander is on the DL with shoulder inflammation.
Gerardo Parra, LF6/8/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is hitless in 10 at-bats versus Giants starter Madison Bumgarner with five strikeouts.
Insight: That's a bad history to try and buck, but Parra does have six hits in his last 13 at-bats including a pair in the series opener on Friday night.
Adam Eaton, RF6/7/2013 7:25:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) will start throwing Monday, according to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com.
Insight: Eaton suffered a sprained UCL late in March and began feeling more soreness during his rehab assignment in late May. He's still a few weeks away from returning to action.
J.J. Putz, RP6/7/2013 7:22:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, according to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com.
Insight: Putz last pitched on May 7 due to a strained right elbow. This will be his first time throwing off a mound since that date. Heath Bell has saved 9-of-10 chances since taking over the closer role, and Putz wasn't exactly a sure thing before his injury, but we expect Putz to get the job back when he returns.
Aaron Hill, 2B6/7/2013 7:20:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) will take batting practice on the field Friday, according to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com.
Insight: Hill broke his left hand after being hit by a pitch on April 9 and hasn't played since April 14. His hand has taken longer than expected to heal, but he should be getting close to a rehab assignment.
Daniel Hudson, SP6/7/2013 4:48:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson, who had Tommy John surgery last season, has re-torn the UCL in his right elbow.
Insight: The 26-year-old started his rehab assignment recently and was trying to work his way back to the rotation by next month. The right-hander will likely have to undergo another Tommy John surgery and will miss most of 2014.
Ian Kennedy, SP6/6/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy gave up 13 hits and 10 earned runs in four innings Thursday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Kennedy is now 3-4 with a 5.72 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. It's hard to believe he won 21 games with a 2.88 ERA just two seasons ago.
Cody Ross, OF6/6/2013 5:49:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Ross is hitting .208 (22-for-106) against right-handers this year, and with tough righty Shelby Miller starting for St. Louis Thursday, the D-Backs will go with A.J. Pollock in center field and Gerardo Parra in right.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot6/6/2013 9:34:00 AM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt continued his RBI tear with a grand slam Wednesday versus the Cardinals.
Insight: Goldschmidt has contributed 12 RBI in his last five games. That puts him on pace for 146, which would be the most we've seen in the major leagues since Ryan Howard had that exact number back in 2008. He's on the short list of NL MVP candidates.
Miguel Montero, C6/5/2013 5:55:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Montero caught all 14 innings Wednesday night. He's hitting just .200 with three homers this season and fantasy owners should move on.
Tyler Skaggs, RP6/4/2013 5:01:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs has been recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Tuesday against the Cardinals. Skaggs is replacing Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) in the rotation while McCarthy is on the DL.
Insight: Baseball America ranked Skaggs 12th on its preseason top-100 prospects list. The left-hander has had a rough year at Triple-A, posting a 5.23 ERA, but he does have a 54/17 K/BB in 51 2/3 innings and threw a six-inning, three-hit, no-run, nine-strikeout start against the Rangers on May 27. On potential alone, he should be owned in most leagues.
Tyler Skaggs, RP6/3/2013 6:55:00 PM
Description: Tyler Skaggs will make his second start of the season Tuesday against the Cardinals. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: He'll take over for Brandon McCarthy, who was recently placed on the DL with a right shoulder injury. Skaggs is 2-3 with a 4.84 ERA in seven big league appearances.
Patrick Corbin, SP6/2/2013 7:36:00 PM
Description: D'Backs ace Patrick Corbin extended his winning streak to seven games Sunday against the Cubs.
Insight: It wasn't Corbin's best outing (6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB's, 5 K's) but it was good enough for the win. He's now 9-0 with a 2.06 ERA in 11 starts. Opponents are hitting just .210 against the lefthander this season.
Daniel Hudson, SP6/2/2013 12:32:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson, who had Tommy John surgery last season, will be reevaluated after his second rehab start on June 10 to determine his status, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Hudson was throwing in the mid-90s in an extended spring training game last week and is ready to take the next step. The right-hander didn't appear to have a clear path to join Arizona's rotation, but with Brandon McCarthy's shoulder injury and Wade Miley's continued struggles, he certainly could join the mix if he's ready after June 10.
