Longhorns eliminate UC Irvine at CWS

Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Chad Hollingsworth pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning and C.J. Hinojosa clubbed the first homer of this year's College World Series to lift Texas to a 1-0 win over UC Irvine in an elimination contest Wednesday night.

The Longhorns will take on Vanderbilt Friday afternoon. It will be another elimination game for Texas.

Hollingsworth allowed four hits and struck out five without issuing a walk through 8 1/3 innings. Travis Duke retired the final two batters for the save.

Thanks to a base-running blunder, the Longhorns wasted a golden opportunity to score in the top of the sixth inning. Ben Johnson hit a ball down the left- field line that was mishandled by Adam Alcantara along the side wall. Johnson surged into third base with one out, but on appeal it was ruled Johnson never touched first base and he was called out by first base umpire Scott Erby. Replays showed Johnson's left foot went over the base.

If Johnson was on third, he would have scored as Mark Payton followed with a base hit, but Evan Manarino got out of the inning.

UC Irvine put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hinojosa's throwing error allowed Chris Rabago to reach safely. With two outs, Rabago moved to second on a wild pitch, but Hollingsworth struck out Jerry McClanahan.

Hinojosa led off the next inning and turned on a 2-0 pitch from Manarino with the ball sailing over the wall in left field.

Manarino, who fanned seven through 6 1/3 innings, was replaced by Evan Brock. The Anteaters again put a runner at second. Alcantara was pegged in the back with a pitch and sacrificed to second, but Taylor Sparks and Rabago both hit into outs.

Connor Spencer singled off Hollingsworth to begin the ninth. Hollingsworth then retired McClanahan on a fly ball to center. Duke fanned Jonathan Munoz and Grant Palmer popped out to right field to end the game.

The Longhorns got revenge for a 3-1 loss to the Anteaters in the first game of the CWS on June 14.

Thursday's action will see Ole Miss taking on TCU in an elimination game. The winner will play Virginia Friday night.