Tyler Skaggs, RP6/2/2013 12:24:00 PM
Description: Arizona prospect Tyler Skaggs is expected to take Brandon McCarthy's spot in the rotation, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: McCarthy was placed on the DL Saturday with a shoulder injury. Randall Delgado was called up to take the roster spot, but he's expected to work out of the bullpen. Skaggs should be added in all leagues, as he is one of baseball's top prospects. The left-hander struck out nine batters in six shutout innings in a spot start on May 27 against the Rangers.
J.J. Putz, RP6/2/2013 12:16:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz (elbow) will throw flat-ground sessions this week before possibly throwing off a mound next weekend, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Putz last pitched on May 7 due to a strained right elbow. Heath Bell has saved eight of his nine chances since Putz went on the DL.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot6/2/2013 9:23:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt homered, drove in four runs and scored three times Saturday against the Cubs.
Insight: Like he did last year, Goldschmidt has provided fantasy owners with six-category production. This year, he has just turned it up a couple of notches in every category. He's hitting .332 with 13 homers, 45 RBI, 37 runs, four steals and a 1.014 OPS.
Aaron Hill, 2B6/1/2013 4:45:00 PM
Description: According to Diamondbacks broadcaster Steve Berthiaume, second baseman Aaron Hill's tests showed that the strength in his fractured left hand is about 90 percent.
Insight: Hill hurt his hand on a HBP on April 9 and hasn't played since April 14. The second baseman should be back in 10-14 days.
Eric Chavez, 3B6/1/2013 4:42:00 PM
Description: Arizona third baseman Eric Chavez' tests revealed a minor oblique tear, according to D-Backs' broadcaster Steve Berthiaume.
Insight: Chavez hurt his side during an at-bat in Thursday's game. He'll likely miss at least a month.
Brandon McCarthy, SP6/1/2013 4:38:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed starter Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Insight: He'll have an MRI Sunday in Arizona. The right-hander is 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP this season. He has a history of shoulder problems. Randall Delgado has been recalled but fantasy owners can hold off on adding him. We could also see prospect Tyler Skaggs get called up.
Willie Bloomquist, SS5/31/2013 9:21:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have activated infielder Willie Bloomquist from the 15-day DL.
Insight: Bloomquist missed the first two months with a strained intercostal. Eric Chavez was placed on the DL in the corresponding roster move.
Eric Chavez, 3B5/31/2013 11:42:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez has been diagnosed with a strained right oblique, according to Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest.com.
Insight: That was what we expected after he grabbed his side on a swing during his first at-bat. As he has his entire career, Chavez has crushed right-handers this season for a .340 average, seven homers and a 1.017 OPS. He has just 11 at-bats against lefties. He's been placed on the 15-day disabled list, but could need a little more time than two weeks to recover.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B5/30/2013 6:56:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 4-for-5 Thursday against Texas.
Insight: Goldschmidt boasts an impressive batting average (.337 AVG) but the power he displayed earlier in the year has been absent over the past couple of weeks. He hasn't left the yard since May 17th, a span of ten games without a home run. Even without the homers, Goldschmidt is still a must-start.
Brandon McCarthy, SP5/30/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: The Rangers torched Brandon McCarthy on Thursday.
Insight: In 2 2/3 innings, the Arizona starter allowed six runs on nine hits without any strikeouts. That snaps McCarthy's five-game unbeaten streak. He'll look to get back on track Tuesday at St. Louis.
Eric Chavez, 3B5/30/2013 4:31:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez has been diagnosed with a strained right oblique, according to Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest.com.
Insight: That was what we expected after he grabbed his side on a swing during his first at-bat. As he has his entire career, Chavez has crushed right-handers this season for a .340 average, seven homers and a 1.017 OPS. He has just 11 at-bats against lefties. He's likely to be placed on the disabled list.
Eric Chavez, 3BHot5/30/2013 2:29:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez left Thursday's game in the middle of his first at-bat. He appeared to injure his side.
Insight: It could be an oblique injury for the oft-injured veteran. As he has his entire career, Chavez has crushed right-handers this season for a .340 average, seven homers and a 1.017 OPS. He has just 11 at-bats against lefties.
Ian Kennedy, SP5/30/2013 2:24:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy (finger) will make his next start Saturday against the Cubs, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Kennedy was scratched from Monday's start after suffering a lacerated right index finger while washing the dishes at home.
Aaron Hill, 2B5/30/2013 2:22:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) could begin hitting by the end of the weekend, according to MLB.com. The second baseman suffered a fractured left hand on April 9.
Insight: Hill's left hand is healing slowly and he already has been out for six weeks. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Hill probably will go from batting practice to extended spring training and finally on a rehab assignment, so he's still likely to miss a couple more weeks.
Gerardo Parra, LF5/30/2013 2:17:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra (calf) was in the starting lineup Thursday against the Rangers.
Insight: Parra had cramping in his left calf Monday but he has had two days to rest due to a scheduled off day Tuesday and rainout Wednesday.
Daniel Hudson, SP5/29/2013 7:33:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson, who had Tommy John surgery last season, will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Mobile on Tuesday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Hudson was throwing in the mid-90s in an extended spring training game Wednesday and is ready to take the next step. The right-hander is certainly worth rostering in mixed leagues for owners with extra DL spot, even thought Hudson doesn't have a clear path in Arizona's rotation.
Daniel Hudson, SP5/29/2013 11:48:00 AM
Description: Arizona Diamondbacks starter Daniel Hudson, who had successful Tommy John surgery last July, has been throwing 90-plus in extended spring training games.
Insight: Hudson could be heading to a rehab assignment in June and might be ready to return by the end of next month. The problem is there isn't a starting spot for him at this point.
Gerardo Parra, LF5/29/2013 11:45:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is questionable for Wednesday's game against Texas after suffering a cramp in his left calf on Monday night.
Insight: Due to injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton, Parra has had the chance to play every day, and he has responded with a .307 average and 21 extra-base hits and a .832 OPS in 202 at-bats. Consider him day-to-day.
Willie Bloomquist, SS5/29/2013 11:42:00 AM
Description: D'Backs infielder Willie Bloomquist is pounding the ball in his rehab assignment at Reno (7-for-15) and should be ready to return to the big leagues shortly.
Insight: Bloomquist's batting average was solid last season (.302) but he didn't leave the yard in any of his 324 at bats and he got thrown out 10 times on the base paths (just seven steals). With the emergence of Didi Gregorius and the return of Aaron Hill in early June, Bloomquist should stay as a part-time player and have limited fantasy value.
Adam Eaton, RF5/29/2013 11:37:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton, who was shut down from throwing after starting his rehab assignment, will see Dr. James Andrews.
Insight: Eaton suffered a sprained UCL late in March and began feeling more soreness recently. We should get a definitive answer shortly.
Aaron Hill, 2B5/28/2013 8:57:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill's CT scan showed that his fractured left hand is "mildly improved," according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. He proceed with baseball activites and see how his hand responds.
Insight: Hill's left hand is healing slowly and he already has been out for six weeks. We should see him back by mid-June at the latest if he doesn't suffer a setback.
Gerardo Parra, LF5/28/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is questionable for Tuesday's game against Texas after suffering a cramp in his left calf on Monday night.
Insight: Due to injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton, Parra has had the chance to play every day, and he has responded with a .307 average and 21 extra-base hits and a .832 OPS in 202 at-bats. Consider him day-to-day.
Tyler Skaggs, RP5/27/2013 9:14:00 PM
Description: Tyler Skaggs pitched six scoreless innings Monday in his return to the major leagues.
Insight: Monday was Skaggs' second major league victory. Skaggs was only called up for the double-header so he'll head back down to Triple-A until a spot opens up in the D'Backs rotation.
Eric Chavez, 3BHot5/26/2013 7:07:00 PM
Description: In case you haven't been able to watch the late-night west coast action, D'Backs third baseman Eric Chavez has been swinging a hot bat.
Insight: Chavez hit a home run on Sunday, his seventh of the season to go along with a .333 batting average, 24 RBI and a stunning .975 OPS.
Ian Kennedy, SP5/26/2013 4:07:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy will miss is schedule start on Monday due to a cut on his right index finger which happened while he was doing the dishes, according to beat writer Nick Piecoro.
Insight: He's got a solid excuse to never do the dishes again. We're still waiting for the Kennedy of 2011 (21-4, 2.88 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) to make an appearance. Hopefully he'll be able to start by Friday.
Patrick Corbin, SPHot5/25/2013 8:25:00 PM
Description: Ho hum, another win for Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin who is now 8-0 despite giving up three earned runs on Sunday.
Insight: The three runs pushed his ERA up to 1.71 and WHIP to 1.02, but he's still a great bargain.
Adam Eaton, RF5/23/2013 5:23:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton doesn't have any structural damage in his elbow, but he'll be shut down from throwing for 2-3 weeks, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Eaton suffered a sprained UCL late in March and began feeling more soreness recently. This is ultimately good news, however, as the lack of structural damage means he won't need Tommy John surgery.
Adam Eaton, RF5/22/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) has returned to Phoenix to see a doctor after experiencing soreness in his elbow, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Eaton suffered a sprained UCL late in March and has been nearing his return, but he might require Tommy John surgery.
Aaron Hill, 2B5/21/2013 7:13:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) will have his broken hand examined by a doctor Monday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Hill's left hand is healing slowly and he already has been out for five weeks. We won't see him again until June.
Adam Eaton, RF5/21/2013 3:25:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) played the outfield for the first time since heading out on his rehab assignment.
Insight: Eaton suffered a strained UCL late in March. It will be interesting to see how manager Kirk Gibson juggles his outfield upon Eaton's return with Geraldo Parra, Jason Kubel and Cody Ross.
Jason Kubel, LF5/20/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel is a career .360 hitter (9-for-25) with three homers against Colorado starter Jon Garland.
Insight: Kubel returned to the lineup Sunday after missing two games with a left quad injury. He went 0-for-3 with a sac fly and is now hitting .238. Fantasy owners are looking for another big season out of him after he blasted 30 home runs last season with 90 RBI.
Jason Kubel, LF5/19/2013 4:19:00 PM
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel returned to the lineup Sunday after missing two games with a left quad injury.
Insight: Kubel went 0-for-3 with a sac fly and is now hitting .238. He's taken just 63 at-bats this season due to the lingering quad injury.
Martin Prado, 3B5/19/2013 10:47:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado is a .350 hitter in 40 at-bats against Miami starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Prado played for the Braves for several years and faced Nolasco plenty of times. He's hitting .288 this month after batting .217 in April, but his OPS this month is just .683.
Gerardo Parra, LFHot5/18/2013 9:44:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra's leadoff homer Saturday against Miami was the only run of the game for either team.
Insight: Due to injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton, Parra has had the chance to play every day, and he has responded with a .327 average and 20 extra-base hits in 168 at-bats. He's hitting .365 with three round-trippers in May.
Brandon McCarthy, SPHot5/18/2013 9:41:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon McCarthy dominated Miami for his third career shutout Saturday night.
Insight: McCarthy gave up three hits and walked two to win his first game of the season. McCarthy was battered for 61 hits and 30 earned runs in his first 40 innings this year, but he has held opponents scoreless over 17 innings in his last two outings.
Jason Kubel, LF5/18/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel missed Friday's against the Marlins and is questionable for Saturday's game against Miami with a strained left quad.
Insight: Kubel (.250, 3 HR, 9 RBI) hasn't played since Wednesday and possibly more importantly hasn't homered since April 29. After hitting 30 homers last season and knocking in 90 runs, a lot is expected of Kubel and to date we haven't seem much to be excited about.
Trevor Cahill, SPHot5/17/2013 10:13:00 PM
Description: Arizona righthander Trevor Cahill surrendered just one run in eight innings Friday night in a victory over the Marlins.
Insight: Cahill is really on a roll right now. Over his last five starts, he's 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA. Walks have been an issue (24 in 58 innings) but other than that, Cahill hasn't given his owners much to complain about this season.
Eric Chavez, 3BHot5/17/2013 10:05:00 PM
Description: D'Backs third baseman Eric Chavez collected four hits Friday in a win over Miami.
Insight: That gives Chavez eight hits in his last three games. Chavez (.337, 5 HR, 18 RBI) is on pace for 69 RBI this season, which would be his highest total since 2006.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot5/17/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt had another monster game Friday night against the Marlins (4-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI).
Insight: It didn't take Goldschmidt long to become a fantasy superstar. The 25-year-old is hitting .338 this year with 12 HR, 35 RBI and four steals. He hasn't missed a game yet in 2013.
Jason Kubel, LF5/17/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: D'Backs left fielder Jason Kubel won't be in action Friday against the Marlins.
Insight: It's the second game in a row he's missed because of a quad injury. Kubel (.250, 3 HR, 9 RBI) hasn't homered since April.
Heath Bell, RP5/16/2013 9:21:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks closer Heath Bell has saved five of six chances since J.J. Putz went down with an injury.
Insight: Bell had a slip-up on May 12 against the Phillies when he allowed two runs on four hits to blow a lead, but otherwise he hasn't allowed a run in his other five save opportunities since May 7. The right-hander is starting to gain back the trust of fantasy owners after his disastrous season with the Marlins in 2012.
Ian Kennedy, SP5/15/2013 7:46:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy picked up his second win of the season despite lasting just five innings Wednesday against the Braves.
Insight: Kennedy gave up three runs on five hits and walked three, but Arizona scored five runs off opposing starter Tim Hudson. The right-hander has a 44/23 K/BB and a 4.88 ERA in 55 1/3 innings.
Eric Chavez, 3BHot5/15/2013 10:47:00 AM
Description: Arizona third baseman Eric Chavez is hitting .417 with a homer and eight RBI over his last 12 games.
Insight: Chavez went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI Wednesday against the Braves. He's hitting .310 this season and should be owned in all NL-only leagues.
Aaron Hill, 2B5/13/2013 9:01:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill still hasn't received clearance to resume baseball activities. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: His recovery from a broken hand hasn't gone as smoothly as hoped. Hill (.306, 2 HR, 6 RBI) isn't close to returning.
Adam Eaton, RF5/13/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) will be on rehab assignment for about one more week before returning to the big club.
Insight: Eaton suffered a strained UCL late in March. It will be interesting to see how manager Kirk Gibson juggles his outfield upon Eaton's return with Geraldo Parra and A.J. Pollock playing well in his absence along with Jason Kubel and Cody Ross.
Cody Ross, OF5/13/2013 9:51:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross is 4-for-6 with a double and a pair of home runs against Atlanta left-hander Mike Minor.
Insight: Ross missed the first two weeks of the season but is back in the outfield on a regular basis. He's not producing at the level he did in Boston last season (22 HR, 81 RBI, .807 OPS), but this matchup could help get him started.
Heath Bell, RP5/12/2013 9:42:00 PM
Description: D'Backs closer Heath Bell blew his second save of the season Sunday against Philadelphia.
Insight: He let in two runs in the ninth inning before Brad Ziegler came on to take his place. If Bell has another slip-up like this, Kirk Gibson could opt to use David Hernandez in the ninth inning.
Brandon McCarthy, SP5/12/2013 7:54:00 PM
Description: D'Backs righthander Brandon McCarthy didn't allow a run in eight innings Sunday against Philadelphia.
Insight: Unfortunately, Arizona's bullpen gave up four in the next two frames to lose 4-2 in extra innings. McCarthy (0-3, 5.63 ERA) hasn't won a game since last August. That's a span of nine starts without a win.
Miguel Montero, C5/12/2013 10:28:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is a career .667 hitter (6-for-9) versus Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick with a home run and a 1.811 OPS.
Insight: Montero is off to a slow start, batting .203, and has been dropped from the cleanup spot. Kendrick is a much improved pitcher this season, so history may not repeat itself in this matchup.
J.J. Putz, RP5/9/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: D'Backs closer J.J. Putz won't need surgery on his strained elbow.
Insight: For a second it looked like Putz might be headed for Tommy John surgery but Fox's Ken Rosenthal has assured us that's not the case. With that said, it's doubtful we'll see Putz again before the All-Star break.
Wade Miley, SP5/9/2013 9:53:00 AM
Description: Arizona's Wade Miley outpitched Clayton Kershaw Wednesday in a battle of All-Star lefthanders.
Insight: Miley has had major control issues this season (10 walks in his previous two outings) but he held it together on Wednesday, striking out four and walking none in 7 2/3 innings. He's 3-1 on the season with a 2.93 ERA in seven starts.
Heath Bell, RP5/8/2013 8:39:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson confirmed that Heath Bell will get the first shot at save chances with J.J. Putz on the shelf, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Bell said before that he was told David Hernandez would either pitch the eighth or ninth based on matchups, but Gibson didn't beat around the bush in saying that Bell will be the guy.
J.J. Putz, RPCold5/8/2013 6:38:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, J.J. Putz is likely headed for major elbow surgery.
Insight: Putz left Tuesday's game with elbow stiffness. Even if the team opts for rehab over surgery, Olney says that Putz is going to be out a long time. Heath Bell will get the first crack at save chances.
J.J. Putz, RPCold5/8/2013 5:54:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz (elbow stifness) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Putz left Tuesday's game with the injury. He has struggled this year, blowing four saves. Heath Bell will get the first crack at save chances.
Heath Bell, RP5/8/2013 5:11:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks reliever Heath Bell will be used as the closer while J.J. Putz (elbow) is out. SOURCE: John Gambadoro, 620 KTAR Phoenix
Insight: David Hernandez' recent struggles likely cost him the first shot at the closer role. Bell has a 4.73 ERA, but he also has a 19/3 K/BB in 13 1/3 innings this season. Still, it's going to take a leap of faith to add Bell after he had a 5.09 ERA and eight blown saves last year for the Marlins.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B5/8/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has had a couple of excellent matchups this week, but Wednesday isn't one of them. He's 1-for-14 with seven strikeouts in his matchups against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Goldschmidt has gotten off to a excellent start, batting .314 with seven homers, 27 RBI and 20 runs scored, but this isn't a matchup which is likely to improve on those statistics. Avoid.
Heath Bell, RP5/8/2013 9:50:00 AM
Description: Arizona relief pitcher Heath Bell was brought in to close on Tuesday after J.J. Putz left the game with elbow stiffness.
Insight: Arizona has plenty of options if Putz is sidelined: David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and Bell. Bell has the experience and successfully closed in Tuesday's three-out save opportunity which should mean he gets another shot at the next one.
J.J. Putz, RPCold5/8/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz left Tuesday night's game with elbow stiffness.
Insight: This could explain Putz's ineffectiveness (2-1, 4.26 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, four blown saves). Arizona has plenty of options if Putz is sidelined: David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and Heath Bell. Bell has the experience and successfully closed in Tuesday's save opportunity.
Martin Prado, 3BCold5/7/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado is an ugly 0-for-10 against Dodgers right-hander Josh Beckett
Insight: Prado is struggling this season, batting just .234 with a .641 OPS through the first 31 games. He should be on your bench for this matchup.
Martin Prado, 3BCold5/6/2013 12:35:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado is an ugly 1-for-15 (.067) against Dodgers left-hander Chris Capuano.
Insight: Prado is struggling this season, batting just .226 with a .626 OPS through the first 30 games. He should be on your bench for this matchup.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1BHot5/6/2013 12:31:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt "owns" Dodgers left-hander Chris Capuano with a .750 batting average and two home runs and a 2.269 OPS in 12 at-bats.
Insight: Goldschmidt has gotten off to a solid start, batting .295 with five homers, 21 RBI and 18 runs scored. This matchup should add to those totals. He's a must start.
Patrick Corbin, SPHot5/5/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in six starts this season (40 IP).
Insight: Corbin is second in baseball with a 71.1 percent first-pitch strike rate and 13th in overall strike percentage. He only threw a first-pitch strike 58.6 percent of the time last season.
Cody Ross, OFCold5/5/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross has never had a hit in 10 career at-bats against Padres starter Edinson Volquez.
Insight: Ross missed the first two weeks of the season with a strained calf and has yet to homer in 69 at-bats this season while batting .261. He isn't a strong play Sunday.
Didi Gregorius, SS5/4/2013 4:08:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius (concussion) has been activated from the seven-day disabled list.
Insight: Gregorious was hit in the helmet by a 93-mph fastball, but he cleared all concussion tests Tuesday. He played well in his first seven games, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS. He's certainly got more fantasy upside than Cliff Pennington (career .247 batting average, .665 OPS).
Tyler Skaggs, RP5/3/2013 4:39:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs owns a 6.15 ERA and a 24/12 K/BB in 26 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season.
Insight: Skaggs is rated as the No. 10 prospect in baseball by MLB.com. He was ineffective in six starts last year, posting a 5.83 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and a 21/13 K/BB in 29 1/3 innings. However, he owns a career 3.19 ERA and a 9.82 K/9 in 415 1/3 career minor league innings.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B5/1/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt "owns" Giants starter Tim Lincecum to the tune of a .571 batting average with five home runs and a 2.303 OPS in 14 at-bats.
Insight: Goldschmidt has gotten off to a solid start, batting .289 with five homers, 18 RBI and 18 runs scored. This matchup should add to those totals. He's a must start.
Didi Gregorius, SS4/30/2013 11:07:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius (concussion) has been cleared for baseball activities. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Gregorious was hit in the helmet by a 93-mph fastball just four days ago, but he cleared all concussion tests Tuesday. He is eligible to be activated Saturday, but manager Kirk Gibson said he wasn't sure when the team will activate the young shortstop.
Gerardo Parra, LF4/30/2013 11:24:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is getting to play everyday and proving to be a great asset to both Arizona and fantasy owners hitting .305 with 18 runs scored, but Tuesday is a poor matchup which should be avoided.
Insight: Parra is hitless in 10 career at-bats against Madison Bumgarner including five strikeouts.
Patrick Corbin, SP4/28/2013 8:12:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin didn't walk a batter Sunday against the Rockies, which allowed him to limit the damage to two runs despite giving up nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Insight: Corbin hasn't issued a free pass and has 12 strikeouts over 14 innings in his last two starts. He's 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP so far.
Didi Gregorius, SS4/28/2013 3:05:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius, who left Friday's game after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Josh Outman and missed Saturday's contest has been put on the seven-day concussion list.
Insight: He appears to have avoided serious injury, but these days any head injury is watched carefully. The 23-year-old is off to a quick start, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS since being called up seven games ago.
Jason Kubel, LF4/28/2013 12:59:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel has been activated from the disabled list. He's been on the DL with an injured quad.
Insight: He was expected to begin a rehab assignment on Monday, but apparently those plans were tossed out. Gerardo Parra should move back to a reserve role upon Kubel's return.
Didi Gregorius, SS4/28/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius, who left Friday's game after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Josh Outman and missded Saturday's contest, is doubtful for Sunday's game against Colorado.
Insight: He appears to have avoided serious injury, but might still be a candidate for the seven-day concussion disabled list. The 23-year-old is off to a quick start, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS since being called up seven games ago.
Jason Kubel, LF4/27/2013 7:16:00 PM
Description: Jack Magruder from Fox Sports Arizona is hearing that Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel could be back in the major leagues as soon as Wednesday. He's been on the DL with an injured quad.
Insight: He's expected to participate in rehab games for Triple-A Reno on Monday and Tuesday. Gerardo Parra will move back to a reserve role upon Kubel's return.
Miguel Montero, C4/27/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is a career .455 hitter (5-for-11) versus Colorado left-hander Jeff Francis with a home run and a 1.182 OPS.
Insight: Montero is off to a slow start, batting .197 with a homer and 10 RBI through his first 22 games. He was a decent fantasy option in 2012 (.286, 65 runs, 15 HR, 88 RBI, .829 OPS), though he seems to have hit a plateau, failing to greatly improve on the promise of 2011. This season isn't looking any better either.
Didi Gregorius, SS4/27/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius left Friday's game after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Josh Outman.
Insight: He appears to have avoided serious injury, but could certainly miss a few days. The 23-year-old is off to a quick start, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS since being called up seven games ago.
J.J. Putz, RPCold4/24/2013 7:29:00 PM
Description: According to Diamondbacks.com, manager Kirk Gibson will stick with J.J. Putz at closer despite his struggles.
Insight: Putz (1-0, 5.00 ERA) has already blown three saves this season including one Tuesday night in San Francisco. Even Putz, who is nearing 200 saves for his career, isn't immune to the occasional slump. It's too early for fantasy owners to lose faith in him.
J.J. Putz, RPCold4/24/2013 1:13:00 PM
Description: Arizona closer J.J. Putz blew his third save on Tuesday night.
Insight: Although that's more blown saves than Carlos Marmol or John Axford, he's not in danger of losing his job. Putz saved 77 games with a sub-3.00 ERA. Heath Bell or David Hernandez would be Arizona's other closing options if the slump continues.
Gerardo Parra, LF4/24/2013 10:37:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is getting to play everyday with the injuries to Jason Kubel and Adam Eaton, but Wednesday's matchup is a poor one for him as he's hitless in 10 at-bats versus Giants starter Madison Bumgarner with five strikeouts.
Insight: Parra was supposed to start the season as the fourth outfielder but the injuries to Eaton and Kubel have allowed Parra to start 19 of 20 games. He's batting .291 with 14 runs scored.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B4/22/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has twice as many strikeouts as hits in his 12 at-bats versus Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong with just a .167 batting average.
Insight: Goldschmidt has gotten off to a quick start, batting .329 with three homers, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored, but this matchup is unfavorable.
Adam Eaton, RF4/21/2013 4:50:00 PM
Description: D'Backs outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) has been hitting since April 4 and began throwing Friday, according to Diamondbacks.com.
Insight: Eaton suffered a strained UCL late in March. D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson said it will be about a month from Friday that Eaton will be ready to return, which puts him on track to come back around May 19. "He'll throw every other day for two weeks," Gibson said. "Then he'll go to two days in a row. Probably a day or two days off, then get into three in a row. ... We're not going to rush him."
Jason Kubel, LF4/21/2013 4:50:00 PM
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel is still in "calm-down" mode as he lets the swelling in his strand left quad subside. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: Kubel is eligible to return from the disabled list on April 28th, but it doesn't look like he'll be ready for that date. We should have a clearer timetable once the swelling clears.
Wade Miley, RP4/17/2013 9:44:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley had a 3-0 lead with two outs and one on in the sixth inning Wednesday against the Yankees, but he gave up a double and walked the next two batters before reliever Tony Sipp gave up a two-run single to tie the game.
Insight: Miley was dominant through the first six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, but he ran out of gas. He has a 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through three starts.
Brandon McCarthy, SPCold4/16/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy has a 7.47 ERA and 2.04 WHIP through three starts with his new team.
Insight: McCarthy has allowed 28 hits in just 15 2/3 innings, and he made it through just four innings Tuesday against New York. The right-hander has posted an ERA in the low threes in each of the last two seasons, so we're willing to give him more time.
Didi Gregorius, SS4/16/2013 4:18:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have called up shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius from the minors after placing Aaron Hill (broken hand) on the DL. Gregorius was acquired from Cincinnati in a three-team trade that sent Trevor Bauer to Cleveland and Shin Soo-Choo to the Reds this offseason.
Insight: He might have started the season with the big league club but he suffered a UCL sprain early in spring training. Gregorius hit .387 (12-for-31) with two homers and a steal in seven rehab games at Triple-A Reno and should start at shortstop, with Cliff Pennington moving to second.
Aaron Hill, 2B4/16/2013 4:14:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed second baseman Aaron Hill on the disabled list with a broken left hand. He's expected to miss 4-6 weeks, according to beat writer Nick Piecoro.
Insight: Hill was hit in the left hand last week, sat out a few days and had to leave early from Sunday's game. X-rays came back negative but an MRI revealed a small fracture on Tuesday. Didi Gregorius has been called up and will likely start at shortstop, with Cliff Pennington and Martin Prado playing second base and Eric Chavez getting time at third.
Aaron Hill, 2B4/16/2013 2:24:00 PM
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill, who left Sunday's game in the fourth inning with a wrist injury, is not in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Insight: Hill has put up solid numbers with a .278 batting average, a pair of homers, 11 runs scored and six RBI. Martin Prado will start at second base with Eric Chavez at third. Prado likely already has second base eligibility so this doesn't add anything to his value.
